Todd Bowles Thinks Jamel Dean Can Play Better

September 24th, 2023

“I’ll do better, Coach.”

In the Bucs’ first game, once they figured out how to slow down Vikings stud receiver Justin Jefferson, the defense locked down Minnesota’s offense.

Last week the Bucs held Chicago runaround quarterback Justin Fields to just 211 yards passing. Problem was, 83 of those yards came targeting Bucs corner Jamel Dean. And that was before he left the game with an injury.

Each time (four attempts) Fields targeted a receiver covered by Dean, the pass was successful.

Several Bucs fans noticed and lashed out in the comments on this here website.

Last week Bucs coach Todd Bowles remarked how he wanted Dean to play more like he did against the Vikings than the Bears.

“Consistency would be the main thing,” Bowles said. “I thought the first game he played outstanding.

“I thought [after] last week we’ve got to work on some things that he should be able to clean up this weekend.”

The way the Bucs like to shut down the run first and foremost, there is a good chance that if the Eagles have to put the ball in the air, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will test Dean as a result of last week’s results.

I think Dean NEEDS to play better, and HOPEFULLY he can.

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

Dean wasn’t focused and played very poorly. Hope it’s not a got paid and the play poorly situation aka Swaggy Baker.

  3. NE Fan Says:

Enlighten us Todd, where you been the last 3 years? Your entire secondary less Winfield can play better. Too bad you didn’t have a guy that plays for the Jets, I believe his name is Whitehead. He’s pretty darn good.

NE Fan – ever heard of a salary cap?

Dean got paid, now he is letting up.

  7. FrontFour Says:

NE Fan, go back to New England or just go away.

  8. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Jamel Dean got paid this offseason with a brand new contract. How many players do we see slack off after they get their big payday? Hopefully Dean can enjoy his money and prove that he was worth every penny.

  9. NE Fan Says:

The only player that consistently performed after he was paid is Godwin. Front Four, don’t bother me I am watching the Pat’s beat up on the Jets.

From an observer’s eye it appeared Dean was tired of getting beat so he tapped out via “injury”. I’ve seen him do that throughout his young career. Hopefully, he’ll mature and make adjustments and recover from mistakes in game.

    Everybody calm down

I said last week that it was perhaps Deans worst game of his career, and I stand by that, especially given the experience he has now.

Time to step it up Jamel. Against a good QB, he would have been burnt alive.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

An example: Dean was at Bucs rookie minicamp sitting on the patio watching practice just about each day. Why? He had finished his daily workout at One Buc Palace and just hung out to watch practice.

The only thing Swaggy Baker worked out with in the offseason was a fork and knife.

    So do I.

  15. garro Says:

Consistent is right coach. We have to make Hurts beat us with his arm. To do that Dean needs to be on it.

    Go Bucs!

  16. BillyBucco Says:

Dean is capable and at least we didn’t lose off the back of a poor performance.
He was nearly top 10 out of 100 free agents on the list, so literally EVERYONE knows what he is capable of.
I’m sure he corrects it, and might just be the unsung hero this week.

i think one of jason litch biggest improvements was going from undersized Hargraves in the first round, and learning from that mistake.

Davis and Dean have been solid for the Bucs and they are big corners that dont get pushed around. Physical.

Great draft pick here in Dean.

Litch has really hit on draft picks on defense

Winfield, D White, Vea, C Davis, Dean

Logan Hall and JTS are coming on strong this year and hopefully they continue to show why they were drafted to be Bucs!

Lets Go! its a Bucs LIFE
