“[Baker] Was Clearly The No. 1 Quarterback Here”

June 13th, 2023

Baker Mayfield

So a 12-year NFL general manager was at One Buc Palace today watching practice and scoring access with important Buccaneers and came away with a strong impression.

Former Vikings GM Rick Spielman was clear when speaking about Baker Mayfield: “I know they say there’s an open competition with [Kyle Trask,] but he was clearly the No. 1 quarterback here. And I think he will be very good in this offense, Dave Canales’ offense and how he’s operated today and what we saw [at practice].”

Spielman was there studying the Bucs for CBS Sports with CBS national NFL insider “Prickly” Pete Prisco.

Prisco agreed with Spielman, and Prickly Pete added that he’s confident Mayfield will play well this season as the starter.

Joe knows the Trask lovers/deniers won’t like this.

Opinions are like Aholes , everybody has one and most of them stink. Mayfields’ agent could have any number of NFL geeks shilling for him. Job will be won or lost by a QB performance on the field and anyone who tells you anything else is just that- a shill.

  2. Hodad Says:

Joe, I’m not a lover, or denier, but am pulling for Trask. That doesn’t mean I won’t be happy if Baker WINs the job, and the Bucs have success. I’m a Buc fan, whoever plays best I’ll support. I just think it’s silly trying to guess who that will be before the pads come on, and the real bullets begin flying. We really don’t know what Trask can do yet, but we do know Baker is on his 4th team. There has to be a reason for that.

  3. Duane Says:

Joe manages to continue insulting most of his readers with his juvenile taunting and continued false choice of Bucs fans either being a Mayfield realist or a Trask fanboy. Joe hasn’t insulted anyone, nor did Joe intend to. Most fans want both QBs to thrive, but there are those with firm, firm opinions. Joe doesn’t tell anyone how to be a fan. –Joe

Most Bucs fans are, well, you know, fans of the Bucs … meaning we want the Bucs to play well, no matter who is on the field.

This isn’t the 7th grade anymore Joe. We are not fanboys, we are not infantile chanters and propagandists for particular players. There are no heroes in sports any more – just players, some of whom play better than others.

Really, just give it up, Joe.

  4. Duane Says:

Last time I checked, neither of the media talking heads quoted here are either the Bucs GM or Head Coach, or the Offensive Coordinator. The only opinions that matter are theirs. Whoever wins the starting job is their choice … and likely, whoever wins the starters job is going to have a very short leash, and if there is any underperformance, will get yanked very quickly for the other. We’ve seen that over and over in the NFL. Not to mention, getting injured. Oh by the way, Mayfield lost his starters job at the Browns because he injured his shoulder and did not play well thereafter. It’s been a long time since he played a full season at 100%.

  5. Crickett Baker Says:

Bowles said there were several interceptions that he seemed to blame on the offense. What bugged me was that no one ever said which QB had those interceptions, nor who had the most. Did anyone see these?

  6. Truth be Told Says:

I have said it time and time again. The Bucs lucked out getting Baker Mayfield. He was smart enough to see the opportunity here to claim a starting job and take over a team for the next ten years. Great for him and the Bucs. He took Cleveland to the Playoffs!

  7. Bucsfan13 Says:

@Crickett. Well, Mayfield has the league in INTs the past five years. No one really wants to talk about it. He’s a gunslinger who’s not careful with the ball. He also has a fumbling problem. I have no doubt Baker will win the job. He signed with the team because he knew Trask wasn’t a real threat.

  8. Marine Buc Says:

    Let the best QB win…

Either way – if the Bucs start off 1-4 or worse there will probably be a change at the position.

I keep pounding the drum for the Bucs to sign another running back – D.Cook or K. Hunt would provide the necessary upgrade at the position. If the Bucs are seriously trying to win they need to upgrade.

  9. Cobraboy Says:

I am pulling for either one or both just explode with awesomeness this season.

I am for more focused on who will win games than who wins the QB competition.

I may be a minority by “pulling” for both. I hope the Bus’s O staff have sleepless nights parsing the QB excellence.

  10. johnnymoon Says:

As a Bucs fan since the beginning I do not care who get the QB job as long as the best QB gets it ..I just want to Win and will trust we go with who gives us the best chance to do that .As a fan I hope they both kick tail in the pre season and we have hard choice to make.

  11. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Yeah Baker took the 2020 Browns to the playoffs. The same Browns team that ranked 3rd in Rushing yards in the NFL at 4.8 yards per carry. So was it more Baker or plug in any stiff at QB and that team still goes to the playoffs with the runnig game they had???????????????

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Well…I guess that finalizes it…..now we can move on.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

  14. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    3-14 here we come.

    We’re on the clock.

  15. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

What is going to matter are the preseason games.

    Then we’ll talk.

    Until then it’s just bulls—

  16. unbelievable Says:

Did Jamies change his last name to Mayfield?

    😂 😂 😂

  17. K2 Says:

Joe…thanks for just reporting the news and not trying to make people happy. Tell us the good and the bad.

  18. The Dave Says:

If the pattern holds, we’ll see both QBS. Mayfield has been hurt almost every year he’s been in the league. So, most likely, we’ll see how well Trask can play with the 1s and on gameday.

  19. Trask To The Future Says:

YESSSSSS!!!! Because let’s root for us having wasted a 2nd round pick.

  20. sasquatch Says:

People get so triggered if Trask doesn’t get enough love. I mean, reality is that he was barely even a 2nd round pick (last pick), with major questions about his ability to succeed in the NFL. It should surprise nobody that Mayfield (1st pick of the draft) has shown more. It’s not unreasonable to project him as the starter. Time will tell, and nobody at OBP is giving up on Trask.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I would be happy if Mayfield does great…but surprised. I predict he will be out by game 6…and we’ll stick with Trask, win or lose, the rest of the season.

They basically has the same this year, there goes that theory.

  23. BillyBucco Says:

One thing I know is Baker has extra padding to absorb sacks.
Surely that is an advantage for this team.

  24. All_da_way Says:

I expected Mayfield to be ahead. To me what matters is during training camp and pre season when there is contact.

Trask has to show more moxie under pressure because we know that Mayfield can play sandlot football from a broken play.

  25. adam from ny Says:

baker def has moxie, but i just saw a really cool little black frenchie on ig that i really thought had a ton of moxie as well…

yes a little french bully with moxie

  26. Obvious Says:

Who are the guys Trask is throwing to? NEVER HEARD OF THEM. Seems Mayfield is throwing only to the ones/1st stringers. And Trask is throwing to??? It’s probably a miracle if any of the no name guys even make the team! Doesn’t sound like a fair “competition” to me…..

  27. Eric Says:

I’m sure they said the same thing in Carolina last year and just like that he went up in smoke!

  28. Infomeplease Says:

And this is just from today’s practice… KT threw 3 interceptions and a 4th was dropped!!!!! BM threw no interceptions!!! You may remember when DC said the starting qb job would be won by the qb that turns the ball over the least! i.e. protects the ball the best. By that standard BM won the day!!!!!
Sorry KT lovers, facts are facts!!!

  29. Bojim Says:

I like Trask but I like the Bucs better.

  30. Bucsfan13 Says:

@Eric. You’re exactly right. Look up when Baker first joined the Panthers last season. They raved about his “swagger.” They said he outplayed Darnold in camp by a mile. Basically the exact same thing is being said about Baker now. I’m not a fan of Trask, but the kid is getting such a raw deal. The whole competition thing is a complete farce. The coaches and players know it. Why isn’t Trask getting snaps with the first team? If it was true competition, Trask would be getting some first team snaps. Trask is being treated like a backup. Poor kid.

  31. Defense Rules Says:

Until someone comes up with proof to the contrary, I’ll give Dave Canales the benefit of the doubt when it comes to running a fair QB competition. On any given day, 1 guy may get better ‘opportunities’ than the other, but it’s the long-term that counts. Like Joe says, this is just underwear football. And heck, it’s just the 1st day that most of the likely starters were even out there.

I’m also convinced that both Canales & Bowles have a low tolerance for fumbling & interceptions. Those are drive-killers & very often lead to points … for the bad guys. Might be wrong, but I anticipate a LOT of close games this year. And in games like that, turnovers are very often the difference between winning & losing. Any QB has to be able to make plays, but we saw with Jameis what happens when a QB makes those plays for the other team. Ball security will play huge in the final decision.

  32. ghost Says:

trask is trash (on the field)

  33. Craig Says:

Mayfly did appear to get more reps today than Trask. Not a big deal, because he is in the dominant position, he has experience. It might not be good experience, but it is experience.

Tomorrow Trask will probably get more reps. On Day three Mayfly will get more reps. It still doesn’t matter in the long run, this is still underwear football and it matter less than preseason games.

What matters is everyone getting onto the same page. Unpredictable for a defense to try and fathom is the same for offensive players. Even the pros mostly played for Leftie last season.

This is a different beast and I just want to see improvement over the next couple of days.

  34. Duane Says:

Joe – stop being such an ax. OF COURSE YOU INSULTED MANY OF THE READERS OF YOUR RAG … by calling them “Trask lovers/deniers”.

I you don’t perceive that as an insult, then you are an idiot.

There are lots of Bucs fans who like Trask, lots of others who like Mayfield, still more who like both, and still more who like neither. All are Bucs fans.

I know you were a big fan of Jameis Winston – apparently you learned zilch about respect and humility from that extremely divisive era that pitted “Winston lovers” (primarily FSU partisans) against “Winston doubters” who were ultimately proved right.

What should matter vastly more than any personal fanboyism of one player or another is being a fan of the Bucs … and not searching and going out of one’s way to divide and set Bucs fans against each other. Which you are doing at JBF big time.

  35. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

I don’t care who wins the job as long as the Bucs win on the field

  36. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

    Someone’s a gator fan boi

  37. DingleBerry Says:

Message received Joe, you don’t want me commenting about just how awful Mayfield has been. “Me?” You have about a dozen mes.–Joe
Every time I break it down all my comments get deleted.

  38. firethecannons Says:

Look Baker is going to start and play till he is beat up then Trask should come in and clean up till Baker can take over again, both guys will get plenty of playing time. I predict Baker will get hurt at some point and Trask will be surprisingly efficient once he takes the reins.

  39. garro Says:

Keep pumping up the anti Trask volume Joe.

Mayfield worked with the ones today. As he has every Tuesday for all the OTAs.

So today was Trasks day with the twos and threes. I read this somewhere else.

But then again I’m not a so called expert ex NFL dude who who hasn’t done his homework and works for national media with a predetermined agenda.
What do I know about the Bucs.
    Go Bucs

  40. BucU Says:

If Trask spends ANOTHER year on the sidelines I think he’ll be out of football in 24. He’s just not very good.

  41. Oneilbuc Says:

I believe the city of Tampa cares more about their college teams than the bucs. Why does it matter so much if the quarterback comes from UF or FSU? We know which one of Joes that’s been anti Kyle Trask since the day he was drafted so I don’t know if he’s telling everything he seeing in practice. But this ain’t the only bucs page that’s doing that because this is a Baker Mayfield promotion for the bucs organization. That’s why you don’t hear anything about Baker Mayfield throwing 1 pick from any bucs site. You mean to tell me Baker Mayfield who let Sam Donald take his positions haven’t thrown 1 pick in all of camp? Lol 🤣🤣 the only thing they are doing to you guys is pumping up Baker Mayfield because it sounds good that he won the staring job so the fan base would get existed and they can sale more tickets. This ain’t no quarterback competition that’s why Trask is still practicing with 3rd and 4th strang players. According to Joe Baker Mayfield is our quarterback of the future the man haven’t thrown 1 pick since he’s been here but he calls it like he see it lol 🤣🤣 !! Baker Mayfield is the starter every one going into the first week.

  42. Gofortheface30 Says:

Just as predicted, periods are out in full force. It’s quite simple Trask fans: if your LIFE WAS ON THE LINE, who would you think ends up as the week one starter? It should take a half a second to make the determination. You are talking yourself in to things that you know are not true such as “open competition” (lol). Baker went in to McVays complex offense with no receivers and played outstanding. He had a pro bowl level season with Cleveland, he still has much more physical talent than trask and he is much MUCH more engaging personality wise and atleast moved the needle a little in terms of national interest. This is not close. Go talk to your therapist, get a refill on your medication and accept reality

  43. Oneilbuc Says:

Gof. Baker Mayfield is trash bro this is his 4th team in 6 years that should tell you something!! I don’t think it’s about being a Trask fan or Baker Mayfield everyone has seen Baker Mayfield and no one but you believes he’s a good quarterback. You brought up 1 game what happened in Carolina and the Panthers didn’t bring him in to tank he was brought in to help the team win and he sucked. So there goes your facts!!

  44. Gofortheface30 Says:

Accept reality O’Neil, go hug your teddy bear, get an emotional support dog, grab your favorite little blanket, have your boyfriend make you a cup of your favorite pumpkin spiced latte. I would you’re burying the lede but I’m not sure you’re smart enough to deflect from the overriding point. The actual POINT – is that whatever it is that’s cramping your vag about Baker (at no point did I suggest hes gd Patrick Mahomes or something) he is STILL a better option than Trask. He has exhibited actual ability to put together a full season and lead a team to the playoffs, and like it or not – he DID play well with the rams. THOSE are facts. He is not back with the rams because he has a chance to START now. How is that difficult to understand

Correct, and yours is not more right or important than anyone else’s. Maybe even less than some who have been in the business for years. I would bet so.

  47. ATLBuc Says:

16, 10, 51, 12, 16. These are the point totals for Mayfields games with the Rams.
50, 58, 82, 58, 62. These are his completion percentages in those games during which he had 4 TDS and 2 interceptions.
3,21,15, 16, 14, 16, 25 these were the total points Mayfield scored in Carolina while he threw 6 TDS and 6 INTERCEPTIONS
    WHO WANTS THIS?!!
