Baker Mayfield Says GodwinGate Was No Consideration

December 10th, 2023

Joe served the question up to Baker Mayfield after today’s thrilling Bucs win in the loudass Falcons’ dome.

Did the starting quarterback feel extra pressure to send balls Chris Godwin’s way following GodwinGate last week, the Wednesday social media blowup by Godwin’s wife, who was upset by how coaches talked about her husband. Godwin didn’t catch a pass last Sunday.

Today, Godwin led the Bucs with 10 targets. He had just five catches but they included a monster 3rd-and-10 catch late in the fourth quarter on the game-winning drive. Godwin also had a drop.

“No,” Mayfield replied, “As always we have stuff involved for Chris in the game plan. Early on in the game they were only keyed in on Mike [Evans], so there was some man coverage stuff we were able to get Chris open on. Just take advantage of that. I mean, Chris and Mike are our two best receivers, so whenever you get the ball to them you try to.”

Before that big catch, Godwin had only 4 receptions for 21 yards. It was a bad day, until it wasn’t.

Godwin reflected more after the game on how he appreciates how his teammates recognize him for working incredibly hard and being a team-first guy. Godwin says he’s all about winning, and that includes wanting the team to use him however he can help.

It seems GodwinGate is over. But Joe sure hopes Mike Evans’ wife doesn’t look at his 1 catch today for 8 yards and continue the trend.

Joe’s joking, of course. But Evans had 6 targets and 1 short catch and it just wasn’t his day.

Evans, however, was about an eighth of a second from a stunning touchdown grab. The problem was he got his right hand down out of bounds a millisecond before his second foot touched in-bounds.

How would you expect baker to respond?

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

    Lies but ok.

  3. Boss Says:

This will be just like last year. Limp into the playoffs because our division is sooooo bad…and then one and done.

Worst possible outcome if it saves toilet bowl.

Horrible team to watch. They barely skimp by once in a while….with all this talent they should dominate.

  4. Mark hardt Says:

Baker seems to always get hit by disgruntled Dad,s (OBJ) or wives. Just stay out of it. Baker had a last minute drive to get the lead but he also did against Texans and Falcons game 1. Defense barely stopped the Falcons this time. Baker is doing a great job on a bad team. The argument whether to keep him or not is a moot point. Bucs will be outbid anyways.

Of course it played a role they forced it to Godwin all day. Hopefully his wife saw he just can’t get open in NFL anymore and she stays out of the team. Lot of cap space will be open this year. I look for Bucs to release Godwin after this nonsense. Her rant probably cost him millions. Nobody is going sign him for what he makes here because he just can’t get open anymore. I love Godwin think he was incredible player sadly it’s probably because of his knee injury he lost a step. However to do that during a week our entire town celebrated Evans was clueless and selfish. Time to cut ties with the toxicity

If Mike doesn’t put his hand out….falls flat on his face….breaks his neck….we have a TD.

Sooner or later, this stupid post situation has to be left behind…..
We have a chance to get into playoffs, so no distractions.

  11. Buddha Says:

Baker will want to stay in Tampa. But he will only stay if Canales stays. He is tired of having a different offensive coordinator every year. He has 20 touchdown passes and only eight interceptions. He is playing with a bad ankle injury. In case you haven’t noticed, scoring is way down around the whole league–except in Miami and Dallas and neither of those teams have beaten a team with a winning record. If the Buccaneers beat Green Bay and New Orleans, Bowles likely will be back.

  12. Eric Says:

most bucs teams would have folded once Atlanta took the lead.

  16. Zzbucs Says:

I like Baker a lot, but he is not the answer…..
If we mamage to get into playoffs, and we have a médium high pick is his only chance to be a Buc, if not I can’t see that happening.

  17. WyomingJoe Says:

    Bucs107: You are absolutely correct.

  18. Tbbucs3 Says:

The Lovie Smith defense is a FAR bigger issue than Mayfield.

Reminder Drake London went 10 for 172 with Desmond Freaking Ridder throwing the ball. Not even sure Ridder had a WR do that while in college playing against Florida International.

  23. lanshark Says:

Just finished watching the All-22 of last week’s game against the Panthers. Was concentrating on the Offense, specifically the passing game. Looking for 3 things:

    a) how much time does Baker have to throw?

    b) Who was the primary read?

    c) Is Baker doing his progressions?

    Answers:

    a) <2.75 seconds on average. A few play-action plays got over 4 seconds, but we only ran about 4 of those.

    b) Baker threw to the first read nearly 90% of the time.

    c) No – he simply does not have time.

Couple notes: Godwin was first read on only 3 plays. He flat-out dropped the first one, caught the 2nd, and ran a TERRIBLE 'rounded out' pattern on the third – no separation and he got clobbered. So, not throwing to CG last week was a scheme/coach issue, though he didn't do much to make the coaches change their minds.

  24. Bucsmarley Says:

Don’t get your hopes up. Baker was garbage again. I was at the game and saw it first hand. Cant throw a deep ball if his life depended on it. Almost embarrassing. Dink and dunk. The entire game was hoping for Trask or wolford. Baker is not the answer. Average average

Wyoming Joe I was at the game it was awful. He is just an average qb who flashes once a game. Don’t understand your love for him but at least you support our team. Btw look at his stats piss poor

  25. adam from ny Says:

at the very last minute baker decided to start cookin’ in the pot !

  26. WyomingJoe Says:

David Big Butts Fan: Sounds like you know too much about Strap Clubs, lol.

  27. Bucsmarley Says:

A win is a win. Just wondering how many more wins we would have with a competent coach and a qb that can throw the ball farther than 10 yards. Was at the game and it was not pretty. Like I’ve stated in a previous post was really hoping to see Trask or wolford just to see a long pass lol. Todd’s gotta go and mayfield can stay only as a backup. ( no Wyoming Joe I’m not saying Trask is the guy, but you’ll never know if you don’t give him a shot). We all have seen what baker is a quality backup

  28. Bucsmarley Says:

Joe why the moderation on post. Nothing on it is offensive or not true

  29. Bucsmarley Says:

    WTH Joe.

  30. unbelievable Says:

@WyomingJoe – no Baker hater, he is what he is: inconsistent and limited.

Make some amazing throws, but misses way too many as well. He averages like 200 yards a game and 1-2 TDs. That just isn’t enough to win in this league, especially with a soft arse defense.

  31. sasquatch Says:

Imagine having an offense that figured out how to get the ball to both its top receivers! Ya mean a real NFL offense? No way!

  32. Bucsmarley Says:

What’s up Joe. Why are you removing my posts. Seriously

  33. Bucsmarley Says:

    Go Bucs 🤪

  34. Bucsmarley Says:

Even moderating a go Bucs post. Seriously
    Did I offend you

  35. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

I finally figured out the problem with Dave Canales offense. He lets other teams take away a key player like Mikee Evans by double/triple teaming them & just accepts that instead of going in attack mode and letting the other team stop a Mii\ke Evans. He also forces the running game when then is no running game,
Whether he does this because Todd Bowles instructs him to I don’t know but you got to play to win not keep the score manageable.

I don’t see the Bucs defense take out a star offensive player on the other team and the other teams offense then doesn’t go to them.

  36. Joehatesme Says:

    What a fantastic game

  37. Joehatesme Says:

Was at the game. Ugly to watch. A win is a win. Not sure what to expect with a incompetent coach and a average qb

“Baker will want to stay in Tampa. But he will only stay if Canales stays.”

I agree with your observation as usual. I would suggest it’ll get a little more complicated. If Bowles is gone does that mean Canales is automatically gone?
    Probably.

But even if Bowles and Canales stay will Baker play for less money than he can earn elsewhere. The “League” is not in agreement with all the Baker hate on this site. He won’t be playing anywhere for 4 million bucks next year. The Bucs are so cap strapped if the Bucs go on a run and make the playoffs they probably will not be able to afford Baker.

  39. Rod Munch Says:

    Mike Evans with 1 catch.

Another pitiful effort by Mayfield who got bailed out by the defense and Rachaad White.

  40. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Rod Munch everyone knows you are infatuated with little Kyle and your butt hurts tremendously that he’s not playing but…
He’s never going to start, ever.

  41. orlbucfan Says:

This is crap. The wives post after all the games, now suddenly this is a big deal? The problem is Canales and his play calling. I get trying to get the run game going. Canales sorta woke up a few games ago, and realized White could catch the FB. Duh. So could TE Otton, HOFamer ME13, and Ungodly CG14. So, common sense says you creatively mix up the calls. Guess it took a while for Canales to get the cosmic memo. Hopefully, he doesn’t lose the memo cos we have Green Bay in WI outside next Sunday. Bucs won’t be favored in that one.

  42. Bucsmarley Says:

    Not fun to see

  43. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Mayfield is so clutch. He is able to overcome. Great performance and we ate a W!

  44. Jack Clark Says:

Baker Mayfield is a one read quarterback, only difference is this game Godwin was his first read. That’s why he threw to Godwin 11 times and Mike Evans only 6 times. This just proves that Baker Mayfield is the one deciding who the ball gets thrown to, not Todd Bowles or Dave Canales. Mariah Godwin owes Todd Bowles an apology

  45. Mediocre Mayfield Says:

Mayfield sucks, so does canales and Bowles

    ——————-
I know very little about BM. I know he’s a veteran QB but he’s also short in height. If he can’t quickly change mental calls and throw to the open receivers, there’s a problem. Canales’ job is to solve it. We’ll know next week.

  47. Drew Says:

Baker Mayfield had his back against the wall with everyone wanting to start his backup next week, when we lose lol. Which that’s funny asf!! Then the season was on the line with 3 to go and he put a touchdown game winning drive together! Story over so let’s make this the last post huh!

  48. Oneilbuc Says:

Stepetebuc. No other team wanted Baker Mayfield but the bucs and some of our losers fans who don’t know nothing about football. You guys loved average lol 😂😂. We ain’t winning nothing with Baker Mayfield at quarterback and most of the fan base knows it but guys like you. Guys like you only look at the name on the back of jersey. Ain’t no team giving him a contract but this loser franchise and fan base. Lol 🤣🤣

  49. Usfbuc Says:

Not sure we get outbid for a Mayfield if the Bucs wants to keep him.

    Teams who need a QB

    Pats (drafting a QB)
    Commanders (drafting a QB)
Raiders (currently 8th in the draft so they might be able to land a QB in the draft)
    Vikings (Vikings could resign Cousins)
Steelers (not in a position to draft a QB)
Bucs (not in a position to draft a QB)

Teams who might go after a QB

Cardinals (could draft a QB but stuck with Kyler so probably not)
Packers (not in a position to draft a QB)
Bears (if they get a new QB they will draft them)

So of the teams who need/want a new QB none of them are likely to sign Mayfield because they will either draft a QB or Mayfield isn’t clearly better than what they have now.

  50. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Why are you not posting my comments

  51. Shane Callahan Says:

Baker’s arms are bigger than most QBs, you moron, Soprano. (They might not be bigger than mine, but I guarantee his and mine are bigger than yours. I think that’s the weakest post I’ve ever seen on this site.

  52. 1#bucsfan Says:

So what we can’t distribute the ball ? We can only use 1 WR at a time ? Baker missed ME13 multiple times. Bad passes. He threw a bad one to CG14 there were several other times ME13 or CG14 were open but BM6 either threw it to late or didn’t seem them. I love that BM6 is a gamer and he does everything he can to win but man he’s just not consistently good. He threw into triple coverage instead of an open check down to RW1 like come on bro. Deff think it’s time to see what we got in trask to see if he can be the guy next year. I highly doubt BM6 comes back

No we don’t love average, we love affordability! 4 million is a steal!! He won’t be that cheap next season. Do you guys ever read what the rest of the league is thinking?

NOBODY on this team or playing QB anywhere in the NFL right now has larger stones than Mayfield.

Mayfield reminds me of Jeff Garcia. Garcia was a .500 QB 58-58 over his career but when on good teams he fared well…12-4 followed by 10-6 in SF before things went south. Then he went to Cleveland where NOBODY wins…not even Belichik in five years…oh but forgot Baker..took them to the playoffs.

Garcia went 1-4 with a rotten Lions team before resurrecting his career with a brief stint in Philly..5-1. Garcia was 14-10 in his two years with the Bucs.

Baker is NOT the problem. He had half the time Ridder had to set up in the pocket. He’s been playing on a bum ankle with a porous OL… Targets failing to get open…drops by ME and CG…ME of course redeemed himself bigtime…hopefully CG will find his groove. Baker has made mistakes just like the REST of the team.

    The problem is the HC!!!

First get a new coach. Let HIM, certainly not the emotional posters here make the call on the next QB and who he wants. Another draft and UDFA crop like this year’s, dump a ton of salary and the Bucs are on their way.

If they get deep into the playoffs and believe Baker cannot get over the hump, find a new QB. FIRST build a freaking team like Lynch did in SF which covered his HORRIBLE pick at QB trading away 3 first round draft picks for what ended up to be a 4th rounder in return.

Build the team FIRST. Baker and Trask are adequate transition QB’s!!!
    Check yo sheets.

  56. RGA Says:

Mayfield is a detriment to the Bucs offense, he’s a terrible quarterback.

  57. RGA Says:

Every time the Bucs run Mayfield out after a change of downs I cringe at thinking this guy is trying to lead this offense.

  58. RGA Says:

Todd Bowles should lose his job alone by continuing to run Mayfield out there time and again.

  59. Fishing Buc Says:

RHA, you and morons like you are why the national media and football at large see TB fan as fools.

  60. RGA Says:

An alternate Bucs site has had Mayfield on the most disappointing list again, several weeks in a row.

  61. RGA Says:

The Panthers gave up a lowly conditional draft pick to the lowly Browns for Mayfield and cut him mid season for poor performance. The Rams scooped him up off the waver wire when Stafford went down. The Rams had no interest in keeping him, the Bucs signed him. The ultimate retread and poor performing QB. He’s playing poorly for the Bucs as should have been expected.

  62. Heath Hunt Says:

The Panthers did what 75% of posters on here wanted to do last year. Lose the games, get a higher draft pick, fire the coach and draft the savior QB

  63. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Baker Mayfield won the game & he is criticized for that by some posters who I think are the same person with different screen names

  64. Craig Says:

The funniest thing is that Wyoming Joe can laud the crappy play of Baker today.

It is not that he won the game, it is that the Bucs didn’t want to lose it as badly as the Dixie Chicks wanted to.

It was almost a fluke that he actually threw a pass close enough to Godwin that it got caught. Of course, this was after Godwin threw the key block that allowed R. White to get around that corner.

The defense tried even harder than Baker to give the game away.

  65. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Why is Dave Canales letting other teams defense taking his stars like MIke Evans out of the game instead of being in attack mode? Canales lets the other teams defense limit his offense. He seems to play to keep the score close instead of to win & dictate the score. I don’t see Tampa Bays defense taking stars out of the game by double or triple teaming them as the other team gets the ball to the player anyway. The idea of forcing the unsuccessful run is one of the most insane things I’ve ever witnessed by a Coach.

  66. BigA Says:

  68. Tbbucs3 Says:

Another article, another comment section being spammed with Trask nonsense.

Does gator nation have nothing else going on? Guess so.

  69. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

To the 1 or 2 people (I think these people use different screen names) who want Kyle Trask to play over Baker Mayfield what exactly would be accomplished?
    1. You think if Kyle Trask does great that would prevent Tampa Bay from drafting a QB in the first round & on the basis of 4 games Kyle Trask deserves to start?
    2. If Kyle Trask loses then the Bucs will be out of the Playoffs but in a higher draft position to draft a QB who there is no guarantee would be better than Baker Mayfield especially with that Line & would likely be another Chase Young for the next 2 years at best.
3.Of the 5 first round QBs drafted when Baker Mayfield went #1 Josh Allen was worse than Baker his first 2 years & better afterwards, Lamar Jackson only prospered because Baltimore changed their whole offense around him which almost no NFL team has ever done, Josh Rosen is out of the NFL & Sam Darnold is a back=up. Point is, its a longshot a QB drafted by Tampa Bay in the first round will be any better then Mayfield. If the team drafted a ineman, defensive backs & signed a free agent RB, they’d have a chance to be better.

  70. Mark hardt Says:

    It is
Amazing how short term memories are. Baker has a cannon arm. Witness the almost Hail Mary against the Bills. He had a completed HM to Peoples Jones in Cleveland. For his career he has super high 50 yard plus accuracy rating. Defenses are terrified of Bakers bomb arm so they are taking it away and leaving him the underneath routes. Smart QBs take what is given.

  73. Craig Says:

The main thing about p[laying Trask is to see if he can develop into our long term QB. He might, or he might not, but we need to know before the draft rolls around again.

If he might develop into something, then the Bucs need to tie him down before he goes away and comes back to haunt us.

If he is awful, then the Bucs need to try the crapshoot of drafting a QB.

The real problem is that Baker will think enough of himself, if no competition on this team is around, that he will want huge amounts of money next season. The Bucs will still be in cap purgatory next season, so Baker will walk.

Then the Bucs will be in another depressing hole.

I have nothing against Trask and it wouldn’t matter one bit if I did. I try to get the Glazers to pay me for my opinions but security keeps escorting me out for some reason. Go figure.

  82. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Here is a rating list of QBs better than Baker Mayfield & QBs worse with a (?) representing they’re too old to acquire or too injured or they wouldn’t be better with TBay like Brock Purdy or Jared Goff in my opinion they’re playing with a better team. Baker is roughly in the middle of the group. Of the better QBs none of them could get you into the Superbowl with this years team nor net year. Neither could an early first round QB with the Offensive Line the Bucks have & the lousy running back. The bottom line is you Baker Mayfield haters would not make the Superbowl & a good chance not the Playoffs with the superior QBs. To think so is ignorance.

It’s a rare quality in a QB where it’s the end of the game, and he HAS to go the length of the field, complete passes, win the game. Like him or hate him, Baker has done just that 3 times this year. (Of course, the first Atlanta game, and the Houston game, defense let the OTHER team do the same thing) Mayfield has that quality, lots of QB’s with better stats do not

    GO BUCS

The only way to make Oneil happy is if we got “Shameless Jameis” back from the ‘Aints.

He hated on Brady. Hates on Mayfield and if Trask was starting he’d be hating on him too.

Considering how batty Winston is, it wouldn’t surprise me if he and Oneil were one and the same. Lol
