Has Baker Mayfield Played His Way Into A New Bucs Contract?

December 18th, 2023

Baker Mayfield’s future.

In the Bucs’ current three-game win streak, there has been a constant. That would be Baker Mayfield has been really solid in big moments.

Yesterday, he was borderline brilliant. In the past three games, all Bucs wins, Mayfield has a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 7-to-1. Pretty impressive.

If this continues into the playoffs, Dan Graziano of BSPN can easily see Mayfield returning to Tampa nexst season.

Thought by many to be a bridge quarterback in a rebuilding Bucs season, Mayfield has played well enough to once again resuscitate his career and present himself as a legitimate option — for the Bucs or someone else — in 2024 and beyond.

The Bucs could absolutely decide to stick with Mayfield for a while if they don’t find their long-term answer in the draft.

Joe doesn’t think Bucs coach Todd Bowles wants anything to do with developing a rookie quarterback. And Joe doesn’t think Bowles is the coach to develop a rookie quarterback.

Look, no one with the Bucs is out of the woods yet. If the Bucs go 1-2 the rest of the way, that’s a losing record. And we all know what happens with Bucs coaches who have back-to-back losing seasons with Team Glazer — when their name isn’t “Chucky.”

So if Bowles comes back, Joe could easily see Mayfield starting for the Bucs next season. Bowles loves Mayfield. If Bowles doesn’t return, the Bucs likely will shop for a quarterback very early in the draft.

If Bowles doesn’t return, Joe would like to see Mayfield brought back and the Bucs go out and get Michael Penix or Bo Nix in the first round. Then let the rookie sit on the sidelines all year and learn while Mayfield plays.

That worked for Pat Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers and maybe Jordan Love (he’s rather inconsistent). Why couldn’t that work for a first-round pick of a quarterback for the Bucs?

  1. D-Rome Says:

I said it a few weeks ago, said it last week, said it yesterday, and I will say it again. If Baker throws for at least 25TDs, passes for over 4000 yards, completes more than 64% of his passes, and the team wins the division then it’s a no brainer. You bring him back. What team out there wouldn’t bring that kind of production back?

  2. Hawk Says:

Baker hasn’t played his way into a new contract (yet), but he also hasn’t been a healthy scratch.

  3. BillyBucco Says:

    No
Too much football left to be played!!!!!

  4. Fansince76 Says:

Yup, I would like to see him back with the Bucs.

  5. BillyBucco Says:

    Remember these 3 numbers.
    57, 73 and 77.
That is Bakers QB rating against Detroit, Philly and SF.
Only 2 300 yd games this year, both wins.
You could tell Baker was on yesterday, but good defenses make Baker look mediocre.
Unless that changes, for the first time in his 6 year career, then I say move on.

  6. SB~LV Says:

It’s nice to see them playing up to their potential, we’lll see how that matches with the top teams soon enough.
Two nice Mondays in a row!

  7. BrianBucs Says:

If the Bucs win out, and they should, then Baker and Bowles will both be back next year.
If they don’t then it’s a coin flip.

  8. LOL Says:

Yeah id throw him about 24mil a year for the next 4 years (really the next year with options to cut for the remaining 3) That way we can draft a QB with the 1st rounder.

Bucs need to trade some picks this year as well. Should position themselves properly to grab one of these top tier QB’s coming out in the draft. It is so very important for the franchise that they do IMO.

Anything other than that they should let Bake walk and commit to the rebuild

  9. zzbucs Says:

Three games left, if we get into the playoffs, I would resign him and keep the Coaching staff for sure.

This roster is not as talented as many think they are.

Plenty of football left, but if make the way to playoffs, hats off to Bowles and staff, and Mayfield too.

  10. Mr. Lucky Says:

It would be insane to let Baker go now. He’s got a healthy shoulder 2 years after surgery. Plus the O-line finally seems to be coming together as well. I think that the Bucs can win out.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

At some point the Bucs need to invest in their offense.

5 of the 7 last top draft picks have been defense.

i would like to see us either go all-in an
draft a QB early in round 1 (would cost us some picks)

    or

Resign Mayfield…….get hi a top TE, RG/C and another RB…

With Gage coming back…..that would be a much stonger offense.
    ]

  12. Mr. Lucky Says:

Compare Baker’s number to any of the rookie QB’s playing this year – I’ll take Baker

  13. BucsFan Says:

Love was drafted at #26, Rodgers at #24, and Mahomes at 10 in the 1st round of their respective drafts. Bucs will not have to move up much or not at all to get a solid QB in the first round. I would pump the brakes a bit and see how the rest of the year plays out.

  14. Jeff Says:

It’s one game. One great game but one game. He still took 5 sacks and Bucs got lucky and converted a ton of 3rd and longs. Bucs could still easily lose their next three and Bowles and Baker are gone.

  15. Beeej Says:

I would rather keep Mayfield and Trask, and use the pics for offensive and defensive line, and a safety

  16. Beeej Says:

All QB’s, even Brady and Mahomes, look like crap without adequate past protection, which seems better of late

  17. Conner50 Says:

Micheal Penix or Bo Nix are you serious, haven’t watched a lot of film on penix but he’s bounced around college and didn’t really do nothing till this year. Nix is trash idc how good his stats are from this year he took forever and a day to learn not how to turn the ball over, which I don’t think he could continue not turning it over in the nfl. He’s not gonna be a franchise qb in the nfl im gonna go ahead and call that. As for mayfield he needs to finish out the season still, he’s had more struggles this year than upside but he played extremely well yesterday

  18. bucsfaninOregon Says:

Maybe this, maybe that. The bucs could win out or loose out. However, only a crazed Traskie would say dump Mayfield. I watched “mobile, young, high draft picks (GB and AZ) this weekend miss on pass after pass. Backer was on target in the 10-20 yard range, Should ask those teams if they would like a little more accuracy like Backer has shown.

  19. Gipper Says:

    Jeff,

Brilliant analysis. Those sacks were coverage sacks. Funny how the “experts” who post to these pages don’t have the slightest idea what it is like to be in the pocket and have nowhere to go with the ball. Too much time at band camp instead of playing with the boys high school team. If Mayfield forces the ball into tight coverage, interception and then the following: “Mayfield sucks.” Mayfield’s numbers this year for the ENTIRE season are comparable to Patrick Mahomes. Maybe KC should draft a rookie QB with a high pick? I am hoping that Mayfield moves on next year. Pittsburgh would be a good fit. It would be worth it to see him play the Cleveland Clowns 2x per year. Should make you Bucs experts happy. Why not just trade for Bryce Young. Would give you experts another QB to work over next year.

  20. Nicholas Carlson Says:

How many QBs taken in a the first round next April will ever have a game like we saw from Baker yesterday? 1? 2? Out of how many?

  21. realistic-optimistic Says:

Geez, talk about hyperbole. He’s had a lot of stinkers this year and throughout his career. I give him a hearty round of applause for his performance yesterday. He played phenomenally. Now keep it up. Consistency earns contracts, not blips.

“You’re never as good as everyone tells you when you win, and you’re never as bad as they say when you lose.” — Lou Holtz

  22. Jack Clark Says:

If Baker Mayfield keeps tossing 4 touchdowns and zero interceptions a game then he deserves a 40 million dollar a year contract

  23. Tye Says:

Todd Bowels is NOT the Bucs future….
He will never get you to a Championship game much less SB!…
The Bucs need to go with the winning, proven formula as getting a modern OC turned HC IF the Bucs want to become a consistent winner season after season…

as for qb, Baker is better than any qb coming out of college and the best qb the Bucs have had beside Tom Brady…

  24. gotbbucs Says:

You don’t sign Mayfield to a new contract AND draft a QB in the 1st round. It’s one or the other. That’s totally counter productive.

It will all depend on what Mayfield’s contract demands are. I can go either way at this point. If the offense finishes strong and the team doesn’t get embarrassed in the playoffs, then there’s a discussion that needs to happen. If the wheels come off again, then it’s probably house cleaning time.

Yesterday was a fun game to watch on offense, but there are still plenty of defensive issues that drive me nuts with Bowles and crew.

  25. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Too much emphasis on QB. Shanahan’s offense and surrounding cast made Garoppolo look like a too ten QB. With the Raider’s, hot garbage. Purdy looks like a world beater, until he lost Deebo and Trent Williams. Mahomes is having a down year? Nope, he has pretty average receivers and Kelce. Mayfield is like every other decent QB, given time and a good supporting cast they can shine. He will get Geno Smith type offers next year, main question is will Licht be one of the suitors.

  26. Beeej Says:

We could upgrade a small amount at quarterback at the expense of a first round pick, and probably another pick or two from next year. We could upgrade a LOT by using those pics for edge rushers, center, guard, defensive lineman, which are the biggest deficiencies we have. Gholston probably in his last year, Logan Hall, JTS not likely getting new contracts, DW gone, Shaq MAY be gone, Ryan Neal prolly gone…. There’s a lot more to upgrade among those positions than there is a quarterback

  27. Buccos Says:

Mayfield has done enough to have earned a Geno Smith contract next year, hopefully with the Bucs and Canales as the play caller. Geno went down this year without Canales. He seems to be a QB whisperer

  28. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

The Bucs have fielded a team with $78,000,000 in dead cap money this year. Gotta payoff the SuperBowl. They are playing way better than everyone expected. 2024 will see some our free agents resigning for more money, others will be released. 2024 Bucs will see many new (hopefully better) players since they will have more cash. Who knows if Bowles and or Mayfield will be back. I am enjoying the 2023 ride!!

  29. HC Grover Says:

If Bakefield wins out and 1 playoff game then yes.

  30. A Bucs Fan Says:

Not yet. It was a career game against a bad defense whose coordinator should be fired. Still have to credit Baker though! I read that there has only been 87 games since with a perfect 158.3 rating since 1970. That’s 15,000 games and there were much worse defenses than the team they played yesterday. It was also the 1st one in Lambeau field for an opposing QB. I hope the offense has found its groove and it’s like the 2020 season in the respect. Let this gam be a spark that both Baker and Canales can build on together.

  31. T. McGee Says:

I’ll line up for season tickets to see Baker Mayfield.

    Sincerely,
A few hundred fans that also thought Jeff Garcia was the answer

    Not me.

  32. Elite Vita Says:

What if Baker signs elsewhere? Who then would we play as QB? Trask? I doubt that. So we draft one, a good one in the 1st round. How would Baker feel about that? So what is the path forward for the Bucs?

  33. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bowles and Mayfield will be back. Bucs will likely take a WR in next year’s 1st round. Adding FA Josh Allen of Jags would be awesome.
Bucs are building another championship contender- rebuilding NOT

  34. Conner50 Says:

Let’s see how we finish the season before we start talking draft

  35. BucU Says:

Luckily we don’t have to make these decisions now. It will all play out accordingly.

  36. Bucsfanman Says:

Baker has played solid all year. He’s had his ups and downs just like any other QB. You’re in denial if you think otherwise.

I would be in favor, contingent upon how we finish, of retaining him.

  37. godlovesbucs Says:

Look, he had a great game. Probably the best game of his career. He leads the team and is a great locker room presence.

He also had 2 games where he completed 50% of his passes just before this game, against Atlanta and Carolina. That is who he is. He will have great games and terrible games. Not sure if he is worth signing to a long term contract.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Elite Vita, I truly doubt he would take another team if the bucs offer him a fair contract.

Last night, he finally won me over. I won’t be rooting against him anymore this season.

If he can lead this team to beat the Jags? We may just be Superbowl bound.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. How he does the rest of the season is what should determine whether he gets a contract.

All I know is, even though they still have not beaten a winning team…and that’s important…they played like a playoff team yesterday. That was the first time in two years I felt like they maybe could win in the playoffs.

    So…I’ll gobble down that crow.

The real sign in the off season is when we see if free agents want to leave or stay.

  39. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

Joe: “Has Baker Mayfield Played His Way Into A New Bucs Contract?”
    ——————————————————————————-

I like Baker but his lack of accuracy on the deep balls at times and lack of consistency concern me. He played great yesterday but the week before was not good at all.

If he keeps playing the way he played yesterday (other than holding onto the ball for almost 5 seconds when he was close to his own goal line) for the next three games he certainly will have played his way into a new contract as a starting QB in the NFL, either here in Tampa or elsewhere.

If I was the GM I would consider bringing him back but would look at ALL the options going forward and choose the one that will be best for the team. If the O-line takes a big step forward next season maybe we can coax TB12 out of retirement. 😉

  40. Ricki Says:

We need to have a consistent run game if you want to keep Baker.

  41. Tampa Stadium on Buffalo Says:

Next 3 decides the faith of thus franchise for the next 3 to 5 years. If Todd wins the next 3 games and we win game one of the playoffs. MAYFIELD signs a 4 year deal for 80 mill.

  42. JBuc Says:

Keep Baker. Get Trask more playing time to see what we have there. Look for a QB next year if Trask isn’t our guy. But see what we already have in him. Might be Brock Purdy #2. Draft O-line and offense

  43. Mord Says:

If the Bucs make the playoffs, definitely sign Mayfield and draft BPA.

Mayfield has been solid while his coordinator learns how to coordinate and while his line learns to work better together and run block. His numbers speak for themselves, his effort and leadership are legit. And it’s hard to think of any veteran QB that I’d rather have outside of the franchise-entrenched/not-soon-to-be FA elites around the league (who he seems to be outshining in some cases).

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Coming into the season I had many concerns:

    – Offensive Line. I knew it would be bad for a while.
    – Defense always seems to start slow, then gets rolling. (didn’t happen this time)
    – Baker Mayfield. With less than a 40% career winning percentage, I def was not sold on him. And with good reason, I still believe. But I said all season long that he could prove himself to me.
    – The Running Game. I was, and still am not sold on White alone. I think he is quality depth, but I do not believe he can handle the load himself. He’s getting tons of opportunities though, and that is bolstering his numbers a little…just enough to make him look slightly average.
    – Devin White. I did, and I still do believe Devin White is a quality player. I do not believe he demanded a trade…merely suggested on if the Bucs could not afford him. He has splash plays…but he also blows plays. Bottom line…money. He wants it, and he has not earned it yet.
    – Lavante David. I love the guy, but he is probably going to retire after this year. That means White may be the only Middle guy we have to replace David. That still concerns me.

When things got rolling, I was concerned that we could not beat a quality team. I admit, my standards are high…but not unreasonable. I want a winning team. That means they must win against winning teams.

So if the Buccaneers beat the Jags…which will be the toughest game of the year…then I think they are ready for a run.

As to those bragging to the Baker Haters…seriously…it took this long for Baker to prove anything. Most of us are not haters…just we were not convinced yet.

I will say…things are coming together just in time for this coaching staff.

Bowles finally did something to impress me. As expected, he went prevent when it looked like the game was a lock…but what really impressed me was the fact that it was a trick to get Green Bay to drop their guard…and the Bucs suddenly came hard at them.

Bowles also let go of the offense…and he was smarter on time management in the game. If we get 2 games or more into the playoffs, he deserves to come back. The guy is boring as watching paint dry though.

  45. Allbuccedup Says:

Might as well sign him to a long term deal. This organization has not been able to develop a young QB so why waste another draft pick ie Trask!

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So, at this point…Keep Trask (cheap), see if Mayfield earns that contract…and draft a QB in the top 3 picks. Let Trask compete as a backup.

Of course, Track might decide to move on, and I wouldn’t blame him.

  47. orlbucfan Says:

No, no more QB fossils. NFL football is a violent, young man’s game. It sure is nice talking playoffs instead of draft picks during the Holidays.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Allbuccedup, still got money issues, and that would not help them. So long term? Not so sure.

I don’t think he’ll get top dollar, so he will be cheaper (unless he takes us to the superbowl…then our cap is in huge trouble).

But…outside of a SB appearance…3 years tops. Reasonable salary.

I’m still concerned with the Fitzmagic trap. I loved Fitz as a person. He was great in interviews. But the Bucs bought in on him because a good year, gave him a contract, and then he sucked after that.

    So I’m still a bit…cautious.

  49. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    orlbucfan Says
    “No, no more QB fossils.”

I would accept almost anything to get another ring. The offensive line seems capable of keeping the QB from injury…so depending on the fossil, it might work out.

    Not gonna happen though.

  50. Bucsministerfuller Says:

Unless something truly horrible happens in the next 3 games i say we keep Mayfield give him another year to gel with Canales and that offense.
Use the picks to build a world class defense.
We’ll be fine, it’s the Tampa way.

  51. Bucs56 Says:

Evans gets paid first. I don’t care if his final contract year he crumbles. He earned it.

  52. Cobraboy Says:

This is easy: If Bowles stays, Mayfield stays.

  53. Tbbucs3 Says:

Licht loves Baker and what hes providing both on and off the field.

Not only is he producing at a top 15 level but hes also matured greatly from who he was in college and is a much needed leader for this team.

  54. Tbbucs3 Says:

Guarantee if you put Baker on the 49ers he does just as good as what Brock Purdy is doing. Build a team (especially a defense) around Mayfield instead of drafting overrated Bo Nix.

  55. Student of the Game Says:

This year isn’t over so talking draft is silly. You don’t even know who is staying or going. Yes Mayfield has earned an extended contract. No draft pick is going to be as good next year. If Mayfield doesn’t com back you can bet Evans is gone. If you want to speculate draft picks, go for O-line and defensive line. Free agent linebackers, DB, maybe a receiver or mid-round draft. Make the players you need that are already on roster know you are serious about making a deep playoff run next year.

  56. Student of the Game Says:

Tbbucs3, absolutely! QB is not the current Bucs problem. Whomever any of these posters consider the best QB in the league is, you can bet they have a strong supporting cast. On the 49ers, Baker would be All-Pro this year. Football is the ultimate team game.

  57. Allbuccedup Says:

Bonzai I believe if the bucs make the playoffs Licht will try to sign him to a team friendly 2 or 3 year deal something like 2 year 30 mil and shove 15 mil down the road he will only count 5 mil against the cap. Then sign Evans and Winfield and let White walk. But then again if someone offers Mayfield more he will leave.

  58. Birdie Says:

    Yes he has.

  59. Terry O'Neal Says:

I absolutely believe Baker deserves a good, long-term contract next year. Why go back to square 1?? By next season he will have fully absorbed the new offensive system. Canales finally unleashed the passing game yesterday and look what happened. I’m more worried about the defense.
Also JOE I just noticed that Rachaad White is quietly closing in on 1,000 rushing yards- 222 attempts 834 yds 3.8 a/p/c 5 td’s. Thoughts???

  60. Let ‘em bake Says:

Evans will be difficult to sign. If kc offers the bank, mike is gone. Baker is priority one. At 28, he’s your qb for the next 5 years. Know what he hasn’t done this year? Lose a game ( unlike Ridder) . He will end up top 15 qb, which is more than sufficient with a strong supporting cast. The way he has kept the int s down this year is a testament to his growth and willingness to adapt his style of play . The bake/ canales duo could be the next stafford/ mcvay…let’s hope it continues to evolve to greater things moving forward.

  61. Conner50 Says:

Let’em bake says baker is priority one.
No not until he finishes the year out he’s not. He does average the next 3 games he can sign elsewhere. The guys who have been playing solid consistently who are getting signed first will be Winfield,Wirfs and Evans

  62. WyomingJoe Says:

Baker has already stated several times that he wants to remain a Buc. He wouldn’t have openly said that if his goal was to negotiate a long-term deal with another team. Sounds like he’s also open to a team-friendly deal, but would probably walk if the Bucs drafted a QB in the first round. Strengthen the O-Line by drafting a center and maybe a guard. Also a pass-catching TE if available. Do that and Baker will win big.

Btw, Baker’s best game might have been in 2020 when he beat Joe Burrows while completing 22 straight passes and throwing 5 TDs. Also, Baker has beaten Burrows all three times he’s played him. He also threw for over 340 yards in three games against the Ravens. So the guy can play. No mystery there.

  63. Bake Show Says:

If they waste their 1st round pick on a QB they aren’t making the playoffs again next year. The problem is not QB. Fix the defense and offensive line or else you will have the same issues next year you have this year. If you only offer Baker a one-two year contract I hope he takes a long term deal somewhere else.

  64. Shane Callahan Says:

Critics of Baker either don’t know football or only pay attention to individual stats. Period.

  65. SlyPirate Says:

    Beeej Says:
    Remember these 3 numbers.
    57, 73 and 77.
That is Bakers QB rating against Detroit, Philly and SF.

    ^^^^^^^

GREAT TAKE! The Bucs have ZERO wins against +.500 teams. Don’t get over excited about a QB or HC that can’t beat good teams.

  66. David Says:

Here comes Joe with his love for Baker after one win over another team with losing record. Three wins ?? Two of them had nothing to do with him throwing less than 150 yards and 48% completions. Baker and the HC are trash.

  67. Cobraboy Says:

I’m pretty sure Mayfield knows that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

  68. Shane Callahan Says:

If you knew football and saw his subpar completion percentages and put that all on Baker, you have proved the point I was making.

  69. Let em bake Says:

There’s the David we know and love….😊

  70. Shane Callahan Says:

First walk-on to win the Heisman. Turns around the Browns franchise. He couldn’t turn around the Panthers, in 6 games. Who could? He shines as best as he can with a depleted Rams team. Then, he plays better than the GOAT with the Bucs. I seriously think they’re are tons of morons on this thread.

  71. Shane Callahan Says:

Sorry for the typos. I’m an English teacher and lifelong coach. My bad.

  72. David Says:

Baker fans are calling Bucs fans as morons.
Morons are Baker fans who comparing the trash Baker to the GOAT. LOL.
You are only three more games to follow your trash Baker to another dumpster city.

    Joe,
Stop exciting Baker fans after a win by the resign talks.

  73. Ultra Says:

“Why couldn’t that work for a first-round pick of a quarterback for the Bucs?” or a second-round pick that sat behind Tom Brady for 2 years…

  74. D Cone Says:

    Buccos Says:

Mayfield has done enough to have earned a Geno Smith contract next year, hopefully with the Bucs and Canales as the play caller. Geno went down this year without Canales. He seems to be a QB whisperer

Geno Smith is down this year because he is a Sub .500 QB. Even a 125 average Bowler can hit for over 200 but the Law of Averages soon catch up. QB’s have a great year, if a game above or below 500 is one, get a nice big extension, and go on to lose more than they win. league is full of them. They are called Back Ups.

  75. Buccos Says:

David- you are the definition of a troll

  76. Buc king Says:

It’s best not to get to high or low in baker..coming off his best game of the year let’s be real he hasn’t look sharp..
Started the year with holding the ball running for 1st downs.
He tends to hold on to the ball to long in the pocket and doesn’t particularly throw good on the run.
I will say he’s tough guy and shakes hits off.
I love to hear how he’s team feels about him.
I think hes not good at going through his progressions and pre reads of defenses.
This is his first year with a new o cord that just learned to start calling plays for a team.
I feel like the offense took a quite a few steps back after Brady left but its to be expected when it’s the goat you’re following up.
The run game has got better at times but it’s been mostly trash so he doesn’t have that to rely on.
    I give bake a 7.3 ou of 10.
He played 9.3 verse the packs.
If he can keep on the 8.5 to 9s the rest of the year..get us in the play offs and win a game I be ok with him taking another year again if the coaching staff stays in place.
If we fire the coaches I rather him walk and the new coaches get their guy.

  77. Buccos Says:

D Cone- Only problem with that take is that a healthy Mayfield has proven that he is a winner. We lost 2 games this year that we should have won because of Mayfield’s heroics with a roster that is strapped with $78mm in dead cap money. Our record should be 9-5. Combine that with what he did with the Browns before he got hurt and you’ve got a franchise QB. He is much better than anyone else we could get next year. Combine that with his familiarity with our system. Add to that he could possibly sign a team friendly deal and you have an easy case to re-sign him. Plus his age. He is in his prime years right now and fully recovered from his shoulder injury. I could go on but that is enough

  78. Tbbucs3 Says:

Were getting top 15 production from a QB on a $4 million salary. Theres 0 reason for anyone to be complaining.

  79. Tbbucs3 Says:

Scratch that, after yesterday Baker is currently sitting at 9th ovr in QB rating……

    Hey Baker trolls…..STFU!

    Joe Says:

That worked for Pat Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers and maybe Jordan Love (he’s rather inconsistent). Why couldn’t that work for a first-round pick of a quarterback for the Bucs?

Rodgers 1st full season went 6-10. Seems like the only Coach willing to put his job at risk or balls to get his guy the Games he needs to succeed is Smith @ Atlanta. Reich didn’t have a choice. Ridder is 8-9 in his first full season worth of games and although he has less TD’s and More Turnovers he played well enough to be a game off of the Leader in the Division.

Would think that Joe should have been alright with Trask going 6-10 this year to get his feet wet if he really practiced what he preached. Unfortunately the League has become Win Now. Teams would rather bring in a boarder Line has Been that take the lumps. Carolina is taking it’s Lumps this year. Next year they could be competing with the Falcons for the Division and Bucs could be back to their Basement Dweller Status of years past.

Bucs will regret that they didn’t do it this year when either Trask moves on and succeeds elsewhere or Mayfield puts up a season 3 games under 500in year to to get him back on his career average trajectory.

Only 8 1st Round QB’s have won a Super Bowl and one wasn’t even playing.

  81. Anon Says:

Bucs already won too many games to draft a QB. If you want to take another Trask prospect to fill preseason reps and end their career with 0 starts go ahead but I don’t see the point.

  82. Since76 Says:

No. He has had 2 good games with the bucs out of 14. If the light has been turned on and he continues to play decent then I would say at the right price. Other wise draft a franchise QB. 1 good game and 1 great game does not earn a big contract. That is like putting on a blind fold and throwing darts. Every once in awhile you’ll hit the bulls eye.

  83. NYbucsfan Says:

He just had two trash games in one good game how about a little consistency before you go and pay him big money? Let’s not make the same mistake that Seattle just did.

  84. The Southest Buc Says:

I feel confident with Trask on the bench and Mayfield balling. I would use that first to the best player available or make a little reach to grab a good player in an area of need. Maybe a QB is the answer there, but again…. Not sensing the priority.

  85. Buccos Says:

I would roll with Baker and Trask and take a WR, RB, or TE with first 2 or 3 picks actually. All offense first 3 picks. Give Baker some more weapons

  86. Scoobe Says:

Packers defense before the game was the 8th ranked pass defense and only allowed 14 pass TDs on the season. Stop saying the Packers defense sucked. It was good offense that made the defense suck.

  87. optimisticbucsfan Says:

    $40 mill X 4

    $100 mill guaranteed

Licht is the best GM ever!

    Go Jason!!!!

  88. optimisticbucsfan Says:

Take comparables…he’s getting $30 mill or more per yr

QB is by far the most important position

Anyone thinking Baker is signing for less than $30 mill per is probably a casual fan.

  89. garro Says:

    Money…Money…Money

I have no problem bringing Baker back. But not for franchise QB money. At this point unless he takes us very deep in the Playoffs he is not a franchise QB.

If he doesn’t and we pay him like one we essentially shoot ourselves in the foot. And we still don’t have that elusive franchise QB. Only now we can’t afford one if he comes along.

Trigger alert for some here…Trask. Cheap. We still have no clue what we have there.

Draft…Crap shoot! And we have other major needs! (tank or not to all with the loser mentality)

    Go Bucs!
