What Is “Not So Happy” About The Bucs?

May 9th, 2023

What did he mean?

Really, really, really strange choice of words typed by one of the deans of NFL sportswriting.

Yesterday, Mother Jones-readingairport-pianist-listening, Twitter-revolting, Purdue-basketball-confused, combine-fatigued, Bavarian-pretzel-chomping, teeth-brushing, haircut-fascinated, Circa-bewildered, elf-rattled, green-lawns-frowning, soggy-socks-wearing, Daylight-Savings-Time-scared, crossword-puzzle-puzzled, Elon-Musk-peeved, Barstool-Sports-triggered, almond-milk-sipping, hot-dog-eating-contest-protesting, mock-draft-scowlingL.L.-Bean-wearing, tennis fans’ advocate, Second Amendment abolitionistMike-Florio-arguingparrot-insensitivechewing-with-his-mouth-opensoup-gulpingCalifornia-train-romancing, anti-football proliferationouthouse-admiringairline-nappingsteerage-flyingYogi Berra-worshipingurinal-picture-takingvideo-game-playingTaylor-Swift-listeningpickpocket-thwartingBucs-uniform-frowning, Allie LaForce-smitten, Big-Ten-Network-hatingpedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerking, craft-beer-chugging, cricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïvebaseball-box-score-readingNPR-honkfilthy-hotel-stayingfight-instigatingbarista-training, Budweiser-tolerantbaseball-scorecard-keeping, pasta-feasting, vomit-dodging scrooge, Kay-Adams-following, Coors-Light-souring, pineapple-upside-down-cake-eating, Concrete Mixer-spilling,  social activist and NFL insider Peter King, of NBC Sports fame, decided to type random thoughts on various NFL teams in the wake of last month’s draft in his “Football Morning in America” column.

Strangely, King suggested the Bucs are not stoked in early May. He did not explain why.

King, without any clarification, wrote of the Bucs and the Cardinals and the Texans’ state of mind:

Arizona, Tampa Bay, Houston … not so happy.”

What did King mean by that?

Was King speaking of the teams’ fanbases? Is he suggesting the Bucs are mad at the outcome of their draft picks (if the Bucs are mad about their own draft, well, that is simply absurd — they only need to look in the mirror, who the hell was drafting for them, Dave Wannstedt?).

Joe has a hard time believing Houston is upset with its draft. The Texans got a quarterback and a pass rusher in their first two picks. That’s a home run by any stretch. Unless the Houston shot-callers are claiming Houston owner Cal McNair forced them to pick C.J. Stroud.

Are the Bucs not sleeping at night knowing the team likely will take it up the poop chute for not having Tom Brady this year?

Maybe King was referencing his team rankings. which came later in the column a nd had Arizona, Tampa Bay and Houston as the three worst teams in NFL? If King is right about that, well, prepare to embrace Caleb Williams in Tampa Bay a year from now.

Just a really, really weird choice of words without specifics or details to explain why the Bucs are “not happy.”

Are the Bucs peeved they missed out on an offensive tackle?

Stephen King? has always hated the Bucs. He is just a huge (literally) Dork!
i have not read his garbage in years, not worth wasting my time.
who cares what he craps out?

  2. firethecannons Says:

Who cares what peter king said what specific word used, he is an old man and the newer guys are much more adept at breaking down the players, dtafts, team fit. Peter King is about as relevant as mike florio–the gossip master. Both of them are desperate for any story even if they have to make one up.

  3. ATLBuc Says:

These talking heads don’t know anything about anything. What has Atlanta the Saints and Carolina done to make them so much better than us? I really don’t understand all of the skepticism. If it’s a matter of not having TB12, I would say that TB12 was part of the problem last year. I think Leftwich listened to him too much

  4. Da Bucs Guy Says:

Todd Bowles will be fired at the end of this season. The Bucs will be drafting in the top 5. It will be a very long and ugly season.

  5. Hodad Says:

Atlbuc, or Leftwich didn’t listen to Brady enough .

  6. Leopold Stotch Says:

Meh. I’m just eager to see what this team has with Trask, the new players, new coaches, scheme, so on and so forth. There’s a lot to look forward to. Life without Brady, will be different. Certainly will get some lumps, but I’m excited to see what’s going to happen next. Got 4 more months to go.

  7. Kalind Says:

My read was they weren’t going to be happy seeing where he put them on his list

  8. JeffreyLane77 Says:

Um… I’m peeved Tampa missed out on an offensive tackle. The offensive line talentwise hasn’t been improved over last year. And last years O-line was downright bad. Moving Wirfs to LT fills one need but creates another. Whoever replaces Wirfs at RT isn’t going to be an upgrade. So even if Wirfs is successful moving to LT. The move doesn’t make the O-line better. It just fills an immediate need. I thought the idea was if a LT wasn’t there at 19 draft the BPA. Then move Wirfs out of necessity and draft a RT in rd2. That didn’t happen. We lost Donovan Smith moved Wirfs to replace Smith. Now we have to replace Wirfs at RT. Which is impossible because he’s the best RT in the NFL.

Jensen is coming off an injury. He opted to go the physical
therapy/rehab route instead of having surgery. I’m betting he misses at least a couple games due to injury and probably plays banged up all year.

The only thing this O-line has going for it improvement wise is Canales. Hopefully Canales can get creative with blocking schemes so this offensive line thrives. It would be nice to have a run game that’s not predictable for starters.

  9. Joe Says:

Moving Wirfs to LT fills one need but creates another.

    Thank you!

  10. SufferingSince76 Says:

If he didn’t explain why the Bucs aren’t happy, then his article fails basic Journalism 101.

  11. SB~LV Says:

Maybe it’s because of the cowardice leadership in the front office.
JL never addressed the fanbase at the end of the season with a summation and mission statement going forward. Not a peep about his plans and vision for the team in rebuild and cap recovery mode . Not even a whistle as he passes the grave yard.
This has not gone unnoticed by the fans and out of town sports writers.

  12. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

    Ffs relax

  13. ATLBuc Says:

Hodad! They were supposedly close. So I doubt if they were not on the same page. The reason TB12 probably got BA fired is because he had little influence on the game plan. The problem with last season was that BA was not there with his red sharpie scratching out the plays they ran.

  14. Tiny Dungy Says:

Napoleon Dynomite is pictured here. Does that mean Bucs are going to ask Uncle Rico to be the 3rd QB?

  15. #99 the Big fella Says:

Peter king? Never heard of her!

  16. Jeff Says:

Lol! Peter King doesn’t know sh*t about our Yucs! This is a solid 6 win team! King wants to pretend that 2 wins is the ceiling. Bucs are just good enough to miss out on a top 3 draft pick. 2023 – 2033 is the 2nd decade of despair. True Yucs fans realize this.

I’m sorry that Jason Licht somehow hurt your feelings…Are you Goatfarmer’s sister?

  18. Geno711 Says:

    Agree with Jeffrey Lane.

The OL was our biggest problem last year. I am ridiculously worried about Jensen being healthy this year from rehab with no surgery. We will see.

Wirfs may be capable of playing left tackle just as good but certainly do not want to rely on Goedeke because of one solid game at right tackle last year.

I hope that Jeffrey Lane and I are wrong on the offensive line.

  19. Letsbucinggo Says:

Should have picked Harrison in round 1 and a safety in round 2 and signed a FA tackle to alternate with Vita. Shouldn’t have paid Vea 17 mil a year for playing 55% of the defensive snaps.

  20. Steven007 Says:

LV, since when is the GM obligated to give a press conference that apparently you and you alone approve as a summary of the season with his plan and vision moving forward? Much less an actual mission statement. Joe himself has noted several times now that JL has been communicating with the press more often than he ever has in the past recently. Not good enough for you? Well I guess that’s tough sh!t.

  21. SB~LV Says:

    Well parity in JBF
Joe in Michigan and 007 each have one of JL’s testes in their mouths

  22. August 1976 Buc Says:

No joy in Mudville…. The mighty Casey has struck out

Ok lets start with the Head Coach.
How long is Bowles actually going to coach this team??
He has now shown what his teams play like by putting listless teams on the field now in 2 different cities.

To think that even with Brady, they played like a train wreck most of the time. If Brady does not pull 4 games out of his azz at the end of games, the Bucs would have only won a total of 4 games for the season.
The beatdown to Dallas in Tampa, was a microcosm of the season. They played like expected by many fans, including me. Leopards do not change their spots, and neither did the Bucs, they played a normal version of the Bucs 2022 football in the playoff game.
Week after week of listless looking, mistake prone football.
This team needs a new talent cycle and a head coach that can build a winner. Bowels is a decent Defensive coordinator, but as a head coach, no, he is not the answer.

  23. SB~LV Says:

    Yep ! August 76
    and
    Who
    What
    Why
    When
was/ is allowed to be the head coach
    Look there boys and girls
Bowles should have been fired during the buy week but the fix was in for the 2023 season and he has been given the opportunity to play the dead man walking role, a sad reflection on Bowles and the FO
    Misery is nigh

  24. Allen Lofton Says:

    Peter King is a has-been

  25. ocala Says:

Everyone but the Bucs own fan base thinks the Bucs are not going to have a good team this year. The Bucs do have a very talented roster, but unfortunately when you have a bad head coach and no QB most people will think you will not have a good team.

  26. Steven007 Says:

Posters who don’t have anything else always go for the insult. And as far as insults go, that one brought me back to sixth grade. Well done!

Better yet, what did I say that was actually debatable since you didn’t try to debate? @LV

  27. frankbucsfan Says:

maybe Joe should learn the same lesson most of us did about King years ago, he is a blowhard that needs no real info to open his mouth and blpwviate the clean air!!

  28. Mike C Says:

Yeah LV, weird obsession with that JL addressing the season….. simmer down bro.

  29. Mike Says:

The team doesn’t give two figs about how Peter King ranked them. Of course they wanted an OT and may not be happy with how the draft fell, but I wouldn’t say they aren’t happy overall with the results, as they stuck to their board and got quality players through just about every round in the draft, plus a few quality prospects as UDFA’s.

  30. Goatfarmer Says:

The fat guy knows who the Bucs Headcoich is. So do we.

  31. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Bucs could have easily addressed the Tackle position by offering more to NE.
Steelers gave up pick 17 and pick 120 to move up and take LT Broderick Jones who was widely regarded as one of the best if not the best LT in the draft. So for anyone to suggest there was NOT opportunity to draft a LT that would be ready to start on day one is just ignorant , the Bucs chose to NOT draft a LT , but they could have certainly.

  32. reddington neck shores Says:

peter kings main assessment last year was that the bucs o-line was going to keep brady hurried and inconsistent. at the time i was like go drink a starbucks oat milk latte bro, but lo and behold he was right

  33. Destinjohnny Says:

How can u not be excited about our new left
    Tackle…

  34. SB~LV Says:

007 … sweet irony or sweet ignorance. I only responded to insults

  35. Irishmist Says:

Never trust a white guy sporting an afro.

  36. Steven007 Says:

LV, week sauce with that word salad bro. Be better.

  37. Curse of Gruden Says:

That guy used to be on Welcome Back Kotter! “Up your nose with a rubber hose!!!”

  38. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I agree that the Bucs could have drafted a left tackle. But did anyone notice how close Bowles was sitting to Licht ?
I think Bowles would have beat his ass if he did not draft all the defensive players maybe ?

  39. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Peter Likes to hear himself talk. Bucs will have a better Oline this year with more depth and a more mobile QB. The defense will be younger and faster. The only negative is that Bowles is still the HC. He’ll be sending out the kicker to try 58 yd field goals and coaching not to win.

  40. Infomeplease Says:

Tampa will be happy when, perhaps as soon as mid season, Todd Bowles is replaced as Head coach!

  41. Bosch Says:

It’s Peter king. He doesn’t know what he meant either.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

Infomeplease…the Glazers never fire coaches in mid-season.

Imagine Caleb Williams as a Buc….ahhhhhh.

I want to find out….tank if you have to. j/k

I suspect that they won’t have to tank…

    Go Bucs!!!(Get Caleb)

  43. Geno711 Says:

In the archives there is an article the morning of the 2020 draft where Peter King says that he has insider information, and the Bucs are going to take a cornerback in the 1st or 2nd round.

That draft, the Bucs took no cornerback.

I think Peter Kings mind or insider information was on the decline then. Not sure why we would think his takes have improved in the last three years.

  44. Alanbucsfan Says:

For those of you who have no faith in Mayfield or Trask-
McVay heaped praise on Mayfield’s time in LA, but the Rams have Stafford and his $160 million deal… no chance for Mayfield to start.
As for the Panthers and Browns- Panthers got rid of all their QB’s from last year, and Darnold may be the 49ers starter this year – and the Browns rolled the dice on a weirdo…
As for Trask, no one knows yet. He’s likely a quality career backup, but we’ll see.
But this “embrace” Caleb Williams nonsense is silly.

  45. Craig Says:

It all depends on if one of our QBs can make something happen. It is not all about the draft.

  46. Larrd Says:

Goedeke can play RT, I heard. The line will be okay, and improving as time goes on, IMO. More mobile and athletic as a group.

  47. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

Yeah he means team strength it sounds like. Oddsmakers have the Bucs pretty low in the rankings, hence his comment I imagine.

  48. SlyPirate Says:

Joe’s obviously a big admirer or fascinated by Peter King. He writes an article on everything the guy says about the Bucs.

As Bucs fans, we don’t put a lot of stock into the general columnist. They cover every team and every sport, so they typically don’t know as much about the Bucs as we do. The only guys that are worth anything are the rumor/breaking news columnists.

  49. Larrd Says:

Peter King is a man who believes he has interesting takes on oatmeal.

  50. Simeon97 Says:

comment strictly basd on his rankings. It’s hard to argue an 8 win team without the goat winning more than 5-6 games.

  51. Lord Cornelius Says:

Seemed like a real lazy way basically to say “these teams suck imo and I’m not going to even elaborate on why”

  52. Tye Says:

The absolute WORST thing about the Bucs – Todd Bowles as HC!

  53. Esteban85 Says:

Let’s all gather round and speculate over the words of the NFL’s most egregious speculator. Who cares what this old fart is pumping out. He and Florio ruined themselves over Brady & Bucs hate.

  54. Vlad The Impaler Says:

You guys think Brady will ever come back?

  55. Vlad The Impaler Says:

The fact that PK is wealthy and successful shows the HUGE unfairness and entitlement and nepotism in our society

  56. Vlad The Impaler Says:

This guy is a rambling idiot. He really has the personality of a homeless man w dementia yet he’s wealthy?

  57. ScottyMack Says:

You’re really reaching for something to write about, Joe, when a generic, cryptic statement made by Peter King becomes the subject for a post.

  58. Goatfarmer Says:

Vlad, in fairness, some homeless men with dementia are hilarious. Their incoherent ramblings aside.

Peter King has never even accidentally forced a crevasse of a smile on my gnarled visage.

  59. garro Says:

Joe My Hard Drive rejected your latest nickname for King.
Says one terabyte is too big. Suggested KingDong.

  60. garro Says:

That pic reminds me of the jackass I beat up in high school.

  61. Gman Says:

He ain’t wrong. Nothing to look forward to this season as we settle back into awfulness.
