Cody Mauch Ahead Of Schedule?

December 20th, 2023

Development.

It seems Cody Mauch is turning into the NFL player the Bucs warned us about.

The Bucs liked Mauch, a left tackle at North Dakota State who the Bucs shifted to right guard. He was drafted, in part, because of his ornery style of play. That showed in the win over the Stinking Panthers when Mauch baited Carolina pass rusher Brian Burns to take a swing at him. Burns got tossed after he belted Mauch upside the head.

To his credit, Mauch’s lone reaction was to mimic a referee throwing a flag.

Mauch’s violent reputation can be seen below in a video clip shared by Evan Closky of WTSP-TV Channel 10. Notice how Packers defensive tackles switch up on Mauch trying to lure him into chasing to allow a hole for a second tackle to run through and clobber Baker Mayfield?

Instead, Mauch went after his man with violent hands pushing him off the line and giving Mayfield a pocket from which to throw.

Joe is an acquaintance with a guy who used to play offensive line in the SEC. He told Joe that Mauch is developing at a faster pace than Alex Cappa when Cappa was a rookie.

It seems the Bucs got a good one.

    So glad we got Jason calling the shots instead of these so called fans who like to rag on him. He’s fireside for 1 HOF player in 13. If 78, and 31 keep it up for as long as 13 has they will be on to so he has potentially 3 HOF players he’s picked. Soo many other things to give him credit for like the SB getting BA out of retirement building a team that brought the greatest to ever play and his posie. Only other person I would want to be our GM would be John lynch only cause he’s my favorite player of all time and he’s done a hell of a job in San Fran. He still doesn’t has a SB like we do tho 😏

    Every single Manager has hhis goods and his bads, Jaosn is not an Exception, he has his Aguayos, Lovie Smith his Benenochs his Seferian Jenckins his Winstons his Hargreaves and I can keep on….on the other token he has his EVans Marpets Wirjs Winfields Brady´s Vea´s and I can slo keep it up….

    Also he had very bad seasons and very good once, even a SB…

    IMO he is a good GM, and I would keep him….No doubt in my mind

    Credit to Licht. Keep drafting kickers. Camarda wins us games and is arguably the best at his position. Matt Gay turned out ok. The kicker now is solid too.

    Trust Licht to take some swings and misses. He put together the roster that lured Bruce Arians and then Tom Brady. Trust he is going to build our trenches further and we will be winning ball games. Love his philosophy of trench players.

  4. Buddha Says:

    Lynch will get his Super Bowl this year.

  5. Brandon Says:

    In Cappa’s defense, Mauch came into the league probably two years older than Cappa was when he arrived.

  6. Weebs10 Says:

    9 or 10 wins with this salary cap strapped squad will be mighty impressive.

  7. Buddha Says:

    Licht’s track record is impressive. Glad that the owners hung in there with him after a shaky start.

  8. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Licht definitely has a “type.”

  9. lunchmeat Says:

    Let’s enjoy Licht while we can.
    I am scared senseless of New England coming after him once Belichick retires. Do the Glazers have enough football sense to outbid Kraft?

    Hey Joe, I know you’ve talked about Zyon Mccollum’s emergence but I thought you might want to know just how drastic it is from 2022 to 2023:

    Completion% Allowed: 72.7% -> 58.9% improved by 13.8%
    Passer Rating Allowed: 118.7 -> 91.4 improved by 27.3!
    Missed Tackle%: 11.1% -> 5.3%
    Average depth of target: 11.1 yards -> 13 yards
    Yards/Completion: 13.5 -> 12.7 improved by .8 yards
    Yards/Target: 9.8 -> 7.5 improved by 2.3 yards

    Teams are trying to target him deeper than last year and yet he’s allowing significantly less yards despite that.

    We take it for granted how many serviceable right guards Licht annually pulls out of a hat. This guy knows how to cobble together an O line. I really wish we got to see Jensen with the two brawlers he has on the right.

    ECBucs:

    Where did you get that intel? Good stuff.

  13. orlbucfan Says:

    ECBucs: does Izien have enough data for you to run it on him? Yeah, I know he’s a rookie, but I’m curious. Thanks. I’ve been a Licht fan ever since he signed Cam Brate as an UDFA.
    Looking at that video clip, that DB was hanging all over the receiver like a blanket. Why are the refs so biased about calling it DPI?

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Does he have “violent” feet like Kancey?

  15. Rod Munch Says:

    Remember all those people earlier this year saying to bench him. I do.

  16. TheMIGHTYVH Says:

    Still wish we had Cappa (and Mauch)… and Whitehead. To bad JL wanted to spend the dough on JD and CD… They are not worth what Bucs are paying them. NO WAY

  17. ECBucs Says:

    Joe, orlbucfan:

    All the data is per PFRs advanced defense stats.

  18. Mark hardt Says:

    A big red viking beast.

  19. Capt.Tim Says:

    Been watching him all year.
    This kid is already a very good guard. And he should become great!
    Still makes an occasional rookie mistake- but he is strong, violet and plays hard every snap.
    I think hes the best player on our line right now- although I think Wirfs is starting to play better at Left Tackle. Wirfs is playing against the best in the league hes struggled, but improving.

    With Mauch and Wirfs, we have 2 really good building blocks.
    Goedeke isnt bad at RT. Have to see if he improves this off season.

  20. garro Says:

    Violent quick hands!
    But could have been flagged on that one.

    Love the toothless one!

    Go Bucs!

  21. Daniel Z Says:

    It was rough having Cappa walk in FA and Marpet retire so young in the same year. I’m pretty sure the front office was caught out by those moves. You throw in Jensen’s knee injury, and it’s easy to see why the O line struggled the past couple seasons. Good to see some of the younger guys like Mauch developing and Wirfs successfully moving to left tackle. Hopefully they can grab another starter in the 2nd or 3rd round this year to further bolster the trench.

  22. Rob Says:

    He’s going to be a very good player for the Bucs. I’d like to see him at LG going forward. Draft and elite LT or RT and move Goedeke to RG. Then move Mauch to LG. I still think we need an upgrade at C.
