Early Ultimate Test For The Offense

August 14th, 2023

Offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

Perhaps the greatest evolution in modern times is the ability to watch every snap of every NFL game in less than 40 minutes via the condensed broadcast with an NFL+ subscription.

It’s at least tied with the NFL giving fans access to coaches’ all-22 film.

Joe almost feels badly for 20th century NFL fans. Those poor dudes had to watch a game and then wear out their VCR remotes if they wanted to study what was happening – and not be forced to believe what they read in a newspaper.

With that in mind, Joe was inhaling preseason games like candy over the weekend.

Jameis Winston squaring off against Blaine Gabbert? Fun stuff! Jameis actually looked very good, and Joe got a little queasy seeing Saints receiver Michael Thomas making a tough catch look routine while Alvin Kamara took two handoffs for a total of 21 yards.

Also on Joe’s big screen was the Jets’ preseason game against the Stinking’ Panthers.

The Panthers gained a total of 14 yards through their first five possessions. Think about stat that for a moment; it’s no typo.

And life only got marginally better for Carolina in the second half, when it seemed the Jets rolled out waves of dominant defensive players. The final score was Jets 27, Falcons 0.

Frankly, the Panthers-Jets game got Joe fired up. No, not because the Panthers were brutal. Joe was jacked up because the Tampa Bay offense gets to test itself against a beastly Jets defense on Wednesday in New Jersey. It’ll be a controlled scrimmage in which offensive coordinator Dave Canales finally will be free to open the playbook.

There’s noting more enlightening for an offense than to roll up against a quality defense.

If it goes well, great. If not, then maybe it’s a very early wakeup call. Joe would much prefer the latter come in mid-August then when it’s possibly too late in September.

Great litmus test for the offense, however, I also want Canales to be more aggressive in the preseason game.

  2. Jack Clark Says:

    We talking about preseason? Preseason???

I just got a DVR from Spectrum for $15 a month. NFL + id $7. I’ve only had the DVR for a week and I really haven’t used it yet. Biffest complaint about the DVR is it only works on the living room TV and it doesn’t have the much relied opon clock in the front. It aslr records commercials.
    Thanx for the tip.

  4. Fred McNeil Says:

BTW, it’s not really a test for the offence in any meaningful way. It’s just a chance for rookies and UDFAs to prove they belong

I think Joe is taking about the controlled scrimmage, not the pre-season game. I’m jealous that Joe gets to watch the scrimmage from the sideline. It’ll probably be better than the actual game.

You mean those meaningless preseason games?

    Go Bucs!

  7. MadMax Says:

Im sorry but this is a joke we are walking into…..so stupid

  8. MadMax Says:

What can you do….you only have whats there to work with and make the best of what youve got

    Drake!

  9. Scott Says:

Imagine if Zach Wilson carves us up

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Don’t understand why anyone would be concerned about whooping the Jets, or the Saints for that matter. Both teams are led by defensive gurus, and everyone knows that defensive-minded coaches make terrible HCs. Prevailing wisdom seems to be that they’re control freaks when it comes to their offenses.

What a waste that both teams went out this year and signed experienced starting QBs to ‘run’ their offenses. (Rats, sarcasm key is stuck again; how do I turn it off?)

Another season of when is Jensen gonna be ready.
What a joke. This organization is a mess.

  12. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I think the Bucs defense is WAYYYY to finesse and we will get bullied this week by the Jets offense AND defense.

Didn’t you mean “worthless” preseason games.

  14. ATLBuc Says:

I can’t wait for the practice notes from Wednesday practice!!

  15. ATLBuc Says:

Joe you should bring me along to take extra notes 😇

  16. PSL Bob Says:

Joe, might want to check the Box Score again, Jets 27, Falcons 0. I’m assuming the Panthers didn’t fare any better. LOL

  17. Obvious Says:

Heck Joe, you might as well take me along to. Pen and paper ready to travel!
    The more notes the better!

And I’ll pay for my own ticket! You buy the meals…. I don’t eat more that say the long snapper. You’re getting a Deal there.

  18. Ben Harvey Says:

Starters sitting again…I guess it is common to only see atarters for the last two games, but damn lets hope they come out firing week 1.

  19. John Sinclear Says:

Ben, starters don’t need those “worthless” pre-season games. It’s only the other 70 or so guys that need them – job interviews.

  20. Crickett Baker Says:

DR, I am concerned about the Saints. They looked better than I have remembered seeing them in the past few years. Did you get to watch them? I didn’t see the Jets game at all.

The Bears were the other team that looked scary to me.
