“How Much Buy-In Is Coach Bowles Going To Get?”

May 20th, 2023

Microscope on coaching.

Leave it to a reasoned and seasoned former quarterback with a Super Bowl ring to have a different perspective on keys to the 2023 Buccaneers season.

Joe is referring to Shaun King, who spent five years with Tampa Bay before moving on to the Arizona Cardinals and success in coaching and broadcasting. A lifelong Bucs fan from St. Petersburg, King dished out various Bucs takes on WDAE radio this week.

Among them was King withholding any strong predictions — because he isn’t sure how the team will repond to its head coach.

“I’m in wait-and-see mode with the Bucs. I don’t really have a strong opinion on it as we sit now because I think a lot of it is going to be based on how much buy-in you get from some of the guys that have already gotten paid, that have already won a championship,” King said. “How much buy-in is Coach Bowles going to get? That’s something we just won’t know until the season starts.”

King also said an X-factor is the loss of Tom Brady when it comes to offensive execution.

“I think the fan base has to understand it’s going to look different because Brady did so much at the line of scrimmage — out of a bad play into a better play, making the correct adjustments protection-wise, so it’s probably going to look different,” King said.

Joe is intrigued by King noting the unknown “buy-in” from players. Damn, what does that say about the perception of Bowles outside Tampa? It’s not good.

NBC Sports Peter King obviously thinks Bowles won’t get the buy-in from his talented roster. And as Shaun King noted, Vegas oddsmakers are very down on the Bucs. (King lives in Vegas and works for the VSiN gambling network.)

King thinks the Vegas angle is significant because he believes Falcons starting quarterback Desmond Ridder is a backup, Saints QB Derek Carr is just ok, and Carolina rookie QB Bryce Young has yet to take a snap and will be facing a huge adjustment.

Joe is intrigued by the buy-in angle with Bowles, and Joe’s focus there first would go to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Yes, they’re true professionals, but they still need to come out with their hair on fire to start the season. Both remain capable of having career years. It would be great if one of them did.

Joe’s secondary spotlight would turn to Devin White. The captain of the defense is bitter about his contract. If his attitude doesn’t get fixed, then it likely will drag a few weakminded players down with him.

Bowles knows this is his last shot.. no excuses put up or shut up

  2. SB~LV Says:

    Same as last year

  3. Alanbucsfan Says:

If the OLine and running game are successful and the QB doesn’t turn it over, Bucs will have a good season.
Devin White has 2 choices- play his ass off for a big contract or ruin his career with a holdout.

  4. Bojim Says:

These professional athletes are getting paid very well to not buy in. We’ll see. As for White. Trade him. He doesn’t want to be here.

  5. Beej Says:

Did Jensen make the O line calls previously, or did Brady always do that?

  6. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I want to believe my Bucs are going to be better; but I wear pewter glasses, so it is hard to be objective. I have to ask, WHAT is going to be better?

Maybe OC? Canales has never called plays. So, he is going to be learning as he goes and is going to make mistakes. (Anyone is better than Spongebob…).

The OL? Almost ALL are new or playing a new position, and one has a bad knee. So at best we have struggle for at least a little while

New draft picks? Skill positions players coming out of the draft can have immediate impact: WR, RB sometimes a linebacker. Edge rusher Yaya, not likely in his first year. Undersized Kancey – he is going to have growing pains adjusting to the big boys. Guard Mauch maybe ok. ILB Dennis is for next year – baring injury, he won’t get a lot of playing time this year.

Half a Brady > Mayfield. Yes, Brady very much contributed to the bad offense last year. But you are delusional if you think we are suddenly going to have a beast running game (where is the new RB?) behind a dominating Oline (they are all new, or injured). So how does Mayfield do better than Brady from last year?

I don’t want to be negative Nancy, I really don’t. But I had a moment of objectivity and it wasn’t pretty. Take the under 6.5

  7. John Sinclear Says:

Why is it that Bryce Young, who has never played a down in the NFL, is the good guy in the white hat, and Kyle Trask, Brady’s understudy for two years, is the bad guy in the black hat?

  8. Joe Says:

Why is it that Bryce Young, who has never played a down in the NFL, is the good guy in the white hat, and Kyle Trask, Brady’s understudy for two years, is the bad guy in the black hat?

Not sure what you mean by “black hat.” Don’t think anyone believes Trask is some villain.

As for Young, there is a reason the guy was the first pick in the draft.

  9. Steven007 Says:

Yes Joe, the reason Young was the first pick is because he was a very good quarterback and a competitive division. Much like Trask was his last year. Granted there is no comparison with their athleticism. But it would be interesting to see where Trask would have been picked this year coming off his last college year. Trust me, I’m no Trask Homer. And I doubt he wins the job at first at least. But it’ll be interesting to see how he progresses, assuming he does.

  10. TDTB2022 Says:

Wasn’t Mr. Entertainment a first pick in the draft, Joseph?

  11. ModHairKen Says:

Who exactly is King talking about? Mike Evans? He thinks Mike Evans might not buying? Chris Godwin? Godwin’s not committed? Wirfs? Wirfs it’s not gonna buy them? We know 45 isn’t buying in because the selfish baby brat wants to leave.

I don’t see a problem with this team buying in. Especially the ones that have been to the top and won the Super Bowl. They know time is precious and they’re not gonna come in and hoof it hoping they get somebody else next year and some skag rookie quarterback.

  12. ModHairKen Says:

I suspect blaming the team for not buying in is the opposite of Bowles not doing a good job of motivating. Six of one, 1/2 dozen of the other.

  13. Richard Says:

It’s not just the perception of Bowles outside Tampa….the perception oh him inside Tampa is terrible as well. I hope otherwise but can’t help but feel that the Arians to Bowles arrangement was a disaster, a mistake of major proportions!! Glazers and BUD Lyght decided to have a new coach with a 37% winning percentage take over a team with super bowl aspirations…utter nonsense!!!

  14. Hodad Says:

They don’t have Brady to check out of a bad play. Yeah they also don’t have Leftwich calling bad plays. The vet players know who, and what they have in Bowles, they’ve already bought in. His defensive players rave about Bowles, even tho the fans don’t want to hear it, they’ve bought in. The coach who needs the players to buy in would be Canales. If we have success on offense things will be fine.

  15. Dewey Selmon Says:

When did Shaun King get a SB ring?

  16. Mike C Says:

Has anyone checked up on Goatfarmer? This article is like the bat signal errr….. the Goat signal.

  17. Mosey Says:

By in is from players that Bowels drafted period. Got rid of the studs good luck buddy

  18. Buc1987 Says:

Dewey …King got one as a 3rd string back up to Brad Johnson.

  19. Allen Lofton Says:

If White’s attitude affects a few weak-minded players so be it. We need to rid of them too.

  20. Duane Says:

Shawn King is wiser than most talking heads, because he admits he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. None of them know how well the Bucs will do this season, and of course not a g-damned one of them has the foggiest notion of the psychology of the players on this roster, both veteran and newbies. How could they? They”re just pulling sh it outta their azzes when they proclaim that the Bucs are this or the Bucs are that, or will do this or will do that. They get paid by the yak, and so they yak, and all of it is meaningless and worthless, with no realtionship whatsoever to reality.

That’s why they play the games.

  21. HC Grover Says:

If it ain’t broke, HC/DC Superbpwles will break it.

  22. FrontFour Says:

Trade D. White. He’s not worth his asking price and is a cancer on the team. Get him out of here.

  23. Voice of Truth Says:

With 4 losing seasons out of 5 as a HC the chances are they don’t listen much at all…just common sense

The guy is a loser as a HC, period

  24. Pickgrin Says:

Shaun King – one of two QBs who LOST an NFC Championship game while his defense gave up less than 10 points…..

  25. Ugotrobbed Says:

DW being a team captain is a joke! Runs his mouth and seldom backs it up on the field. Do your freaking job, then you can run your mouth!

  26. Pelsbuc61 Says:

There was something noticeably off with this team last year from the beginning as if they didn’t buy in to what Bowles was preaching and it got progressively worse during the season. He’s just not the right HC for this team no matter the talent.

  27. Lakeland Steve Says:

Unless the Bucs get an extremely strong commitment from Devin White that he is all in for this season the Bucs will be playing with fire. Don’t think for a minute that if White shows up with an attitude that other players won’t also get dragged down by it. The Bucs need to get rid of him before the season starts if he isn’t 100% committed to playing his best football this year.

  28. Go Bucs Says:

I love the Buccaneers and have since 1976! But Bowles isn’t it and he knows it and the Buccaneers know it.We need to be patient this year. It’s a pattern that the Buccaneers go through. Go Bucs…

  29. 1#bucsfan Says:

Everyone is yarning for a 1st rd draft pick. I’m sorry but I’m not one of them. Not after Winston with that 1st hand experience. There’s more like the Winston’s going in the 1st to just flop then there is actual good long lasting QBs. Yea do the Winston’s, young’s, strouds Jamarcus Russell’s do great in college but just to flop in the nfl. Winston did throw for 5k but look who he was throwing to. He was entertaining to watch. Lol my point is that the 1st rd QBs are not the only chance to get a franchise QB.

  30. HC Grover Says:

When the pressure is on during a game, HC/DC has the first thought . ‘What would Love do?’ then he does it.

  31. Tye Says:

Bowels is what he is, Dung as a HC!
Should NEVER have wasted our time making him HC..

  32. Fred McNeil Says:

As one more voice chiming in with the choir: Bowlzo’s reputation is crap inside Tampa as well. Hey, we are stuck with him this year so I’m hoping for the best. If Canales works out as well as I think he will and Bowles stays out of his way and just sticks to the defense we can have a pretty good year…well…if the QB room can deliver. If all that holds true he’ll be our coach next year too. As long as he keeps winning fans will forget about the “mistake by the lake” and the zero blitz disaster.

  33. BBQBUC Says:

Joe Says: “As for Young, there is a reason the guy was the first pick in the draft.”

That he measured 5’10” at the combine?

  34. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey Joe Can ya define : “some villain”

  35. Voice of Truth Says:

How about a Sunday confidence poll for good ole Todd??

My guess is current approval rating is less than 30%

At least 70%, if not more, have ZERO confidence in this imposter of a head coach

The Glazers are literally allowing this tool another year of rope while flushing cap space

Why saddle a new coach with Traskerfield….

    Throw away season

  36. Mike Johnson Says:

I do believe the Defense will be ready because that’s Bowles strong suite. Nothing worries me but the Offense. And a lot of it hinges on the play or Baker or Trask. I am not confident. But lets see what the new OC has got. If..Our offense can score? we got a shot. But they gotta bring at least 21 a game. We shall see.

  37. ATLBuc Says:

“I think the fan base has to understand it’s going to look different because Brady did so much at the line of scrimmage — out of a bad play into a better play, making the correct adjustments protection-wise, so it’s probably going to look different,” King said.

From what I saw, they got out of bad plays into worse plays.

  38. ATLBuc Says:

    Lakeland Steve

This is a contract year for White. He can’t afford to be disgruntled

  39. Warrenfb12 Says:

Idk man I think Bowles is a dead man walking and everyone knows it

  40. garro Says:

I would hope we as a team are better than the I got paid stuff. High character players don’t give in to such things especially those who want to get paid again. Team leaders should put a stop to any of that.

I would respectfully disagree with Shaun on the reasons to wait and see. My reasons would be the obvious. New OC and scheme. Unknown QB situation. O line shakeup. Only ojne starter in the same position and he was injured last season. Many new pieces on defense. Drafted players on defense haven’t taken an NFL snap yet. Not to mention Shaqs injury and the underachievers who need to step up.

I agree with what he said about Brady doing more than what the untrained eye could see. Brady was limited by his Run game, OC and his O line.

  41. garro Says:

Seems I remember Meshaun got told not to bother coming to work by he who shall not be named. Bowles aint got the cojones to do that though.

Did Jensen make the O line calls previously, or did Brady always do that?

I believe Jensen did, but of course Brady could change it according to what he saw. Yet another reason we missed Jensen so much last year.
