Jason Licht: Bucs Eyeing Veteran Quarterback Who “Has Been There Done That”

May 2nd, 2023

Bucs QB Kyle Trask.

Buccaners general manager Jason Licht said today “there were a couple of quarterbacks” on his radar to draft last week but the draft didn’t shake out for the Bucs to get one.

Licht added the QB targets were “not necessarily high” draft picks.

Licht delivered the insight on WDAE radio and added that the Bucs will now move to adding a veteran QB.

“Right now we like the competition that’s going on with Baker [Mayfield] and Kyle [Trask], couldn’t be happier with the way it’s going right now, just both of them getting ready to go into training camp,” Licht said.

“…But we do have a plan. We probably would like to bring in a vet. Just somebody that has been there done that and can be in that room with them, not necessarily somebody that we think is going to take over the competition. But somebody that can just add to that room. We’ve got a few options that we’re keeping in mind.”

Joe wrote in detail yesterday about the Bucs pursuing a veteran QB. That’s what Todd Bowles wants.

Keep an eye on Trevor Siemian, 31, the former Broncos, Jets, Bears and Saints quarterback who has made 30 career starts.

I’m sure whoever wins will do great.. either baker wins and hopefully secures a fat contract like Geno, or Trask wins and he’s the future.. either way I’m sure we’ll be fine, im leaning towards baker, seems safer

  2. jimmy Says:

What competition??? Who stretches their groin better in offseason conditioning?

This obsession with selling fans that Kyle Trash is an NFL starter and the team didn’t waste a draft pick when it needed a DB is just weird.

  3. brooks55hof Says:

Please God, NO – Not Dilfer

  4. ABucAway Says:

Hey did you see the pics posted on the Bucs site from phase 2 training? Kyle’s been working by the looks of it. Mayfield looks like he’s taking himself way to seriously as always. Goedeke found an NFL gym. Wirfs is a tree. Gage may have pulled a hammy while posing…

  5. SB~LV Says:

Yawn… I feel sorry for ME

  6. Winny Testaverde Says:

Trot Ryan Griffin back into the building…or Vinny Testaverde 2: Electric Boogaloo

  7. FrontFour Says:

    Bring back Ryan Griffen!!!

  8. Leopold Stotch Says:

Yeah I was thinking maybe the 4th/5th round guys like the ones from Fresno State, Purdue, Houston or switch it up and go with the kid from UCLA those guys I had my eyes on for us. Like Licht said, it didn’t shake that way

  9. Buc4evr Says:

Matt Ryan would be perfect. He knows the NFC South and has had success in his career, at least more than Baker. Lol.

  10. Mort Says:

    Matt Ryan. Make it happen.

  11. PewterStiffArm Says:

A.J. McCarron is lighting up the XFL, maybe he would be available. Why the NFL recycles the same four or five backup quarterbacks is beyond me. They could have signed Gabbert but he is now a KC backup, no rhyme or reason.

  12. Joe Says:

If A.J. McCarron is signed by the Bucs, how long before he and Baker Mayfield get into a fistfight? LOL Second week of training camp? 🙂

  13. Pewter Power Says:

Yea if you just want someone in the room Ryan griffin and get it over with. With very little cap on they’ll go the cheap option anyway

  14. Joe Says:

How does Licht define “Been there, done that?” Super Bowl? Playoffs? Former starter? Threw a pick to Ed Reed?

  15. fire the cannons 2023 Says:

we will earn the number 1 pick in 2024

  16. Bucswin Says:

Bakers health I think would be the biggest factor. If he is healthy come season start I’d bet the gig was his. Barring him not clicking with receivers. Trask knows these guys. It’s a win win for us krewe.

  17. Curse of Gruden Says:

    Vinnie baby!

  18. StretchOMatic Says:

No doubt, it will be Matt Ryan.

  19. Duane Says:

Matt Ryan seems unlikely. The guy Licht says he’s looking for won’t challenge for the starting job, which Ryan certainly would, and would be way too expensive to have running the travel squad and rarely suiting up for games.

“Jimmy” is an idiot. Of course Kyle Trask can be the starter. He was a second round draft pick, and led the nation in passing yards, passing TDs, and TD/INT ratio, with considerably better stats than any qb in this year’s draft and Caleb Williams in next year’s draft.

Whether Trask earns the starter’s job or not, nobody, and especially “Jimmy” and JBF assuredly, knows what the outcome will be. Everybody who claims to know what will happen this season is blowing out their A s s,

  20. SlyPirate Says:

    Josh Johnson!!!!

Full circle. End it where you began. Retire a Buc.

  21. slacker Says:

    Carson Wentz….. c’mon down

  22. ManzielMadness Says:

Sounds like Joe Flacco to me!

  23. steele Says:

Team player types who won’t challenge to start, want to start, or dream about glory years when he did stary. Wentz, Ryan are still starters. Bilgewater is still drawing interest.

So, Siemain, Chase Daniel types are good candidates.

  24. Vancouver Buc Says:

    TB12 in da House

  25. Tye Says:

Joe Flacco at 38 – highly doubtful!
Matt Ryan about to be 38 – doubt it!
Carson Wentz declined rapidly – Not what you want to teach you other qbs!
Teddy Bridgewater hasn’t ‘been there done that’ accept injuries – Nope!
Chase Daniels hasn’t been anywhere – Not him!
Mason Rudolph (I’d support) Not ‘been there done that – so doubtful!

The only one left is Trevor Siemian BUT has he ‘been there done that’ AND look at the guys he couldn’t beat out for 2nd string to stay on the team…

  26. David Says:

We need a new era without Tom B. with young players not old qb’s with failed past as Baker and Joe F or Matt R.

  27. Joe Says:

    Bilgewater

    LOL!!!

  28. Tye Says:

Cam Newton would be a clown show!

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Joe Flacco

  30. Tim Says:

My first thought was Flacco, but per Licht’s comments (been there, done that; not going to take over the competition e.g. mentor duties) either Flacco and Ryan could be good mentors.

  31. Buccos Says:

Trade for Winston and then put him on the practice squad where he belongs

  32. Goatfarmer Says:

The beauty of Siemian is, we’re covered in the event of a Penix draft next April.

  33. Goatfarmer Says:

Of all the options listed………go get Ryan Griffin. If we need someone to play, then you go sign one of the other scrubs.

  34. Ken Kistner Says:

My Hope is that Trask wins the competition so that the Bucs (and us fans) do Not constantly guess who the Next Qb will be every year If Trask wins that means that there is something solid to work with. If Mayfield wins the Qb competition then we as Bucs fans can expect the number of TDs equal to the number of interceptions

  35. Brazen Zebra Says:

Just tossin out crap, but what about TB? He might want to walk in the foot steps of George Blanda, play until 48, and be a slash QB. Maybe something like QB coach slash backup QB. TB has been there, done that aplenty. Couldn’t ask for a better QB coach. TB’s time as a starter is done, over, kaput. But, I can see him filling in as needed. Would he take something just over NFL minimum just to get an opportunity to break Blanda’s records? I really don’t think Tom is suited as a pre-game or game announcer. Joe Montana never made s successful transition to the booth. So, maybe the Dolphins are in the cards for TB (Tua might be knocked out permanently in game-1 with his final concussion), or maybe the Bucs could give him another chance to play the game he loves … but just as a backup.

  36. Rand Says:

    A.J. McCarron

  37. Rod Munch Says:

    YES! JOE FLACCO!

  38. Ugotrobbed Says:

Joe Namath looks pretty good in those Medicare infomercials!!

  39. ATLBuc Says:

TB killed too much grass in Ray J last year. Let him rest.

“Of all the options listed………go get Ryan Griffin. ”

How does he qualify as experienced?

    I’d prefer Flacco.

Ryan will always be a Falcon to me.

Tobacco has experience, can mentor, and if both Mayfield and Track suck, he can become a bridge to a draft pick.

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Omg I hate autocorrect.

    Tobacco = Flacco

  43. Mrs. Bucs Fan Says:

Whoever wins the competition between Trask or Baker and does well its a win for the Bucs!

If they do bad and we have a really shi**y season, we get Caleb Williams which is a win for the Bucs!

Either way the Bucs win next year and are in a great position for the next 10+ years!

  44. rrsrq Says:

PJ Walker, didn’t he replace Baker in Carolina?

  45. vadertime Says:

Is Bridgewater still available or did someone pick him up? Otherwise, there is Wentz, Ryan and I keep hearing that Tanneyhill might become available. Flacco may also be available, but I don’t think he would be happy in a backup role considering he took Baltimore to the Superbowl and won just a few years back. At any rate, Bowles needs to go and I hope he is gone after this season.

  46. Joey Lacey Sr Says:

U guys quit complaining n wait n see. If u don’t like our draft picks or anything else change teams. Ride with the Jags or Dolphins. I’m a bucs fan no matter wht. None of us can draft bring in free agents or do anything. But we can complain like a mf like some pissy kids. Grow a pair n let’s see how things goes. Fire them mf cannons

  48. Allbuccedup Says:

Trevor Siemian is now a Bengal. Jason dragging his feet again but there is always Ryan Griffin.

  49. Peskajumba Says:

Wow. So truth. Very honesty. Much sports.

  50. Tony Says:

Kurt Warner coming in to start. Especially now since the son signed with them as an undrafted FA. He’s been there & done that.

  51. GO_BUCS! Says:

A little late to the party, but I think they might go after Nick Foles. He’s “been there, done that,” and he was just released by the Colts. We’ll see. Go Bucs!! 🏴‍☠️

  52. Ed McSherry Says:

Brian Hoyer (37); longtime back up for a certain quarterback named “The Goat.”

Released by the Patriots this year. He could probably help the TE room, too; he knows “The Goat of TEs.”
