Will Gholston Will Return

July 24th, 2023

He’s back!

Joe always likes to see good things happen to good people. And there are few better dudes in the NFL than Will Gholston.

And he will return to the Bucs for his 11th season.

Greg Auman of FOX Sports reports Gholston and the Bucs have agreed to terms and Joe is going to guess he will report to training camp like all veterans later today.

Drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 draft, Gholston has been damn good value for 11 seasons.

Gholston has never played with another team. Like Lavonte David and Mike Evans, Gholston played through some lean years on awful Bucs teams before finally getting a ring in 2020.

Sometime, somewhere, those three should have a plaque or something at One Buc Palace. You know, like three veterans who survived the NFL’s version of Iwo Jima or Omaha Beach. Three class acts that have lasted a long time to become champions.

Coincidence? Good guys lasting more than a decade in the NFL? Joe doesn’t believe in coincidences.

If anyone chooses to read up on Gholston’s long journey to the NFL — and you should — he got to the league the hard way growing up in Detroit. Since, Gholston has adopted Tampa as his hometown and Joe knows he wanted to continue his career with the Bucs.

So if Bucs fans are looking for a feel-good story to begin Training Camp 2023, it’s right here.

Gholston’s return just makes the Bucs interior defense all the more stronger and very deep. This, Joe believes, will make Calijah Kancey’s transition to the NFL smoother. Less weight on Kancey’s shoulders to get on the field right away.

Joe remembers during Ndamukong Suh’s first practice with the Bucs in 2019, Joe noticed how Suh took Gholston aside and you could see Suh’s mannerisms and how he was coaching up Gholston.

Joe hopes to see Gholston doing the same for Kancey this summer. Joe has a hunch that will happen from time to time. Gholston is that kinda dude.

    Glad to have Big Will back, quality depth and can help Hall and Kancey learn the profession. Let’s not compare football to WW2 tho… kind of a lame analogy, show some respect to the Greatest Generation.

  5. CleanHouse Says:

    I can’t wait until Sean Tucker gets cleared to play so we can stop hearing about how they didn’t draft a running back in the draft. Maybe they like most teams had a 2-3rd round grade on Tucker and thought the chances were good his heart condition would clear up. The last I heard he was expected to be cleared to practice by camp.

  13. Dooley Says:

    @Stanglassman

    Holding Tucker out of camp was probably precautionary. No way you give out the 3rd biggest guaranteed UDFA contract in the league w/o some idea of the players’ status. The 2nd half of every preseason game should be all Brown & Tucker out of the backfield.

  14. Biggun Says:

    Excellent, thank you Will for coming back home!

  15. ATLBuc Says:

  22. Defense Rules Says:

    Awesome re-signing! Good to see that JL obviously listens to JBFers who’ve been near unanimous in support of Big Will. Ya we’ll go with that.

  23. Zoocomics Says:

    @ Toad Bowles… agreed, would love to see Nassib back in the rotation, I’ve always like his game, underrated high motor guy… but is there any more room?

  24. Dooley Says:

    @DR

    We signed Gholston to a deal Worth $2.66M, but because of some weird legacy sounding loophole with Gholston being a player returning to the team after his contract expiring it only counts $1.317M against the cap, Licht & Greenberg strike again cause that’s value for a player that’s been eith the team since 2013

    Schiano Man
