Todd Bowles Had No Interest In Pulling Starters

December 24th, 2023

No rest, no way.

It was 30-6 after three quarters. It was a blowout. Time to pull some starters to prevent injuries and give backups a dozen or so quality snaps, right?

Wrong, said Bucs coach Todd Bowles after the game.

In fact, Bowles said he had no desire to pull any starters, even though Baker Mayfield, Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett and gamewrecker safety Antoine Winfield got dinged up after the game was all but sealed.

“No, we’ve got a lot of young guys that need a lot of experience,” Bowles said. “I think last year, we played Atlanta and pulled the starters in the last game – we lost our mojo going into the
playoffs.

“We’ve got things to work on and get better and we’re going to play.”

Bowles may not be far off there. Several offensive players after the game all told Joe they are all still learning the new offense designed by first-year coordinator Dave Canales.

On the surface, this seems very strange to Joe. The Bucs just played their 15th game of the season. But every offensive players Joe spoke with swore they don’t have the offense fully down — but they are close.

This is something future Hall of Fame receiver Mike Evans told Joe last week. So perhaps that is one reason why Bowles didn’t play Kyle Trask and other offensive backups.

Hey, the offense is clicking, finally. Joe doesn’t blame Bowles for not wanting to upset the apple cart. It took this long to recover from how the Bucs lost momentum at the Week 5. The Bucs offense hadn’t looked remotely this good for most of this season.

Don’t fix what is not broken.

coach is a risky biscuit these days…

    gotta love it

  2. Tbbucs3 Says:

No way after the Jags came back against the Chargers last year cant have Trask blow the lead!

Bowles put on a coaching clinic today and had them ready to play….meanwhile the jags looked like they didnt even want to be there.

  3. Tony marks Says:

problem with that theory is the last plays were mostly runs so what

Kyle can’t hand off balls either?

  4. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

If he told Cornales to turtle up the offense then he shoulda pulled the starters if he was going to force feed the run game. No need to keep them if they weren’t going to try to score any more points. No need for for the stars to get injured

  5. Beeej Says:

    He knows, doctor, he KNOWS!

  6. David Says:

That is why Bucs 64 % of Bucs fans have no confidence in Toilet Bowl as your own pull reflects. Bucs finally defeated a team with a wining record that lost their past three games with a trash qb, Trevor L. Bucs are finally one game over .500 and Toliet Bowl knows that they have not defeated any legit playoff bound team yet this season.

Baker threw multiple TD’s in a consecutive games for the first time season. I am fine with Trash Baker to defeat an over rated trash Trevor L. I also hope he defeats another trash over rated, Derek C. next week.

    Joe,
Why don’t you run a poll to see what portion of Bucs fans are interested to have the combo of TB & BM back in 2024 as the HC and the qb starter ? I promise it would be less than 35%.

  7. Capt.Tim Says:

    Yeah, agree 100%.
Although I did see a few young guys on defense come in the game.

Trask comes in, throws up a couple floaters,
    Suddenly a 30-12 game becomes a 30-26 game.
Nothing demoralizes a defense more, tha the offense giving up cheap scores at the end of a game.
Trask stayed where he has to stay.
    On the bench.
Cant afford for him to play, especially this close to the playoffs.

  8. Beeej Says:

I’m fairly sure Trask doesn’t throw floaters anymore

  9. Craig Says:

You fix things when they start to go bad, not after they fail completely.

A slightly dinged player has a bigger chance of becoming majorly dinged than a fresh guy.

Baker might be desperate to run the last games of this season, but what did he do after the two minute warning?

A neck strain could be a serious injury, Someone on this team needs to be grown up about such things. One bend in the wrong direction could blow two weeks of playing time.

Trask could not have blown that lead, and I don’t think he would anyway. I think he either plays some here or comes back to haunt us, like too many other Bucs QBs have done.

  10. David Says:

    Joe,
Baker is on the roll defeating two teams. If you have posted so many articles reflecting Baker performance as an efficient qb. Please do the Bucs fans a favor and provide us with a poll to find out if the Bucs fans are interested to resign Baker as their 2024 starter now and one additional after the end of the season ? Majority of Bucs fans do not want a journey inconsistent mediocre qb even if they limp into the playoffs.

  11. ‘79 Defense Says:

Wish he would have thought this way before that second half in Atlanta last year, but oh well…

  12. David Says:

Even TB has no values for Baker to pull him out during a blow out game to evade a possible injury to his starting qb. Baker was still scrambling for additional unnecessary yardage at the end of the game with Bucs up with multiple scores when he almost lost his head.

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

    David.
You are on the wrong site. You are lookig for the
“ I am in love with Kyle Trask, and want to be his lover” site.

This is a football site, about the NFC South leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
    Not a bromance site.

If you are still trying to bad mouth Mayfield at this point, it has nothing to do with football.

  14. Buddha Says:

Baker, Comeback player of the year!
If Buccaneers win two more and the home game against Dallas Bowls will be NFL Coach of the year.
Only in Tampa would a coach with four straight wins be so disrespected.

  15. Let ‘em bake Says:

Baker $ incentives are tied to playing time. Snaps. Remember when Brady made sure gronk got a late reception to get xtra cash? These guys are tuned into that. A possible consideration to think about. David: thx for promoting baker from trash to mediocre. You’re learning.

  16. Tbbucs3 Says:

At this point, if your still bashing Mayfield in favor of Trask its time to find a new sport to follow. May I suggest women’s lacrosse?

Yall shouldve given this topic up 10 weeks ago…this is Mayfields team and everyone with half a brain knows it!

  17. RGA Says:

    Tbbuc3 you’re a loser, what a rediculous post.

  18. Tbbucs3 Says:

    RGA

Whats *ridiculous* is how you were one of the main voices calling for Trask to start the entire month of August and still cant accept that Baker is obviously the right choice for this team.

Archives are available, I recommend everyone go back and look at how wrong RGA, Bonzai, Rod Mush, and all the other Mayfield haters were dead wrong. Clowns!

  19. Tbbucs3 Says:

Although, I do respect Bonzai for coming around on Mayfield….its the ones who still refuse to accept that Mayfield is a really good quarterback and playing at a very high level that look like complete fools.

  20. BakerBucs Says:

David says how is it that u know more than everyone else on this site & in this league I wud hate to live with a fool like u I feel for u r wife if there is someone that stupid to live with you the stadium was at full capacity today so u r 35*% is as dumb as everything u post

  21. BakerBucs Says:

David says we were hoping it was u in there scrambling almost losing u r head plz try out for this team cause I wud pay big to watch u get railed

  22. BakerBucs Says:

David says yes the bucks r limping u idiot.i was wondering does somebody pay u incentives to post so much stupid stuff what’s u r payoff # we all want to know

  23. Jonny Says:

Obviously Joe and the clowns here will somehow make this about Trask’s ineptitude instead of celebrating a win where the coach did not feel like benching his starters to guarantee that they didn’t leave any time on the clock.

  24. BakerBucs Says:

David says it’s Xmas weekend did Santa give u another sack of coal again so sad to bad

  25. toad bowels Says:

The Bucs should have played rookie CB’s Heywood Jablome and Holden Mycock to see if they could play hard in a blowout.

  26. Tony marks Says:

sheeeesh David – get a life

  27. Jeremy Says:

BUCS are winning convincingly. Do you people still want to bad mouth our coach? I’m glad coach tb agrees with not resting starters. Go BUCS!!!!!

  28. Daniel Dream Says:

According to David, every QB is trash, lol. If that’s the case at least we got Popeye the sailor man up in our trash can…

The issue at the end of this game IMO is we still can’t really run the ball too well in the trenches, so we had to stick with the normal offensive game plan to see the game out. I’m glad to see that game plan is now involving a lot more attacking the edges and just plain airing it out. IMO our ticket🎟to success🏉🏆🌎 comprises a lot of that. I had a feeling we’d start to see this offense unshackled as the season went on… now that they are comfortable in this system and getting chemistry together we can see the potential of this offense. Now let’s pound on the ain’ts until they put in the back up QB and intercept him a couple times and win this division with another blow out win in style 😎

  29. Daniel Dream Says:

    Merry Christmas
    ❄️🕯🎄🕯❄️
    to all!

  30. David Says:

Here are the most devoted Baker’s trash fans: Baker Bucs, Tony Marks, Capt.Tim, Tbbucs3. They have been following him for the past six years from city to city. They are professional trolls and dirtiest Baker’s fans.

  31. Daniel Dream Says:

Too bad David can’t get in the Christmas🎄spirit! The Buccaneers are doing great, are in 1st place and now everyone can celebrate the holiday with an extra big smile on our faces. Cheers! 🍻🥂🎁

  32. Not david Says:

  33. Not Says:

15 weeks and DC’s offense is so complicated and sophisticated that our players don’t know it yet, and as a result we have a record of 8-7 .
I guess time will tell but Pete Carroll never offered this guy the job. How does a first year have a more complicated offense than the gurus in the league ?
    Not buying that nonsense.
But I’m along for this ride, Baker certainly has grit. Hopefully more 50/50 balls to ME and CG.
Do others also think TB may have removed his Bu-t pl-g? Seems he has loosened up and is allowing DC to take some chances.

  34. Tbbucs3 Says:

False David, the 3 in my user name was a homage to Winston from his rookie year….unlike you I actually support Bucs STARTING quarterbacks….not 3 year clipboard holders.

And nothing against Trask, he seems like a good kid…..Trask trolls on the other hand are just insufferable basement dwellers

  35. Not Says:

    David,
Who is going to be the QB we sign next year other than BM?
Like it or not, we are hitched to this dude for the coming years. Let’s hope his maturity level and experiences at the NFL level is what makes him play better than when he first came out.
Rich Gannon did it late, as have others .
Just let’s get rid of TB plz !!!

  36. unbelievable Says:

Baker must have p!ssed in David’s cereal this morning or something.

  37. Burt Says:

Only an idiot coach doesn’t give his backup a chance to get his feet wet while leading 30-0. We played great and whooped the jags. Great, now get your starting QB and a few of your stars some rest and give the your backup a chance to get some reps. Mayfield will likely be a bit sore after that sack in the 4th.

  38. Pick6 Says:

David’s right. Why stick with Baker when we can just walk into the Franchise QB Store and order ourselves a Patrick Mahomes? That’s how it works, right?

I definitely have my concerns about Baker’s size, downfield accuracy, and future durability but he has proven he can do what Canales needs across from an improving defense. The Bucs have a history of failing to find good QBs and would be smart to hold onto Baker until they know they have something better. The best free agent is Kirk Cousins and his rehabbing Achilles, so it’s into the crapshoot of the draft for his eventual replacement

  39. garro Says:

Yeah but damn I hate to have guys hurt like this!

    Go Bucs!

  40. realistic-optimistic Says:

Bowles said. “I think last year, we played Atlanta and pulled the starters in the last game – we lost our mojo going into the
    playoffs.

In general, I have no problem with Bowles keeping the starters in yesterday. No issue at all. But, the quote about last year is ridiculous. We didn’t get our asses handed to us by DAL because we rested players against ATL. That’s silly.

  41. orlbucfan Says:

I trust Todd Bowles more than I do a bunch of yahoos on here for clicks. Thank you for the Christmas win, Coach Bowles. I gotta include Canales even tho he drove me nuts most of the season. You think sold-out RJS was rocking’ yesterday? Just wait until New Years Eve Sunday when the Aints come marching (limping) in. Go Mighty Bucs!!

  42. Rick Brooks Says:

Something special is happening with this team. Isn’t it time to appreciate it and support the team, stop with the ridiculous Trask and Mayfield bitching, and enjoy the journey our Bucs are on? The rookies and young players are growing and regardless of what happens the rest of the season, the momentum will carry over to next season, with some additions to make the team even stronger.

If you’re a true fan of the Bucs, for God’s sake, get behind the and stop trying to win ridiculous arguments!
