Report On Baker Mayfield Aura Around The Building

June 18th, 2023

Leader.

It seems the Bucs pulled back the curtain a bit for a visitor last week.

And that man opened up about his experience as it relates to the quarterback battle at One Buc Palace.

Former linebacker and longtime Vikings general manager Rick Spielman got the access in his duties for CBS Sports and shared on the With The First Pick podcast.

For Spielman, the QB contest is over.

“There’s no question that he is in command down there,” Spielman said of Baker Mayfield. “I mean, you can tell about his leadership, the way he walked around the field, the aura about him and the players, I think, believing in him.

“… I was very impressed with the command he had of that offense and just the aura that he had walking around the building and that leadership. And I think he is definitely going to be the guy in Tampa after seeing that live.”

Joe was intrigued by Spielman referencing the Mayfield aura “walking around the building.” That’s a line usually reserved for inside the hallowed halls of a team headquarters, not the literal meaning of walking around the building.

Spielman also added a couple of times that he was talking to important Bucs figures during his visit.

The hill Kyle Trask has to climb to win the QB gig sure feels like a mountain.

One thing is for sure, Baker Mayfield will never get another shot at QB1 if this gig doesn’t work out. Everything is setup for him to show the league something, barring injuries.

  2. ATLBuc Says:

A lot of words to say Baker has moxy!! I don’t understand how they pulled back the curtain. They let him watch a practice. No inside information. Just another opinion.

  3. Buc1987 Says:

    Aura?lol

    Stttop it!

    Go Trask go …beat Baker!

  4. garro Says:

I doubt Spielman was given any inside info.
Judging from what has already been posted here and elsewhere. It’s all just his opinions (aura?) based on spending very little time watching a practice that featured Maybefield working with the ones.

    In other words…More Maybefield propaganda.
    Bo Bucs!

  5. Christopher Smith Says:

    Shake it up Baker😀👍

  6. Crickett Baker Says:

Well, he called Trask “that other guy” until he was reminded, and he did mention Shaq Bennet, so he sure knows a bunch about the Bucs from the get-go.

  7. Drew Says:

    Aura doesn’t win football games.

  8. AnonymousBuc76 Says:

“The way he walks around the field” “the aura he had walking around the building”…

Really?? Get off you knees bro…

None of that sh!t wins football games…Again Mayfield carries himself the right way; he says all the right things, but then he suits up and wallows in mediocrity…

He so awesome that he’s on his 4th team in a year and a half; what a leader 🙄…

Can someone please help me understand the love affair the media has with Mayfield because I don’t get at all…

  9. Bobby M. Says:

If “aura” was all it took he wouldn’t be on his 4th team. Russell Wilson is on the hot seat and he’s actually produced well over his career. Mayfield has ONE trip to the playoffs….his “aura” exceeds his actual production. All these guys have egos and just like with Jameis, that rah rah leadership only counts IF you produce.

  10. Hodad Says:

Since he’s been here he’s been doing all the right things. Listening to Baker now is night, and day different than he was as a rookie on hard knocks. Baker has matured, and seems to get it now. How this translates to the field, and real games remains to be seen. Trask will get his chances in preseason, and camp, but it’s become obvious Baker is the lead dog.

  11. Rand Says:

Baker always was the favorite while Kyle has always been put in prove-it mode, when actually because of Baker’s track record, it should be the other way around, but Kyle lacks NFL experience.

  12. JD Still Says:

LOL! “ The way he walked around”, really ? I’ve seen the way Mayfield walked off the field after losing fumbles , throwing interceptions and losing ball games in Cleveland , Carolina , and LA, same walk, same results! I’ve seen the way Winston walked out the door at Publix with crab legs and how he walked off the field after throwing interception after interception, and losing game after game, the way someone walks around does not impress me.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

May field has had the starting gig since he arrived. There was never a real competition.

Want proof? Just read Joe’s highlights.

How many times id they mention Trask passing to a starting WR like Evans or Godwin?

Bowles doesn’t dare risk allowing Trask exposure to players that reliably catch.

  14. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

I never spent much time at all looking at the way men walk so you got me there spiel.

  15. ATLBuc Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai. Bowles is going with the sure thing, proven winner Mayfield.

“Buccaneer Bonzai. Bowles is going with the sure thing, proven winner Mayfield. ”

You do realize that Baker has only won 40% of his games…right?

He’s more of a proven loser.

  17. Pewter Power Says:

Trask doesn’t win the job, baker plays well and don’t get injured trask may very well be a dependable back up in this league like a jacoby
    Brisett type guy

  18. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    Aura!?! You’re kidding us right?

  19. PNW Buc Says:

June fodder. Baker or Trask? Personally, I don’t care. Some people have their preference and that’s all good!
I want the best to win the job and establish a culture who will be around for a while and not just a bridge.
    Go Bucs!

  20. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Spielman has a cozy relationship with Mayfield’s agents it seems

  21. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Aura is actually the name of a stripper Spielman met frequenting a gentleman’s club on Dale Mabry.

  22. Truth be told Says:

The Bucs lucked out in getting him at this stage in his career and after TB12 leaves we have someone who’s looking to plant their flag.

  23. BA’s Red Pen Says:

The occult of Trask just put a hit out on Spielman.

  24. Norm Kuppe Says:

Hey folk long time Cleveland Browns fan, I was not a big Baker Fan, at first
So if you truly understand the real game and business of foot ball
    I’m 60 been a fan for a long time,
Baker’s gets a bad rap, he’s a baller, he is very smart, and has more than Adequate skills , it takes an organization as a whole to win,
Look as the Bucs resent seasons, Brady knew that organization was faltering.
The Browns are a shot show and have been for years,
If that Molester was in jail, Baker would still be the starter for the Browns, they lied to him,
And the next organization, really, let’s talk his NFL coaches he’s had, in Cleve
Infighting, power struggles, his coaching was the bottom readers
It take 11 guys doing their job correctly, and on the same page for any play to be successful, then if the right plays are not called with the correct options, any team is done,
Not say he is , but Baler will ball every play, play hurt,
Last time Brown were good was when we had Bernie Kosar
He had a lot of flaws, yep they didn’t when it all but, none of it was
His fault, he was football smart, he had accuracy, but very bad delivery, could run, but what he would do, he was not afraid, stand and take the hit , that is necessary in the nfl, would play hurt, played with a broken jaw, foot, leg ribs, fingers, play QB is not easy, Look at others, Trent Dilfer wind SB,
U think Farve was Brady, how about Rothslesbger, Folks it takes a lot
He was I will tell you, Baker is not Brady
He is A football smart guy, he’s won of the toughest guy u will find,
He will never give up ,quit, he will always be giving the team a chance to win the game at the end
Except for those games and all teams have those game that just get away
He is a baller, give above average coaching, and a solid organization all going in the same direction and he’ll give you chance
Good luck to you Buc Fans
Just a guy who loves old school NFL football players,

  25. Randal Parmer Says:

Also a 60 year old BROWNS fan and what the other 60 year old said is ABSOLUTELY TRUE. Any of u negative Nancy bucs fans tell me which one of your ROOKIE QBs took over a 1 and 31 team broke the record for TD passes as a ROOKIE, then inside of 3 years with 4 HC, OC, and w Front offices did anything? Baker might be done that is what happens when a QB with a broken shoulder is on a RUNNING FOOTBALL TEAM is forced to throw the ball around 60 percent of the time with ROOKIE OTs against the BEST PASS RUSHING TEAMS IN THE NFL and a group of WR’S that beat man to man less than 25% of the time. Sorry boyz that included OBJ in that group. The video shows when Baker missed him but they never show the numerous DROPS by OBJ when the game was on the line.
