Baker Mayfield Channels Gerald McCoy

June 30th, 2023

Boys just wanna have fun.

Maybe it is an Oklahoma thing?

There probably aren’t two football players more different than Baker Mayfield and Gerald McCoy. About the only similarities are each played at Oklahoma and both were early first-round draft picks and wore a Bucs uniform.

So it was odd for Joe to read words from Mayfield where he seems to be using the old GMC rallying cry.

“Let’s have fun!”

For whatever reason, folks have a stick up their backsides for GMC. Joe never understood the hate. It wasn’t like the guy was Albert Haynesworth.

Once in a pregame circle and where some players try to get teammates ready to play — Devin White is exceptional with this (#SarcasmAlert) — GMC ordered his teammates to “Just have fun” and “Let’s have fun.”

For reasons not fully clear, this enraged GMC’s legion of haters.

In an article typed by Belle Fraser of the New York Post, Mayfield seemed to be taking a page from GMC by saying he will be an improved quarterback this year because when he joined the Rams last season, he made a concerted effort to have fun again.

“It was the first time I had fun playing football in a few years,” Mayfield said of his time with the Rams during a media call prior to some damn golf outing.

“It brought that feeling of having that success and really remembering what it was all about, Kind of hit the reset button for me.”

So there you have it. The pressure of being labeled as a savior for a sorry organization like Cleveland and putting up with the BS of a dumpster fire in Carolina, Mayfield is free of all that.

He’s free to have fun again.

Hopefully, Mayfield having fun works out better than when GMC just wanted to have fun. There wasn’t much fun about losing week after week after week during the Lost Decade.

GMC lost me when apolized to Big Ben on MNF; but he’s since won me back with his unwavering loyalty to the Bucs.

  2. Hodad Says:

Just don’t start wearing a Komno.

  3. Da Bucs Guy Says:

Does this mean dance party’s in the locker room after losses again?

  4. bucnjim Says:

Dancing around and laughing it up while we were down 27-3 in the first half? Yes he was so much fun to watch!

  5. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Does this mean laughing it up on the sidelines during a blowout loss?

  6. shankasorous Says:

Saying “Let’s have fun!” in the locker room isn’t moxie … it’s Super Moxie! /s

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You really can’t have a lot of fun if you lose

  8. BA’s Red Pen Says:

The 3 biggest GMC fans on earth are Gerald, Joe, and Gerald’s mom.

  9. PanthersSuck! Says:

Cats going to do alright here. Looking for to it!

  10. Lt. Dan Says:

Who can forget the most idiotic pregame talk…EVER? “Eat a W”.

  11. Winky Says:

McCoy was given the impossible job of being the face of the losing franchise.
Turning the franchise was bigger than any one player.

Dude did his best. Much respect and admiration for Gerald.

    Baker Who? We’ll see

    Go Bucs!!!

  12. D-Rome Says:

The only thing GMC did wrong is that he wasn’t Warren Sapp. That’s it.

  13. 1#bucsfan Says:

Even if GMC was a warren sapp type in the losing decade do y’all really think he alone or alone with LVD we would have won more games? NOT AT ALL it takes a whole team to win games not just 1 or 2 players. I’m not mad at GMC for dancing and having fun while we’re losing. Football is a team sport and if the whole team sucks then you still gotta make your job fun some how. That’s prob why some of y’all are so miserable at work.

  14. buccanstopit Says:

Is Baker going to start channeling Batman costumes, to add to his moxie?

  15. Tampamac Says:

Amen Winky and D-Rome.. Dude left it on the field. Played hard between the whistles. Had the misfortune of being drafted after Suh, playing the same position as one of the greatest Bucs of all time, and suffering through one of the worst stretches of QB play in franchise history.. Wasn’t a fan of him helping opponents up, but that’s who he is. You’re not gonna change a grown man’s character.

  16. CrackWise Says:

Let’s not forget GMC also had the pleasure of playing for some of the greatest coaches in NFL history! So great that they are all have BUST in the Hall of Shame!

GMC was never the problem, he was just the only name anyone could remember

  17. Infomeplease Says:

Joe, does anyone really understand DW when he’s trying to rally the team before a game?
He’s screams out illegible gibberish stuff!!! I blame him for the playoff loss to the Ram’s, because of that!! Several deffensive players were quoted post game that they didn’t know the play call! That’s DW’s job to relay the play call on field!! Just sayin’

  18. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Not even close to the same I’d bet bakers never apologized for making a play

  19. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

My bad Ben soft as baby shizz

    ____________

Replace Softie’s mom with Sir Rodney Munch.
He absolutely adores him some Gerald.

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  21. Mike S Says:

White Boy Summer is back on bros!

(Checks it down to the back)

  22. sasquatch Says:

Like Dave Canales says (paraphrasing), “If it’s not fun then why are we doing this? It ought to be fun.”

  23. stpetebucfan Says:

Mayfield has better teammates than GMC ever had. It’s an unfair competition.

GMC was a great player…Mayfield is only ‘a guy who showed SOME success”.

Having fun is a great thing and a wonderful motivator. Think Jordan didn’t have FUN dunking and draining threes on all those guys?

  24. RustyRhinos Says:

McCoy was never a bad player, he just never took over any game I watched him play in Tampa. I did lose all my GAF about him when he “Finally feels at home in Carolina” after he did not get another Buccaneer bag full of his liking of doubloons. McCoy looks like a good guy, a great father, and would be a good person to hang out with. I just do not feel he was as great as he thinks he was on the field. When did McCoy ever sac a QB more than once in any game? Has he ever harassed a QB like Suh did Rodgers, and Sapp did Farve?
Hey, Gerald Carolina is on the phone… feel free to support them with those family, down-home feelings you have there.

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  25. Rod Munch Says:

GRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ME…… ANGRY…… GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO MENTION MCCOY OR ME ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!! SOFT!!!!! GRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. garro Says:

Hope he, all of his team-mates and all Bucs fans have alot of fun this season. Assuming he is the starter… Comparing him to GMC? Come on man!

    Go Bucs

  27. Cobraboy Says:

“In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is be king.”

Which describes McCoy’s tenure in the Bucs’ hidden decade…

I’d rather Mayfield “channel” someone else.

  28. Arians4President Says:

    GMC critics,

McCoy was a d@mn good football player. Just because he does not check all of your boxes, doesn’t change that.

  29. Nybuccguy Says:

An intense focused fun is fine. Gerald was having childish fun

  30. Tap-Out Says:

You (people) G Mcoy haters really get on my nerves …the man played on ‘teams’ that had very little chance to win games …that was his and his teammates only weakness, they couldn’t win! On his on he is a HOF’er …argue with your mammy, his Pro Bowl appearances says what type of player he was, so he wasn’t a great leader…not every great player is but (you people) sit around talking about rah rah speeches and apologetic statements made while on the field, some of you guys would be savages on the field until you have a 245 pound man running up up your chest with a 300 pound man pounding on your head! He may not have been the best but he damn sure wasn’t as bad as (you people) would like to make him to be!

  31. garro Says:

    Well put Tap-Out.

I don’t think many of the McCoy bashers have ever played any sport on a competitive level.

    Go Bucs!

  32. Cobraboy Says:

McCoy was the tallest midget on those teams.

He was OK, but not the world-beater casuals want to believe.

I kept waiting for Mr. Softee to live up to his hype, and it never happened.
