Ronde Barber Omits Devin White And Jamel Dean From Defensive Breakdown

October 25th, 2023

Will Devin White ride again?

Hall of Fame cornerback and Buccaneers legend Rondé Barber was asked to state what he likes about the Bucs defense this season.

Joe cracked a Sunny Key Lime from Big Storm Brewing Co. and awaited Barber’s assessment.

Joe was most intrigued by what Barber didn’t say during his trip to the Buccaneers Radio Network.

“What do I like about this [defense]? I like the way they play up front,” Barber began. “I wish we had more dropback opportunities so we could let our edge rushers eat a little bit more. Shaq [Barrett] had a great play right before the half [against the Falcons], but that’s too few and far between. But we’re stopping the run. Lavonte [David] is playing great at one of the linebackers. Antoine Winfield is probably the best safety in the league. There’s no question about it. Like, you can talk about stats, you can talk about everything else; when you put the film on, there’s one dude that’s moving fast than everybody else on the field. And that’s Antoine. And Carlton’s playing pretty well. But as a unit, the one thing that we are I guess thriving at is keeping people out of the end zone.”

Barber omitted big-money linebacker Devin White and big-money cornerback Jamel Dean from his positive assessment.

He went on to laud Tampa Bay’s red zone defense. Yeah, the goal is to keep teams out of the red zone, but as Barber said with conviction. “A red zone stop is a win for the defense” every time. He praised the Bucs defense for “taking offense” to the failures of the offense and stepping up in big moments.

If Barber assesses the successes of the Bucs defense again in a few weeks, Joe sure hopes White’s name comes up. It’s stunning to Joe how White is riding a 13-game sackless streak and suddenly seems to be more blockable than he was early in the season.

Add Ryan Neal and Joe Trying Hard Shoyinka to that ho hum list

  2. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

We cannot give enough praise to David, the man is balling out once again for us. To me we have had some significant (big time moments) for our expensive pass rush to shine and we have been let down in those moments. Praying that turns around Thursday night because the Bills will give us chances to get some sacks without bringing the house. Our secondary must shine this game and will have every opportunity to do so because Allen is going to sling it. The only men who have earned to break the bank next season and the years to come is Winfield and Wirfs.

  3. Since76 Says:

The defense is the only reason we have 3wins. The way the offense has played I’m surprised we have more than one. The offense has played well in two quarters. The defense showed up in every game. But they get tired and demoralized when the other side does little or nothing. This QB-OC duo is really not clicking. At all…….

  4. ElioT Says:

White & Dean are high profile non-factors.

  5. BucU Says:

    At all!!!

  6. Razor Ramone Says:

White was jogging when Rider ran that TD in. Dean is either getting hurt, hurt or looking lost.

  7. garro Says:

White can sack and talk and….

Joe maybe we can trade him for that RB straight up. Ya think?

    Go Bucs

  8. Rich Says:

Cmon Joe…45 has NEVER been able to shed a block!! He’s terrible at that….among other things too. He’s the most overrated player in the league….watch the game films and see for yourself! Don’t believe the uninformed no research media…watch the damn film, it doesn’t lie!!!!

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

CD should not have been mentioned.
That stoned looking mfer is barely mediocre.

  10. JerkingCircleofEpileptics Says:

White and Dean are high profile actors.

  11. teacherman777 Says:

Watch the replay of the game.

White still has a hurt groin. He’s playing injured.

He has lost both speed and power because of this injured groin.

David will be extended. And we must draft a new LB in the 1st or 2nd next year.

I am happy with getting a compensation pick for Devin White next year.

    Extend David for 1-2 years.

    Re-sign Wirfs, Winfield, and Evans.

Cut Or restructure Jensen if possible.

Let White get overpaid by someone else.

Let Trask play out his rookie deal.

And let our salary cap woes disappear after next year.

  12. Canabuc Says:

Why not get Sirvocea Denis on the field.
If White is not 100% he is a liability and good mistakes cost is last game. Allgier 53 yards reception was all on him.

  13. SufferingSince76 Says:

White will not get the contract he wants, from anyone, if he continues his current play.

  14. BFFL Says:

Hire Barber as GM. Maybe he can be like Lynch in the GM role.

  15. SB~LV Says:

    Trade DL is nigh
ALOT depends on the game tomorrow night
    the hangman is nigh

  16. Jeff Says:

Bucs need a full house cleaning, new head coach, and cut these overpriced glory hounds like small brained Devin White.

  17. Craig Says:

Ronde said right at the beginning that it was about what he liked. Obviously D. White and Jameal Dean are not something he likes, probably because they suck half the time, they flash on occasion so they get a highlight film or two, but are normally missing the mark.

A lot of that is coaching. D, White should not be trying to be a cover guy. Dean is a press corner who hasn’t figured out a zone scheme.

  18. Lakeland Steve Says:

The way White is playing he’s almost becoming a liability to the defense. Where’s the fire from him, the desire. He just seems like half the time he’s in Lala land. It’s a shame because that dude has so much talent and we have all seen what he is capable of. This will be his last year in Tampa unless he does a 180.

  19. Hodad Says:

What has Davis done that Ronde likes so Much? He got beat by Scotty Miller of all people. He made a half assed effort trying to prevent a score, instead getting lit up by a receiver. No he wasn’t blind sided either, he got punked.

  20. Duane in Sanford Says:

White is either hurt are playing not to get hurt, and neither are working out. We pay Dean, Davis, and White a bunch of money for ZERO splash plays. Shaq is working his way onto that list at his salary. Dont want to hear any bellyaching about resigning our older vets-LVD is flat out balling, and ME13 is at least a third our our offense. Bowles gets a lot of mileage out of his guys on defense, no reason we have to overpay. Regardless of the results this season, I see salary cuts on the defensive side of the ball next season.

  21. Don’t make a scene 35 Says:

Is this the same Rhonda Barber that thought MJ Stewart was going to be great cornerback??

  22. Don’t make a scene 35 Says:

    Rhonde

  23. ChiBuc Says:

To be fair, Dean was the leading tackler in the ATL game and much of it came from run support. He doubled White’s number of tackles vs a RB

  24. Proudbucsfan Says:

I do believe Devin White is playing hurt and the Bucs are going to get busted for not reporting it. Just a matter of time.

  25. SlyPirate Says:

    >If we have a top 10 pick, it’ll be QB in R1. Good LB are available R2-4.

I am happy with getting a compensation pick for Devin White next year.
    >Absolutely

    Extend David for 1-2 years.
    >Agreed. He’s the 2nd best defender on the team. 1 year contract is likely.

    Re-sign Wirfs, Winfield, and Evans.
    >Wirfs-Yes, Win-Yes, Evans-Not at $25-28/yr. I could see the Bucs drafting a WR in R2.

Cut Or restructure Jensen if possible.
    >Cut. He’s done. Too bad.

Let White get overpaid by someone else.
    >He won’t get the bag but he can go. He’s a liability.

Let Trask play out his rookie deal.
    >It would be a mistake to not see Trask play as soon as the Bucs know Baker isn’t the answer. At least 5-6 games. If he’s legit, that changes the offseason in a big way.

And let our salary cap woes disappear after next year.
    >1000% Agreed.

  26. Defense Rules Says:

Craig … ‘A lot of that is coaching. D, White should not be trying to be a cover guy. Dean is a press corner who hasn’t figured out a zone scheme.’

This is the FIFTH year Bowles has coached White & the FOURTH year he’s coached Dean. We’ve seen them both play awesome and seen them both play like high schoolers.

Bowles defensive schemes are apparently quite complex & he seemingly uses a lot of disguise. There’s nothing wrong with using both zone & man; these guys are veterans and should be able to do both. And no defense has the luxury of allowing their MLB to just blitz or just play the run. Pass coverage in the short middle is part of what they get paid for.

Like several others, I’m convinced that White is playing hurt (hamstring/groin probably still affecting his play). Also convinced that Dean’s playing hurt too, and thus the cushion (he doesn’t seem to be nearly as fast or as quick as I’ve seen him in the past). Lack of experienced depth is the price we paid this year (no Kevin Minters to fill in?). May sound crazy, but I keep wondering if Cam Gill has ever been tried at MLB. At 6’3″ & 240 lbs he’s got the size to be a MLB, and is used to falling into coverage as an OLB. Of course, the way he gets injured he might only last 1 game. Minor detail.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Ronde doesn’t do hit pieces, but I’m sure he could spend a couple of hours showing you all the missed coverages and bad angles by that complete POS Ryan Neal, who cost the Bucs the game on Sunday.

There is no reason that if the Bucs insist on playing a zone, that Neal should be playing. He’s giving up huge play after huge play all year long. He’s terrible.

  28. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Devin White is just Kwon Alexander on steroids. He’s not worth the giant contract he wants.

Devin White is just Kwon Alexander on steroids.

    ————-

White has been an ALL-PRO, while Kwon was a Pro-Bowler.

It’s remarkable how stupid some of the takes are around here, like saying Kwon’s name is an insult. It’s incredibly dumb.

  30. Ben Harvey Says:

Would like to see Dennis play a few snaps on defense. I think White is done. The Bucs cannot motivate this guy for whatever reason. Doesnt matter if it is criticism or showing that they want him to go out an earn his big pay day this year, he hasn’t shown it. White is a glorified Howard 2.0. All the physical traits, but 💩 for brains.

  31. Nathan Says:

    I am not surprised..
White has been an average Linebacker so far this season and it show that he wants to be elsewhere. Bowles and Licht have been doing everything they can to give White the contract that White wants and just doesn’t want to earn it. Re-sign David again and let White walk.

Wirfs and Winfield are earning their next contract with their play on the field!
