Table Set For A Big Game From Baker Mayfield

November 26th, 2023

Baker Mayfield vs. Cover-3.

Baker Mayfield isn’t a very good quarterback against man-to-man coverage. At least that is what the stats say.

Rich Hribar of Sharp Football Analysis did a deep dive on the Colts and the Bucs. In his homework, he noticed Mayfield completes just 49 percent of his passes in man coverage.

Facing Cover-3, Mayfield, per Hribar, sees his completion percentage jump to 70 percent. And Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley plays a lot of Cover-3 (50 percent of the defensive snaps), second-most in the NFL.

[The Colts] are playing man coverage on a league-low 8.0% of passing plays. They are playing Cover-3 on 50.4% of those passing plays, which is second in the league.

Mayfield has completed just 49.1% of his passes against man coverage this season (28th), so he should not run into issues in that department.

This is good to know, if Bradley sticks to his guns and does not deviate from his previous defensive patterns.

The problem with this? The Bucs have to throw to take advantage. The Bucs have conned themselves into thinking they are a power-running team despite having the league’s worst rushing attack. As a result, the Bucs will spend too many snaps in the first half pounding the ball between the tackles.

And people wonder why Joe drinks.

I haven’t seen one Colts game. I know they have a new coach, but I couldn’t pick him out of a police line up. Their rookie QB is out, I know who Manchew is. Yet these Colts have won one more game then us. This is a measuring stick for both clubs in a bad way. We know we don’t measure up to the big boys in the league, be sad if we don’t measure up to the Colts. Glazers have never fired a coach during the season. Get beat bad by the Colts? No one would blame them for firing Bowles now.

Interesting about the 49%%, I wonder if it’s HIM or our scheme, as they aren’t seperating?

To be fair the bucs should have a better record than they do and baker has been playing great minus a few throws I’m sure he wants back but it’s weird to me people say put in trask because he’s (baker)the reason why the record isn’t better…I mean if it wasn’t for some really REALLY. bad dropped passes and blatant no calls they’d easily be first still in the division and looking really strong
The defense getting shredded in 38 seconds isn’t his fault or Evans dropping a wide open td or cade as well and they still have a good chance of making the playoffs if they clean up those drops and stop with drive killing penalties in my opinion they’re a good team just need to work on that run game and blocking

Baker is known to have less than 100 yds passing in the first half. That’s his MO every week. Last week he had 80 yds passing at half time while Purdy had 160 yds. Baker starts slow and is inaccurate and I don’t see today being any different.

I’d love to see them come out and throw 12 passes in a row.

Bad O- Line bad run game.

    it is basic math.
