Could The Bucs Be Channeling Greg Schiano?

July 14th, 2023

The PFF tribe weighs in.

Bet you didn’t think of this when trying to figure out how the Bucs can make the playoffs this fall.

The PFF tribe is of the mind the Bucs’ pass rush is horrid. That’s not exactly walking out on a limb when who knows when Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett will return and who knows if he can bounce back from his torn-up Achilles?

And with Joe Tryon-Shoyinka fighting to reach Gaines Adams’ production level, even a dude walking around with a white cane can see the Bucs likely will be hurting for an edge rush.

(Yes, Joe understands the Bucs loaded up on pass rushers in the draft, which is cool. Unfortunately, rookie pass rushers don’t often make much of an impact.)

Dalton Wasserman and Jim Wyman of the PFF tribe say the Bucs will have one of the best secondaries. As a result, the duo believe Bucs defensive backs are going to have to play “elite” ball and carry the defense if the Bucs hope to play meaningful games in January.

Biggest strength in 2023: Secondary

…It will have to be the best unit on the team because the Bucs’ pass rush cratered in 2022. Their most likely path to success is playing elite defense. This secondary, on paper, is a top-flight unit.

Well, Joe remembers well the last time the Bucs believed a strong secondary would be the answer on defense.

Back in 2013, former Bucs commander Greg Schiano loaded up on secondary personnel, in part because someone stupidly ran off star edge rusher Michael Bennett for no good reason. So the Bucs added veteran safety Dashon Goldson and future Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis.

How’d that turn out?

Well, the Bucs lost their first eight games and Joe was told that in October of that season, Team Glazer had seen enough and threw the switch and started negotiations with Lovie Smith to take over in January.

Bucs had the worst Offense in NFL in 2013. Remember blowing a 21-0 lead at Seattle?

LOL You trying to get Joe to drink on this fine Friday morning? Joe thought he had that memory purged that from his hard drive. 🙁

Nobody is channeling Greg Schiano, outside of this being the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the current roster has next to NOTHING in common with the roster Schiano & Mark Dominik put together in 2012 or 2013. We’ve got way more talent than that 2013 roster and Todd Bowles’ style, experience, and demeanor is at the opposite end of the spectrum in comparison to Schiano. Even the small stuff like how the players feel about Bowles is the exact opposite of how a lot of Schianos’ players felt about him.

In fact, our players talked about Schiano like former Lions players talk about how awful Matt Patricias’ tenure was as Lions HC.

I remember thinking Revis was washed by time we got him

I for one loved Dashon Goldson. His sometimes brutal tackles were echoes of an era of football I am apparently too young to remember. Revis is a scam artist however. The story you posted about Schiano a few weeks/months ago was very telling about his approach to coaching. He had no real experience or desire to learn about coaching at a pro level. What a gross mistake that era was.

The only two coaches to channel are Jon Gruden & Bruce Arians….for obvious reasons.

The thing I hate about these out of town writers is they look only at stats and base things off that. Few of them actually do research beyond that.

  8. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

It’s a general management issue… they put way too much money (in my opinion) on cornerbacks. That is not a recipe for success.

Wasn’t that the year we had that super-bug infection scare? What a bizzarro year that was.

  10. HC Grover Says:

    ROFL!!! Beast grin yet!

  11. Dooley Says:

    @Fred

Yep that was the MRSA season, and even then Schiano was the most toxic thing in the locker room lol

Bucs are just keeping their guys. This isn’t some grand big terrible scheme.

“Our secondary is so good it will allow the pass rush to get home.”

Yeah that was a galaxy brain Bucs moment. Coverage sacks are a thing, but as the primary strategy? Bad plan. You pass rush not to expose your secondary.

I remember over on plebbit (reddit) the Bucs sub was crowing that company line. REVIS ISLAND BABAY! Talk about insane level homer believe every line type stuff – that place never saw a terrible player or plan they didn’t accept like it was Holy Scripture. BLUE EYES WHITE DRAGON! Yeah right on our way to the #1 overall pick. If you disagreed they lost their minds and banned you.

There is nothing worse than fans/admins that are so inured to a narrative they are smugly self righteous about it – and at the same time being so ridiculously wrong. It’s an arrogant stupidity and it’s insufferable.

As much as I troll Joe about homerism it’s nothing like reddit. Don’t get me wrong Joe I think you guys do make an effort to remain objective. Reddit is home to people with a special kind of stupid. They pride themselves on the opinions they have like that is something to have self esteem about. In most cases opinions are meaningless. As they tip the fedora they bask in the euphoria of their own (false) enlightenment. Meanwhile they have the absolute worst opinions about everything. It cringe level sad and funny.

I get being supportive and positive, but you can’t lose your objectivity. The fanbase has to see things as they are. We can’t just swallow every line. We have to create our part of the feedback loop. We are the consumers and as such can force accountability.

Look we had our run. It was good. Now it’s time to pay the piper. We got some young players that hopefully the front office is right about. It’s not all in the pit because there are some vets mixed in. Bucs got talent. Bucs need to figure out QB, need to figure out O line, need to figure out RB room, need to figure out cohesion, energy and and effort level. Bucs need to figure out offense. That’s a lot of figuring out to do. Most Buc fans can accept the rebuild year. Hey we get it. It’s when you screw up the rebuild and stay in muck we get disenchanted.

It’s ok as long as you don’t keep burning years at the bottom of the cycle. That’s why franchise QBs are gold in the NFL – as long as that guy is playing at a high level you got a shot. If not then you have to hope you catch lightning in a bottle with a free agent vet.

@mostly peaceful. The way you just posted, sounds like you need to stay on Reddit. You’re complaining about things always occur in all fan bases. I get it but you don’t just as bad

  16. Oviedo Jim Says:

    Toes on the line, boys.

  17. garro Says:

    Jim who?

    Go Bucs!

  18. Cobraboy Says:

Goldson was fine, but the rules changed.

Even John Lynch would not be in the HoF under current rules: “Thou shall not blow up any offensive player.”

    Right string, wrong yo-yo.

  19. TDavis Says:

You can’t play elite defense without a great pass rush.
