Kyle Trask Is Mike Glennon

August 15th, 2023

Competing QB Kyle Trask

After a months-long siesta from Buccaneers fans, a prominent former Tampa Bay player has come out swinging.
Joe is referring to retired Bucs right guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996).

On his In The Trenches podcast, Beckles, who Joe has seen this summer at Bucs training camp, let loose on the state of the quarterback situation and the choice facing Team Glazer.

“Kyle Trask versus Baker Mayfield, and I want you to look at the correlation here, is the equivalent of Mike Glennon versus Jameis Winston,” Beckles ranted.

He asked the rhetorical question of which one is the best choice. “Neither” was the answer.

“It’s lump time for the Buccaneers; 27 rookies in training camp. That’s not the equation for success,” said Beckles, who remains bothered the Bucs gave away veteran guard Shaq Mason (trade to Texans) this offseason.

Mike Glennon didn’t throw interceptions, Beckles said, so he compares well to Trask while Mayfield is Jameis-like.

“Do you want to lose boring or do you want to lose exciting? That’s our choice. This is reality everybody,” Beckles said.

(Joe reminds fans Glennon pulled Rookie of the Month honors but ended his career with a 6-25 record as a starter.)

Beckles advised fans to pay attention to the politics of football, which dictate that Mayfield start in Week 1. Those supposed politics say Trask being the opening day starter tells fans he’s better than Mayfield, so it becomes catastrophic for fans the organization if Trask pays poorly.

The natural and reality-friendly progression, per Beckles, is starting Mayfield and then turning to “the future” with Trask if the team is losing.

And yeah, downer Beckles is convinced the Bucs are bad because he can’t figure out in what area the team has improved. He’s appalled that some analysts think the Bucs offense will be better without Tom Brady.

What kind of ridiculous hackery is this?

I hope Trask plays lights out in Saturday forcing you guys to scramble.

  2. Wild Bill Says:

How can Trask be taken seriously for now when the Bucs just parked him on his ass for two years. He may develop into a very decent qb but shamefully he is not much more than a first year rookie. He basically collected splinters on his ass for two years. Shameful planning by Bucs brass from the top down.

  3. StormyInFl Says:

If all Trask did was the past two years was collect ‘splinters in his ass’, that’s not the coaching staff’s problem – that’s Trask’s. If true, that’s on Trask. He had the ultimate example of self improvement in Brady, so I would hope he wasn’t sitting around waiting for the staff to ‘coach him’.

  4. westernbuc Says:

Wild Bill Of course he rode the pine. Tom Brady was playing here. Remember?

If Mayfield is as bad as y’all think he is, then Trask, after absorbing from the GOAT, should be able to win this competition easily. He hasn’t.

Gator fans are obviously blinded by their fandom here. I want Trask to do well because I want my team to do well and would love to have our QB. I want mayfield to do well for the same reason. I don’t want to go back to the decade before Brady.

What I’m not going to do is be delusional. Trask couldn’t beat out Gabbert and it doesn’t look like he’s going to beat out Mayfield. Does that mean his career is over? No. But it means he still hasn’t proven to be more than a backup

  5. Craig Says:

Trask was nowhere like Glennon in Camp. Maybe he botched his first real job interview, I know I did but in the end I got something better.

I don’t know why people keep putting him down for sitting behind Tom Brady. No coach that still has a job would have put him ahead of Brady.

If Baker plays well and Trask does too another bank truck will roll up to entice Trask away. That would be a shame because he could still be the face of the Bucs, even with a head coach who is against him.

  6. Boss Says:

let’s see….. Glennon- no SB, no off field issues
    jdub- no SB a r a p e and u b e r incident

I’ll take Glennon for moral superiority

  7. Beej Says:

We know how well Mayfield CAN play, (what he did uninjured in 2020). We do NOT know well Trask can play, but he shows promise. There’s no basis on which Beckles makes this judgement

  8. Boss Says:

like the site, but hate the hate for stand up guys while defending POS’ and loser coaches
if thats what it take to get access I get it, but at least say so.
First, Joe likes access but this site was not built on the back of access and it would thrive without it. Joe is certainly not beholden like other media is. Joe doesn’t hate stand up guys, and Joe certainly doesn’t defend loser coaches. –Joe

  9. Dew Says:

Kyle may be Brad Johnson but we won a Super Bowl with Brad. How good is our defense??.

  10. Dwayne Cone Says:

Wow I could be Ian Beckles. No Pro Bowls and not a Chance in Haiti of getting into the Hall of Fame.

Jeez W. Joe makes a better argument than this Guy. At least you can flush his and don’t have to worry about stepping in it.

  11. Bobby M. Says:

Agree with the take….we were 8-9 with Brady. We’ve lost veteran players who were good. Canales impact isn’t going to magically overcome these challenges and let’s be honest, that’s kind of what we’re banking on. The o-line is worse and we downgraded the QB position, Canales might be a great OC but he’s still game planning with lesser players.

  12. Leighroy Says:

Wild Bill, your logic is bad. Aaron Rodgers sat 3 years behind Farve, and love him or hate him you can’t take his ring or MVP trophies away from him now.

Not saying Trask will be nearly as good as Rodgers, just suggesting you find a more compelling take.

  13. Infomeplease Says:

So IB is saying our QBs are backups. He is entitled to his opinion. I believe across the league more than half of the starting QBs were backups at some point in their career. This is a “what can you do for me now” league and the season is still more than 31/2 weeks away. After a couple of games we’ll have a better idea of the potential that this team carries. Until then it’s anyone’s guess.

  14. Brandon Jeff Says:

Why all the hate for the Gators? They must have really stomped your college team in the past for you to be so butt hurt that you lash out at anything related to the Gators.
No other player seems to be rated good or bad based on the school he went to. All of this college affiliation bias is BS based on feelings and not by logical reasoning.
Why not let each player be judged on his own qualifications and not by the school he played for.

  15. J.B. Says:

I agree with the comparison, but think Mcknown/Glennon is more spot on. Lovie’s tank job got him one year with Jameis, might be same fate as Bowles.

  16. buccs99 Says:

I’d like to see Trask come out proving he’s a NFL starter. The problem is, what will win you games ? unproven in Trask, who’s not shown anything good or bad really or Mayfield, who has shown he can win games, play well but also show signs of poor play and poor decision making. What will win bucs games ? This is where i agree with Beckles. I dont think our future is with these 2. If it was, Trask wouldve already shown enough tools in those practices the past couple years to be a bonafide week 1 starter to the coaching staff. People dont have reservations for clear cut talent.

  17. Dew Says:

Imo it was good for us the Panthers hired Frank Reich as HC. He’s awful & went thru QB”s like water in Indy. Terrible pick to coach rookie QB IMO.

  18. Whimpy Says:

If Trask was from any other college he would get much better treatment on this site. He has done well with the limited opportunity he has had with the Bucs.

  19. buccanstopit Says:

Beckles is a pessimistic blow hard

  20. m milligan Says:

Beckles is an idiot. Be interesting to see if Trask get’s anytime to throw. Hard to evaluate anybody if you’re constantly under duress.
We better hope both are ready to go. The likely hood of injury with that O line could change things in a hurry.

  21. Joe Says:

If Trask was from any other college he would get much better treatment on this site.

Where a guy went to school has zero bearing on if someone demonstrates he belongs on the field and/or is a quality starter.

  22. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

I don’t believe that Ian or anyone, even the Bucs’ coaches, know for sure how the Bucs will do this season.

IMO, the GM hit a home run in the draft and also in free agency (with the UDFA’a). But those guys have to develop and that takes time. The job of Jason Licht is to build a team that can go deep into the playoffs and win a Super Bowl. But to expect that to happen this season with the situation with the salary cap is not realistic. But that’s OK. We as fans just have to have a little patience. 🙂

  23. Buddha Says:

Wait a second. Did Jamies ever have a season as successful as Baker’s trip to the playoffs and big win over Pittsburgh, 26 touchdowns 8 interceptions? Give me a break.

  24. JD Still Says:

Why all the hate for the Gators? It’s simply player envy, not hard, their players are impotent, their schools fall short, just don’t measure up, are too soft and cannot satisfy!

  25. JR Says:

Beckles is 100% correct. that’s the reality of the situation we’re facing. This team isn’t good. so stop telling yourself they are.

  26. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Lmao jesus I hope not

For one – Trask at least has a little more mobility than the giraffe did, and Mayfield at least flashed a season of efficient play without turnovers (26 TD and 8 INT or better than 3:1 ratio) vs Winston never having a full season with even a 2:1 ratio

My worry is that the 2020 Browns had a better O-line/run game by far, but the WRs are better here, and the defense hopefully. If we can get something like the 2020 Mayfield and bowles can field a top 5 defense we’ll be dangerous

  27. BucU Says:

No Jensen destroys any chance of having a solid Oline. I was pretty optimistic thinking he would be starting game 1. Now it appears they’re going to play the same game as last year with him. What a shame.

  28. Beej Says:

If we can’t run the ball any better than we did Friday night it won’t matter who’s the QB… They’ll just drop safeties into coverage knowing they aren’t needed to stop the run

  29. David Says:

Where do these people from to comment as NFL experts ?
It is so simple. Trask is still a rookie without playing a real NFL game. Why these so experts keep judging Trask without any NFL experience or history.

Trask played the last game poised and relaxed while throwing the long balls. The Bucs fans will take Trask any day over the clown, Baker as he went to his deceiving mode playing like a duck just to survive a pre-season game without throwing his usual picks. Dink -Dunk, Dink-Dunk,…………………..
    Keep Baker in the pocket force him to throw =======Here are results;
    Int’s, int’s, int’s ,…………………..

  30. Allbuccedup Says:

Trask is a victim of a very poor offensive coaching staff Leftwhich a bunch of old men and now a rookie offensive coach that doesn’t look any better than what we had before. Jason Licht doesn’t want a young qb to develop he just wants another retread. Tom Brady is a once in a generation qb Mayfield is not sorry!

  31. Scott Charlton Says:

Trask’s inability to grasp the basics while playing behind Tom Brady is the reason he’s more PR then a viable solution at Qb.
Baker Mayfield was brought in to lead this team with John Wolford as his back up. Trask will continue to sit on the sideline and attend to the clipboard duties in which he’s shown considerable experience in.
All NFL teams are going to measure long shot Qbs against Brock Purdy, and Trask hasn’t shown any ability to lead the Bucs given all the chances in practice or his brief stints during games.

  32. SlyPirate Says:

Beckles is a chronic pessimist. He’s been throwing shade on the Bucs for the last three years and yet we have 1xSB and 2xNFCS Championships.

FUN FACT: Beckles has never played on a team (college or NFL) that was better than .500. Dude is a loser.

  33. David Says:

Trask will not have enough time to throw in passing plays without effective running game and Baker will be forced into the pocket in regular season games. I am not sure how Trask even gained 100 yards of passing with zero rushing yards while he was in the game. No wonder Tom B. decided to retire away from Bucs. He knew what was coming.

  34. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Can we fans just see how the first 4 games play out before we all go doom and gloom? Defense should be better so the questions will be special teams and how the offense gels (or doesn’t) to start the year. If Bucs can generate a pass rush, they’ll keep the games close. If not, then start the trading and soft tanking.

  35. Winny Testaverde Says:

I don’t always agree with Heckles…but this is a pretty solid comparable.

  36. Posey99 Says:

All speculation. Trask still hasn’t played with a full set of starting players at any point in his career.

  37. Alanbucsfan Says:

When did Jameis lead an NFL team to the playoffs?

  38. westernbuc Says:

No one is hating on the gators. The only reason people mention the gators is because all the Trask fans who are pretending to know what this guy is all about despite the lack of film and production. He was great in college. So what? This is his third year and outside of some decent practices (within the past month) he’s not impressed. It’s obvious to everyone that the certainty around his success is driven by gator fandom

  39. David Says:

westernbuc Says: “No one is hating on the gators.”

Yes, you could be with the uneducated comments you present. You are posting that this is Trask’s third year in NFL. You are asking the Gator fans to stop promoting him as Bucs future due to lack of NFL real game films but at the same time you are dismissing him without playing a single regular NFL game. That is what I would classified as a Trask hater.

  40. Oneilbuc Says:

So let’s see Kyle Trask threw 1 pick in a preseason game and also had some good throws that were drop . But the 1 pick eliminated all the other good passes that he threw. He still threw for more yards than Baker Mayfield per throw. And now he sucks because he threw 1 pick with no blocking on a 3rd and 19 this fan base is a trip lol 🤣🤣🤣.

The reality of the situation is that you’ve never seen this team play in a regular season NFL game so you don’t know how this team is going to do. Stop telling yourself that you do.

  42. Optimist man Says:

People slow down and have a beer. Let the players play, the coaches coach and all you wanna be coaches stfu. It’ll be just fine.

  43. Optimist man Says:

People slow down and have a beer. Let the players play, the coaches coach and all you wanna be coaches stfu. It’ll be just fine. You’re very spoiled. Maybe Baker can and maybe he can’t. Remember you have the dude with two years worth of splinters on high ass

  44. D-Rome Says:

Beckles is usually spot on with his general analysis of the team even if the details aren’t quite there. Beckles upsets half of you because deep down you know he’s right and he’s fair. He’s correct when he asks where the team has improved since last year.

In what area is this team better than last year?

I was just glancing at a few Beckles posts over the past few years. If you are being an objective Bucs fan and you read what he wrote, you’d see he was spot on with his opinions on certain players and the state of the team.

  45. Rayjay1122 Says:

Lose exciting and then draft Caleb Williams.

  46. Since76 Says:

The offense will be better in my opinion due to the oc period. That’s the difference. How he could overlook that change I don’t know.

    ——————————————————————

Nobody, even the coaches know for sure how the team is going to play in the regular season. I like Ian Beckles and respect his opinion but don’t put a lot of value on his analysis now, several weeks before we start the season.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the offense looks bad to start the season until the O-line has a chance to gel and our new QB gets on the same page with our WRs and TEs. But I expect that they will get better and better as the season goes on. I predict that by Thanksgiving they WILL be better than last year, scoring more than 18 points per game.

And I believe our defense will be just as good or better than last year, again continuing to progress throughout the season. Speed kills, and we got faster on offense and defense. I expect several members from the 2022 draft class to take a big step forward, hopefully, JTS included. Shaq is back, claiming to be 95% back to normal. Several of the rookies on defense look promising and eventually, they’ll have a big impact including on the pass rush, hopefully sooner rather than later.

  48. Reedo Says:

Until Trask morphs into Glennon with that giraffe with a bobble head and throws that backwards-ass pass that I’ve spent years trying to forget then no, he ain’t Mike Glennon.

  49. Power Of Pewter Says:

Trask wasn’t able to beat out Blaine Gabbert for the backup role, even though the front office took every opportunity to tout him as the ‘future’. Not only that, but Ryan Griffen was kept on the roster on the practice squad, despite obviously no longer considered ‘the future’, solely in case of injuries. Because Trask was only 3rd string on paper, not reality. Now, Trask may become a good backup…I really hope he does… but there’s no evidence he’s a starter, let alone being a franchise QB. And drafting Trask in the 2nd round looks pretty dumb in retrospect. A second round offensive lineman drafted then would be a solid starter now. A second round DB or WR would have been great depth to have given the injuries at those positions the past couple years. A second round ILB would be ready to take over next year if White or David doesn’t return. Licht just pissed away that pick.

  50. Eric Says:

only one way to find out, start him in a few regular season games, practice and preseason dont mean squat.

Probably go with Baker and see if we got any hope, then put Trask in after that fails.

Why not see what the kid has?

  51. Wild Bill Says:

Listen up. I have never said that Trask is ready start. Truth is he got minimum coaching and virtually no playing time his first two years. How bad or how good is he? Nobody on here can possibly know. He has had a decent camp. So has Baker. But neither look like the second coming of Brady. Baker likely gets the starting nod because he does have significant playing time. BUT, multiple teams have dumped him. There is so little playing time byTrask nobody can be sure he is ready. And based on Bakers history there is plenty of room for doubt. I don’t give a rats ass who gets the job so long as whoever that is can get the job done. Most of you big mouths yelling for one or the other are blowing smoke out your backside.

  52. Wild Bill Says:

At Eric: Ahhh the voice of reason. You got it right. Most of the others lean one way or the other. Only time will tell.

  53. Brian Hand Says:

I’m optimistic about the whole situation I truly believe the bucs have the ability to win the south if mayfield manages the ball well the Defense is solid! Also last year Brady’s personal life did affect the team they just tried to keep it quiet…I believe they will be a solid team. I guess we all will see??? GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!

  54. David Says:

This so called expert, Ian B. was fired at ESPN. He is clueless.

  55. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Fired by bspn? That is awesome!
Props to Beckles for keeping it real.

That said: What if I don’t want to lose exciting OR boring, but I want to win?
    What then??

  56. garro Says:

    Beckles should have satyed hidden!
    What an asshat.

    Go Bucs!
