“Big Strides” For Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

August 12th, 2023

It’s been a strong spring and summer for third-year edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

That was the message from the Bucs’ general manager last night.

Jason Licht hopped on the Buccaneers Radio Network and spread the good cheer. He said Tryon-Shoyinka “made big strides” this offseason.

That’s probably a big reason the 24-year-old starting outside linebacker opposite Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett got the night off yesterday.

He was one of 10 big names on the Tampa Bay defense to be rested against the Steelers. Licht said that decision was not about injury in nearly every case, just more time for young players to be showcased.

Tryon-Shoyinka has 37 games under his belt and has no remaining excuses. The Bucs need him to improve and look like a dangerous pass rusher this season. So Joe was glad to hear Licht put his foot down on JTS improving this offseason.

Still, Joe tries to remember JTS is a young player, only one month older than rookie outside linebacker YaYa Diaby. There’s no shame in having a learning curve, but the time is now for Tryon-Shoyinka or he’ll quickly turn into a core special teams player and situational pass rusher.

If lastnight showcased anything i believe it showed outside of some really good starters we have no depth lol please go sign some vets! Really excited to see zyon get more playing time

  2. ModHairKen Says:

A lot of talk. But no action.

  3. BuxfaninTX Says:

Can you find a photo of JTS that makes him look tough instead of being a replacement for Kid n Play? šŸ˜‚

Yeah, the dude needs it, can’t tackle for spit!

  5. Destinjohnny Says:

He is our best outside pass rusherā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦.
Apparently the cuts are going to be hard?
    I donā€™t get it

  6. Jon Says:

He sat out for COVID. Big red flag for mental state and toughness.

  7. Buc4evr Says:

Ya Ya will surpass JTS by the end of the season.

  8. Caleb M Says:

I could be wrong but wasn’t he drafted for his “raw” talent?
I think he deserved a couple years to acclimate.

  9. Wild Bill Says:

Yes to Yaya the sooner the better.

  10. SimeonForHOF Says:

Tryon and Hall need to tighten up

  11. Bucs Guy Says:

I’ll believe it only when I see it on the football field.

  12. HC Grover Says:

ROFL send Plan 9 back to orbit. Ya Ya is far betta, Plan 9 does not have ‘The Right Stuff’.

  13. Vegasbuccaneer Says:

Time to sign some bets. Unless we’re tanking. Caleb

  14. Eckwood Says:

Scale of 1 to 10 wanting to play all out
110 percent effort run through a wall football.
Effort and Heart Trump slightly better talent
Over tens or hundreds of plays every time .
As a Famous Philosopher one said IT what It IS

    JTS – 4or 5
    Hall- 6 or 7
    Ya Ya – 8 or 9

  15. Kgh4life Says:

If JTS don’t pan out Diaby will take up the slack. He had some nice pressures last night.

  16. Buc4evr Says:

Serving up YAYAā€™s flame broiled chicken. JTS is history.

  17. Fred McNeil Says:

I saw Hall get good penetration on one pass rush. I wasn’t in the mood to rewatch the game today. Maybe tomorrow. We’re definitely gonna get better pressure off the edges this year.

  18. Fred McNeil Says:

    JTS is gonna be fine.

  19. All_da_way Says:

JTS needs reps. NO excuse not to have him out there with Hall.

  21. steele Says:

He needs to make big strides given that he’s coming from a virtual negative, and still has more to prove above that. Time to stop getting driven out of plays.

  22. Marine Buc Says:

#1 – That is the weirdest pic of JTS I have ever seen.
#2 – If JTS stays healthy he will have 8+ sacks this season.
#3 – I’m so happy football is finally here.
    #4 – Go Bucs!!!!

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Dre Bucsfan! .. ‘If last night showcased anything i believe it showed outside of some really good starters we have no depth lol please go sign some vets!’

Kinda came away with the same impression Dre, although several ‘depth’ players did stand out somewhat (Diaby, Gill, Palmer, Thompkins, Moore, Geiger, Edmonds). Not that any of them are ready to be starters though.

I think the reality of this season will be that we’ll carry a LOT of inexpensive young guys because we can’t afford any more expensive vets. Right now we’ve got $1.4 mil in CAP space to play with, and you can’t buy many groceries with that today.

  24. Winny Testaverde Says:

O-lineman and QBā€™s must be quaking in their cleats at the sight of this fella running around/past them.

  25. TonySoprano Says:

We keep talking about how JTS needs to add weight and strength, yet it looks like heā€™s taking estrogen. He looks younger and more feminine in every picture that comes out.

  26. Zwak Says:

Keep doing what youā€™ve been doing JTS, youā€™re one of the key pieces of making sure we get a new coach and first round low pick QB next year!

  27. IrishTony Says:

    @TonySoprano
Totally agree. He looks super feminine kind of concerning.

  28. Infomeplease Says:

    TonySoprano, estrogen!!!!!! Lol x6

  29. Infomeplease Says:

JTS what TonySoprano is trying to say is… Time to Man Up!!!

  30. Reality BucFan Says:

I don’t believe none of this….. We don’t know how to Rush the QB… It seems whoever we play against is always better at rushing the QB then us guess they are coached better…can we just over pay in hire somebody with history… because bowls has a loosing history anyway…so what do we supposed to expect….GO BUCS

  31. HC Grover Says:

That is one strange photo. I been telling ya. Plan 9 is from outer space.

  32. BigMacAttack Says:

If this isnā€™t a reason to start drinking at 7am nothing is.

  33. Tony Says:

They should’ve signed Justin Houston to a one year deal to whatever they could’ve & put him with Shaq & Kancey but instead now they have to deal with him in the division. Makes sense. Put him with Burns. Let’s see how Luke Godonkey does with them.

  34. Stanglassman Says:

Do you think cowboy fans are dumb enough to question Micah Parsons’s mental toughness because he opted out or 2020 abbreviated season? How about Bengal fans with Jā€™marr Chase?

  35. Dave Pear Says:

Ya thatā€™s what you want to do. Hold out a dude who has proven to suck on the field because you donā€™t want to see him suck on the field.

Bowles is one genius of a coach. We are some lucky fans.

  36. Dave Pear Says:

Actually when he puts his makeup on, JTS is a hot babe.

  37. Tony Says:

  38. IrishTony Says:

Stop complaining Bucs fans we have 2 Lombardis. 2 more than the Dixie Chicks and Carolina Kitties Nd one more than the Aints!

  39. Dave Pear Says:

True that, Irish. Iā€™ll have a Harp to celebrate.

  40. Dave Pear Says:

    But Goedeke sucks.

  42. Dave from Winter Park Says:

Bucs Fans, You want to put your hard earned CASH šŸ’°šŸ’°šŸ’° ā€œBling, Bling šŸ¤‘ā€ ON TODD BOWLES , WITH ONLY ONE WINNING SEASON (2015) AS A NFL HEAD COACH with a career record of 34 and 51ā—ļøNot me. Folks, I will be in Las Vegas August 24-27 and I will have no problem to bet the BUCS UNDER 6.5 (-122 @CircaSports) to win $2,000 (2,440 to win $2,000). Even Joe Bucs Fanā€™s own Ira Kaufman, a man who covered the Buccaneers for UPI in 1985 been reading the tea leaves, and can tell you about some bad Bucs outfits, including the Leeman Bennett coached 1985-86 teams that went 4-28. Itā€™s ā€œTanking for Calebā€ NOW ā—ļøDave Corcoran, 2018 Westgate Super Contest Winter Park, Florida.

  43. Crickett Baker Says:

Todd has yet to show me he wants to win. Now he is letting our starters rust..err..rest he says.

  44. Dave Pear Says:

Some coaches, they make moves and you go, ā€œhuh?ā€ But then they work out.

Other coaches make moves and you go, ā€œWTF?ā€ And then it goes even worse than everyone thought.

Todd Bowles strikes me as being in the second category.

  45. Capt.Tim Says:

Yeah, JTS is improving. Blah blah blah
Well, Thats Jasonā€™s lil secret, because he still looks like a bust to us.
Weā€™ll believe it when we see it.
    So far- nothing but words

  46. Slacker Says:

Hahahaha. Talk is cheap let’s see some results. Guy wreeks of bust so everyone wants to be proved otherwise

  47. Vlad The Impaler Says:

LOL JTS is a zombie controlled by aliens!
    Plan 9 From Outer Space

  48. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Maybe the whole team is zombies and the Glazers are aliens?
Just sayin…that would explain a lot

Iā€™ll believe it only when I see it on the football field. Yeah same here ditto!

  50. firethecannons Says:

yeah not sure what was up with the hair style, it is not working. He does not get a pass, he needs to prove himself on the field. He is so a far a bust, reminds me of Noah Spence.

  51. Crazyhorse54 Says:

Heā€™s not done a thing so any accolades are unwarranted. Heā€™s the preen king. Canā€™t get a sack as he takes himself out of the play most every time. Heā€™s a left tackleā€™s freak rusher.

  52. garro Says:

I think Licht has been a pretty straight shooter. So I will give him the benefit of the doubt on JTS. But I have not heard his name much in camp.

    Go Bucs!

  53. DJB Says:

    Josephine Tryon-Shoyinka

  54. HC Grover Says:

The hair is to cover up his 2 little antennae.

  55. FrontFour Says:

TonySaprano – JTS on estrogen – laugh out loud funny! And true!

  56. Wild Bill Says:

Perhaps Licht’s worst draft mistake ever. A #1 draft pick??? A puss who sat out a year with fear of covid? Odds for him to have a big turn around year are close to zero. Two full seasons as a full time player with no sign of improvement? Time to bite the bullet.

  57. bucsfaninOregon Says:

If JTS was held out because he is part of the “proven” players, I have missed a lot of games played. Maybe I should request a refund from DTV since they didn’t show me the games where JTS has shined. I have seen zero games where JTS has shown anything other than a big, fat bust.

Maybe they should hold him out permanently.

  58. Capt.Tim Says:

    Like many before him,
The front office will tell us how great JTS is.
Right up until they cut him
