Top Conference Streak Is On The Line

June 12th, 2023

Bucs QB Kyle Trask.

This blew Joe away yesterday. Joe thought maybe it was due to polishing off one too many cans of Bromosa.

Perhaps Joe is still afflicted with PTSD from all the nut-kicks this Bucs franchise has given fans prior to Tom Brady showing up on Jason Licht’s front door. Maybe that’s why this stat blew Joe’s mind.

Would you believe the Bucs currently hold the NFC standard for active consecutive playoff appearances? That’s right. The Bucs have made the playoffs the last three seasons.

That best-in-the conference streak is really hard for Joe to wrap his head around but it is true.

Can the Bucs extend it? Like anything else in the NFL, it’s up to the quarterback.

Joe has a hunch after seeing Baker Mayfield join Tristan Wirfs and Ko Kieft at a Rays game (and drinking macro mass-produced beers with Rays fans) that Kyle Trask better start upping his game.

Maybe Trask needs to use whatever pull he has with Tom Brady to score sweet tickets to treat Wirfs and other teammates to one of Dana White’s Las Vegas human cockfighting events (Brady is a business associate of White).

Trask also could hire a local pitmaster and treat offensive linemen to a Texas-style barbeque. It seems this works wonders for offensive linemen.

Or he could just out preform Baker in camp, and win the QB job. It’s a QB competition Joe, not a popularity contest. The QB who doesn’t turn the ball over, and makes the right play will probably start. Being the most popular is not the same as being the best. I’m sure there are plenty of great QB’s who were S.O.B.’s, and not very well liked by teammates. Baker can take them to ball games, buy them dinners, but if he turns the ball over, and plays to level he has in the NFL so far, he’ll be looking for a new team instead of leading the Bucs.

  2. HC Grover Says:

We had Brady the last 3 seasons to overcome Bowles Blundering.

  3. JD Still Says:

Nothing wrong with going to a Rays game and supporting the local team, but this was a bit too public and had the feel and smell of an agent arranged event ,( as does many of the ā€œresistance is futile Kyle Trask!ā€, articles we are seeing) . Agent propaganda is expected but it needs to be released after the job is won ,youā€™ve done a good job and you ā€˜re looking to be compensated properly , but this had the feel of desperation, right now Baker would have been better off and made a better impression showing heā€™s serious about wanting to lead the team,(remember all those hokey commercials Baker made in Cleveland during the regular season while his team was losing?not a good look), by staying home and memorizing the playbook ,( thatā€™s probably where Kyle was), that would have made a better impression, He needs to remember that the competition has just begun and he hasnā€™t won anything yet.

  4. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Wow. That is an insane stat.

  5. bucsfaninOregon Says:

Well, the UF fans have made their opinions known already. If Mayfield beats out Trask it will be a “stolen” QB competition.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Mayfield graciously taking selfies with Rays fans………

  7. Buddha Says:

Hope some of that Rays magic can rub off on the Buccaneers. Win seven games at home and you are in the playoffs. Who picked Texas? Who picked the Rays? Who thought the Yankees and the Red Sox would be mediocre?

  8. Joe Says:

this was a bit too public and had the feel and smell of an agent arranged event ,( as does many of the ā€œresistance is futile Kyle Trask!ā€, articles we are seeing) .

LOL If you are implying Joe has some handshake deal with Mayfield’s agent — Joe has no clue who his agent even is!

Joe doesn’t deal with agents. On purpose. They are far more likely to use you than to offer up candid, reliable information.

Outside of crossing paths with Drew Rosenhaus at the Shrine Game practices in St. Petersburg a couple of years ago for a Shaq Barrett story, the last time Joe spoke with a player’s agent was LeGarrette Blount’s agent when a local old lady tried to fleece him for cash after a fender bender.

Blount hasn’t played for the Bucs in, what, 11 years?

  9. shankasorous Says:

When youā€™re short, fat, on your 4th team in 7 years, and sport a 24.5 QBR each of the last two seasons despite being a ā€œmobileā€ quarterback, yup, you better buy a round of beers.

  10. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

yeah but does last season’s playoff appearance REALLY count?

  11. Craig Says:

Trask needs to do his own thing and not look like he is sucking up to Mayfly.

If he stays the course he has been trying to attain for the last couple of seasons he has a chance to beat Mayfly, though I don’t think it will help him be the day 1 starter.

A good showing will make the decision to bench Mayfly after he falls apart easier.

Trask will probably be the starter after the bye.

Well, the UF fans have made their opinions known already. If Mayfield beats out Trask it will be a ā€œstolenā€ QB competition.

Yep. And afterward, if Mayfield is the starter, the’ll be hoping for Mayfield to fall on his face, so their hero can get the job they feel he should have been gifted all along.

  13. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Players like to win more than anything and this feel good social gathering is meaningless. Look for which QB not only performs better , but which QB will deliver the ball on target and on time knowing he is going to take one in the chops. Also look for which QB will willingly stick his nose in there to get the hard yards at the goal line. My money is on Trask to be willing to do whatever it takes to win and Mayfield not so much.

  14. BucU Says:

Couldn’t care less who wins the “competition”.
Just perform and perform well. However I can’t imagine how Trask sitting and studying Tom Bradys every move for 2 yrs then not win the starting job when his number is finally called. If he can’t win the job then the 2nd rd draft pick was a complete wasted pick.
He should be dominating after studying behind Brady.

  15. JD Still Says:

To Joe Says: Why Joe! I am shocked! Shocked I tell you! That you would think I would think there is anā€ I love Bakerā€ propaganda campaign going on! Thou protesteth too much! I mentioned no names nor any particular articles, just that it had all the trappings of a media generated event , I mean Mayfield and two Bucs veterans show up at a high profile game , are seated with a great view of the field as a backdrop , the Bucs veterans quickly disappear from the video, ( strange that no one asks them for autographs,no?), then the camera that is taking the video just happens to be placed perfectly for great pictures , (how fortunate! Who woulda thunk it!), and then the kiddos coming up single file to get the autograph of their future hero! ( too bad they couldnā€™t get any pictures of Baker hugging puppies or kittens ) but I am sure it was all just one big coincidence after another , nothing staged there , no sir!

  16. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

LOL this is reaching comedic levels of cope and desperation.

Trask must be dominating the QB battle so far for Bake and his agent to try to work a PR campaign.

  17. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Stormy if Baker wins the battle and balls out we’ll shut up. It’s all about winning.

If he struggles you’re damn right we’ll be calling for his benching LOUDLY.

Be prepared to eat crow like the rest of the blind homers wanting a 24.5 QBR and 170 YPG QB to be the guy.

Why have a cheap vet be in there if you’re going to lose games anyway? Might as well get your draftee reps and build for the future. We’re confident Trask will outplay Baker before it’s all said and done.

  18. shankasorous Says:

That video is so STAGED. The camera is clearly on a tripod, zooming in and out and moving perfectly left and right, but without any of the “shake” you would get on a hand-held camera. It must have been quite the production getting that tripod past security and into the seats.

  19. geno711 Says:

    Shankasorus:

Mayfield QBR for every season in the NFL:

    51.2
    54.4
    65.5
    40.9
    24.5

    Getting things right counts.
More important stat is passer rating than the made-up ESPN QBR that favors quarterbacks that run a very lot:

    93.7
    78.8
    95.9
    83.1
    79.0

My guess is that Kyle Trask’s QBR will be lower than most quarterbacks because QBR over rates guys who run. It will be much for fair to look at Kyle Trask’s passer rating.

I haven’t seen enough of Trask as a pro to have an opinion on him either way. Did not want Baker necessarily here but if he is actually the better of two at moving the team down the field and the new OC feels that way, then the job should be his.

  20. Cian O'Malley Says:

They say Mayfield has a knack for making bad decisions. Well, joining the Buccaneers is his grand masterpiece! Move over, Picasso, we’ve got a new artist of destruction.

Bowles and Baker, Baker and Bowles:

But their game plan? Oh, what a sight!
Baker throws interceptions with all his might,

    @geno711

You’re wrong. You keep mixing up Mayfield’s RTG with his QBR. ESPN shows Mayfield’s QBR (which benefits “mobile” quarterbacks) as being 24.5 in 2022 with the Panthers, and 24.5 again in 2023 with the Rams. Look it up … 24.5 and 24.5.

If Mayfield wins the job and stinks it up, I’ll be right there with you, calling for a change.

If Trask wins the job and stinks it up, would you honestly say the same thing? Or will you be making excuses and claiming (as some have) that he needs the whole year?

Whoever the starter is week 1, should be benched during the bye if they stink it up. Hold them to the same standard.

I honestly do not care who wins and I’ll support whoever. I don’t think some of the Cult of Kyle groupies can say the same.

Personally, I don’t have much hope that either one is the answer, and the Bucs long term starting QB isn’t on the team yet.

  28. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

geno: QBR is for running QBs

Well except for Tom Brady who never ran and played half his career with a bad knee and had a career avg QBR 6 points higher than Baker’s best season.

  29. Donā€™t tell me itā€™s raining Says:

After spending one day with the Rams, Mayfield entered the game and scored more TDā€™s than Trask has scored in his entire NFL career. BTW Trask has a QBR of 1.6

For some reason the Trask Fanboyz always fail to mention his numbers.

  30. Duane Says:

Geno111 – QBR doesnā€™t overemphasize the ground game, it properly includes it. Remember that every play that doesnā€™t result in a pass attempt is still considered in QBR. For instance, sacks are counted with yards lost; also quarterback fumbles figure in, regardless of whether itā€™s a quarterback run or a handoff to another runner.

Passer rating takes none of that into consideration.

Given that about 40-45 percent of all plays in the NFL on average are scored as running plays, and even more are scored as sacks, ignoring that much of the offense and the game is a very poor representation of what offenses actually do. The quarterback, or whoever takes the snap, is the only player who touches the ball on every play. Every play counts.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It’s chemistry-building. I’m in favor of it. Becoming friends with the guys assigned to protect you is smart.

    For Baker, it won’t matter.

  32. Danny Husak Says:

Baker went to a ton of Indians & Cavs games. He doesn’t need an agent to be Baker. Danny

  33. The Beer Whisperer Says:

If Mayfield is as good as he thinks he is, the Bucs should well this year.

  34. The Beer Whisperer Says:

*Bucs should do well this year*

My editor called in sick today.

  35. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Stormy Baker has had sufficient burn in time in the NFL, Trask has not – so the standard which they are both judged should be different.

4-6 games you should know what you’re going to get with Baker.

4-6 games with Trask you should expect to see your ROI begin to materialize on upward trending. Although you might see it earlier that that.

Really it’s the eye test. What do you see? A guy struggling or a guy building?

New OC, new QB we need to temper our expectations.

The problem I see is the Tampa fanbase is already salty over yet expectations in 2022. Now they went out and signed a guy who is a reclamation project now matter how you slice it. So it’s more than Trask/Gator fans being mad. It’s about how the team makes personnel decisions amid adversity. We have not seen Trask play outside 9 passes in the reg season, but

  36. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    (Continued)
but we’re going to throw him in the dumpster even though we saw good things last preseason?

It’s frustrating. What’s worse is we know why – is a desperation move that scraps patience for mediocrity in order to try to save some coaching jobs.

I don’t want this org to plan for mediocrity. Take the chance with Trask. The ceiling is much higher. He’s a prototype. Let him cook out there.

Baker is a brash guy who talks a good game, but it hasn’t materialized into Ws in the NFL. This is his track record and thinking somehow Canales is going to change that fortune with scheme is aspirational. I keep feeling it’s a screwjob that we’re getting the hard sell on because men in that building don’t have the stones to take a chance on a younger QB.

  37. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Going to the Rays game with team-mates is cool, a nice gesture. But, I don’t think that means a starting position, with the Bucs.

I’m pretty sure, the Bucs coaches aren’t highly concerned about the Rays, when their own jobs are on the line.

  38. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I will admit: I liked all of Baker’s commercials. I think he’s a good actor.

Has he been acting like a good QB, all this time?

  39. Crickett Baker Says:

Great find, Joe. It kinda blew me away, too. I can hardly wait for Aug. 11 to see if anything has improved! GO BUCS!

  40. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Really rain? Stats on a guy who played 2 series of downs.

You know maybe the Chargers should have had a QB competition with Tyrod Taylor after Herbert was drafted – you know only in name only?

  41. shankasorous Says:

    @Donā€™t tell me itā€™s raining

You do know Trask was given only 2 series at the end of the last regular season game playing with not one offensive starter, right? Oh, you don’t? Didn’t think so.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

Was it free ticket night at the Trop? Maybe the people thought the Lightning were playing there again like it was 1995, or hell a Tampa Bay Storm game. I can’t believe they have that many people there.

  43. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Fun fact: Rick Stroud lied about Trask’s ability to pickup the playbook.

  44. Donā€™t tell me itā€™s raining Says:

I agree you canā€™t compare Traskā€™s NFL numbers to Mayfieldā€™s. So what would be a ā€œfairā€ comparison? College career? Surely thatā€™s a more fair comparison.

Mayfield played three years at OU and Trask played three years at Florida. Trask didnā€™t play a full season his first year, so weā€™ll compare their Jr and Sr years.

    Trask (Jr. Year)
    Att: 354 Cmp: 237 Pct: 66.9
    Rating: 156.1

    Mayfield (Jr. Year)
    Att: 358 Cmp: 254 Pct: 70.79
    Rating: 196.4

    Trask (Sr. Year)
    Att: 437 Cmp: 301 Pct: 68.9
    Rating: 180.0

    Mayfield (Sr. Year)
    Att: 404 Cmp: 285 Pct: 70.5
    Rating: 198.9

So letā€™s look at their career highlights and awards.

    Trask

-Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award (2020)

    -Second Team All-SEC (2020)

    -FBS Passing TD Leader (2020)

    Mayfield

    -Heisman Trophy (2017)
    -Manning Award (2017)
    -Maxwell Award (2017)
    -Walter Camp Award (2017)
    -Davie Oā€™brien Award (2017)
    -Chic Harley Award (2017)
-AP College Player of the Year (2017)
    -Sugar Bowl MVP (2017)
-Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year (2017)
    -First Team All American (2017)

Thereā€™s more but Iā€™m tired of typing.

All Iā€™m saying is letā€™s compare apples to apples and quit saying Mayfield sucks and Trask is our future, when Trask hasnā€™t shown anything better than Mayfield. Iā€™m not saying Mayfield is our savior but Iā€™m hoping he will give us a winning season. And I see no reason to talk trash about him.

  45. Duane Says:

The streak will remain intact. Noone in our division got better, and it could be argued that every team has a quarterback question. If its all a push this season, I will go with Evans and Godwin as the difference. This season is for spite. Bowles isnt the only coach on the hot seat in the division, and his seat may not even be the hottest. Nawlins is likely in for a rebuild while paying the piper, I dont even know what is going on in Hotlanta, and Carolina’s new QB seems a bit to sleight to me. LFG!

  46. Steelers fan Says:

Baker trying to win popularity coz no way in h%&L he win vrs Trask in the long run of a season! Bank that

  47. David Says:

Donā€™t tell me itā€™s raining Says:
“No reason to talk trash about Baker. Trask hasn’t how anything and hope Baker give us winning season.”

Well, why not Baker is trash. You are the one trashing Trask without seeing him playing a meaningful game while hoping see the good version of Baker in his 6th year.

  48. Oneilbuc Says:

Don’t tell me. Baker Mayfield played in a conference that don’t play defense. Trask played in the SEC which means he played against waay harder competition. How did Baker Mayfield play against Georgia vs Kyle Trask against Alabama? How about Trask against Georgia vs Baker Mayfield against Georgia. This is Baker Mayfield 4th team in 6 years and y’all acting like Baker Mayfield has been good in the NFL. Baker Mayfield will start the season and I think everyone knew it when they snig him. The Glazers are trying to sale tickets as well. So I’m not surprised at all because I don’t believe the bucs will ever developed a quarterback they have failed every quarterback they drafted and that’s a fact. Love my bucs but the truth is the truth!!

He did not play 2023 yet. There has been no 2023 season.

  52. shankasorous Says:

    @Cian O’Malley

It’s called a typo. Mayfield had a 24.5 QBR in both 2021 and 2022. Look it up. Pointing out online typos is for those who lack intellect.

  53. Donā€™t tell me itā€™s raining Says:

Oneilbuc, I agree the SEC is tough conference but I know OU played Auburn in the 2017 Sugar Bowl, when Mayfield was a Sr. And he led them to a 35-19 win against that SEC team. I know OU played Florida in the 2020 Cotton Bowl and spanked them 55-20. 20 points doesnā€™t seem like very much against a team that doesnā€™t play defense vs the greatest QB in the league. Iā€™m pretty sure Trask was the QB that year. So thatā€™s a head to head matchup between the team Mayfield played on, from a conference that doesnā€™t play defense and Kyle Trask and the Florida Gators. You would think a record setting QB in the best conference would bust 50 on a team from a no defense conference. But somehow it didnā€™t happen that way.
