“Final Exam” Week For Kyle Trask

June 13th, 2023

Bucs QB Kyle Trask.

Competiting quarterback Kyle Trask is in full student mode.

And part of being a student is passing tests. After the opening Bucs mandatory minicamp practice this morning, Trask said he approached this week “as a final exam” following weeks of learning the new Tampa Bay offense in spring practices.

Later Joe will share highlights and lowlights from today’s minicamp practice, but Trask said he’s still tightening things up and that’s what June is for.

“Progress is coming along little by little every day. I’m feeling very comfortable just grabbing the gist of the offense,” Trask said, who was very laid back and relaxed in his news conference.

Trask echoed what fellow QB Baker Mayfield said — that practices are less scripted and have more of a game-like feel for the offense. Lots of work on the headset for new playcaller Dave Canales, which helps quarterbacks acclimate to him in a game situation, Trask said.

Of course, Joe expects Trask to be studying all through the team’s six-week vacation. He knows he’ll need more than “grabbing the gist of the offense” once training camp kicks off in July. Trask will be battling for the opportunity of his career.

    Buc1987,

From freeman, to Jameis and now to Trask, here’s to hoping we have finally hit a franchise QB! It’s been great to root, debate, and cheer our Bucs together.

  3. micanopy Says:

Kyle will win as Baker reads Joe and thinks he has it in the bag, eating hot dogs, drinking beer, and expanding his girth at baseball games.

    LOL.

  5. Craig Says:

The relaxed part sounds like he might be ready to face it head on.

That is good, the whole thing might be good, and maybe the Bucs can surprise a few teams when Trask takes over.

  6. Buc1987 Says:

SteveK…yep nearly 10 years now I’ve been coming to JBF.

I don’t debate much anymore…just throw out a comment here and there.

What Joe, Trask will be battling for the opportunity of his career? Are you coming around to the realization this might actually be a legit QB competition?

It must be the other Joe

If Trask is relaxed usually means good news for the team.

Trask will win the #2 job. Big step up and in the right direction.

When Patrick Mahomes took over in KC, the narrative was that he was ready and there was no question about it.
We aren’t talking about them seeing him in preseason or anything, they just knew.
I want Trask to be the answer as bad as the next guy, and I really do think he still might surprise because he has in the past at every level, I feel as if there was a time the Bucs truly thought it was him, Baker would be thought of as a backup who still had a chance behind a rookie.
Because we are still putting him in a battle, makes me think at least BAs offense required so much pre snap analysis that it was all too much for Trask cerebrally.
Now with Canales, pre snap reads are not as important as it was when you still had to figure out the play, post snap.
If Kyle can’t do this either and loses to Mayfield who is reeling, what does that say about Trask?
Thats where the narrative for, “but Trask hasn’t played with talent” comes from.
One or two pics in practice doesn’t matter it happened with Brady all the time.
What happens when we play real pre-season games?
Are both QBs gonna get opportunities with the 1s?
You really think they will play that long?
    In games 1 and 2?
Thus is what happens when regimes change and offenses change, yet guys do not get the same opportunities.
It is still based off of past analysis partially.
No way in Hell does Baker make awful passes all camp and preseason and win the job.
But if all things are truly equal, then you go with experience and that is not hard to understand.
Trask needs to be Mahomes where a team knows and is excited about what a guy brings, and he isn’t.
That is why there is debate remember that.
