Ex-Bucs, Todd Bowles Defensive Tackle Breaks Down Calijah Kancey Film

First-round draft pick Calijah Kancey

Joe watched this 14-minute film breakdown and got even more hungry for opening day.

Buccaneers rookie first-round draft pick defensive tackle Calijah Kancey hasn’t been talked about much lately because, well, the Bucs have been playing flag football at practice all spring.

The good stuff/real stuff starts in seven weeks. However, former Bucs defensive tackle Beau Allen (2018 – 2019) is crazy confident Kancey will make a massive impact for Tampa Bay this season.

Allen did a film breakdown of Kancey for the Green Light podcast and was gushing about not only what Kancey is capable of but how well he’ll fit into Todd Bowles’ defense.

Allen said he and Kancey had the same defensive line coach in college, so they have a connection. And Allen still keeps in touch with that coach. Also, Allen said he spoke to multiple Bucs scouts and shared that they are beyond excited about Kancey as a complete player.

Allen pointed out Kancey’s elite footwork, how he can win 1-on-1s, and succeed against double teams. And Allen said anyone worried about Kancey being undersized is missing reality, “Play strength for Calijah Kancey is not a concern of mine.

This kid’s a keeper! I watched his tape and he has some skillful arms and hands. This D is going to rock!!

  2. WhatTheBuc Says:

Kancey 6’1″ 281 lbs at the combine. Warren Sapp 6’1″ 281 at the combine. Did anyone say Sapp was too small? Kancey and Sapp had near identical 40 times but Kancey was faster. Everyone compares Kancey to Donald and they are very similar but that’s just recency bias.

  3. Biff Barker Says:

The third try is a charm. JTS and Logan Hall play like a pair of 6th rounders.

  4. Buc4evr Says:

Looks good let’s hope he can get through training camp without injury. Hope he is better than JTS and Hall. JTS is a total bust, maybe Hall will be better this year?

  5. Mort Says:

He’s still a rookie lineman. He is gonna need time to develop. Stop with this extra needless pressure.

  6. Hodad Says:

Hate to admit this but when I look at a player like Kancey I look at his arse and thighs. That boy has power back there. Sapp had that butt and thigh power too. It’s what makes Wirfs so special. Height means nothing for a DT, low man wins. Kancey is going to be hard to stop.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hodad…..looking at his arse and not ashamed to admit it……quite a good arse it is!!!

  8. Bobby Says:

Kancey is going transform Bucs into Top 10 def this season. He will be another generational player! He is going to destroy offensive linemen!

  9. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … First it was Joe getting erections over sacks, and now it’s you & Hodad flipping out over a DT’s arse. You all are starting to scare me.

  10. Fansince76 Says:

I went back and watched most of his college games, looks like he should be a
    really good player.

  11. BillyBucco Says:

His swim move is elite already.
His quickness will throw Guards at first and then a double move happens when they try to adjust quicker.
I don’t think double digit sacks is unreasonable.
Finally hit on a complete draft IMO and it will pay dividends quickly.

  12. Salary Cap Hell Says:

Let’s slow walk this guy’s it’s 🏈 football….. Not anything more good ol fashion 🏈 football

Can’t wait for the kickoff… Even preseason at this point

  13. Ko Kiefer Says:

Excellent pick. Gotta love when best player available and need align. Let’s f*** up some quarterbacks!!

You do know that you’re supposed to admire and embrace those types of things or go to jail?
    It’s like…… the law……
    🤦‍♂️

  15. Pewter Power Says:

I have high hopes for the kid and Bucs but honestly Logan hall and JTS has good tape. College accomplishments mean very little at the next level and brown men are waiting to smash you in the mouth. Hopefully this line is good enough to give him his welcome to the NFL moment in training camp

  16. Winky Says:

    Go Bucs!

  17. BillyBucco Says:

Do you think Micah Parsons had a welcome to the NFL moment?

  18. garro Says:

Not convinced this smaller quicker DL is the way to go. Though it is interesting when a former Buc who played DL one year for Bowles says the guy is the real deal. If he can stop the run and help with the pass rush great. Not confident of the rookies run stuff ability yet. We shall see. Gholston did OK for a lighter player.
    Go Bucs!

  19. Defense Rules Says:

garro … ‘Not convinced this smaller quicker DL is the way to go.’

Neither am I, which is a primary reason I’d love to see us re-sign Will Gholston (he’s no longer a ‘lighter player’ after he packed on what looks like 20 lbs back a couple years ago).

Kancey for some reason reminds me of a lighter GMC (about 20 lbs lighter?). I’m sure that the Bucs will have him pack on some beef over the course of this next year, but I’d guess that they’ll see how he plays at his current weight first. I keep telling myself that it depends on how they use him. If it’s more on the outside of a 4-man front, he’ll probably do fine at 281 lbs. But I’m still concerned that he’d struggle as a 3-technique at that weight going against beefier OLines.

“Do you think Micah Parsons had a welcome to the NFL moment?”

    .

    .
Lenny gave him another one just in case.

  21. Dooley Says:

I for one am not worried about “if” Kancey can make his presence felt, I’m more concerned about how soon/when he can make his presence felt. The kid is a player, and it’s not just brawn as the little snippet he did with Baldinger on the beach just walking through how he leverages, moves, and counters with his hand work which pairs really well with the consistent motor he’s displayed on film. Pair that with a strong base, solid technique, and the talent he’s surrounded by no doubt in my mind we could be singing this kids praises before our early bye week.

  22. Larrd Says:

Very excited to see Kancey opening day. And Vea, Diaby, Ramirez, and even Shoyinka and Hall, who will be better. Lots of potential pass rush!

  23. Bucschamp Says:

I hope he do well. He does look good as a pass rusher but just average Vs the run. Just like AD, teams don’t fear running tru him. Sapp even said this. It’s going to be a challenge for him as our secondary is pretty good and teams like Atlanta just got better on the ground. He’s gonna need to work on his run d

  24. Michael Says:

    Hunters crack pipe. Lololol
    Wirfs pacaked parsons .
