Todd Bowles On Rachaad White: He Must Prepare For Punishment

August 9th, 2023

Bucs RB Rachaad White.

Last week at Bucs training camp Joe was talking to running back Rachaad White after he flattened a defender who stood in the way of White getting a big gain.

This came two days after White was the victim of a cheap shot from camp meat outside linebacker Brandon Bouyer-Randle. White took a forearm shiver to the grill which sparked a fight.

White told Joe that, yeah, he can be a very physical runner when he chooses to be. He picks his spots, White told Joe. Though Joe didn’t ask why, Joe is confident it was career preservation because running backs take a beating.

So Monday, Bowles said in his after-practice presser that White better get ready for physicality because it’s coming and much more than he took last season.

“You’re going to get hit more at running back than any other spot,” Bowles explained. “He’s got to understand that he has to block, he’s going to take some shots – he’ll get more of a physical burden than he’s gotten in the past because he was really splitting time at the end.

“He’s got to condition himself, mentally and physically, to understand and take the pounding of a 17-game season.”

It sounds as if Bowles doesn’t care for White picking his times to dish out punishment, among other things. Is this why his advanced rushing stats stunk so much last year? Like how he was terrible at breaking tackles?

Joe thought Bowles’ comments were rather interesting since they came on the heels of White telling Joe how he picks and chooses when to muscle up.

when White doesn’t feel it’s worth taking his hits he should sit out and let someone else play till he feels ready to play physically. No sense having someone in the game that needs to be resting.

I took Bowles comments like White is seen as the RB1 & will get a workload like a RB1 (of yesteryear)….” he’ll get more of a physical burden than he’s gotten in the past because he was really splitting time at the end ”

To me…Bowles is hinting that Vaughn / Edmunds / Tucker aren’t expected to take snaps to keep everyone fresh. Which doesn’t make a ton of sense to me, in today’s NFL.

Success this season like last, depends on the run game! The Bucs need production from RW and the other running backs if they intend on competing for the division. The O-line really needs to step up for that to happen! And yes RW is going to get beat up like LF did the past couple of seasons! Hopefully the new offense can be balanced and can produce first downs. That would take some pressure off of the QBs and RBs and both may be serviceable. We’ll see soon. Imo.

As far as RW1 choosing when to be physical, I flash back to 1984-1985 Walter Payton who would dish out as many or more hits with a good stiffarm! We wanted to make the defenders think about that!!

Walter Payton NEVER HELD BACK anything!

I played like you take a shot or you give one. Your choice. Much rather give one.

    Go Bucs!

  7. KC Buc Says:

Yeah this doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy about White. I love Info’s Walter type running backs, the King Henrys that hit harder than the defense. I think that mentality matters a lot for the durability and longevity of running backs. I don’t want someone out there who’s only fearless when they feel good. That’s some Rojo pulling up short baloney for losers

Will it be a surprise if the first play is White off Leftwich Tackle?

Doubt if White will be used on all three downs as Edmonds is a lot to handle out of the backfield and will draw enough attention to free up Kieft aka Mr Hands down the seam or single coverage on the outside. Brady had to beg to get pre-snap motion. Gonna be plenty of that.

This offense is going to much more than Vanilla this Year.

The kids frame is not Derrick Henry or Josh Jacobs or Nick Chubb

Dude is Eric Dickerson body and running style, slasher, cut back runner that pushes the hole and exploits out of position tacklers

Yes he will take more hits just based on volume of carries but his natural style limits his contact already

We need depth at RB to shine, I don’t care how good one is, two or more is always better

You can’t find Pollard if all you do is feed Zeke right?

  10. Pewter Power Says:

White is aware which is why he put on the extra pounds. Those licks get you ready for the regular season

I had a coach who called this the Santa Claus theory. “It is better to give than to receive.”

How about Bowles and his sound bites this training camp?
