Chase Edmonds Talks Best Run Game, Team Effort

November 28th, 2023

Rachaad White and Chase Edmonds.

Upon Joe’s second watching of the Bucs-Colts game, the run game really did look improved. By golly, it looked like solid NFL rushing attack for much of the game.

Joe talked to No. 2 Bucs running back Chase Edmonds about it in the somber Bucs locker room. The veteran had a 4 1/2-yard run called back because the Bucs accepted a defensive penalty for five yards. Then Edmonds had a shify, 11-yard scamper on his second and final attempt.

Edmonds praised Rachaad White for taking advantage of running game, and he threw love at the offensive line for not letting beastly Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner wreck the game.

“I felt like the line definitely had their best game in the run game this year,” Edmonds said.

Joe thought Edmonds looked exceptionally sharp. Joe thought it might have been because of playing on turf, but Edmonds said it’s him getting completely healthy after an MCL (knee) issue early in the season.

He said he makes no excuses for subpar play, but he hopes he “showed the coaches I still got some juice.”

Joe is upbeat about the Bucs’ running game after their best day of the year. Hey, it’s something. White had 100 yards on 15 carries and Edmonds looked alive. Joe will take it.

As for the Bucs recovering after losing six of seven games, Edmonds said he knows the team won’t roll over and play dead.

“It’s a tough spot, but the one thing I’ll say about this team is that we’re resilient, you’re never going to have to question effort from the team; and I think that’s the first problem that usually needs to be addressed,” Edmonds said. “…So there’s never going to be an effort problem with this team. We have great locker room leaders, as well, guys like Mike [Evans], guys like Antoine [Winfield], guys like Lavonte [David].”

Edmonds said he’s experienced other players on other teams “loaf around the field,” but that won’t be the Bucs.

Lots of things will improve once Todd Bowles is gone. He was in a tough spot this year because of the salary cap. That said………… He was in the worst division in the NFL and still couldn’t dominate. /the Bucs have a few players to build a turn around on but that will never happen with Bowles in charge. Just too many mistakes. He is in way over hi head!!!

    @ Larry

I hope we get an offensive coach who can max mayfield’s production and groom a new qb behind him while improving many things. One thing is clock management. Bowles cannot manage a game clock and the defense. We had three timeouts and instead of calling one with three minutes the colts run it down then kick it. We get it 2:25ish left. We make a play then rush to get a second play off before 2 minute warning and that rushing gets a false start because guys didn’t set for a full second. The Texan game he took a timeout and saved the Texans 9-10 seconds which allowed them to score.

Clock management is a basic head coach requirement and he can’t do it.

    It wuz a Glorious Loss

Lol C’mon Joe The Colts give up 120+ yds a game rushing nothing has changed
You, c’mon. The Bucs previously have failed on the ground against other porous run defenses. –Joe

  8. Bucnjim Says:

I’m not sure I’m seeing the hustle and effort he’s referring to. Maybe on a play or two, but definitely not consistently.

  9. SB~LV Says:

It’s not that the fans have turned on the Bucs
They have turned on what they are being served

  10. Hodad Says:

So if the Bucs had the run game going why didn’t Baker fair better? Baker apologists say he doesn’t have a run game, and he gets to much pressure up the middle. He had a run game, Mauch had his best game, Baker had plenty of time to throw. Should have a good game. Instead Baker throws a pick, has a sack fumble, yet he’s not the problem? Two TD passes, two turnovers, 4 wins in 11 games. Quick resign him lol.

  11. Lt. Dan Says:

Yea the run game was better. However I was hoping that Sean Tucker would get involved. What do we have in this kid? He was a pretty good college RB and runs in the 4.3’s.

  12. Jack Clark Says:

Wow! Our running backs play so much better when they are not getting hit before they can even cross the line of scrimmage

  13. Jmarkbuc Says:

Been a fan since the beginning.

Seen some horrendous performances, from ownership all the way down.

This is the first year I don’t really care if I watch the rest of the games or not.

NFL in general isn’t much fun to watch anymore, these Bucs make it even worse.

  14. Boss Says:

I feel bad for the players having to make $hit up and sound optimistic.

less bad for the ones just collecting a check, but very bad for those whose careers have been/are being ruined by this coaching staff.

    start Trask

The problem is, it appears that only the offensives side of the ball is still giving in their all. And a small handful of defensive guys like Winfield, David, Kancey and Diaby.

Davis and Dean have been incredibly inconsistent at best this season (in addition to being woefully misused and subsequently abused).

JTS and Logan Hall are still being searched for (except for the 2x a season when a sack literally falls into their laps).

Devin White? Ryan Neal? Don’t even get me started on them…

  16. Pewter power Says:

there’s never going to be an effort problem.

Hey Edmunds when is the last time you practiced against Devin white?

Come on it’s like these guys don’t know statistics which says colts have a bad rush defense. You were supposed to be able to run the ball. One game is not a trend, it could very well be an aberration like the points put up against the Texans

    LOLOLOL SIX SACKS

Apparently we can count time on the back as QB “time to throw”.

Cue the strings and song – “he held the ball too long we are holding on to that Bong” – which on film NOWHERE materializes on four of the sacks I
    was able to review.

As usual Hodad you don’t understand NFL football. its not having the run game IN ONE GAME. Its the reputation over SEVERAL games that keeps the defensive coordinator off balance and the players cued to defend both and thus makes misdirection plays more effective.

  18. unbelievable Says:

@Tony – I disagree on some of those sacks. At least 2 of them were 100% on Baker, he had more than enough time to throw it away.

I think he’s pressing more as of late (which is understandable), and as a result has lost of some of the collected pocket presence that he had in the beginning of the year, even when scrambling.

  19. Tony Marks Says:

“You, c’mon. The Bucs previously have failed on the ground against other porous run defenses. –Joe”

Maybe Joe but Every game is a matter or individual matchups and schemes even comparing two porous defenses. Just because we ran on one doesn’t mean the run game is hereby decent or another porous defense isn’t going to show it lacking again

We’ll know if its real improvement only in time.

IF you have time marks I am open to seeing them. I Don’t have access to all 22s but will by next weekend. I reviewed four and don’t see it from those four. Maybe the two I didn’t see is what you are referring to. I don’t claim none was his fault because I don’t comment on what I haven’t seen.

The fumble for example was a disgrace to the line. As I recall it was a four line defense so no official pass rush and the pocket deflated in 2 seconds and they got to baker from behind in 3 as he was going go long

You can call that plenty of time to throw all you want but when A QB can’t even take an extra second to go long its bad oline play. Its very telling that the game in which the QB is injured and unable to bail out the oline with escapes its the same game the oline gives up 6 sacks.

Joes reporting on how good the oline is due to low sacks has always been suspect as to analysis.

  21. Cobraboy Says:

Impressive. Against arguably the worst run D in the NFL.

  22. unbelievable Says:

Don’t have timestamps, but I did record the game so maybe I’ll try to go back through it one of these nights. But the fumble was not one of the sacks I was referring to, FYI.

  23. Hodad Says:

Baker Mayfield sucks. He had one good year as a rookie, and he’s sucked everywhere he’s been including here since. His record is, what it is, loser.

  24. WyomingJoe Says:

HODAD: Actually Baker had two very good years. Don’t forget 2020 when he led the Browns to their first playoff appearance in 20+ years. And don’t dismiss 2021 when he badly injured his shoulder in game #2, gutted it out and set his career back two years. Time to give this guy a break.

  25. Zoocomics Says:

The irony is that statistically White had his best game this season and we were playing from behind most of the game. I just don’t get this team.

Not true Wyoming Joe. Hodad can’t forget 2020. Ignorance can’t forget what it never knew.

The Bucs are in a tough spot this weekend.
They’re playing against a real green rookie QB
And they’re playing at home. Thats 2 big strikes against.
I’m hearing that coaching dirge for Bowles already😬
If only his 2 way overpaid cornerbacks would ball out just one game, one time, for him, And show their appreciation,
Naw, that’s asking way to much.
Its just to easy for them to barely show up ill prepared, again, get a fat check; and simply cut and run. Atta boy!
