Roster Shuffling Coming?

June 9th, 2023

Salary cap hopscotch on the way?

At least one NFL insider seems to think Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht might either do some magic with the roster or rework contracts in the coming days or weeks.

Yesterday, uber NFL insider Albert Breer of SI.com Twittered out an updated list of teams’ salary cap positions. Last week it was reported the Bucs were under the $401k plan, as that was how much the Bucs had under the cap.

Per Breer, the Bucs now have the least amount of cap space in the league with just $347,000 to play with.

The Bucs also announced they signed five rookie draft picks yesterday. Joe doesn’t consider this news as for years rookies have slotted into a salary scale. News would be if a rookie held out.

Joe does not know if Breer’s figures reflect the Bucs’ cap space before or after the signings. But Breer did add this:

Obviously, the teams at the bottom will likely do more to create space. And the pace at which teams are signing rookies affects this as well.

So, what is Licht to do? Rework Mike Evans’ contract (again)? Re-up Tristan Wirfs? Dump disgruntled Devin White?

Devin White. It’s time to cut bait with that prima donna.

  2. Pickgrin Says:

Bucs are on the hook with White for $11.7M unless they trade him.

Few teams would want to trade very much for just 1 year of White’s services at the $11.7M price tag.

4th or 5th rd pick is about all any team would want to give up in this situation.

Bucs might as well just hold on to White for 1 year since we don’t have an adequate replacement in line just yet and then let him walk next year in free agency and collect the 3rd rd comp pick.

Hopefully that 1 year will give Sirvocea Dennis time to catch up to speed and he will be ready to start by next year.

Giving Mike Evans a new, extended contract is the only viable option right now for the Bucs to gain cap space in 2023.

  3. Sly Pirate Says:

Pretty sure Licht had a plan a long time ago. It’s his full time job.

  4. adam from ny Says:

i think a lot of teams will want devin white for one year at 11.7 mil…

    that’s fair…

imagine signing his for 5 years for 60 mil…

i would totally sign DW at that current rate…

and most teams would do it too

he is completely worth 12 mil a season

  5. shankasorous Says:

And bring in exactly who with the extra cap space?

  6. K2 Says:

Agree Adam…but White doesn’t want 12 mil per year. I think the Bucs would do that deal tomorrow. Devin wants $20 per year…that’s the problem. If White consistently played like his Super Bowl year he could get close to that number. Hopefully, his agent will let him know that he needs up his play and teams are not beating down the Bucs door for his services.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We really have no replacement for White……..we’ll need to tinker around with a few players to come up with more space…..

Todd Bowles ruined Devin White by saying he was the best or the 2nd best defender on the team…..assuming Vea was the other….Vea got paid & White didn’t.

  8. Letsbucinggo Says:

Licht moves like a turtle we are the last to sign our draft picks. He doesn’t like to trade or release his early draft picks. If Donovan Smith played hurt all year thats on them Licht should have brought in help when Jensen and others went down very bad upper management decision

  9. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I remember the argument on who was the better LB between the Dein’s when they were drafted. White or Bush. How is that working for Bush right now. Didn’t he sign with the Seahags? And not for $20M…lol

  10. realistic-optimistic Says:

When was the last time we saw White take over a game? Nothing comes to mind after the 2020 postseason. He’s not a star anywhere except in his own mind. A player like that is completely replaceable.

  11. Marine Buc Says:

    @ shankasourus

“And bring in exactly who with the extra cap space?”

    – K. Clancey
    – C. Mauch
    – Yaya “Chicken” Diaby

    That will cost @ $3.9M.

The rest of the money will probably be used during the season fro emergency free agent signings after injuries occur…

Although I would love to see the Bucs land Dalvin Cook – it probably won’t happen.

  12. realistic-optimistic Says:

I think Drue Tranquill would have been a better fit than White, and his new contract with KC caps out at 5 million. Imagine not paying 12 million for a disgruntled, mediocre ILB.

  13. Scott Says:

We are on the hook this year for a lot of Brady’s contract. We are screwed this year but next year that comes off as well as a few players guarantees so we can get rid of them and free up a lot more space.

  14. BucsLV Says:

Trade White for picks, start Dennis with LVD

  15. Mike Says:

I would expect the Bucs to extend Evans at some point.

  16. Craig Says:

    Always a roster shuffle.

I hope I agree with this one more than last season. Last season they dumped all of the young and fast talent at receiver to keep Scotty. That seemed dumb to me, but I am just a commenter.

  17. Buc4evr Says:

I hope the Bucs do keep Evans as there was a crazy story that he was going to be traded to the Jets….

  18. 1#bucsfan Says:

For all the people who say trade or release white. Who do you replace with him ? Besides LVD no one on the roster to replace white is going to produce what he’s produced and you fooling yourself or don’t know football if you think he hasn’t produced. Go and check the stats yourself. IM NOT A WHITE fan but if we get rid of him we will have a gapping hole in the middle of the defense with no one to replace it with.

  19. BillyBucco Says:

You guys are all saying we don’t have anyone to start in his place but we do.
Sirvocea Dennis is probably better in coverage than White right now and he still had 7 sacks.
Sometimes guys understand the position naturally and you get Luke Kuecley.
We have forgotten the days of the great QB/LB battle between Brett Favre and Derek Brooks.
    Baiting and switching etc.
White over pursues and misses tackles constantly.
He is the type of LB you want playing against our offense because the play looks like one thing and then is another. White is like a dog chasing a bone, you point and shoot.
Ask him to identify and then go goes against his nature.
Sirvocea Dennis might be better honestly.
AND, he already played with Calijah.

  20. Tony Says:

Devin White isn’t Derrick Brooks or Ray Lewis or Lawrence Taylor or any of those players. No way I’d pay him what he wants to get paid now. Bye Bye! I would’ve taken Josh Allen over him that year & it looks like that might of been the better pick but of course he’s in Jacksonville now. They should’ve traded him on draft day.

  21. FrontFour Says:

Trade D. White. Send him to the Texans.

  22. Fred McNeil Says:

As much as crybaby DW45 has worn out his welcome in Tampa we need this one more year out of him wether he likes it or not. Odds are he plays lights out this one year to earn an artificially inflated contract with some poor chump next year. Once he’s signed an iron clad contract he will just trot around every play like that monumental loaf against the Ravens.
I don’t want to resign that loafer, but I want to milk him for the last year of his contract while he still needs one last heroic performance
    Let the buyer beware

  23. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

I NOTICED MY LAST POST WAS REJECTED, I GUESS EXTREME OPTIMISM ISN’T ALLOWED ON THIS SITE..ANYWAY, I SURE WISH THERE WAS A WAY WE COULD FINAGLE THE SALARY CAP WELL ENOUGH TO NOT ONLY SIGN OUR TOP DRAFT PICKS…BUT SOMEHOW FIGURE A WAY TO LURE & SIGN “DEANDRE HOPKINS* TO OUR ROSTER ( WITH RUSSELL GAGE”S CONTINUING HEALTH ISSUES ) WE WOULD HAVE THE FINEST RECIEVING CORPS IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE !
