“Serious” Baker Mayfield

August 24th, 2023

Baker Mayfield.

Joe found a comment at One Buc Palace today about Baker Mayfield interesting as it relates to players coming off the Tom Brady experience.

Known for his crazy physical preparation routines, detailed film study and coaching up teammates in groups and individually, Brady universally is known as the most serious quarterback in history.

So what about Mayfield?

New Bucs playcaller Dave Canales was asked today if Mayfield has shifted his intensity since being declared starting quarterback. Canales didn’t say Mayfield has, but he sees a very high level of focus.

“I can feel how serious Baker is taking this opportunity — this chance with this team,” Canales said. “…And I can feel that he knows the weight of it. And that’s good as long as he can put it in its rightful place, handle that pressure, carry it well and then just keep everything else just really simple with it. Then that’s ok. You know, he doesn’t have to act like that pressure is not there, that these situations are not real. It’s about looking at it, dealing with it and continuing to perform.”

Canales spent most of his career around a future Hall of Fame quarterback, a nine-time Pro Bowler well known for his preparation, Russell Wilson. So Joe is confident Canales is accurate when he says he sees a very serious Mayfield.

But Joe mostly was glad to hear about this because it means maybe, just maybe, various Bucs are not observing Mayfield and saying quietly to each other, ‘Man, he’s not taking this anywhere near as seriously as Tom did.’

“I can feel how serious Baker is taking this opportunity”

Maybe Baker losing his life’s savings to his corrupt family is providing a little extra incentive for our starting QB…

He needs this next big contract from the Bucs in order to catch up.

  2. Voice of Truth Says:

It’s his last shot. There is no greater motivation, if he doesn’t succeed with this chance, he is a clipboard holder for the rest of his days

  3. SlyPirate Says:

“Action without planning is the cause of all failure.”

Compare the two — TB12 and Baker
With TB12, You can quantify the actual things he does prepare himself and his team.

With Baker, You can feel he’s taking it seriously? WTH is that? It’s nothing.

    Now Trask …
Trask gets an opportunity to see the things TB12 did to be successful vs what Baker doesn’t do that leads to failure.

  4. Hodad Says:

Canales would’ve made a good life coach, or sports shrink if he put his mind to it. Maybe he’s using Jedi mind tricks. His ju ju seems to be working on the QB room.

  5. Mike S Says:

    “OK Now I’m Serious”

    LOL

  6. MikeD Says:

Russell Wilson, a hall of fame QB? in an alternate reality?

  7. Don’t tell me it’s raining Says:

Just saw where one of the haters wrote, “2020 Cleveland Browns had #1 Offensive Line”. This is supposed to cast shade on Baker’s season.

The fact is we had the third best offense that year and the Browns weren’t even in the top ten. We had Gronk, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Miller. Jones combined for over 1,000 yards out of the backfield. And for the record, OBJ couldn’t hold Mike Evans jock strap.

Baker and Brady each led their teams to 11-5 that year. I’m not saying Baker is Brady, I’m saying the 2020 Super Bowl Bucs were a better team than 2020 Browns. And a healthy Baker led that team to an 11-5 season and the playoffs.

  8. WyomingJoe Says:

Mike S… you continue to underwhelm me with your negative Mayfield comments. And that’s ok, because when Baker thrives in this offense I’m sure you’ll become his greatest supporter, lol.

  9. Mark A Swygert Says:

I wish that the haters on this website would at least wait until we start losing games that count before you lay on your insults. The decisions have already been made. This is the team we have and are going to war with. Your vitriol won’t change that basic fact. If you are really Bucs fans you will root for these guys instead of hoping to be proven right. Go Bucs. I hope Baker Mayfield has the best season of his career.

  10. Buc4evr Says:

Just hope Baker can get some help from this O line and the Bucs can get a running game going. Let’s hope the OLine can get serious as we know last chance Baker is.

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

I am not a Buc Hater. Been a fan since the teams inception. Just make sure you have your home Bar fully stocked for the season with our Bucs. You are gonna need to..Dull the pain of losing this season.

  12. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

It also could be simply we are getting closer to the regular season and that naturally focuses the mind.

  13. Bucs 95 Says:

We should go after trey lance hes got more upside then mayfield and trask

  14. Dewey Selmon Says:

    I’m hoping he’s feelin dangerous.

  15. I say I say I Says:

The bigger concern is how the team is going to run the ball. Take out the 26 yard gain on 4th and 1, and the rushing attack was still quite anemic last week with 46 yards off 31 carries, a measly 1.48 yards per attempt.

  16. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

No Mark we don’t have to eat up every plate of slop served to us.

They just had a fake QB competition and handed the ball to the guy that lost by every measure.

We don’t have to like that. We don’t have to support that.

If this team struggles we’re really not going to like it.

  17. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Bucs 95 Trey Lance is a bum.

Russell Wilson, a hall of fame QB? in an alternate reality?
    ^^^^
No, in this reality, let me educate you. In just 11 seasons, Russell Wilson has won a super bowl, was selected to 9 pro bowls, threw 308 touchdowns, threw 40,583 yards with a respectable completion percentage of 64.6% (which is slightly better than Tom Brady’s), rushed for 26 touchdowns and 5,000 yards. Russell Wilson has played in the NFL for half as long as Drew Brees and Tom Brady and Wilson’s current total career stats are about the same as those two future hall of famers when they were only 11 seasons into their NFL careers. So how is Russel Wilson not a future hall of famer?

  19. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Baker is ready to go. Just ask him.

  20. Nybuccguy Says:

Baker is worse than Jameis Winston. Bowles just signed his own pink slip

  21. Duane Says:

Canales came from an offensive system that was able to feature Geno Smith. Its gotta be user friendly for the quarterback. One can even argue that the system is so friendly that we had a Kyle Trask appearance a few times this offseason. Baker carries the weight because he is a gamer. Part of those intangibles that gave him the edge. Excited to see the Canales effect.

  22. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Baker Minefield: “I’m in good command of the offense, right now”

  23. The Beer Whisperer Says:

If Baker gets any more full of himself, I’m worried his uniform won’t fit.

  24. TB2023 Says:

I love how you guys are just quarterback pros. Especially Traskers. Lol they swear by it. But it’s all good. No one knows anything. Except the people who get PAID to make these assessments. I love how the tRaSk fans now will only root for the team if Trask is the one that plays. How about this guys….root for the best QB. Root for the TEAM to win games there are so many negative nancies on here like a bunch of Emo Kids

  25. MWhite Says:

TB2023 Says: “No one knows anything. Except the people who get PAID to make these assessments.”

Same guys who assessed Johnny Manziel, Jameis Winston, Jamarcus Russell, Matt Leinart, et al?

  26. 1#bucsfan Says:

TB2023 I’m not a baker fan but because he’s our QB I want him to be successful. I also wasn’t a Brady fan until he came to Tampa. Honestly I only hated Brady cause he won all the freakin time but then I learned about him while he was with us and what sold me on Brady was his love and preparation for the game. How he elevated others around them and taught them too. If baker does those things I’ll prob become a fan too but I’m also a trask fan. Unlike baker trask is humble and keeps his head down and keeps grinding. Baker from how browns days was arrogant. Maybe baker is humbled now. Haven’t heard to much arrogant comments from him since he’s bin here. Trask has made leaps n bounds since this year and has bin neck n neck with baker thru TC I just want to see him keep developing cause in that short amount of time he’s done great so why not keep it going. His ceiling is higher if by this TC he’s already caught baker. I just don’t want to see trask go the wrong way when cause he’s not getting the development he needs which is playing time.

  27. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Russell Wilson does not belong in the HoF

  28. ATLBuc Says:

Let’s go Baker Mayfield!!! You are officially a Buccaneer and Joe’s crewe has your back. All of us. Because all of us are die hard Bucs fans and we care more about wins than being right. I don’t have anything else negative to say about you Baker. Don’t let us down

  29. ATLBuc Says:

I got my tickets to the Philly game. 2nd row behind the Bucs bench. Who’s throwing the after party so we can all meet each other?

  30. Dadof Kings Says:

As a lifelong Sooner fan, I have followed Baker though his journey to all the teams he has been a part of. While he has not always had the level of success, he has all the tools of an NFL starter. He can thrive in this system, with more rollouts. I think many of you will be surprised. It won’t changed the bashing, because haters are always gonna hate, and much of the comments here are not even from actual Bucs fans, just people wanting to bash.

  31. The Beer Whisperer Says:

If Baker’s ego gets any bigger, he’s gonna need a larger helmet.

  32. steele Says:

We all know that Rah Rah Canales wants to install the Seahawks/UCLA system that he knows. Can he? The Seahawks glory years were about the defense. The offense? Beast Mode Lynch behind the OL and zone blocking—when it was working. Which wasn’t always. It was patchwork in most seasons. Russ Wilson’s gift was the ability to take off and make 30 yd runs, which kept defenses honest. He was forced to run for his life, a lot. As a passer, he was and remains streaky. Those Seahawks offenses often stalled for entire halfs or more, waking up to do enough to win, but usually on the strength of the defense.

Fast forward to now. Defense? A lot of question marks. It is not the Seattle LOB and Bowles is Bowles. OL? A problem, and at present, inferior to those Seahawks OLs. There is no smashmouth running back. Just Rachaad, a finesse guy. Baker? He’s no Russ Wilson in any way, and not a QB with wheels.

Bottom line, there remains a big gap between the Seahawks template and what is. Good luck to them.

Just saw where one of the haters wrote, “2020 Cleveland Browns had #1 Offensive Line”. This is supposed to cast shade on Baker’s season

That could have been me except for the hater part. I suppose you added that untruth in for splash. I stick to facts.

As shade a Twelve tear old girl could stand next to him and put him in complete shade.

Someone made a comment that is was Baker that was responsible for the Browns success and I gave him the reason why they were successful.

Fact Browns put 72 million extra dollars into talent the year Mayfield arrived.
Fact In 2020 Browns Offensive Line finished ranked Number #1
Fact Browns had the 3rd most rushing yards in the league but finished ranked 4th in total offense.
Fact Baker finished middle of the pack on the list of QB LEADERS.
By the way QB’s really should be a leader and not get their pan tied in a twist and avoid throwing to wide open receivers because they hurt your feelings. Hope Baker has grown up some.
    Back to facts.
Fact Carolina had middle of the pack O Line last year and Baker finished dead last amount QB’s. Had ample Running in McCaffery and a Receiver that thrived after Baker was canned. Good enough
That Chicago gave Panthers the #1 pick in a trade.

If Cleveland had a more than adequate QB in 2020 the AFC Playoffs would have went thru Ohio.

Mayfield is dependent on The teams ability to run the ball and a Strong OLine.
    Anything less and he struggles.

Fact. He put up 3.5 million of his own money to get the job in Carolina. Who does tat if they are any good. No one. Baker knows he is not very good. Cleveland found it out. Carolina found it out. Tampa will find it out. Doubt his cult will because they will find all kinds of reasons it is because of something else. Have some more Kool Aid. Imported from Jonestown and bottled in Waco.

You might even turn to making it about Hate when you don’ t even know.

  34. Buddha Says:

Russell Wilson is not a Hall of Fame. Close but not quite

  35. Since76 Says:

I will be happy if Mayfield can control his tendency to throw picks. Picks are the worst stat a QB can have. He throws a lot of them. No one talks about it. What has he done to control his Winston like ability to throw picks.

  36. kaimaru69 Says:

    @D CONE
FACT he has one wide receiver in Carolina to throw to that wasnt trash and that wide receiver would be a #2 on any real team. But spin your narrative

  37. Don’t tell me it’s raining Says:

    D. Cone all that hate is gonna eat you up man. You can see it here every day. Growing inside you like a cancer. Metastasizing your soul. Consuming your every thought. Shake n Bake is living in your head rent free and doesn’t have a clue who you are.

  38. D Cone Says:

It’s raining. Whether he does well or not won’t change my lifestyle a bit. I sleep llike a baby but Thank You for you concern.

Canales said it today that that our doubt is warranted.

    Jack Clark says:
Of course Russell Wilson is a future HOFer (summarized)

You’re right obviously but I don’t think you needed to quote facts- anyone who knows a thing about the NFL and isn’t a lunatic knows that. It wasn’t a controversial statement when Joe said it… you shouldn’t even need to defend that. Some people are just haters and they’re crazy… I appreciate you standing up for common sense but the guy you’re debating with is obviously an idiot and I don’t think he’s smart enough to change his mind even with you spoon feeding him all the facts.

  41. Trask To The Future Says:

All these ridiculous comments “defending” Mayfield and his career so far.

It’s very simple… his MARKET VALUE speaks louder than anything about how the best talent evaluators in the NFL value Mayfield. He was signed by the Bucs for PEANUTS. No one else in the league offered him much more than the small amount he signed for. He was even signed late in free agency because there wasn’t much demand for him across the league.

His market value was so low because he hasn’t played very well for multiple teams. He’s a mediocre NFL QB at best and the league knows it. Could he have some sort of career “rebirth” and play great? Of course anyone can. But the odds are against it happening.

This isn’t about “hating” on Mayfield. It’s about what’s best for the Bucs future. The Bucs are in danger of Mayfield playing fair but not great, leaving them without a top draft pick to select a possible QB of the future next year. Then they’re trapped with Mayfield and will probably have to pay him $15M-$20M for 3 years all guaranteed. A terrible situation for a team with cap problems.

Kyle Trask being the QB makes all the sense in the world… see what this 2nd round investment can do. If he plays well he has another year left on a cheap rookie deal. If he isn’t cut out for the NFL, then you go draft a QB next year, hopefully with a high pick after a terrible season.

It makes ZERO sense to start Baker Mayfield. ZERO.

  42. Trask To The Future Says:

    * Note: That’s $15M-$20M PER YEAR for 3 years ($60Mish).

  43. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Mayfield hasn’t had Godwin or evans to throw to in the past. Let’s see how he does with them. Too bad da gronk isn’t returning. That would be huge. Hopefully we have a Jensen sighting soon…

  44. Gerald Says:

Trask cry baby Bros are way worse than baker bros by far. Atleast Baker bros have individual accomplishments and a playoff run to talk about. This literally the saddest thing I’ve seen from any fan base. You guys are very divisive and must be actually Gator fans and not Buc fans.

  45. garro Says:

Anyone else think Canales talks too much?

    Go Bucs!
