Ian Beckles Loved How The Bucs Defense Played With Passion

September 16th, 2023

Ian Beckles and Ali Marpet.

Former Bucs offensive lineman and local sports radio personality Ian Beckles is in the football swing of things.

So Beckles took to his podcast “In the Trenches” to riff about the Bucs, specifically their Week 1 win at Minnesota.

* Winning at Minnesota wasn’t easy. “Bad teams don’t win on the road a lot, I’m just telling you, against good football teams.” Beckles added that pound for pound, the Vikings likely are better than the Bucs skill-wise.

* Loved the passion on defense. “What I did see [Sunday] was guys fighting for their coach, or fighting in general. That was a different looking defense.”

(Beckles said he was with former Bucs players who remarked on the defense, “Well, that looks different, doesn’t it?”)

* The Bucs “were flying to the football. Flying to the football. I didn’t see that last year.”

* Not overly impressed with Bucs offense. “We looked vanilla offensively, but effective.” Beckles then said that this time of the year defenses are ahead of offenses and pretty soon the offenses will catch up. So no need to panic. Yet.

* Bucs cannot gloat. “That was just one game. Mess around and poop on yourself in Week 2, that [Week 1 win] just disappears.”

* Beckles said he saw “good, bad and ugly” with the Bucs but mostly good.

* Big ups for a Bucs starting safety. “Antoine Winfield, Jr. was all over the field. I love that kid. If he stays healthy, he’s going to the Pro Bowl. If he stays healthy, that’s big. He’s got a little Ronde Barber in him.”

* Beckles like the tackling. “I thought the tackling was excellent, for the most part. When it comes down to the end of the year, good tackling teams make it. I saw some wonderful things tacklig.

* A reborn Devin White? “I saw Devin White look like Super Bowl year Devin White. All over the place. Flying. When he is at his best, he is one of the best. He just is. We just need consistency from Devin White.” Beckles advised White to just play. He will get paid. Maybe not by the Bucs but someone will pay him.

* Loved rookie nickel corner Christian Izien, at least for one play. “The DB kid, Izien? Unbelievable interception. That was just a theft. But he was ugly as well.”

* Overall was impressed with the Bucs. “As a whole, I don’t have many complaints about this Buccaneers defense. They were flying.

* Thinks Shaq Barrett is the anti-Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. “Shaq Barrett was flying yesterday.

* Thinks Vita Vea is on the verge of dominance. Vita Vea is starting to figure out the hump-move that Reggie White developed. If he figures out that move, everybody else is in trouble. He did it a couple of times and those [Vikings offensive linemen] had no chance.”

* Didn’t think Bucs offensive line stunk. “I thought for the most part the offensive line played well. I didn’t hear Tristan Wirfs’ name at all. At all. At all. If Tristan Wirfs falls off 40 percent, he will still be a fantastic left tackle. That’s how good he is. I am done worrying about him.”

* Not happy with Rachaad White. “Not good enough. But at the end of the day, if you still have the ability to run the football at the end of the game, it’s important. And the Buccaneers had that.”

* Loved how the Bucs played defense but saw some glaring mistakes on defense, specifically broken coverages. “And they were blatant. That’s got to be gone.”

* Beckles also didn’t like the drops but Mike Evans has the street cred to get a pass. “I’m going to worry about Mike Evans about as much as I worry about Tristan Wirfs.

* Beckles added he’s not a fan of Baker Mayfield but what the Bucs needed from Mayfield, they got. That was “don’t lose the game.”

* Beckles said the Bucs played safe football. “It worked. It may work against Chicago but to go far, you can’t play safe.”

* Beckles wants more sacks. “We have to put the quarterback on the ground more. The way the Bucs played defense, you put a pass rush with that, we’re talking the Buccaneers of old.”

* Beckles thought Mayfield played “perfect” in making sure the Bucs won but “Baker Mayfield needs to smarten the hell up. Quarterbacks don’t last 17 weeks playing like that. It won’t happen. He’s not Josh Allen. … Tom Brady ain’t getting no licks but he will be there for 17 weeks. … It’s great you are inspiring people but you can’t inspire anyone from the bench.”

word…missing beck on wdae talking ball…brang the man back in the fold… 🙂

    ——————–

also i’m thinking we put up some points on sunday…i’ve got us winning 30-20…

but i’m not sure if it’s close…like 23-20 and then we create late separation mid 4th quarter to go up 30-20…

    or

it’s an in hand win where we’re up 30-13 and they score a late td to make it closer at 30-20…

    i can’t decide…but i have us winning 30-20

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

If Bucs stay healthy out there I don’t see Chicago scoring a touchdown.

  5. Fred McNeil Says:

As long as they keep fields from escaping there should be more sacks this week. I’d like to see another interception or two also. Shake the kids confidence. I suspect McCollum has better hands than Davis.

  6. Larrd Says:

Why is he “not a fan of Mayfield?”

He looks like a shrimp next to Marpet.

  7. adam from ny Says:

i’m excited for mccollum this weekend…let’s see whud he can doo

also chicago is gonna come in here playing hard — fighting for their lives…

because if they lose, they go to kansas city next week for the then eventual 0-3 record…

so they are gonna give it their all, and score some points…i say 2 tds and 2 fgs…

at a possible 0-3, there season is almost over by october 1st if they drop the next one and fall to 0-4

  8. SB~LV Says:

    Yes!
Noticed that right out of the gate!
The vibe of this young REBUILDING team really surprised and impressed me.
I had ragging and raging all offseason
    My humble apologies!

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Playing safe? Going for it on 4th down from your own 32 late in a tied game?
Kicking 57 yard FGs……not safe at all.

We played safe enough not to have any turnovers.

  10. Fred McNeil Says:

You could look at it this way Adam: the Bucs really need this game too. Just as bad as the Bears. We’ve got Phillie coming to town well rested on Monday Night and they ain’t coming to deliver gifts to all the good girls and boys in Tampa. Then we have the Saints in the Sewerdome. This is a crucial game for us.

  11. Infomeplease Says:

I did notice dramatic Improvement in the Buc’s tackling! They were fast to the ball and gang tackling! This is what will get the D off the field and resting on the bench!

  12. sdm5821 Says:

I know it’s only week 2, but I have concerns this game has ‘Trap Game’ written all over it. Missing pieces on the defense, Canales still getting his feet wet with play calling, home opener, etc. Ideally, the Bucs win the toss and receive, then proceed to crank out a 10+ play drive that ends in a TD and eats 90% or more of the 1st quarter. Much rather play from ahead than behind.

Get past the Bears and odd as it may sound, I can actually see the Bucs going into their bye week at 4 – 0.

  13. adam from ny Says:

    Fred:

oh yeah philly on 10-11 days rest is gonna be overwhelming…

if we can win on sunday, i almost say wing it vs philly and see what happens…while actually secretly preparing for 2 weeks for the saints…

i think the key is to win the saints game and go into the bye hopefully at 3-1…

yeah i actually said just wing it against philly and whatever happens, happens…

we’re gonna lose some games this year and philly is probably an L even if we do preparation

  14. adam from ny Says:

the tackling, gang tackling and ball swarming was magnifico last sunday…

i couldn’t get over the hard hitting and crackling sounds of the pads…

    the bucs were hitting dudes…

because “we’ve got dudes” on this team

  15. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Ian spends a couple of hours breaking down the tape after every game, and not too many of the talking heads on radio do that if any. Ian is very good at identifying where the weaknesses are and the strong points also. WDAE was foolish to not retain his services.

    ^^^^^^^^^
I haven’t listened to Beckles much, but I was in the Tampa area for the 2005 Draft, they had Beckles on, asking him about O-Linemen, he said he’d need to watch tape on them…It was embarrassing, although he was honest that he hadn’t put the preparation in to answer.

  17. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

I mean the guy never played on a winning nfl team so

  18. Salary Cap Hell Says:

    I like Ian’s opinions as well…

    We can’t look past Chicago….
They will be playing for there jobs.

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

Beckles is spot on about Mayfield. He will not last anywhere close to 17 games playing like he plays. No way. All I can say is, Be ready Mr. Trask..Be ready. You will get a few shots at starting this season. And thats a Fact.

  20. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Some key buc players are in ‘contract years’ balled out at Minnesota last week, including mayfield, and the Bucs will have some extra jingle in their pockets because the cap gets bigger every year, and the Brady weight will be gone like the wind.
This here party just may be getting started.

  21. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I hope the Bucs are taking a hard look at Johnathon Taylor about rite now….

  22. Hodad Says:

I’d rather hear what that real O linemen standing next to Beckles has to say.

  23. Cobraboy Says:

I agree with Beckles: it’s a good start.

One other item that many fans and a Joe rant against is his comments about the ground game. It was there at the end, and that is a BIG +.

“It’s not how you start, but how you finish.”
-The GOAT and Other Wise Football Gods

I am hopefully optimistic, but if they play poorly or lay an egg against Da Bears, that optimism will evaporate.

  24. Joe Says:

I mean the guy never played on a winning nfl team so

Neither did Bill Belicheat. Or Bill Walsh. Or Bill Parcells. Or Mike Tomlin. Or Andy Reid. Or Bruce Arians. So…

  25. Woodenman Says:

Give it a rest 5821 a trap game lol it’s 2nd game of the season we both need to win just like every team we are not over looking them this early in the season and either we play well or lose where is the trap . Just for future reference a trap game is when you are looking ahead . We according to the experts are not good enough to over look anyone.

  26. JimBobBuc Says:

Trap Game! Our vets need to be vocal and keep the team focused.

Evans is playing for a raise, he needs to step up this week after his drops last week.

Our pass rush wasn’t good last week, other than blitzing and Nelly’s sack. We need an effective rush from four rushers. Then spy Fields to stop his runs.

Reduce White’s runs and give the ball more to Tucker and the other guys.

  27. Esteban85 Says:

I don’t think they played safe. I think they played smart.

  28. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Anyone see Philly’s last few drives against Minny? They force fed them boys the rock and couldn’t be stopped. We will not beat Philly. Their offense and defense at this point in the season are too good for us.

  29. garro Says:

Beckles give the Joes a percentage of his “sports radio personality” empire?

The dude is nothing more than another retired player stirring the media pot with his BS. Zero credibility.

    Go Bucs!
