Todd Bowles Identifies The Three Schedule Factors That Interest Him

May 12th, 2023

Details.

Weeks 5, 8 and 15 got the full attention of the Buccaneers head coach when the NFL schedule was released yesterday.

Todd Bowles explained after rookie camp practice today that he’s focused on preparation, and the weeks that require special care.

“The first thing I look for is where the bye week is (Week 5) and the second thing is how many cold games we’ve got in December,” Bowles said. “So, obviously, we’ve got Green Bay in December (Week 15); you prepare for that one. Then you kind of see the turnaround from the Sunday to the Thursday game (Week 8 in Buffalo) to see what you’ve got to prepare for early. And you look at those three things and that’s about it.”

Joe sort of likes the early bye week for this edition of the Bucs. A later bye is more about rest, but for a young team with an early-October bye, the time off is more about deeper study and signficant changes or adjustments.

For the Week 8 Buffalo game on short rest (Thursday night), coaches typically start doing their homework in the summer so preparation isn’t as hectic.

As for getting the team to play in Green Bay in mid-December, Joe’s not sure anything can be done other than extra air conditioners and fans being installed in the Glazer Shed. And perhaps everyone can chug an avocado Slurpee before practice that week?

I kind of get what you’re saying about the early bye week being good for a team in transition… but I still don’t like it. Early bye weeks (weeks 4 – 6) are given to teams that the league doesn’t expect / want to be competitive.

It’s one of the biggest FUs to any organization, IMO.

That’s why outside of the Brady years, the Bucs have repeatedly and routinely had very early bye weeks. Don’t believe me?

    2010: Week 4 bye
    2012: Week 5 bye
    2013: Week 5 bye
    2014: Week 7 bye
    2015: Week 6 bye
    2016: Week 6 bye
2017: No bye week at all
    2018: Week 5 bye
    2019: Week 7 bye

7 out of 10 years, our bye week was week 6 or earlier. Absolutely ridiculous!

(Contrast with Brady- when our bye weeks were week 13, week 9 and week 11)

And now in 2023, we’re back to our usual week 5 bye again lol.

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

Good news is that the Bucs will be totally unprepared all season so no need for anything special. Bloweszo, a talented clownster . Makes you cry when you want to laugh, makes you laugh when you should cry.

  3. Joe in Michigan Says:

Goatfarmer: “THERE’S NO WAY THE BUCS COULD EVER WIN A GAME WITH BLOWZO THE COACH AS COACH!!!!!!!!!!!! 😭😢😭😢😭😢😭😢😭”

Uh, the Bucs have made the playoffs THE LAST 3 YEARS with Bowles as a coach. Don’t let facts get in the way of your feelings, you internet clown.

  4. Jack Clark Says:

    Avocado Slurpee? 🤢

  5. HC Grover Says:

Bowles is preparing for 3 games. Is he a Boy Scout? Be Prepared…..To get out of town fast!

  6. Knucknbuc Says:

Lmaooo good find unbelievable. Back to the dregs the bucs go.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Speaking of bye weeks, I still don’t get why the NFL hasn’t gone back to it’s 1993 model and put in two bye weeks. You get an extra week of TV out of the deal, and players get an extra week off. As a fan I would love that, as an extra week of Redzone would be awesome to have.

When they go to 18 weeks, you almost certainly assume they’ll have 2 bye weeks.

  8. William Walls Says:

    I’m with you, Rod.

  9. Hammerhead Says:

Fortunately all of the bucs opponents have issues too.

  10. Costa Rica John Says:

I don’t know why the NFL doesn’t take two weeks in the middle of the season and do the bye weeks for all teams. Half the teams off on each week.
It would be more fair to everyone.

  11. Goatfarmer Says:

One season as Bucs headless coich. With Tom Brady. Loser.

Turns 14-5 into 8-10. Worst running game in NFL history. Tom Brady at QB.

Four consecutive losing seasons as headless coich. Soon to be five. Averages > 30 ppg allowed against playoff teams.

Yeah, Johore in Michigan. You’re a real bright one.

Tell us again how Tom Brady was over the hill in 2020. I can post it again. Genius stuff.

  12. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

I wish that the bye weeks were in week 8 for half the league and week 9 for the other half and then we’d be done with them and it would be fair.

  13. Buc4evr Says:

Race to the bottom of the NFC South. The Bucs will be in total disarray on the O and will be lucky to score 17 points a game. New offense coupled with a new O-line, two QBs that will make a lot of mistakes and a HC that makes terrible in game decisions. The early bye won’t help this team, they will need a lot more than a few adjustments. At least the Bucs get to wear creamsicle uniforms just like 1976. Lol.

  14. BigMacAttack Says:

I not thinking about doom and gloom here. I like our chances to win the South. Todd Bowles system works with enough speed and players staying on point. We saw it during the Super Bowl run. Our defense just needs to get back to that. I like the draft and how that went and I see good things coming and no tanking for first pick.

  15. BigMacAttack Says:

So put me in the minority lol. Can I get reparations for all the losing seasons we had?

  16. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    BigMacAttack Says:

I’m not thinking about doom and gloom here.

Yes, it’s called “denial”. It’s the 1st of five stages – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

Denial ain’t a river in Egypt, bro.

  17. Vlad The Impaler Says:

The gloom and doom people have at least made it to stage four. I’m proud to say I’m at Stage 5…..but it doesn’t leave much to look forward to.

  18. Da Bucs Gut Says:

Best part of the schedule will be week 9, when we all will discuss who the next head coach will be.

  19. HC Grover Says:

If Bowles prepares for a game…we lose.

  20. WVBuc Says:

    Is this a young team?

  21. Goatfarmer Says:

Maybe that’s it. Bloweszo only prepares for 3 games.

  22. Voice of Truth Says:

Todd just seems to be off in most of his assessments- in game, personnel, OC’s, STC, travel planning – he just makes bad decisions over and over and over again

The FO has set the table with more than most thought they would get while being buried in deferred cap money.

I hope in year 6 the light comes on for Todd, but smart money says 6-11 with him in charge – just like practice today / start with juice and quickly spiral into the abyss

  23. Vancouver Buc Says:

He won’t have to worry about Green Bay in week 15, he’ll be long gone by then.

  24. MadMax Says:

    Just to mention:

“Todd Bowles will walk with Mount St. Mary’s Class of 2023 to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in youth and community development, 37 years after leaving Temple to pursue a professional football playing career.”

Its a new day folks, lets give him a chance…and trust me i know for us critics its hard, and its gonna be a bad year, 7 wins maybe, but lets see what happens.

  25. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    Bowles not wrong here

  26. Letsbucinggo Says:

One thing the Bucs are number 1 is the worse head coach in the NFL! Tom Brady as your quarterback you still have a losing season.

  27. garro Says:

I’m the eternal optimist this time of year. So you guys are peeing in my Wheaties. LOL
Can’t wait for real practice and games!
We are gonna win the South and beat the piss out of NO twice! Offensive player of the week for Trask in both those contests.
Hows that for peeing in all of your Wheaties?
    🙂

  28. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

I bet bunch of y’all Debbie downers kick your dogs too ffs get some sunshine

  29. Destinjohnny Says:

I think if the coach had a good roster he would be okay

  30. Goatfarmer Says:

Glad Bloweszo finished his degree. It will help him in his pending hamster and gerbil career after his 3-9 start to the 2023 season.

  31. Letsbucinggo Says:

Goatfarmer Caleb Williams come on down!

  32. unbelievable Says:

    Lotta negative Nancies around here.

I think we’re headed towards another 9-8 or 8-9 season, personally.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

    5 wins tops!

  34. Goatfarmer Says:

Bloweszo will give away a bunch of winnable games like he did last year. 5 wins is the upper boundary limit.

  35. Stormy Says:

If he coaches gutlessly like he did last year, the only thing he needs to be researching are moving trucks and packing services.

  36. orlbucfan Says:

Hey goathead, did a goat kick your brains out? Sure sounds like it, and BTW, I’m glad Brady is h-i-s-t-o-r-y as in gone! Man, did he stink up the joint last year!! Looking forward to this year and seeing what we have in Trask and Bowles. Hurry up August! Hopefully, no category 6s as in hurricanes this season, how about it, football gods and Mother Nature!?!

  37. Fred McNeil Says:

Yeah, please no storms this year. Our power goes out if we just blow out birthday candles too hard. Last year our power went out and our son’s house flooded. They have four kids and the total was 10 people and three dogs. His two dogs are HUGE and bad mannered.

  38. Allbuccedup Says:

Did not know Bowles didn’t have a college degree that explains his lack of ability as a head coach.

    ^^^^^^^^
Do you honestly think someone needs a college degree to be a good football coach?
