Pete Prisco’s “Best Pick” For Bucs

May 4th, 2023

Bucs rookie guard Cody Mauch.

So prickly Pete Prisco of CBS Sports has thoughts on the Bucs draft. Prisco never says anything without conviction if not passion. And never is Prisco without an opinion.

So his best selection by Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was his first pick on Day 2 of the draft. And that would be North Dakota State offensive lineman Cody Mauch.

Best Pick: Second-round pick Cody Mauch is a nasty player who will step in and likely be a starter at guard. He was a college tackle, but he is more guard than tackle in my mind. That line will be happy he’s around.

Will the offensive line be happier than Baker Mayfield, who may need all the help he can get as he tries to prove his career is worth salvaging?

Yes, “nasty” is certainly a trait Lichts seeks in offensive linemen, no doubt.

Now, when Licht used the words “right now” to describe Mauch as a guard, was Licht hinting Mauch’s stay there is only temporary? “This Joe” easily could see the Bucs grooming Mauch to take over for center Ryan Jensen someday.

Honestly, from what I’ve seen to date of this Valhallan Viking. I think he could play anywhere on the O-line. I do suspect he may catch more than one TD pass in his career.

Here is where the Delusional really kicks in. Your new starting TE. GronkMauch?

I feel for Cody in a way The media made such a focus on his teeth I bet he thinks “Man, I got poked in school sometimes and after breaking a ton of backs and eating a bunch of pancakes I thought I left all that behind, low and behold the press is doing it too. What a disgrace in my opinion.

So, the Hainsey at C experiment didn’t go as planned?

  5. Leopold Stotch Says:

He did OK. The problem was he was following Jensen and that’s a tough act to follow. There was no nasty. I’m not giving up on Hainsey, but he doesn’t have the nasty like Jensen does.

  6. Hodad Says:

He is defeinately going to take over for Jensen down the road. I wasn’t high on the kid when first drafted, because I didn’t know he could play across the line. Bucs needed a tackle, but I thought drafting a center this year wasn’t a bad idea. Cody looked good at center during the senior bowl.

I like the versatility……..guard, tackle, extra tackle, tackle eligible, even lining up as a TE…….
We have some versatility with Hainsey & Goedeke also…..good depth with Leverette & Stinnie…..

  8. Mark Says:

Every projected ol depth chart and conversation seems to ignore that Hainsey started all last year at center and was decent. He should be in the mix for one of the guard spots. Either the Bucs didn’t think he was as serviceable as he seemed or these writers don’t go very in-depth.

Let’s hope Jensen stays healthy this year and we don’t have to find out right away if the kid would be a decent center. Hainsey played the entire year there and although there were issues at times he did improve. He is no Ryan Jensen but after another offseason adding some strength and a year of live action under his belt I would imagine Hainsey would be a good center. Let Mauch play guard if he can win the job and see what we really have. If the Tristen Wirfs experiment at left tackle and Goedeke at right tackle work out we could have a really good run blocking line. Not so sure about pass pro though.

I think people just like his picture.

I miss seeing Marpet out in front of a sweep or screen. It would be even cooler with the red hair. Or maybe he’d be better next to a more comfortable Goedeke at RT. Hainsey is going to be okay, plus or minus, anywhere. I like Leverette and Stinnie and Walton, too. Seems like the old Shanahan Broncos offensive lines, even if Jensen can’t make it back all the way.

The defensive front seven is going to be fun, too. If I didn’t mistrust Bowles so much, I’d be on the bandwagon, big time!

I want some side by sides of Mauch and Jensen and their flowing red locks. That will be some hilarious photography.

  13. Hodad Says:

Mauch, Jensen, Ko Kief coming at you. Be like a Viking siege!

  14. Brandon Says:

Hainsey was a 10X better center in his second year as a pro than Jensen was. Jensen wasn’t even a full-time starter in the NFL until his 4th season. He is still the likely the front runner for the RG position and top backup C.

Whenever I see that picture I can’t help but think of the bar fight scene in “Hooper”!
