Todd Bowles: Bucs “Needed To Go A Different Way”

December 26th, 2023

Baker Mayfield blending in.

Were the Bucs too buttoned up last year? Too stoic? Too detached from their international celebrity star quarterback?

Joe isn’t sure what Bucs coach Todd Bowles exactly meant yesterday when speaking during his day-after presser. But one thing was clear, per Bowles, he didn’t seem to like the vibe around his team last season.

Bowles was asked about Baker Mayfield’s impact with the Bucs, in the locker room and how he blended in with his teammates. Bowles indicated there needed to be a shakeup of some sort last offseason.

“I think [Mayfield is] relatable because he’s different and I think we have a different team,” Bowles said. “I think we needed to go a different way.

“It’s worked out for us. The attitude that he brought in, I think would be infectious on a young or an older team. I think that’s just who he is. That part is not that big of a deal, but the leadership he’s shown and the way we’ve tried to change the team around has been outstanding.

“He leads the veterans, as well – he sits with the offense and the defense. He really brought camaraderie and chemistry together in the offseason, as well as summer training camp, to have these guys on the same page so that when we hit hard times, we wouldn’t panic.”

What was Bowles getting at? Was Tom Brady too distant?

Outside of maybe Mike Evans and Blaine Gabbert, Joe isn’t sure if Brady was close to any of his teammates. Oh, he liked a lot of them, but Brady was Brady. There was Brady the quarterback and (sometimes) outside One Buc Palace there was Brady the business mogul with his supermodel wife (now ex), his high society TMZ luxury lifestyle and his heavy-hitter acquaintances.

For example, you would never see or hear of Brady going to Rays games sitting amongst the littles with his offensive linemen pounding beers. You would never see or hear of Brady rolling up to dive bars with his receivers.

Joe isn’t sure if that is what Bowles is getting at. From Joe’s perspective, it sure appeared the Bucs offense tuned Brady out as early as the 2022 San Francisco debacle.

Are the Bucs better off with Mayfield over Brady? Let’s not get ridiculous, though the offensive production says it is. But yes, Mayfield is getting the job done.

Is that because Mayfield hangs with teammates away from One Buc Palace and they can relate to him? Hey, whatever works.

Brady didn’t want to be here. Even if he didn’t say it, people felt it. Baker doesn’t want to be anywhere else.

  2. Drunkinybor Says:

We are all human. If somebody doesn’t seem to like to be around you. Or if they have holier than thou vibe. It’s instinctive to find things about them you don’t like. We are social animals. We group together if ,only 3 dudes hang with the head honcho out of 53 plus the practice squad I wouldn’t like him either. What only he gets to go to your special yacht. Why you don’t believe it in me? Am I not good enough for you?… You turn to your buddies and say F that dude he’s one uppity Mo Fon. We supposed to be in this together family on 3. No man that B.S…..thats what Zi would feel anyway. Can’t help it even if he is the greatest.

  3. Mike C Says:

Ohhh boy Joe, if it isn’t the Trask mob you are messing with the Brady fan Bois….. lol love it!

  4. Mike C Says:

    Well said western buc.

  5. teacherman777 Says:

Tom was going through a divorce with two young children.

Tom went through extreme trauma last year while trying to play football.

As Arians said verbatim, “It wasn’t Tom Brady out there.”

    It’s true.

But don’t blame Tom. Have compassion for him.

Divorce with kids is like death. It’s very painful.

  6. ‘79 Defense Says:

Funny how everything was all peachy with Brady playing in Tampa the first year– national media reports he loves it in Tampa! Super Bowl win! Boat parade!

Second year: Still great, but not as great. What a comeback against the Rams! If only that blitz wasn’t called— and Godwin and Wirfs weren’t hurt we could have won two in a row!

Third year– It just seemed doomed from the start. Arians departs (for whatever reason), Jensen out for the year from day one, brutal schedule, dealing with the divorce, other injuries on the team…

Things just didn’t work out last year– and of course you can say Brady was to blame in some form, but I don’t fault him for anything. He won the damn SB for us. His biggest “mistake” may have been that he won it in his first year with the Bucs and not the last.

With all that said, glad that Baker has fit in so well so far.

  7. Since76 Says:

Wow. Everything is better now. Brady the cancer is gone. Mayfield won over the team before training camp rainbows with pots of gold. I’m still hopefull the first two consecutive games he played well in aren’t a fluke. I guess I’m more cautious than most I want to see more than two games to drink the koolaide. Before these two games he was a liability. I am hoping it’s the new normal.

  8. August 1976 Buc Says:

The team played last year like they were slogging in the mud for various reasons. When Brady disappeared August 2022, one who has been maniacal about preparation and that includes Offseason, Training camp and Preseason. It became a nasty elephant in the room when Brady made his sudden disappearance.
Is Baker better than “2022 Brady” YES!!, the 7 ring GOAT was an old statue in 2022
Baker for all intents and purposes, has had his moments during his short career. But really there is many more chapters to be written before the Book of Baker is finished. He definitely has started a new chapter and it looks promising for him. We will just see how it plays out during his time as a Buc. You still draft a QB next year, let him learn from Baker and compete with Trask. BTW Trask just looks like yesterdays news at 1 Buc Palace. Maybe one day Trask will play here or somewhere and be something, who knows. But Trask does not bring the Hutzpah that Baker brings, just Bakers overall attitude and the Blue collar way about him. Fun to see a QB do like this, it was always other teams that you would see this kind of story, nice that it is the Bucs this time.

  9. Bucs13 Says:

Brady has played 23 years and not one teammate has said any negative anything about him. matter of fact, they comment on how
Humble he is. He knew everyone in the building. He knew practice squad players. Just saw an interview with former practice squad guy Troy Warner who said he was surprised that Tom knew him.

Kyle Rudolph recently disclosed that Tom kept a box by his locker and told teammates to put things in and he would sign in. Brady never made a big deal about it and the only reason we knew about it was because of Rudolph.

Jesus , Brady is 45! He’s like half the age of his teammates, and by all accounts he wanted to be just one of the guys. He has totally different responsibilities than some of the younger guys. He has three kids. One of which lives in a different state. And a wife who wanted him to spend more time with the family. It’s totally disingenuous and unfair to say Brady was “distant.”

  10. Bucs13 Says:

Oh, forgot to add that Brady gave Godwin his game worn jersey when he broke Manning’s record for most NFL comebacks in history last year. A very valuable item. Yeah, that sure seems like a bad teammate. This revisionist history of Brady since he left is crazy. A bunch of entitled people. Lavonte said Brady calls
Him when Brady first signed. He sent Godwin a message congratulating him on his new born baby when he signed with us.

Folks, Google is free. Don’t be a sheep

  11. garro Says:

    I love that picture Joe!

At first glance it seems like Mauch is staring down the DL of the opposing team while getting the play!

    Go Bucs!

  12. Bucs13 Says:

From May 2020 from Lavonte David

To have him on the team, man, it’s incredible,” David said. “I had a lot of people who reached out to me who played with him and said I’m going to love him as a teammate. ‘He’s a great guy. Don’t get caught up in all the hype and stuff about him being a superstar and all that. He’s just a humble guy. He’s just one of the guys in the locker room.’ So far, that’s what it’s been like. To finally have a guy with that championship pedigree on our football team, it’s going to be a blessing to be a part of. Hopefully, I can learn a lot from him and hopefully, he can take us to the promised land, which is in Tampa this year. So that would be a great thing as well.”

  13. garro Says:

    More Bowles BS

“needed to be a shakeup” Really?

The shakeup was Goober Leftnut. And an O line that wasn’t patched together last second.

    Go Bucs!

  14. August 1976 Buc Says:

When Brady disappeared August 2022, one who has been maniacal about preparation and that includes Offseason, Training camp and Preseason. It became a nasty elephant in the room when Brady made his sudden disappearance.

This still happened and it did not help out at all. Brady will be the first one to tell you that prep is critical. Not a great way to start. There is other reasons like 4 of the 5 lineman were different from 2021, hence all the more you need prep with them, but hard to do, if you are not there.

We can go on and on about the accolades of the 7 ring GOAT. That goes with out saying. But to deny that it looked like Brady wanted to be in Miami, the reports in the offseason about him and Miami were confirmed, then his 2 week disappearance in August 2022. There is no way to sugar coat that. Those things do not help. Again, there is endless accolades for Brady, a good guy and GOAT at the QB position, but do not try and deny the affects of his offseason and preseason behavior in 2022. He is human and so are the players.

  15. SufferingSince76 Says:

    Brady the cancer? Moronic statement.

  16. SufferingSince76 Says:

Perhaps that was sarcasm. If so, my bad.

  17. Bucs13 Says:

@August Stop projecting. Has it every crossed your mind that his teammates supported him because he was going through a very public divorce? Some teammates spoke publicly about their empathy and support for him. Shaq lost a child and isn’t playing well this season. I don’t see you having the same energy for him.

I will say it once again. Godwin, Julio, Evans, and Otton were all out with injuries when Brady missed like seven days of training camp. He would’ve been working with practice squad players. You really think Brady wasn’t still maniacal in his approach to game preparation. You think he was somehow watching less film? Give me a break.

  18. WillieG Says:

Brady came here as more than just a QB. He was the G.O.A.T. He was also a teacher, a mentor, and a leader. It’s not at all uncommon that people tune out their mentors as they grow. I did so when I was a paramedic. I’d move on from a mentor after a few months. I know many of my trainees, or other new medics, tuned me out after awhile too. I’d bet that most people tune out their mentors eventually, now matter how great their mentor was.

Mayfield didn’t come here as a teacher, mentor, or leader. He came as just a QB. He earned the leader title after he arrived. He might teach some, but chances are, other players are teaching him too. After all, many of his teammates have rings he has yet to earn.

  19. mg Says:

TB-12 did all that b.s when he was young. Tampa had a problem with the wooden Indian head coach, that rams defensive debacle cost the Tampa fans another Super Bowl. Go Bucs.

  20. UKBuccaneer Says:

Brady was always going to fall off a cliff at some point – Father Time is undefeated. It doesn’t mean he wasn’t trying, it doesn’t mean he didn’t want to be in Tampa. It’s just one of those things.

Baker in 2023 is performing better than Brady in 2022 and that’s not a slur against Brady. It’s just great for the team.

  21. Boss Says:

Meh…..seems Todd had issues with the GOAT.

Maybe Bowles did not like not being top dog. Maybe Brady did not care for the lefty play calling……it sure seemed lefty’s play calling was the culprit…..actually the offense this year still has a lot of the same tendencies. Perhaps he should focus on what they changed the last few weeks because the play calling is what has changed the most the last few weeks.

You’ll never get Bowles to say that though…..easier to throw shade at someone else.

  22. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Let’s just get one thing 100% clear right now Joe………..Brady was on a totally different level thank Mayfield. Brady had nothing Left to prove and to top it all off, been through a dramtic family event (divorce). I don’t care who you are, a divorce is tramautic on anyone—superstar or not.

With all that being said ^^^^^. Mayfield is playing for the rest of his career / life this season with the Bucs……..Brady was just trying to squeeze out every moment of lasting Glory.

It’s very hard for anyone playing sports from their Youth to just “stop” because that’s their identity, that’s who they are, and that’s what makes them who they’ve been pretty much their whole lives……..you take that away and that’s terrifying for anyone.

We are seeing from the Bucs something we did not see last year and many years prior to be honest with you…….and that’s chemistry now…..you can see it on both —– Offense and Defense.

The fact that we are getting no-namers players, 3rd stringers like TEs contributing and making plays on the field speaks VOLUMES about the chemistry.

This team now believes in themselves; last year, they didn’t…..not even Brady Believed in this team last year.

  23. August 1976 Buc Says:

Bucs13, Projecting???? you cannot dismiss what happened, it is what it is. All I did was state what was public record. All the offseason stuff like the stuff like Brady in Miami. Then come training camp, and suddenly Tom is gone more than a week, for whatever he had to do for about 10 days. You can term it anything you want. The Bottom line is those things did not help the team. The team played like it was slogging through the mud the whole year. At least be real, and do not try and say those things do not affect a team. They had 4 different O lineman from 2021, the last thing you need is the starting QB gone, you need the reps. Is Tom the GOAT, YES. Did Brady’s offseason behavior and missed time in the preseason help the team? No it did not. That is not projecting, that is an actual fact when it comes to real life and trying to accomplish things as a team.

The whole thing with Brady down in Miami 2022 offseason and talking with the Dolphins, I thought was a media narrative. Then it was confirmed, those kind of things never endear you to the team you are playing for or its fans. Terrible look for Brady at the time. It was very much like Brady did not want to be in Tampa in 2022.
But I will say Thankyou Tom for everything you did as a Buc.

At the same time, it is good to have a player like Baker all in. No he is not the GOAT, but is better than the 2022 version of Brady

  26. Brandon Says:

Brady’s “greatness” took on a life of its own. How do you convince the GOAT to buy in as a head coach, how do you convince him to run the plays that were called or even run them the way they are supposed to be run. I’m 1000% convinced that the biggest issue with the offense last season was that Brady ran the show and neither Leftwich nor Bowles dared defy him. You can’t bench the GOAT yet it was the GOAT that was the de facto assistant offensive coordinator, he was also the only person that COULD constantly audible to smokescreens (ironically, I wish Mayfield would do it far more), Brady was also the one refusing to push the ball down the field during the first three quarters and prematurely checking down as well. Mayfield has been a revelation under center this season with a struggling running game and a green as grass offensive coordinator, who until a few weeks ago I knew to be in completely over his head.

Wanna see something funny? Compare Mayfield’s stats from his first six seasons to Drew Brees’ first seven. They are extremely similar but still favor Mayfield… I’m not saying he’ll be better than Brees but he is following a similar path.

  27. AMI_Chris Says:

Brady was a perfect fit for the Bucs. Super Bowl win in Year 1 proves it. Mayfield (let’s face it) was the best available free agent and he had to compete with Trask to even win the job. We are one game over .500 and haven’t beat a decent team yet, so let’s not hold a parade today. But he is playing well and SF, PHI and DAL all look vulnerable. DET could easily collapse. Once the tourney starts, I think the NFC side is wide open. BAL will be a tough out.

  28. Cobraboy Says:

Brady is the GOAT, but not the only great QB to stay a season too long.

I like Mayfield’s “grit” but fear for his physical safety when showing the “grit.”

  29. EEK Says:

The scheme and play calling was demoralizing
Brady was unable to pick up any 3rd downs with his feet and just couldn’t carry the offense like in the past
Just a sad and wasted season
Brady still stole a few victories for the team last year in the 4th quarter

Hard not to root for Baker

  30. orlbucfan Says:

Brady is a wrinkle who has led a charmed NFL life. Look at all the accolades he’s got. Talk about good luck; he’s a primo example of it. He came here cos the 49ers said nope. Here’s Tampa Bay with an excellent GM he was familiar with from his Pat days. Here’s this central FL team just about SB ready ‘cept for the dud at QB. Bucs had BA, and were willing to go into salary cap hell to get him here. They did, and won the SB. Brady should have retired before last season. Bowles was sandwiched between him, BA and Leftwich. He had no real HC power. This season is radically different. Bowles now IS the HC. And BM is a lot different than Brady. He’s got plenty to prove. He’s been humbled. He bonds with his fellow teammates cos he knows football is a TEAM sport. He’s feisty, smart and young, not a wrinkle. As a Bucs fan who likes Trask, I have to admit I am gaining admiration for Mayfield.

  31. Chris O Says:

Brady was good to his teammates, he taught them to care for their bodies in a way nobody else has, he was 20 years older than half of them, I think he did a pretty good job despite that. It’s time to let the Brady comparisons go.

  32. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Exactly orlbucfan. He cherry picked the Bucs because they were Super Bowl ready and the Patriots were sliding.

  33. T. McGee Says:

Mayfield has a heck of an agent and is obviously covering every angle to get Baker more money. He had a few good weeks and now he’s the working man hero, running a powerhouse offense that snobby rockstars like Tom Brady could only dream of.

    Give me a frickin’ break.

Baker is a millionaire athlete ALSO. Give Baker 7 rings and he would be in high society too. This article is madness.

  34. Craig Says:

Brady came here to prove HE was the one that had made the Patriots great, not Bill Belichik.

He did not come here to make friends, just to prove that point.

Maybe Mayfield did create a new direction, rather than being stuck in a hangover. I still do not know if he is the long term QB for Tampa.

I also don’t think it is a reason to run Kyle Trask over with the team bus.

  35. Kalind Says:

We’re discounting the effect of Byron Sandwich last year…..Brady with a competent OC and he might still be here.

  36. Buccos Says:

When Brady went to Robert Krafts birthday party and didn’t fly with the team to the game that is when he had officially lost it. Whatever it is

  37. Buddha Says:

Once you form a strong belief it is becomes validating. The hatred for Bowles has been at an irrational level. He deserves much more credit for the turn around than he has received.

  38. BFFL Says:

I credit the change from DS to TW as more of the reason.

  39. Beeej Says:

Lol just finished watching Chris Simms explain how Jax was gonna beat the Bucs

  40. Atlbuc28 Says:

Joe, In a very non-scientific survey. In my section since before the Superbowl run, there were a few Brady fans, mostly wearing Patriot’s jerseys. All very non vocal and kind of boring. Now, its full of Baker jerseys that are loud screaming fun as h… fans that can relate to our team now. We are gritty, sun soaked, hard working, beer drinking fools ! Baker is us and plays like the guys we had on our 96-2002 teams! We Love it! IMHO

  41. CleanHouse Says:

Article is garbage, Bowles should be fired, Brady is the best player the team has ever had.

  42. Steve 48 Says:

I meet baker at golf course that several team members play at (Rocky point)
He did a photo shoot and what impressed me about Baker he wasn’t better than you attitude, he was very like a down to to earth person he came over and shuck my hand and said nice things I knew right then he was going to be the quarterback that the Bucks need. I have ask several times from players to ask Brady to play here and they would just laugh for they knew he felt he was better than them that to me means a lot when it comes to leadership and also think about what he had come in and play with otherwise would he as successful as Baker is doing a great job with what was handed him go baker

  43. SteelStudBuc Says:

Brady looked like he lost tons of weight before last season… his face was gaunt… I’m suspecting something else was going on… thirsty nose… 2 week power rehab… we may never know.

  44. Boss Says:

That I can agree with Steelbuc..

he looked too thin. a lot of guys hitting middle age go into that mode.

women too, cept they sweat off their boobs 🙁

I’ll take a few extra pounds of a$$ and boobs please.

  45. Mike C Says:

  46. Kevin Says:

One man made the difference with a 7 -9 the previous year before he arrived. It’s amazing now anybody can talk negative about Tom Brady. He never brags on himself he’s always talking about his teammates and yet he’s the greatest quarterback ever played a game. If he doesn’t come to the buccaneers they don’t have that second super bowl that is a fact Todd bowles is a bus he’s always been even from the New York jet days he’s never been a coach. Bruce Arians was pretty much the same when he was in the Cardinals organization I don’t know where he get the reputation of being some offensive genius. Be appreciative Tampa Bay fans! You had a super bowl run because of Tom Brady and here is a guy who played 23 years and 45 years old at the time and the last season that was considered bad he had more yards and pretty much everybody in the league. What needed to be changed is there head coach.. and I promise you this you will see Baker Mayfield, b Baker Mayfield when all is said and done.. you have no playoff wins with him ever… Lol

  47. Mike C Says:

    Bingo Buccos!

  48. Buc N Muss Says:

They are better this year without Brady. He was a shell of himself last year and distracted. TB12 should have stayed retired.

  49. CleanHouse Says:

You shouldn’t say things like that Mike C.

    Learn some manners.

Hopefully you will be blocked from the site for hoping for my terrible death.

I hope Joe will take action and remove you.

  50. Since76 Says:

Last year we had the worst play caller in franchise history. To me anyways. Leftwich was awful, I still can’t understand the run up the left guard -tackle over and over thing. So Brady played at a disadvantage in my eyes. But Canales does it too so Bowles hands are in it.

  51. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs won a SB with Brady.

When Mayfield wins a SB, or 7, then talk to me about their conflicting styles and which one works better, then I’ll perhaps listen.

  52. sasquatch Says:

  54. BakerBucs Says:

Have u been paying attention to Brady pod cast with gronk the true Brady is evident listening to his nonsense hence have we forgotten the guy was suspended for (CHEATING) if u cheat u deserve no accolades from me or anyone just like lance Armstrong was stripped of his medals fined on top of that humiliated to no end yet u praise this guy listen to his pod cast he is nothing but braggadosis I even read 1 of these post where Brady wud leave a box to put things in to sign now that sounds like a friggin snob nonsense to me I guarantee Brady didn’t take the offensive line on vacation before training season to get to know all around him but I know baker did that!

  55. BakerBucs Says:

If Brady gave a crap why did he steal 35 million from this team to not play that’s rite paid 35 million to not play goodridence.he is just a distant memory not all of them were good that is for sure.if u get suspended for 6 games for cheating u ain’t all that.& who knows how else he cud have cheated ask belicheck

  56. Dom Says:

Fanbase continuing to show they didn’t deserve Brady. It’s really unbelievable. This team had a lost decade plus and all the guy does is fill in as the missing piece of a great team, and wins us a Superbowl year one. Over here gossiping like school girls because he didn’t go to a baseball game or chug beers with teammates

  57. Vancouver Buc Says:

CleanHouse speaks the truth. So it was Brady calling the Defensive scheme against the Rams in that playoff crapshow?

  58. Mike C Says:

Or ban the guy who calls your articles garbage, saying that the coach who is about to get the Bucs a division title should be fired is juvenile, and it was merely a suggestion.

  59. Mike C Says:

Chibuc, did I hurt your feelings?

  60. Mike C Says:

Clean house is a TROLL to the highest degree, go read all his garbage then give me the lecture.

  61. unbelievable Says:

We all know what Brady went though during the off-season / preseason. I think he just wasn’t himself, and that would have been the case no matter where he was playing. Obviously it hurt the team.

As for not going to bars and local games- that’s never really been his thing, even before the super model wife. The guy is a health but. You’re never going to see him pounding beers and wings lol.

As for Baker- I think he was the best choice this team could have made considering the options. My biggest issue with Baker is something he can’t change – his height. (So many batted balls). But outside of that, he’s played well for most of this season, and has been great the last 2 weeks.

  62. TF Says:

Well Good for Bowles to actually feel like he is the head coach and not Brady. But let’s keep perspective, it’s still 100% Bowles fault and his coaching staff (Leftwich) for last years debacle. Bowles made plenty of questionable decision. And furthermore, Canales deserves all of the credit for this years offense. It’s not surprising though because Baker is a Geno Smith clone so Canales is used to coaching someone like Baker and his skill set. 4 weeks ago we were one of the bottom 5 or 6 teams in the league. Caught fire and now we are cemented into the 19 pick after a first round exit because of our weak division. And to make matters worse, this seasons “success” , will be enough to keep Bowles and banish us into an age of mediocrity. I see a ton of 7 and 8 wins seasons in our future.

  63. Boomer10 Says:

Gotta agree with those that mention Brady’s disappearance during 2022 Training camp and/or preseason. I thought it was obvious he did not want to be here.
Didn’t seem like he was ‘that’ into it (for whatever reason).

Seems like Baker wants to be here. And he’s a good QB – maybe not great, but good enough.
I say give him a 3-4 year deal – draft a center, build Inside out , a corner, middle linebacker and a tight end that can block.

  64. CleanHouse Says:

I am not a troll because I’m not bought into the Baker Mayfield’s our next franchise QB/ Todd Bowles for coach of the year hype cycle.

    It’s fickle clickbait journalism

    It’s nonsense

We are 8-7, one game over mediocre. 2 more losses away from staff being fired.

Yes I like to win- do I think we are a seriously dangerous playoff team? No, but I’m interested to keep tuning in.

Sorry I’m not excited, but more skeptical.

Brady was the best to ever lace em up.

And frankly, we should have won two Super Bowls with him, if not for Bowles nonsense against the Rams.

  65. PNW Buc Says:
