Tristan Wirfs’ First Go As A Left Tackle Against An Opponent; “It Sucks Not Getting Another Day”

August 16th, 2023

Left tackle Tristan Wirfs.

Big step in the journey of Tristan Wirfs today in practice against the Jets in New Jersey.

Why? Because he didn’t get to play in the Bucs’ preseason opener and he’s learning a new position.

The massive right tackle turned left tackle got plenty of work as the Bucs’ offensive line had what Joe would call an inconsistent session.

Wirfs is hard on himself but he felt good about his work today and will miss a chance to do it again tomorrow. The Jets unexpectedly canceled their practice with the Bucs scheduled for tomorrow.

“Lots of stuff to correct still,” Wirfs told Joe after practice. “I thought my sets were pretty good. I still got to be better at throwing my hands. My left hand is still, you know, still getting there. I can’t throw my inside hand, did that a couple of times. I don’t think it was too bad. It was great to see new moves, see new [opponents] and see new fronts. … It was a competitive day, an emotional day. It was awesome.”

How about losing that second practice against the Jets, Tristan?

“Not too bummed. Yeah, it sucks not getting another day in pads against a different opponent, but with how many fights there were today, there probably would have been double tomorrow,” Wirfs said. “So I don’t think it’s too bad. We’ll still get good work in pads against our own guys.”

Lavonte David also told Joe losing the second practice is a real lost opportunity, but it’s up to the Bucs to get the most out of practice themselves.

Head coach Todd Bowles downplayed the loss of the joint practice, saying the Bucs can accomplish their goals on their own.

I guess inconsistent is better than awful

  2. Buc4evr Says:

Should kept Tristan as RT this year and gotten another LT. As it is the right side of the line is going to struggle not only on pass coverage but the run.

  3. DS Says:

Feels like bowels zapped the dog out this team. Even Wirfs has became mortal, why would you take a 2 or 3 time all pro and move him.

  4. DS Says:

The lost decade came back so damn fast

  5. Jp09 Says:

I don’t think y’all understand the standard Wirfs holds himself to. It’s why he’s an all pro. He’s not going to be satisfied until he’s perfect in every set and he’ll never be perfect in every set because no one ever has been or will be. One thing he will keep doing is bust his ass to be the best. Quit over reacting, he hasn’t even played a live snap at left tackle yet.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Jets seem to have gone all-out to build the best team that money can buy. Bucs are familiar with the concept.

Still, they did finish last in the AFC East last season with a 7-10 record and had lots of talent, especially on defense. Improved their ‘weapons’ on offense (Rodgers & Cook especially), but it’ll mostly come down to how well their OLine performs.

Todd Bowles downplayed the loss of the joint practice… after saying that the joint practices were much more helpful than preseason games… but hey who cares if your time doing the “much more helpful” thing just got cut in half?

  8. Jeffrey Becker Says:

it’s not too late to add an offensive lineman

  9. David Says:

Brand new position and he doesn’t get any reps… This coaching staff is not very bright. Bowles is a defensive genius, but it is becoming so abundantly clear that he is not a head coach.

Since left tackle is the most difficult OL position to fill competently, it’s not so easy to just get another one. I won’t be surprised if the Bucs wind up with one or two new OL name on the roster/practice squad after cut-down day.

  11. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Is it just me or does this feel like last year all over again? Jensen not playing, Gage hurt, questions all over the oline. Thing is, my expectations are much lower and I care less – takes the pressure off.

  12. All_da_way Says:

IT is very similar. This time I think the Bucs were not as complacent and and drafted OL and WR for this very reason. So far Mauch and Palmer look to have a bigger role on offense than anyone could have guessed months ago.

Ever try to play golf left handed if you are a righty? Epic Bowles Blunder is underway. Good thing we got rid of Smith and Mason.

    ^^^^^^^
Have you ever heard of the salary cap? Look at how much Smith and Mason were due to make, after both having subpar seasons last year. Do you even follow football? It seems like you can’t even grasp the basics.

  15. HC Grover Says:

    Joe Mitch triggered again.

  16. Admiral Redbeard Says:

Screw the f’n jets. Bowles should get them on a flight back to Tampa first thing Saturday morning, then have a college style Red n White game Saturday night at the Lichthouse.

    LOL
Not even close to the same thing. More like teaching a platoon of Marines to start marching with their right foot instead of a the left.

  18. Joe in Michigan Says:

HC: You didn’t answer any of the questions. Saying somebody is triggered is not an answer. What would you have done to keep Smith and Mason? Gut the defense to keep 2 subpar players?

  19. Wild Bill Says:

Not letting all those top Bucs play at least the first quarter of the first game was stupid. With only 3 practice games and the second one cut short(?) the Bucs starters have had limited practice time. One week to go, they need get the A players busy next week for sure.

  20. CleanHouse Says:

    Bowles is beyond terrible.
    Fire him yesterday.
