CBS Not Impressed With Bucs Offense

July 6th, 2023

Bucs RB Rachaad White.

Two numbers nerds recently suggested the Bucs have the sixth-worst roster in the NFL. This was largely based on their disdain for Kyler Traskfield.

Jared Dublin seems to share this assessment. The CBS NFL scribe was himself ranking rosters and he thinks Traskfield really drags down the offense.

Oh, and Dublin does not like how the Bucs ignored the league’s worst rushing attack in 2022.

Tampa’s offensive depth chart is in free fall. The offensive line has taken a couple steps back these past two years, and not adding another back alongside Rachaad White (who looks like he has juice but was wildly ineffective last season) was probably a mistake. Oh, and now Baker Mayfield is under center.

As Joe has stated, the advanced rushing stats for White were really bad. What spooks Joe is running back is the easiest offensive position for rookies to succeed, especially as runner. And White failed, though he was pretty good as a receiver.

The Bucs not addressing the running back position in a running-back-loaded draft tells Joe the Bucs really believe SpongeBob was the main culprit for Playoff Lenny, Sneak Vaughn and White having such a subpar season.

I guess that’s fair , being since we are not particularly impressed with the guesses of those CBS prognosticators.

More indictments of the Flat Brim brainiac.

“The offensive line has taken a couple steps back these past two years…”

Last year, yes (injuries galore). Two years ago, not so sure about that. This year, Jensen should be back at 100%, and I suspect Wirfs will be a success at LT. If Cody Mauch fits in, we should have a solid line overall…which means the running game will benefit substantially. Ok, a lot of if’s there. If if’s and but’s were candy and nuts…blah blah. But this drivel from CBS is another overly pessimistic assessment. And probably that way because the Bucs are not going to have a good “product” for popular TV viewing this year, so they try to condition people to get pumped for the other teams they will broadcast.

I hope we don’t regret not picking up a Hooker!

Canales and Mayfield: A Match Made In…?”
    July 7th, 2023

    By JOE 2.0

In the pantheon of football unions, some duos seem as perfectly matched as peanut butter and jelly: Montana and Rice, Belichick and Brady, Aikman and Irvin. But let’s face it, folks – the latest entrant into this buddy comedy doesn’t exactly have us reaching for the popcorn just yet. I’m talking about the new dynamic duo of Dave “Champagne” Canales and Baker “The Wake-n-Shaker” Mayfield.

Now don’t get me wrong, Canales certainly spun some magic last year in Seattle. Geno Smith, a once forgotten name, was suddenly lighting up the field like a Roman candle on the Fourth of July, and all thanks to a little Canales pixie dust.

But Baker? The same Mayfield who, until now, had an NFL career that resembled more a second-rate roller coaster than a rocket ship to stardom? The jury’s still out on whether Canales can work the same sorcery on Mayfield as he did on Smith. I mean, making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear is one thing, but can he turn the Cleveland Reject into Tampa’s Treasure?

But hey, this is football. Stranger things have happened. Maybe the combo of Champagne Canales’ coaching and the Mayfield Mojo is just what the Bucs need. After all, nobody expected the Brady-to-Gronk magic to translate to sunny Tampa, and look how that turned out.

So here’s to the unexpected, to the unanticipated miracles of football. If Canales can pull this off and Mayfield leads the Bucs to a winning season, maybe we’ll be adding another pair to our peanut butter and jelly list. Or at least, we’ll have a really good laugh along the way. After all, that’s what football’s all about, right?

Can we please get to week one to kill these nothing but negative offseaseason articles?

  10. BUCFAN_3 Says:

You can’t judge an offense that has a new system and rank it without seeing it first hand. Stats are great but means nothing without proven concept. We a new OC and QB not to mention three new starters on the O-line we have no idea how good or bad the offense will be. So let them predict all they want!!!!

  11. Bojim Says:

    What’s a CBS?

  12. Allen Lofton Says:

They only had 2 of their offensive linemen from 2020 team – injuries hurt their entire offense. 2023 offensive line could well be better – meaning more wins for the Bucs – just have to play it out to get the final answer.

  13. Mosey Says:

    Always a problem!!??

  14. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

All these evals are going to be low because they believe Mayfield is garbage. If it were 2018 and the Bucs had just drafted Mayfield, same guy, they’d be ranked in the top half at a minimum.

And no Tom Brady = must be bad now.

When they play, that’s when we’ll know. The rest is just mental m.

  16. stpetebucfan Says:

Bucfan 3 FTW. Exactly. I too am unimpressed with the Bucs offense. I haven’t seen them take a single snap and there is major turnover on the OL!

That doesn’t mean squat nor does the CBS OPINION.

I wish there were an equal number of stat nerds/geeks who would go through all the preseason projections and then grade them with actual results after the season. I’m seriously curious.

  17. Marine Buc Says:

    Kareem Hunt…

Cheap, experienced, played with Mayfield in Cleveland and still has a little tread left on his tires.

He would be a nice RB2 and our RB room wouldn’t look as weak as it currently does.

  18. SlyPirate Says:

    Sean Tucker
Has he been medically cleared? Top 3 back in the rookie class.

  19. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

It has been a long time since all the National Media was so down on our team.
Buc Bashing seems to be the new national sport!
Of course, I hope we prove them all very wrong!
    Go Bucs!

  20. Chad Stone Says:

I agree, Hunt at RB is what I’ve been thinking all off-season. In addition to being a top tier runner, he would be an excellent security blanket out of the backfield for Baker.

  21. Buc4evr Says:

Think White is a good RB with a horrible O line. Fix the OLine and White will be fine.

  22. Cobraboy Says:

    Buc bashing is the norm.

Buc respect with Brady is the outlier.

    We are back to “normal.”

  23. Craig Says:

I have high hopes that this will be a different Bucs team than old Bucball. They do have a lot to prove this season, but these negative reviews might make the first few weeks easier since no one has a clue what this team might be able to do.

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

Its hard to be up for an offense who has a QB who has been passed around and cannot find a home due to his play.

  25. Rand Says:

It’s ironic that every time there is negative comment directed at only Baker Mayfield how Joe intentionally inserts Kyle Trask into the comment giving the appearance that they share equal criticism. But when the comment is a positive comment about Mayfield Joe intentionally omits Trask from the equation.

Cover up Joe your bias is showing.

  26. Crickett Baker Says:

Y, you can’t make a silk purse out of a pig’s ear but you CAN take a diamond in the rough and polish it up to be a sparkler!

  27. Destinjohnny Says:

Why would they be. Having the Worst lines in football dont usually translate for winning football.
    But its the coaches fault…….

  28. garro Says:

Ok …Now they are just piling on…isn’t that a penalty?

    Geez!

    Go Bucs!
