Can Baker Mayfield Save The Season & The Staff?

December 3rd, 2023

Baker Mayfield didn’t play well today. Again.

Last week in Indianapolis, Todd Bowles hung three of the Bucs’ six sacks on Mayfield. That can’t happen to a veteran NFL quarterback in a must-win game. A week earlier, Mayfield had two turnovers and held the ball too long against San Francisco.

Against the Panthers this afternoon, Mayfield was 14-of-29 with a bad interception, which is unacceptable. (Don’t start talking to Joe about rain.)

With five games remaining, Joe believes the Bucs’ only chance to make the playoffs is for Mayfield to snap out of his funk and play close to his potential. The Bucs won’t win more than one more game this season if they play again like they did today.

Mayfield’s season has gone from him playing pretty well to not playing well enough. It’s as simple as that.

Joe believes Mayfield, when he’s playing near his best football, is better than Saints QB Derek Carr and Falcons QB Desmond Ridder, as well as Panthers QB Bryce Young.

The Bucs play each of those teams again and Mayfield needs get his game back to where it was early this season. He’s now riding a four-game interception streak.

The Bucs also have a game remaining in Green Bay. Mayfield might not be better than surging Packers QB Jordan Love, but Joe has doubts whether Love’s two-game hot streak will continue tonight against the Chiefs. Joe’s point is that Mayfield has the ability to outplay Love and that will need to happen, too.

The Bucs also have a home game remaining against the Jaguars and Trevor Lawrence. Joe won’t dare put Mayfield in Lawrence’s class.

Often in the NFL, quarterback play determines the won-loss record and the job statuses of a team’s coaches and many players. The Bucs seem to be in that boat. The defense isn’t good enough to carry the team, so it’s going to have to be Mayfield and his weapons.

If Mayfield can’t step up immediately and consistently, then Joe is sure he’ll be among those ordering moving boxes for Christmas.

    No, he cant.

  2. Davenport Says:

    Simple answer.
    NO

  3. Miller5252 Says:

Baker didn’t look good today. He seems to be getting worse weekly. After todays game I don’t have much confidence this team wins their division and the coaching staff is a big reason.

Anything to keep Trask and Trump out of the spotlight

  5. King Brutus Says:

Without Baker this team would be worse off our o line is awful

  6. Vlad The Impaler Says:

I think we’re seeing an anti-Trask conspiracy. It’s just like the media and a certain former president. They’ll do anything at all to keep him out of the spotlight.

  7. WyomingJoe Says:

Hey Joe, what game were you watching? Everyone could see that the ball slipped out of Baker’s hand. Watch the replay for God’s sake. It was pouring rain, C’MON! That’s nice, except QBs are supposed to be able to throw in the rain or recognize that they don’t have a grip. Joe did watch the replay. Didn’t see a tight close up on his hand. Regardless, the rain is no excuse in the NFL.–Joe

  8. realistic-optimistic Says:

Mayfield to snap out of his funk

What funk? He looked today just like he’s looked in every game this season. There is no funk, just a sub-par QB.

    Nope

  10. Ryan Says:

    Find out next week.

Win and the season lives. Lose and it’s practically over. Down 2 games and the tiebreaker with 5 games left would be too much

  11. Usfbuc Says:

No Baker can’t save the staff. He is just an average QB at best so when he is off he is a bad QB. Not the same as having an elite QB who is average when they have an off game.

  12. NJbucs23 Says:

    I would say NO!

  13. RGA Says:

What is all this talk of potential with Mayfield? He has struggled all season completing passes beyond 10 yards. He’s been in the league a while now, at some point you just have to acknowledge he’s a loser.

  14. Capt.Tim Says:

    No.
No one can save Bowles, or this season.
What Baker can do- is show that if he can with this lousy team and horrible coach- then He will win with a good line and a good coach.

If we draft a pass rusher, a guard and a Centet, then Mayfield will be mske this team a winner.

But this isnt a smart team. Never has been. We’ll draft some kid QB. Throw him behind this lousy line with no Run game.
And spend next season talking about how bad this kid sucks.
Next year- we are the Carolina Panthers

  15. gotbbucs Says:

This is the best you could have ever hoped for out of Mayfield. It has us at 5-7 and one step closer to nowwhere as far as figuring out a long term QB solution for this team.
Playing Baker this season was a last ditch effort for a floundering coach to try to save his job, whereas starting Trask for this season would have been the best decision for the long term health of the roster.
If Mayfield finishes this season relatively strong and saves this coaching staff and keeps them from drafting a QB it will set this franchise on the path to another lost decade +. One step forward for the current regime and ten steps back for the organization and fans.

  16. Rayjay1122 Says:

C’mon man, we suck. We just beat an awful team at home by a couple points. Big freaking deal. In the end we will most likely look back and wish it had of been a loss because Atlanta is kicking the snot out of this trash heap next week.

  17. Canabuc Says:

Baker is getting worse by the week.
He doesn’t have the physical size and or speed to play quarterback at a high level. He has arm talent and a great fighting mentalityand leadership qualities.

But he is not the answer he was a stop gap to give Bowles a respectable record and a mother year to maybe find an answer.

I think it’s time to give Trask a chance and see if he can be the guy. Yes he is in year 3 and coaches know….

But some guys are just different under the lights. Trask looks more composed and I think he is one of those guys who if given a chance at meaningful snaps might just surprised.

For the record I am Canadian and don’t give a rats behind what school a player comes from. If they are a Buc I root for them.

  18. WyomingJoe Says:

And here comes the Trask cult again! Time to crawl out from under your rocks and start to b*itch about Baker. It was pouring rain for most of two quarters. What can’t you understand? Accept the fact that BAKER IS BETTER…

  19. Jeff Says:

Baker would make a great backup for a contending team. That’s all he will ever be. And there is nothing wrong with that. He can make millions.

  20. Sc bucs fan Says:

No. We struggled against the worst team in the NFL.

  21. optimisticbucsfan Says:

    No

  22. WisconsinBucsFan Says:

Feel like I could throw piss poor passes to open receivers, hold it too long and get sacked… check down to a 1 yard pass… and play poor football but I will be 60 in 2 weeks ….. what is bakers excuse? START TRASK!

  23. Falconrap Says:

Geez Joe, really? Baker is playing like he always has. Sure, he played decent, though not great, during the early 3-1 run, but he’s reverted to being who he is. We had guys open all game, and Baker can’t throw the outs without throwing the line drivers that DB’s can reach in and get a hand on. He doesn’t know how to put a little arc on those and drop it over the receiver’s shoulder. And his deep ball sucks.

No, Baker isn’t the way to the playoffs. He just isn’t.

  24. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Unfortunately I don’t believe he can

  25. WyomingJoe Says:

Dear Joe, get real. Rain is no excuse in the NFL? Why not ask a few NFL QBs and see what they say about throwing a slick ball in a downpour. Don’t make me laugh…

  26. realistic-optimistic Says:

@gotbbucs, that is the truth. So true. One small step for Todd Bowles, one giant leap (backward) for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

    +++

Also, didn’t have his feet set. He did a tip toes jump pass going backwards. So….

  28. Gipper Says:

It was pouring down rain in the second quarter. Not sure what you expect any QB to do in those circumstances. The playing calling on 1st down was horrible, leaving too many 3 and longs. Mike Evans is on pace to have his best season ever. Sort of think Mayfield has something to do with that. Bucs finish season 9-8 and win division. Too bad for all the haters out there.

  29. BucsBeast Says:

    Joe.
The Defensive play calling is a HUGE issue.
Mayfield ain’t great either but, let’s be honest the Defensive play calling is trash.
The defense has given away more games, then offense

  30. Falconrap Says:

So Gipper, what’s the excuse for the 1st, 3rd, and 4th quarters where it wasn’t raining? What’s the excuse for not throwing the ball to the many open receivers we had today? For throwing out passes on straight line allowing DB’s to get there hands on them? Baker sucks. He just does.

  31. Kidfloflo Says:

What is the reason I think Godwin had retired every game!? If Mike is setting records, Stands to reason Chris is not dble teamed. Bowles needs to save his job, Canales needs to prove his creativity, Baker needs to look like a starter, and Chris needs to justify his salary, so why is this once promising young star so non existent??

  32. DFW Buc Says:

Todd “stubborn”Bowels is not saveable. The bucks are in the weakest division in football. Winning this division will be like being given a participation trophy.

  33. JCLV Says:

Baker didn’t have a good game, but if Canales calls another game like that one, the Bucs won’t win again even if he plays great. Just when he seemed to be improving he takes 3 steps back. 8 yard run on the first play was worst thing that could have happened.

  34. SufferingSince76 Says:

Neither Baker, nor any other player, can overcome the putrid coaching of the Bucs. Unless a miracle happens, or a couple of plane crashes, the Bucs will not beat Atlanta or NO, so no tainted division title this year.

  35. Irishmist Says:

Joe Flacco had a better game than Mayfield did today.

  36. Craig Says:

We are not a Trask cult. We want a consistent QB who even knows how a 4 minute drill work, one who can make sustained drives.

Baker cannot do those things. He screws things up too much to make a sustained drive. Too many times have I watched a game and seen him miss open receiver.

Not just miss the throw, but to totally miss that the player is even there. His thoughts of how a game should be played is not something an OC can change and it puts games in danger of a loss.

We need to see if Trask is a better answer. He looked that way for the Gators and we cannot discount him for his time sitting under Brady.

Brady was close to a perfect QB, but as a person he had as many flaws as the rest of use. We need to know if Licht has a curse in the 2nd round or if he might have hit one.

  37. WyomingJoe Says:

Irishmist: Flacco lost today by 18-19 points. And he didn’t have to play in the pouring rain.

Craig: I’d comment on what you said, but it was rubbish. I guess that no other QB missed passes today, right?! Oh, Baker also had three passes dropped today, or was it four? Why not mention that?

  38. danang Says:

    WyomingJoe 😭 = Me 😂

  39. 1#bucsfan Says:

Wyoming ball didn’t slip out. I watched the replay several times. He just lobbed the ball up there. He didn’t set his feet or step into the throw. Terrible terrible throw on his part. Also he missed a wide open ME13 for a 2nd time with no rain. Dude your hugging bakers nuts to tight. He’s bin in a 4 game back slide now. He is not playing good. Are you a Bucs fan or baker fan. Idc who plays QB they need to play better than what we have. Quit your bellyaching for him

  40. Greg Says:

Josh Freeman Effect 3.0…. just good enough for a few wins, which in turn screws us in the draft. Even if the Bucs make it into the playoffs.. then what? One and done at best? Tear it down and see what Trask has. New coaching staff, new QB, Mayfield is not the answer.

  41. NE Fam Says:

Love is doing pretty good 1st half. Mayfield is a 15 or below rated QB, NOT gonna happen. If he can’t play in the rain, the snow and cold isn’t going to be much fun to watch. I know some of you are going to come back with Cleveland but remember he had the best running tandem in the league.

  42. NJBUCS Says:

    No

  43. WisconsinBucsFan Says:

    not even maybe START TRASK!

  44. D Cone Says:

Love and the Packers scored two TDS in the first half against the Chiefs. First punt was with 18 seconds left in the half.

Bucs better win the division because Green Bay doesn’t looks like it will lose another game the rest of the way.

Won’t be a Wild Card in the NFC South so aim high and win the division.

6-8 going into week 16. Best case scenario.

  45. Crickett Baker Says:

I’d like to see Chris Collinsworth as our HC and Tom Brady replacing Goodell.

  46. JD12 Says:

I’ve never seen a fanbase latch on to a back-up the way Bucs fans have latched onto Trask. If the guy could play, you don’t go out and sign Mayfield in the offseason. Plain and simple

This team SHOULD be over .500 if they didn’t have a complete clown for a head coach. Bowles is absolutely killing this team right now. Canales also doesn’t seem like he should be calling an NFL offense. Blow up this coaching staff and make smart offseason moves and this team can be right back in the thick of things. Baker isn’t the answer but he certainly isn’t the number 1 issue right now.

  47. Voice of Truth Says:

They are EXACTLY the team we saw today- a very bad team that won because we played an even worse team

We will not win again, until we play the Kitties again

  48. Greg Says:

The simple truth is, and always has been, there are two Baker Mayfields. You never know which one is going to show up.

That’s always been the thing that drives people crazy. Jameis was the same way. When Jameis was on fire he was great…BUT. Ryan Fitzpatrick was even more streaky.

That pass to Evans today was a thing of beauty. The interception was a horror show.

Inconsistent play is the death of a game management qb which is what Bowles wants. He wants steady. That’s why many of us have said Kyle Trask has more upside. Baker at his best is better at this point. And it’s entirely possible that Kyle Trask will never rise to his ceiling.

Who knows? I am not watching practices.

  49. Stan says Says:

I kept telling you all Baker was not the problem. I might have said it at least a hundred times to anyone that would listen. Well I am here to say it’s starting to look like I was WRONG. He has been playing the last 4 weeks like he is scared but he should be playing like his life style depends on it. I am still his biggest champion and I am hoping he snaps out of whatever is going on. If he doesn’t I don’t think he will play here or anywhere in the NFL next year. Love the Bucs always.

  50. stpetebucfan Says:

Mayfield played his worst quarter of football of this season. When he limped off with the bad ankle even I was ready to see Trask.

But Bowles stuck with him and the next series he hits ME13 in stride for ME’ spectacular TD. He had the team moving on another drive when Otton got flagged for holding and move the Bucs from Carolina territory to 3rd and forever after a great play. At least Otton committed an “effort” penalty. For the 2nd week in a row Aaron Stinnie jumps offside. Penalities are still an issue.
Carlton Davis “manly” slamming a guy to the ground after wrapping up…luckily what should have been a TD mistake was contained to just 3 on the FG after reachiing the one.

Let me be the skunk at the party. The OL CONTINUES to show improvement.
Carolina has the 6th overall defense…it’s their offense that has sucked. And gee they got to pick the first QB in the draft and many here believe that’s the ticket!

For the second week in a row Rashad White looks like a real NFL RB. He doesn’t have a ton of experience, and like everybody on offense very little with Canalas offense. Now he seems to be figuring out his role and it’s freed him to run harder with more confidence.

Really can’t say much about the D’s performance with BOTH LVD and DW45 on the sidelines and the best backup hurt early in the game.

I feel good about Atlanta unless BOTH LVD and White are out again.

  51. Pewter power Says:

    NO he cannot

  52. Bucsmarley Says:

    Wyoming Joe
How many games have you seen Trask play with the starters. I can answer that none. Stop believing in your boy baker because enough is enough. He’s nothing more than a backup quarterback. You aren’t even willing to see the other option. Sound like a gop trumpet. What a clown

  53. Usfbuc Says:

WyomingJoe – what do you see when you look at Baker on the sideline? I see a guy whose body language says he is done. He looks sad and dejected, often times sitting alone when the cameras pan over him.

  54. WyomingJoe Says:

Gee Joe, I’ve just been reading reports how the rainy weather affected the game between the Chargers and Patriots. Seems as though other NFL QBs had a tough time throwing the ball as well. Can you believe that?

  55. Bucsmarley Says:

    Wyoming Joe
How can one be so sure of something you haven’t seen. We have seen mayfield for years and it’s as advertised. A middle of the pack backup qb. He was awful today, last week and…..,,,,, Not saying Trask would fair better but the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over getting the same results. Buttw not a gator fan in fact I’m I Miami fan but the boy balled out in Florida when given the opportunity. Love to know if more agree with your opinion or mine. Either way appreciate all buc support

  56. Usfbuc Says:

JD12 – you aren’t wrong, there is a lot wrong with the team but it’s also clear that Mayfield can’t consistently elevate the team either. I think a lot of people just want to see what Trask looks like in a game at this point because our coaches clearly aren’t great. So if we are all pretty much in agreement they aren’t great then we also shouldn’t blindly trust their player evaluations.

TB12 played in horrible weather at Foxborro and still produced. Didn’t hear TB12, Bellicheck or the Pats fans give excuses about rain or snow when TB12 was spinning it.

That’s the difference between elite in TB12 and below average Baker.

  62. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

3 words for you NO, NOPE NEVER. Doesn’t matter if he’s not the full problem. He’s not the solution . Fakerboi fans love themselves a middling qb who’s not as good as they praise nor as bad as those who hate him say he is but he is who we thought he was our eyes don’t deceive us and this has nothing to do with Trask. Fakerboi is an over achiever and under achiever all rolled up into one. Not tall nor fast enough athlete with a Napoleon complex because of his height. He tries too hard because he has no other choice because he knows he’s just not good enough. Drew Brees never had this problem.

  63. Bucsmarley Says:

We would be better off seeing what track is or isn’t. This team isn’t going anywhere. Before Wyoming Joe chimes in says but we will win our division..laugh out loud. Hypothetically you lose in 1st rnd and the only one making money is team glazer. Better for us to see for see the unknown than mayfield. It doesn’t matter because our new coach may actually see if Trask can play. I know you didn’t expect Purdy to be much either

  64. WyomingJoe Says:

Bucsmarley: I’m not quite sure what point you were trying to make. But I’m certain that I’ve seen Baker many more times than you have and he is a good to very good NFL QB. Someone who’s capable of playing great games.

Concerning Trask: I’ve only seen him play in preseason games, as well as that end zone pass that he botched a week or so ago. But aside from that, Baker is much better. And Baker was also much better in college. Of course, that’s my opinion.

    ———-

This is why I know your his wife. You clearly have a bead on his thought process. I think the sane people all see a dejected QB that knows he’s playing crappy football and likely realizes that if Trask gets the chance to actually start, it’s all over for him as a starter in this league. Nobody is going to sign him to start for them after this season. He’s a backup going forward. A rich one, though, so don’t worry about your lifestyle, hun, you’ll still be able to eat caviear and party hearty.

Its a really high level of the stupids.

Everyone pick the Qb we can draft, that can walk in One Buc, and make this lousy team a winner.
Better yet, go to the jumper station on the Skyway.
Scream this wonder rookies name, as you jump.

If Baker can win with no running game, and under constant pressure,
Imagine what he could do with a great line, and a dangerous running game.
If the Bucs arent smart enough, some Gm is watching- and thinking those same thoughts.

Baker took the always horrible Cleveland Browns to one 4th down play, in Kansas City, from the SuperBowl.
Hes drug this dead horse on his back all season.
He can win in this league

  68. Usfbuc Says:

WyomingJoe I doubt he is thinking about anyone posting on JBF or any other site. I don’t hate the guy just know he isn’t the answer at QB. I actually think if you had everything else perfect that he could be the QB of a winning team. Not sure if he could ever carry a team consistently which puts him in the same class as JW.

I think it was bad throw based on his feet and stance but I’m calling bogus on the above statement. I’ve been watching the NFL for 4 decades and significant rain has AWAYS affected the passing game.

  74. Conner50 Says:

WyomingJoe says that Trask botched the endzone throw a week ago…

You should go back and watch that play again then, cause it was right where the wr needed it to be away from the defender. Godwin couldn’t make the toe tap catch, was covered well too though. Need to face reality and that’s baker not being the future.

  75. D Cone Says:

Yeah Joe ya can’t throw the bal in the rain. Interception was a ball that slipped out of Baker’s hand. It was simple just another of his bad decisions. All the physical skills but lacks the mental aptitude.

  76. WyomingJoe Says:

BelleGladeBuc: Baker inherited a team that was 1-34 before he played his first game as a rookie. Although he played only 13 games that year, he broke Peyton Manning’s record for most TDs thrown by a rookie with 27. So what you’re saying is BS! And btw, Tampa has seen Trask play for three seasons. They know what he can do. That’s why he’s not starting.

We are not a Trask cult.

    ——-

that goes toward the evidence you are . No cult ever admits its a a cult.

“We want a consistent QB who even knows how a 4 minute drill work, one who can make sustained drives.”

Saw several from Baker today so you lose again.

“He looked that way for the Gators and we cannot discount him for his time sitting under Brady. ”

Only he didn’t sit under Brady. He sat under the backup Qb who sat under Brady so yeah pretty easy to discount a QB who can’t beat the backup

  80. WyomingJoe Says:

UKBuccaneer: Very good point. Can’t believe that there are so many haters on this site. I’d say that another way if I could, but I’d probably be bounced!

  81. Chris Says:

The Bucs were averaging g 2.8 yards per carry until that last run to seal the win.
Other than the ill advised pass that slippout of Mayfield’s hand when it was pouring rain, I didn’t see any big mistakes by Baker. He did have a couple of very nice 3rd down completions yet again, to keep the Bucs drives going. Carolina a is a desperate, wounded animal, and they are fighting for every game. They may upset the Saints next week. They are a bad team over, but never underestimate a wounded animal.

  82. WyomingJoe Says:

Tony Marks: Been wondering when you’d show up. Well said…

  83. Bucsmarley Says:

The simple truth is (this is for captain tony and Wyoming Joe)
My honest opinion and being a fan since the beginning. I’m in my 50’s so I ve seen a lot of football.

Baker Mayfield is a great backup qb that can win you probably 6 -8 games a season. Could be the best backup qb if he wanted to but his ego
    He plays with grit
But to short and not accurate on deep balls
    Dink and dunk

  84. WyomingJoe Says:

Baker also had 3 passes dropped. But who’s counting.

  85. Tb bolts Says:

Wyomingjoe is touched. He feels the need to reply to every person stating the obvious, that baker is a dog water QB.. because he knows its absolutely true. Bakey has gotten every excuse made for him this season but was exposed today when he struggled to appear even half competent against a 1-10 team. The writing is on the wall for this bucs season and all the baker boys feel reality setting in… they’ll most likely be fans of a different team next year since the bucs would have to be brain dead to sign mediocre journeyman baker again.

  86. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Wyoming

I’m on record saying that Baker is a below average quarterback. I’m also on record as saying that I don’t think Trask is the answer, but if you had asked me about Brock Purdy last year before he played I would have said the same thing.

The entire NFL agrees with my position. Every NFL team that was in need of a quarterback this offseason passed on Baker, and he signed a $4 million dollar contract. That tells you that anybody could have had him. I’m sorry that you can’t handle reality.

Bottom line, Baker is a losing quarterback. That’s what he is.

  87. WyomingJoe Says:

Bucsmarley: There you go again. The simple truth is that you don’t really know what Baker has done and what he can do again. In that sense, I almost feel sorry for you. Almost…

What’s the average age of the Kyle cult – 10 years old? You start out insulting him being Baker’s wife and then you yourself turn around and call him Hun like you are or want to be his wife

Only in the Kyle Cult do we see such idiocy.

  89. Chris Says:

It’s funy how so many will acknowledge that their is so much wrong with this team, but the only thing the haters want to talk about is Baker Mayfield. It’s always “ya, ya the teams bad, but let’s focus on getting Baker outta here because I’ve had a hard on for labeling that guy a lover, and I just want to be right about my argument”.

  91. WyomingJoe Says:

BelleGladeBuc: You must feel outraged and hopeless knowing that Baker may run the table and be back next year. It’s obvious that you know very little about how the NFL works. But I am impressed that the entire NFL agrees with you, lol!

  92. firethecannons Says:

  93. WyomingJoe Says:

TB bolts: Baker’s a “dog water QB?” What are you like 8 years old? Laughable…

  94. Chris Says:

Carolina held the Texans to 13 points just a couple of weeks ago, and held the Titans to 17 points last week. They beat the Texans, and the Texans are a good team. I’m so sick of the soft fans that say the “sky is falling” after EVERY GAME, INCLUDIG A W I N, and then the blame game ensues, and it’s almost always aimed at the QB no matter what happens. What a bunch of soft, casual fans. If you want to choose to be miserable and negative then go right ahead, but stop trying to make it miserable for othe fans, and players that can’t even respond to your hyperbole.

  95. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Wyoming

The Browns got rid of Baker and replaced him with Watson who they were okay having him sit out a season just so they could be rid of Mayfield.

The Panthers got rid of Baker and replaced him with PJ Walker.

  96. RC Says:

Can Baker save the season and the staff. Yes. What will it take? First, Baker must ball out. He needs to look great. Second, Make the playoffs and win one game. Making the playoffs in this division does not mean we are close. But winning a game, like beating Dallas in the first round, that could be something. It would show that the team has improved through the season, showing the coaching staff competent and able to get the young players progressing nicely.

Lose one more game, and it’s likely over. Fail to make the playoffs at a minimum, will be a deathblow to the staff.

As for Baker, well, if we lose again and fail to make playoffs, we will likely move on from him. At best, in that scenario, perhaps we keep him as a bridge (as long as it is cheap) while we draft QB1. Trask will remain a backup or perhaps Trask is the bridge if we don’t keep Baker.

There will be a lot of changes next season. Cap issues still linger, and we can’t pay everyone. I think we keep ME13 and LD54. I think we cut one of CD24 or JD35 – looking like JD35. I think we let LD45 walk. Shaq is either renegotiated or cut.

  97. BA’s Red Pen Says:

If you think Trask is the answer, I’m not sure you know the question.

  98. MegaFailure Says:

    START TRASK ALREADY!

  99. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Joe is stirring the pot. Mayfield always developed Baker Boys who think he’s top 5 QB material and Baker Haters who think he’s bottom 5. Neither is correct, he is NFL average. To answer the question in the article, absolutely not. Not without a dependable running game like every playoff caliber team sports.

  100. David Says:

Baker proved that he can’t even play against bad teams anymore. He is finished in NFL.
Forth picks in a row with 5 turnovers in the last four games has destroyed Bucs chances to win the division. 48% completions. LOL

  101. WyomingJoe Says:

BelleGradeBuc: You’re continuing to embarrass yourself. The Browns mortgaged their future when they signed Deshaun Watson and they’re finding out it was a colossal mistake; one that will take years to recover from. Btw, Watson was averaging 187 yards per game since coming to Cleveland. And, how are the Panthers doing since getting rid of Baker? Don’t make me laugh!

  102. WyomingJoe Says:

David: Go back to sleep because the Cult of Kyle has an early meeting tomorrow.

  103. WyomingJoe Says:

David: You’re so funny. Do you do standup comedy? Just to let you know, there’s an early meeting of the Cult of Kyle tomorrow morning. I won’t be there.

  104. WyomingJoe Says:

Sorry I repeated myself, but my comments were being moderated, lol.

  105. maccafan Says:

Baker has completed 63.6% of his passes this year after having his worst game of the year. That is better than his career average which is 61.7%. He has thrown 18 TD passes and has 8 INT. There are 12 QB’s this year that have thrown more INT’s than Baker and some of them are guys named Allen, Mahomes and Stafford. Baker is getting paid basically nothing, even guys like Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson on rookie contracts make more this year than Baker. Let me wrap it up and say after 12 games, the Bucs are 5-7 and only one game out of division lead. Granted the division sucks but they are still in it. If Bucs defense could have kept the Texans out of the endzone with 45 seconds left in the game, they would be 6-6.

  106. Bosch Says:

If you were to rank all Bucs QBs , I’ve got him at fourth best. As follows:

    Brady (of course)
    Johnson ( the first championship)
Garcia (made a really poor offense only slightly below average)
    Mayfield

Below that pick ‘em. Who is better than Mayfield? Young? Not while he was with the Bucs? DeBerg? Close maybe. King? Good dude, but Nah. Dilfer and Williams had moments in the sun after leaving the Bucs but body of work was pedestrian. Testaverde played at a respectable level for the Jets, not unlike Mayfield this year. Jamie’s? A great talent wasted on a head case with “ house of cards character.” I could go on, but it gets absurd after this.

Mayfield is good enough to start in the NFL, but will never be great. But as Bucs QBs go he is better than most. So ease up Bucs fans, and put this in perspective.

Can he save the season? If that means saving the staff then I hope not. But my objective answer is he can but it is not likely.

One other thing. If you were ask the same question of his teammates their collective answer would a resounding YES. And that IMHO, is his greatest intangible.

  107. Don'tBmad Says:

Let’s be absorbed honest…..Buc’s without Baker Mayfield are 1-11 AT BEST…no matter what Kyle Trask clowns say. Trask was already there and couldn’t beat out Baker so let’s face facts. Tampa is average with Baker and without, last place and making the mistake os drafting Caleb Williams

  108. Rod Munch Says:

He had a 25.2 modern QB r rating – for whatever reason you can’t say the standerly used abbreviation here or it gets censored.

For those that don’t know, the modern rating is actually useful as it accounts for things like down and distance, and game situations.

50 is considered average. Baker, in the past two season, has been the worst QB in the NFL, and last year, was by far the worst QB in football in terms of that modern QB rating, at 26.3 – and today he was worse than that.

His QB rating per game has declined now for 5 weeks in a row – which seems to be a trend.

Anywho, it’s all on him now. He’s got every chance in the world to prove he’s not the loser he’s been labeled as.

Go out and win and maybe you’ll earn some fans.

That and the fact He is one win away from breaking your prediction (although you krep trying to modify so as to claim being right) making you wrong about everything

  112. Tony Marks Says:

    BelleGladeBuc Says:

Total rubbish. They begged him to stay but he said no and demanded a trade.

Anyone can Google “Baker Mayfield: Cleveland Browns quarterback requests trade .” and it comes right up

    Better luck next time.

  113. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Tony Marks

So the Browns didn’t get rid of Baker, the Browns didn’t replace Baker with Watson, Watson didn’t sit out a season after the Browns got rid of Baker and the Browns weren’t happy about it?

    All of the above happened.

    Facts aren’t your friend.

  114. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Tony

The NFC South is a bad division in the NFL.

The Bucs are a losing team with a 5-7 record in a bad division.

Baker is the quarterback and captain of this team.

    This is not good enough.

Stop telling us that this level of production is acceptable.

  115. Falconrap Says:

Oh Tony, no, I’m not 10 years old. I’m older than the Bucs. Been watching pretty much since the start. I just see someone worshiping the ground Baker walks on, like WyomingJoe does, and can’t help but think it’s his wife incognito. He’s actually worse than you, and, quite frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s just an Oklahoma fan and not really a Bucs fan per se. Regardless, you and him both have an unnatural belief in Baker. It’s ridiculous. Game in and game out he fails to make the plays that are there. If he said we should be scoring 30 points a game, and that’s true. Receivers are open on just about every pass play. How much more mediocrity do you need to see from him to give it up? I was willing to give him a few starts, but was pretty sure we’d be in this boat based on his history, and here we are.

  116. Falconrap Says:

Should be Even he said we should score 30 points a game, not If.

  117. danang Says:

WyomingJoe Says: “Tampa has seen Trask play for three seasons.”

  118. CHRISTOS Says:

    No just no.
Even if we win the Division (and that does not say mauch) this team is not good. We are not playing good and consistent football. We can barely beat teams like Chicago and Carolina. Yes if we somehow win the division we ll get a playoff game. We are not competitive against good teams.
So what, this team is not good. If we continue this road we re goin to be a mediocre team again. We need changes and a rebuild.
    Go Bucs

  119. Alanbucsfan Says:

Build the rest of the team 1st, then go get a FA QB- just like they did the for the 2 SB teams.

  120. tbc 1 Says:

Lets get to all these haters-how many of you stuck it out in the pouring rain-watched the replay great line-Trask is and was a mistake deal with it if he isnt why are so many here calling to draft a qb. We do not need much for the draft except-oline-dline-Corner backs-pass rushers-line backers-running back yeah not much just go draft a Jamis Winston. We have a quarter back his name is Baker Mayfield build around him.

  121. JD Still Says:

“ Can Baker Mayfield save the season and the staff?”, Did the Iceberg save the Titanic?, Did the Indians save Custer? Before any “saving” can be done, what the problem is must be acknowledged.

  122. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    You get what you deserve.

And for the fake QB competition and giving Baker the job Bowles deserves to be fired.

  123. JD12 Says:

If you lose on Sunday then I am fine going to Trask because the season is over. Give him 4-four games so that fans and the front office can give him a final grade.

I just would be curious to get folks opinion on what the QB plan is for 2024 because benching Baker tells him he isn’t coming back. I don’t think Trask is very good so I see us looking at two QB roster spots to fill.

  124. Conner50 Says:

The people that comment on these posts are comical. “Cult of trask people” must be real crazy to just want your team to be more successful on offense and to see what your team has in a 2rd pick. Bizzare. Mayfield isn’t quite the problem but he’s not the solution. These so called fans are a joke, if your truly a Buc fan you would want your qb no matter who have success, and if not improving than to see a spark or something new.

I see you are a person who believes a quarterback who is sub .500 with a losing record is a good thing.

I bet you think Mike Glennon was great.

He was a losing quarterback for the Bucs with a 4-9 record, 2,608 yards, 19 TD’s, 9 INT’s one season.

Baker’s numbers this year are eerily similar to Mike Glendon’s.

Baker is a losing quarterback for the Bucs with a 5-7 record, 2,790 yards, 18 TD’s, 8 INT’s so far this season.

    Mike Glennon = Baker Mayfield

Everybody with common sense thinks losing quarterback play is unacceptable, especially in the worst division in football.

Never saw TB12 or Big Ben struggling with bad weather. Guess some quarterbacks can and some can’t.

Let’s see you comment on those things.

  133. Mark hardt Says:

Baker is not a methodical Qb that Canales wants. He is a high strikeout and Home run guy. Let him throw downfield for long touchdowns like he did to Evans.

  134. BakerBucs Says:

the bad weather u keep comparing baker & Brady to is stupid the bad weather in NE was not rain it’s the cold & it wasn’t just rain yesterday it was terenntial downpours as far as the score yesterday they cud have had more points but took the win instead plz don’t act like the Panthers r not professionals every team is hIgh paid pros & didn’t they beat the Texans so every win counts & the falcons were lucky they won the the 1st meeting.we will see next week

  135. BakerBucs Says:

as far as all u jackasses saying baker has played crappy all year r morons or u really r not watching the game cause he has kept us in the mix all season as far as I’m concerned we shud really be 7&5 not 5&7 the Lord’s were not with us in a minimum of 2 games so cheer these guys on they can use the positive support

and? Did the browns think they were making an upgrade to a top two QB in the league? Sure did and the contract amount proves it. Now how does that translate to just wanting to get rid of Baker?

When you get a new quarterback and trade the old quarterback to another team you have gotten rid of the old quarterback.

The action of trading Baker and trading for Watson proves that they got rid of Baker after he led them to two consecutive losing seasons. That’s just a fact.

You really love Baker’s Mike Glennon like quarterback play.

  139. Tony Marks Says:

    BelleGladeBuc Says:

I see you are a person who believes a quarterback who is sub .500 with a losing record is a good thing.

    ——————

Thats gibberish a sub .500 is a losing record so theres no such thig as a sub .500 record without a losing record. Thats stupid writing.

“I bet you think Mike Glennon was great.”

who the junk cars about Mike Glennon? FACT baker mayfield has ranked top half of the league around top 14 for most of the season. I don’t think that – thats fact.

“He was a losing quarterback for the Bucs with a 4-9 record, 2,608 yards, 19 TD’s, 9 INT’s one season.”

NO one in the NFL cares about losing records with five games to go if the team then goes above .500 by the end of the season OR wins the division. Call me when the season is over and then you can talk stats. You weren’t cheering for Baker when the record was winning so cut the lying that you lived by that metric.

    meanwhile

19 touchdowns is good enough for about top 13 in the league
2,608 yards is good for around top 13

Thanks for the stats. its not often that someone buys the gun , points it at their feet and pulls the trigger themselves as you have done

    “TB12”

  140. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @BakerBucs

The NFC South is the worst division in football.

Secondly, maybe you didn’t know, but it rains and sleets a lot in Pittsburgh and New England where Big Ben and TB12 played. Neither TB12, Big Ben, their fans or Mike Tomlin or Bill Bellicheck ever complained about it.

Thirdly, Baker Mayfield’s quarterback play is the equivalent of Mike Glennon’s.

I don’t want either as my starting quarterback. Backup yes; starter no.

  141. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Tony

Thank you for defending Mike Glennon’s level of quarterback play. Nobody but you thinks he should have been a starting quarterback in the league. When you become a Pom Pom waver for Mike Glennon’s quarterback play you are in serious need of reevaluation. It also tells true Bucs fans that you’re not a Buc’s fan.

  142. Student of the Game Says:

Just curious, but do any of you Baker haters remember what last year was like for TB with the GOAT at QB? The current team is mostly unchanged. Yet, you expect better results from what you call a below average QB.

And yes, I am an OU fan. Yes I am only here because Mayfield plays here. I am positive he is a better quarterback than any of the posters on this site. Low football IQ here is disappointing.

  143. maccafan Says:

    @BelleGladeBuc

Get your facts straight, the last two years Baker was with the Browns were not consecutive losing years. Browns were 11-5 in 2020 and 8-9 in 2021.

Baker is a losing QB with 5-7 record this year according to you. Guess it was Bakers fault that after he put the Bucs in the lead over Texans with TD pass the defense could not keep Texans out of the endzone with 45 seconds left.

You do remember Baker played for Cleveland for 4 years in worse weather than yesterday and did just fine. Faced tough weather in road games against teams like the Bengals and Ravens those years also.

  144. maccafan Says:

    @Student of the Game

Yep, the Baker haters are really something else. Loss to Texans was all on the defense, can’t let team march down the field (75 yards) with 45 seconds left. Look at replay of the “Hail Mary” pass against Buffalo which could have won the game if Godwin turns around in time to make a catch. My goodness the pass almost hit Godwin.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKM4csj4tNg

As I said in another post, Buccaneers are paying Mayfield next to nothing, backup QB’s are making more than him. Baker is an average QB, what did these posters expect.

  145. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @maccafan

    I got my facts straight.

Baker’s last two seasons with the Browns were both losing seasons.

Wins are most certainly a quarterback stat.

  149. Conner50 Says:

  150. OklahomaAl Says:

So much of the hate is so uninformed as to be comical.

During the preseason, the most-common complaint was that Baker would be a turnover machine. HE HASN’T BEEN. He has fewer interceptions than Tagovailoa, Allen, Mahomes, and Hurt, among others.

He has more touchdowns than Stafford, Burrow, Jackson, and Lawrence, among others.

For at most $8 million, he’s having the same kind of season as Burrow at $55 million.

12 of the Bucs’ 28 runs went for 2 yards or less. That’s 43%.

Carolina has the #4 pass defense in the league, yet Baker had more yards than their average, in the rain.

Even the most delusional never-Baker’ers out there can see that we SHOULD be 6 and 6, and could very easily been 7 and 5. That would lead the division.

And for all of you who whine “we barely beat a bad team”…ummm…isn’t that still a win? If there are no style points and there’s no such thing as a moral victory when we hang with a good team, then why are you acting like there’s a such thing as a moral loss when we win?

It really amazes me that so many people can be such fans of such a mediocre QB that they’d come on here and defend him like this. Ya’ll just a bunch of Baker nut sack huggers in my opinion. Only thing that explains it. And, as BelleGlade said, he’s basically on par with Mike Glennon.

What are you a Florida state fan or Georgia fan? Hate the gators or something? Pretty sure a guy who gets picked in the second round don’t suck lol. Pretty sure he outperformed all the other qb’s in camp as well. Don’t call yourself a Buc fan when you bash one of our qb’s. Go root for the saints you’d fit right in with there crap shoot fan base

Everyone wants to blame Baker… no one can see that this is the worse O Line in the league. The coaching is terrible too. But hey let’s blame Mayfield. The O Line is the reason there no run game… come on people follow the evidence.

Kudos to Wyoming Joe, Captain Tim, Tony Marks, a d especially Oklahoma AL! They make sense. Common sense is truly lacking in so many remarks.

  160. Glass used to be Half Full Guy Says:

Mayfield has had his entire, short career growth stunted by playing on garbage teams with garbage coaches in garbage organizations. His best long-term career move would have been to try to stay in LA as a backup just to be able to learn under a very good coach.

Like all high draft picks, he went to a lousy team. The lousiest. Cleveland won 3 games in 2015, 1 game in 2016 and 0 games in 2017. 4 wins in 3 years. Baker’s first season they won 7 games. By his 3rd season they won 11 games. The talent is there.

I get that he’s always been a starter and being relegated to backup is painful, but in the long run, it could have led to better skills. Coming here, a so-so organization (face it guys, we’ve done way more losing than winning, 2 SBs not withstanding) with a defensive-minded HC and a rookie OC was probably not the best move but it got him playing time.

If I were him, I’d spend whatever it takes this off-season to get some one on one time with Manning or Brady. Learn how to process, study, prepare. Work on mechanics, etc. Who would be better to show him the way? Brady or rah-rah Canales? No contest.

Lmao I’ve been fine with baker all season and anyone can go back and see the comments. He’s ok like I’ve said but not franchise material, journeyman material. And I don’t have the time nor energy to make that many usernames lol you must be a 14 year old Oklahoma fan stuck in the past when they were only above average
