“Last Legs”

December 16th, 2023

Hot-seat twins Baker Mayfield and Todd Bowles are very much attached the hip. That was a consensus during a chat between former Bucs receiver Keyshawn Johnson, Hall of Fame pass catcher Michael Irvin and longtime Mayfield lover Skip Bayless.

The trio was on FS1 this week assessing the NFC South.

Johnson says the Saints will emerge victorious, in part because they have the easiest schedule. Remember, Johnson pays close attention to the NFC South, in large part because his nephew is slimy Saints receiver Michael Thomas.

Irvin stands in the Falcons’ corner. He sees them as a team on the rise with special young talent, whereas Irvin sees the Bucs and Saints as older and fading. Irvin is really on Falcons bandwagon and compared them to the early days of the Cowboys dynasty in 1992. (Joe thinks Irvin needs a drug test.)

Joe wanted to slap Irvin and point him to the Bucs’ 13 rookies and remind him the Bucs’ top offensive guns are all 30 and under. However, Joe gets the take. Atlanta has big-time talent to go along with bad quarterback play and second rate coaching.

Bayless admitted that he loves Mayfield so much that he’s picking the Bucs to win the division with his heart. But Bayless said he knows Mayfield and Bowles are connected and are sharing a joint hot seat. Johnson chimed in to acknolwedge Bowles is on his “last legs” as the Tampa Bay head coach. Irvin didn’t argue. And Irvin fans know he loves to argue.

It’s all very simple. If the Bucs win in Green Bay tomorrow against a 6-7 Packers team, then the Bucs are legit and will be firmly in position to seize the NFC South, in addition to sitting in wild card position.

If the Bucs lose, then throw the Wild Card berth out of the equation and start praying for a miracle finish to win the division.

Of course, even if the Bucs play solid football in their final four games, Mayfield and Bowles could be elsewhere in 2024.

Mayfield is solid. My concerns are the 2 lawn chairs, um, er, cornerbacks that are fully capable of giving up 28 in any quarter. Thats the entire issue. Solve that riddle, and we’re good.

  2. Since76 Says:

The problem hasn’t been how many points scored against. The problem is scoring points. Getting in the red zone. You know solid Mayfield problems. Come on guys don’t except participation exceptance this is PRO football. You actually win and lose in this league.

  3. NE Fan Says:

Bring back…@ he snuck out wins against shat teams, how is he solid? He’s been taking on water since Houston game. He is and always beat wannabe starting NFL QB with one winning season under his belt. As a backup, I would take him any day. He ain’t winning anything. If your lucky the worst division in the league.

  4. Alanbucsfan Says:

Of course, even if the Bucs play solid football in their final four games, Mayfield and Bowles could be elsewhere in 2024.-
They will both be back if Bucs win 3 of final 4.

  5. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

The Bucs have and will always be at the end of the day win big games with stout defense. Remember last superbowl? 31-9 if memory serves. Which it may not these days!😂

  6. David Says:

Baker Mayfield is slumping, while the Bucs running has been improved .

In his last two games against Carolina and Atlanta ―both wins ― Mayfield has struggled, going an identical 14-of-29 passing for 202 and 144 yards, respectively.

Completing 48.3% of your passes in consecutive games will usually get you benched in the NFL.
They lose tomorrow followed by starting Trask and other young bench players .

  7. David Says:

Toilet Bowl and Mayfield are done in Tampa no matter how the season ends .

  8. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Mayfield is stout. 20 tuddies, 8 ints. So far this year, Thats ballin out playing for a defensive minded head coach.

  9. Pewter power Says:

Tied 1-1 with Atlanta because he Irvin we just beat them. 1-0 against the saints, leading the division and you’re scared to pick us because we’re old and fading? You’d think they had some common sense being that they played the game. Having said that all 3 coaches are trash, who’s going to lead their team to the playoffs probably not Bowles

  10. David Says:

Baker fans stop this Baker’s td to int ratios. Most of Mayfield touch downs are late in the game during the garbage times in the second half’s when the games had been decided .

  11. David Says:

Baker ranked 17th this season with 61% completions and the the losing record . Those stats are similar to his trash career stats.

  12. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Lawnchair

Mike Glennon in 13 games for the defensive master mind Bucs Head Coach Greg Shiano has stats that are almost identical to Baker’s through 13 games.

I guess you loved Mike Glennon and Greg Shiano and thought Glennon was balling out for the Bucs in 2013, right? SMH

    Please tell me you’re joking.

  13. Ed Says:

Less than 50 percent completion rate and 200 yards in the air isn’t going to take a team anywhere. That is scary bad quarterbacking.

Only a coach whose head is in the sand wouldn’t make adjustments to start moving the ball and scoring some more points.

Bowles should be desperate for more offense instead of praising the mediocrity of this offense.

  14. Gipper Says:

Canales is going to have to be more imaginative tomorrow. Nothing wrong with passing on 1st and 2nd down once in awhile. There is a school of thought that passing the ball sets up the running game. Would like to see crossing routes to Evans and Godwin once in awhile.

  15. BAKERSBucs Says:

David says isn’t that the time to shine at end of game that’s when most games r won u total jackass.most of u haters must have had a really creepy life with such hatred for no good reason.i am 1 to say that if Trask had been named starter & had a 6&7 record I certainly wud not b trashing him as a fan Even as a baker fan I support our team only fools act like u losers u r like little kids kicking &screaming when u dont get u r way poor babies

  16. BucsB4 Sapp Says:

Jake Browning has passed for 300 yard games in 2/3 of his starts. Mayfield has ONE in his last 33 starts. Cincinnati has the #32 rushing attack. Every website I looked out has our OL ranked over the Bengals….Poor production.

  17. sdm5821 Says:

Question, is Bowles in charge of the offense and play calling or is he concentrating on the defense and calling their plays? Yes, the buck stops with the head coach, but don’t place all the blame on Bowles and Baker for the Bucs marginal offense.

  18. BAKERSBucs Says:

  20. BucsB4 Sapp Says:

BakersBucs is really Emily Mayfield. Browning, Minshew and Howell better than Mayfield. Washington plays 4:games against Dallas and Philly. At least Howell on his second year.

  21. BucsB4 Sapp Says:

Minshew has 185 yards and 2 tds in the first half. He’s had some me drops. Pittman is out. Taylor didn’t play. Moss got hurt on the first drive. The team ran for 35 yards. Imagine no excuses, just production

  22. Tony Marks Says:

“If the Bucs lose, then throw the Wild Card berth out of the equation and start praying for a miracle finish to win the division.”

LOL shut up. If the pats were in this division the panther’s wouldn’t be dead last. They would have two more guaranteed wins

Before you come in here talking about QBs first get the NFl to switch Mac’s ints to TDs. Pat fans can’t initiate anything but laughter talking about picking a Qb after picking Mac

Good luck on draft day months from now when will be the only time you have anything of value to say or cheer about but only till the regular season starts and you show Carolina how not to pick a QB.

    @BakersBucs

In Belle Glade we don’t ride air boats in our spare time.

Belle Glade, where I’m from, is renowned for our youth football.

Football is a way of life there.

When the 49ers played the Ravens in the Super Bowl there were six kids from my hometown playing in that game.

Saban, Kirby, Dabo, etc… are regulars at our high schools.

I can tell you never played football.

Criticism of performance is not personal. I’m sorry you’re soft as cotton and can’t handle the fact that Baker Mayfield is playing identical to Mike Glennon.

It’s a fact. Facts don’t care about your feelings.

I think we lose tomorrow, win the last 3, win the NFC South.
Bowles still gets fired. That defense is unforgivable.

Mayfileld will go to another team-that has a good line, a running game. Meybe a defense and a good Coach.
Why stay here. No contract, no reason.

    Then we draft a QB
We’ve done that 26 times. Twice with the first pick.
Not one has a winning record.
Doug Williams and Shaun King did get us to the Playoffs. Never a SuperBowl
The other 24 were all considered major bust.
Cant wait to draft another QB. Spend 4-5 years, to decide he sucks.

    Its a Bucs life

  32. Craig Says:

Jordan Love is currently playing better than the Baker.

The Pack also has a more dynamic running game.

If the Bucs screw around like they normally do, the Pack will build a lead that Baker can’t cover.

Bucs are 6-8 after tomorrow. Then there will need to be decisions made. Keeping the status quo on the offense will leave the Bucs on the outside, looking in. It will also handicap them in training camp, because Baker will probably not be back.

There are two reasons for that. One is that he really id awful; two is that he balls out and the Bucs come close, then Baker will want to paid like a real QB.

  33. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Captain Tim

Absolutely, we do have poverty there, gangs and drugs.

Life is hard in the Muck.

    Football is the escape.

And if you think such players as Anquain Bolden or Fred Taylor, and the 50 plus NFL players from the Muck Bowl aren’t well known in circles in the NCAA and NFL, and that they aren’t aware of Belle Glade’s football prowess, well it shows how little you know about football Capt. Tim.

  34. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

What is hilarious is none of you Mayfield haters predicted the Bucs would win more than 4 games. Here is a list for the past first round QBs drafted from Baker Mayfield onwards. There are 5 QBs better than Mayfield of the 21 First Round QBS drafted from Mayfields year onwards. You people have basically going by those stats a 25% chance of drafting a better QB than Mayfield which gets to 5% if drafted after the 10th pick.

    Great to Good

    C.J. Stroud
    Joe Burrow
    Justin Herbert
    Josh Allen
    :amar Jackson

    Decent
    Trevor Lawrence
    Baker Mayfield

  35. Dee Says:

The Muck Bowl has produced 50 plus NFL players, and hundreds of college football players, including me.

It’s a fact that Saban, Kirby, Dabo, etc… are regular visitors to Belle Glade and Pahokee to recruit our kids.

And yes, life in Belle Glade is extremely tough with the high level of crime, poverty, gangs and drugs.

You and Captain Tim are right about Belle Glades problems being a fact, but then we’d be getting into politics trying to figure out how the politicians in our state do this or don’t do that to solve the problem, and that’s something I don’t want to do on a football site.

I have no problems with the truth.

It’s you Baker Cult Pom Pom Wavers who do.

You know what else is a fact @Tony and @Capt? Baker Mayfield is a career losing journeyman quarterback. He’s not the answer for the Bucs, and neither is Trask in my opinion.

Now everyone on this site awaits for you to admit the truth as well about the career losing journeyman quarterback Baker Mayfield.

  39. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Tony
    @CaptTim

These were the Pro Bowl players on Baker Mayfield’s team on offense in Cleveland:

    OLINE: Bitino, Teller
    WR: OBJ, Landry
    RB: Chubb, Hunt

He only had one winning season at Cleveland with those players in his four seasons there.

Baker had talent on his team. He just couldn’t win with them.

Baker is a backup quarterback. That’s all he’ll ever be.

  40. Chris Says:

    @belleGladebuc
Nobody cares about the youth football in your area or your college football career.
Your opinion doesn’t carry any more weight than anyone else’s. In fact it carries less because you obviously had something against Mayfield from the beginning. Probably something to do with him being from Texaa and playing at OU, vs your neck of the woods. Baker is having a good year so far. A few average games and a couple of below avgames, ut he has had several dropped TDs also, and the running game just got going 2 weeks ago. The book is not closed on Baker even though you want it to be becaus he’s done enough this season, even if they lose tomorrow to get a contract next year. NFL coaches see what he’s doing and THAT is what matters. I don’t expect a road win in Green Bay because it’s a tough place to play and we haven’t played well in all 3 phases in any game this year, but that won’t mean the season is over, or “Baker is done” or anything else except that they need to win the next one and move forward. ALL YEAR LONG, people like you have been saying “this next game will be Baker’s last” as if you can speak it into existence. Get a frigging life man.

  41. Since76 Says:

Mayfield is holding the offense back. I feel sorry for canales. He probably doesn’t have a choice who his QB is. He waited 13 yrs to have his hands tied like this. What a shame. Finally getting a running game but it doesn’t matter if you can’t pass. What an offensive mess. Watch all the NFL shows and no one has confidence in Mayfield.

  42. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Chris

You say nobody cares about my opinion, yet you spent a lot of time responding to me.

Your actions show that you care a lot about what I have to say by virtue of you arguing with me.

If I don’t care about someone, I don’t engage with them.

BTW, I love Texas high school football. Been to a lot of prep games there and it is such an awesome experience and the people and towns are amazing leading up to game night, as well as the game. Everyone should experience Odessa vs. Midland once in their lifetime.

  43. BucsB4 Sapp Says:

Belle Glade Buc…..I looked it up. You forgot 2 pro bowlers on offense. Jack Conkiln was actually all pro at age 26. Also, Austin Hooper was 26 and coming off 2 straight pro. Bowls at TE

  44. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Chris

The last two games the Bucs have rushed for over 125 yards plus in each game and Baker has struggled.

Baker has thrown for 144 and 202 yards and completed only 48% of his passes in those two games against two bad teams in the Falcons and Panthers.

    That’s not good quarterback play.

Baker did have a clutch drive against Atlanta to win the game, but every knowledgeable football fan will say that he had a poor game.

    It’s just not good enough.

When TB12 faced the horrible Dolphins, Jets and Bills teams in his prime he crushed them and had great performances against them. He AFC East during TB12’s prime was just as bad of a division as the NFC is now.

The NFC South with Carolina, New Orleans and Atlanta (and sadly my Bucs) this year is the worst division in football.

An elite quarterback would be crushing Atlanta and Carolina, especially with a run game that gives him 125 yards against the Falcons and Panthers.

    Sadly, that’s not happening.

  45. BucsB4 Sapp Says:

Just think if Atlanta gets Jayden D. If he’s 60-70 percent of the player CJ is, we would be on trouble. With a more talented supporting cast, he could put up just as good numbers. I’d rather have him throwing to #13 and #14 for us …

  46. Joe Says:

Why is nobody talking about the offensive coaching?

You haven’t been to this site very much the last few months, eh? 🙂

  47. BucsB4 Sapp Says:

This is the worse offense since 2014. We have a backup QB starting. I wouldn’t be so quick to blame play calling when our ” starter” is doing what he’s done his whole career. IJS.

  48. David Says:

Again Baker Fans stop posting. Your Qb has been stinking badly and slumping past few games. Bucs nearly escaped an ending season disaster game against Atlanta with his 48% completions and 144 yards. Baker and Toilet Bowls came so close to be fired last week. They were so lucky Atlanta missed 2 FG and their trash qb threw an almost pick 6 in his own 20.

  49. BucsB4 Sapp Says:

Right David. Forget QB. Forget football player. Baker Mayfield is the most overrated ATHLETE I’ve ever seen…..If he falls forward, it makes headlines. He needs hall of Fame type talent to look below average/ average. I couldn’t believe Cleveland took him #1. He is not a serious NFL QB. Lousy stats and bad W-L record. And he always play on mediocre to bad offenses.

  50. Daniel Hammond Says:

As long as Baker Mayfield is gone next year that’s all I care about and Mike Evans has to be signed in Winfield to Baker Mayfield is an average Quarterback at best he’s maybe a decent backup but he’s definitely should not be starting in the NFL

  51. BucsB4 Sapp Says:

He started now so bad. Howell is 4-9 on a 10x tougher division. He also 6 years younger and is basically a rookie. I think he has 16-17 starts. He has led the league in passing yards most of the year. And I’ll keep ponding this, Minshew is a better football player than Mayfield. Minshew has 3- 300 yard games this year. Has 4-30 point games. Mayfield has ONE 300 yard on his last 33 starts. His offenses has scored 30 points TWICE in his last 33 starts. 11-22 on that span and averaging 210 yards a game. His last 2 games at Lambeau… 333 yards,3 td, 5 int and 0-2. 57 percent completion LOL. What a bum.

  52. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Yeah, next year might see 4 new HC in the division. Just wondering if winning the division would save any of the 3 still standing? As far as Mayfield goes, somebody is going to offer him a decent contract along the lines of Geno’s, just not sure where. Every year is the same with rookie QB’s drafted. 0-2 “elite”, 2-3 serviceable.

  53. Big Ed Says:

Wow, with all these experts, trashing my Bucs, I wish you would find a team
that you could support ! The Bucs are the youngest team in the NFL at 25.3
years ! I’ve been a fan since 1976, and have always supported my team ! If you
dislike my team so much, feel welcome to find another team, so many whiners
like I’ve never seen before ! ALL THE WAY WITH TAMPA BAY ! “GO BUCS” GO
    BAKER MAYFIELD !

  54. 1sparkybuc Says:

I am prejudiced against short QBs. The only exception being Drew Brees. I desperately wanted the Bucs to acquire him when he left San Diego. The Bucs couldn’t afford him. He was decisive, elusive, deadly accurate at any distance, consistent, and raised the level of the talent around him. He carried the Chargers, and he carried the Saints. He regularly feasted on Buccaneer defenses. I hated him for that, but I respected his accomplishments. He was short and still elite. An injury cost him the job in San Diego, and an injury cost him a win against the Bucs to end his NFL career. A healthy Drew Brees would have this Buccaneer team already locked in for a playoff spot. Brees would be feasting every week with Evans, Godwin, and White, no matter who we were playing. Brees would have 300 yards every game with these weapons. Obviously Mayfield can’t because he’s handicapped. He’s short and he doesn’t have the vision to compensate for it. He’s okay as a spare, like that donut tire in the back of your car. He can’t carry a team. He needs a team that can carry him. Right now that’s not the Bucs. The Bucs aren’t going to win anything with Mayfield now or in the future. We need a QB who can see open receivers and make accurate throws. That’s not Mayfield. It might not be Trask, but Bowles is determined that we’ll never know for sure. Maybe the next HC will actually start Trask in a game. Btw, I will always root for guys that we drafted over the rejects from other teams. Fire Bowles. Drop Mayfield. Draft a QB, and have a legitimate competition with Trask and anyone else who might help this team.

  55. Bucs Guy Says:

Bucs finish 1-3, Bowles is fired, end up with a top 10 pick and new HC picks a QB in the 1st rd.

  56. Obvious Says:

It’s nice to see some intellect, HONEST fans posting concerning our needs at the qb position. It is tiring that certain sites support the efforts to quiet those who support a franchise qb that we need desperately and clearly let abusive attacks persist from those who would are clearly not actual Buccaneer supporters and rather are Mayfield fanatics.

There is a person who seems like a Buccaneers supporter and then there is another who must be in someone’s pocket. But the attacks and to not even be put in “time out” concerning the aggressive, nasty and abusive Mayfield supporters is the tell of someone being in another’s pocket or simply forcing their finger on the scale and is clearly either star struck or in the pocket. It’s just disgustingly “Obvious”…..

It’s good to see that we all can’t be sensored to push the mayfield narrative and that this distorted stance is being pushed back apon. We are clearly in trouble at the qb position and it’s depressing to see the few that some sites promote to attack the supporters of the betterment of the “team”.
In the end, the site is tentative because No matter who… The Owners of the Buccaneers Will Have The Final Say no matter the “agenda” being pushed by some..

  57. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Who’s the next head coach and which quarterback are we drafting?

  58. BucsB4 Sapp Says:

Buckeye buck chuck…… Geno got 3yrs/75M after a far superior season in 22 than Mayfield is having this year. I don’t see nobody offering him a starter contract outside TB. If Pittsburgh wants him, he can compete with Pickett. Between the quality the quality of the division, lack of weapons and weather, that would be a ugly marriage. And I just think Minshew is a better player with less baggage. It’s not as many openings as ppl think.

  59. BucsB4 Sapp Says:

WHY do ppl keep defending Mayfield by slamming Brady? He was cooked. Still alot better than this BUM. He was in his 23 Rd season!!!! Such a lame argument. Was the defense getting all these turnovers, pick 6s. Setting up short fields???NO. And the defense is allowing it’s lowest ppg in 15 years. He’s a bum and he’d made football unwatchable. When was the last time we had a offense ranked in the 20s???

  60. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    Thank you for admitting defeat.

When a person goes completely off topic like you have in attacking my hometown in a debate about Baker Mayfield being the answer or not for the Bucs, the off topic person has lost the debate.

The debate is my position being that Baker Mayfield is not playing well and that he is a career losing journeyman quarterback vs yours being that yeah he’s lost a ton in his career but this is why he’s lost a ton on 4 different teams and he’s awesome even though he losses A LOT.

Now somehow Belle Glade’s crime, poverty, gangs and drugs are now a part of this debate.

How is Belle Glade and its obvious problems relevant to a debate about Baker Mayfield?

It shows how weak @Chris, @CaptTim and @TonyMarks are intellectually and how immature they are by attacking a town and wanting to change the topic to politics instead of focusing on Baker’s performance.

  62. NE Fan Says:

Tony, if the Bucs were in the AFC East, just how many wins do you think they would have? Answer NOT many.SoJason Anthony, Baker is as good as Minshew, Wilson, Stsfford, Mahomes, Purdy, Goff, putting him in the same category as Tua is moronic. I think Mac Jones backup Baily Zappe has better stats. Baker is definitely in the suck catagory.

  63. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @NEFan

TB12, the GOAT, played in the worst division in the NFL in the AFC East during his prime.

The Dolphins, Bills and Jets back then are every bit as awful as the Falcons, Panthers and Jets are today.

The difference between Prime GOAT 🐐 TB12’s performance against horrible opponents and career loser journeyman Baker is Captain Obvious level.

TB12 destroyed horrible opponents and the Patriots easily defeated them in his prime.

Baker struggles against horrible opponents, barely defeating them.

These are just the facts and why Baker is not the answer for the Bucs.

Belle@ Was it a bad division or did the Patriots make those teams look bad? Before Brady NE.was.not at the top of that division. What you’re saying is when Montana won the NFC West was bad and when Dallas was on top NFC East was? No comparison there have been NO winning records of any NFC South team for 2 seasons. Bowles and Baker actually lucked out being in the NFC South, if not neither would have their jobs today.

    AFC East Team’s W/L Record From 2003-2019

    Jets: 120-152
    Bills: 118-154
    Dolphins: 108-164

I am saying that the AFC East was a horrible division from 2003-2019. The above team records during that time are horrible.

I am saying Brady made bad teams in his division look awful in his prime and he was the best big game quarterback in the history of the NFL when he competed and defeated good teams in the regular season and post season games.

I am saying that Baker in an equally bad division of football in the NFC South in 2023 in comparison to the 2003-2019 AFC East is failing miserably at destroying bad teams in his division.

I am saying that anybody who compares Prime TB12 to Baker, which has happened numerous times on this comment board, is insane and totally off their rockers because of the above facts.

So, I’m just wondering if a perfect passer rating is bad for a QB. I don’t know much about football so maybe someone could enlighten me, because I’ve heard some very enthusiastic people say that this Baker Mayfield guy is a terrible QB. They seem to take a great deal of joy in telling me how bad he is too, so maybe this Mayfield guy did something to these people that they hate him so much? IDK.

At NE fan, maybe Bowles and Baker should play in the NFC North since they are 3-0 against that division, and 2 were road games where Baker Mayfield play great. Actually he was perfect in one of those games.

@BelleGlade I’m waiting for your “strong” response.
And I never made fun of your hometown. I have humble beginnings myself.

Baker had a GREAT day today and hopefully it will shut up some of the critics. He was in the zone. Something like 22 of 28, 381 yards and 4 touchdowns. If The offensive line gives him some time, he can put up these kinds of numbers. He is deserving of respect. Go get ’em Baker Mayfield!!

All the loser scans Baker bashers who posted on Saturday have no brains. Baker proved you wrong, ha ha. He’s making millions more than all you lowly burger flippers on here
