Bucs Ball At The Beach

May 7th, 2023

Bucs rookie DT Calijah Kancey.

Perhaps this was a chance meeting of the Bucs’ first-round draft pick and a former NFL offensive lineman on a Florida beach. But it smells like a Baywatch-like setup.

Anyone remember when Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza made an appearance on the guilty-pleasure TV show? Pam Anderson crossed paths with him on an episode of Baywatch as Piazza, wearing his Dodgers jersey and cap, was aimlessly taking batting practice swings at the beach like he was in an on-deck circle.

You know, just an everyday occurrence of an All-Star catcher wearing his jersey swinging a baseball bat at a crowded beach for no apparent reason.

That’s what this seems like. NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger (his social media followers know he’s a duck to water when he’s not breaking down football tape) claims he just ran into Bucs defensive tackle Calijah Kancey while Kancey was working out at a Fort Lauderdale beach.

(Were Anderson and Piazza nearby?)

Two football linemen get together and what happens? Kancey shows Baldinger moves that worked for him at Pitt and that he hopes to use in his Bucs career to great effect.

Yeah, Joe supposes this could be a random meeting. Didn’t Tom Brady get chased out of a Tampa city park for having the gall to throw passes when the park was closed?

If Kancey was running sprints on the beach, provided he had ample room to do so, that’s an impressive workout.

    Something fishy about this…..

  2. Bucschamp Says:

    Wow he does look small

  3. Sean Says:

    His size is a concern

  4. Obvious Says:

He looks smaller than he is because he’s standing at the drop off of where the beach and the water get together. Still he looks small either way.

The truth is probably more like Ballinger is a Big Dude! He’s in Amazing shape for his age. Buddy still has some play left in him (Ballinger) . And imagine how an average 200lb man 5″ 10″ / 5’11” would look standing besides Kancey at 280. Ballinger makes Kancey look like he weighs maybe 200lbs next to Dinger. And since he’s (Kancey) listed as 6’1″ and at the bottom of the hill, Ballinger what? 6’6″ and at the top of the hill, you would think Balldinger had the advantage. But that’s the beauty of Kancey’s size. He’d yank Ballinger all over the place with that leverage so close to the ground. Pull him down where he’d darn near would fall forward Unless he had Wirfs type athleticism and balance. Without that, a defender is screwed. Now add about 100 mph to the senerio and you start to understand why he’s SO special..

As far as power. I can’t get the image of him (Kancey) yanking around AND throwing TWO large humans around 300 lbs each (the center and the guard) and throwing them BOTH out of his way AT THE SAME TIME, as if they weren’t even there, and tackling the QB! THAT’S OVER 600LBS OF TRYING TO PUSH HIM (Kancey) at the same time being THROWN out of the way! In other words you have to Multiple the force of 2 LARGE MEN pushing him at the same time, PLUS 600 LBS of FORCE behind the push, BUT INSTEAD being Thrown OUT OF THE WAY AT THE SAME TIME!

    Now THAT’S Strong!!!

And because Ballinger is as old as he is and even though in great shape, well the truth is Kancey would rip dinger in half right now. Back in the day however…… I gotta wonder. Ballinger is a name you know For A REASON! (And it’s probably not for the “first thing” that comes to mind)…

And the counter strikes just come so natural for Kansey. It’s just like breathing to him. I can only imagine how good he’s going to be in a few more years. Wow!

The one thing Kancey has going for him is that he understands the nuances of rushing the passer. The majority of dlineman when they come into the NFL, rely too much on talent rather than technique and tricks of the trade.

  6. firethecannons Says:

Kancey is moving so fast the guard or center doesn’t even have time to figure out his next move. The arms are swinging and the hands are flashing and next thing they know they are off balance and they don’t even know what happened. Seems as if kancey uses his height and short aarms to his advantage, he has it figured out.

    Speed kills…

Good football players come in all shapes and sizes…
Everyone was saying the same things about Aaron Donald…

  8. Josh Rice Says:

AnonymousBuc76. 100% He is gonna tare it up!

  9. Josh Rice Says:

People act like Kancey is the only defensive player that the opponent has to worry about. Thats what is going to elevate this guy from the gate.
We have plenty of others coming at them also. Veta is there and don’t forget we signed Rams DT Greg Gaines. Gaines is going to be a big help on the D Line that I think everyone has forgotten about. I don’t have to list the rest of the defensive cast do I? He size isn’t going to mean a thing by the end of it. His speed and techniques will make him stand out. He was no scrub in his playing days at PITT.

  10. LakelandSteve Says:

If you watch his tape he consistently beats everyone off the ball by about a half of a step. Not only the defensive lineman but the offense who knows the snap count. Dude is quick as lightening.

You’re right, dynamite comes in small packages.
    ADonald
    EDumerville
    JHarrison
They all were small n undersize for their position but they were strong n explosive n played with sound technique. Let’s give Kancey due process before judgement, i.e., drills, nfl coaching, classroom study, practice, preseason, etc.

  12. WhatTheBuc Says:

Warren Sapp at the combine= 6’1″ 281 pounds
Kancey at the combine=6’1″ 281 pounds

Future stud just wait licht and the boys got this one right

  14. Dooley Says:

Naturally winning the leverage game and the talk about leverage here is clutch. Y’all are getting worked up over his size, this kid looks rock solid lol

  15. stpetebucfan Says:

If you read the comments to Baldy’s twitter post you begin to believe we may have scored big time with Calijah and the incredible respect football fans…me included…have for Baldy’s work as an analyst.

He doesn’t do the drama, TB’s divorce, AB’s descent into craziness, which QB is going to start for the Bucs…he shows techniques, skill sets, and analyzes those with game film as well.

Baldy’s the best lets hope Calijah blossoms to become one of the best.

How about a debate. Who was/is better…Sapp or Aaron Donald?

  16. Hodad Says:

Baldy has about 6 inches on Kancy, but the slope of the beach makes it look like a whole foot. Low, strongman wins in the NFL. Once this kid gets under your pads it’s over. You can’t block what you can’t hit.

  17. Beejezus-belt Says:

Love Baldys’ 5th digit on that right hand. Trademark.

  18. Mike Says:

Every time I see him I think of Sapp. Excited to see him put on a Bucs jersey!

  19. Winky Says:

Just a couple of shirtless dudes touching each other at the shore.

    Serene.

    Go Bucs!

  20. Nate Says:

He is short but it looks worse because the sand where he is standing does slope down inclined to the water guys..makes him look at least 2 in shorter…and Brady is like 6’6💯

  21. Duane Says:

Hes likely to look even smaller lining up next to Vea, but we didnt draft him to take up space. He will be able to shoot gaps, slip blocks, and disrupt. Gotta see him stop the run during the preseason, but I think this guy may contribute.

  22. Mr. Editor Says:

It’s true what they were saying about that massive amount of seaweed coming our way!

  23. Sly Pirate Says:

CK is gonna be a problem.

He’ll be halfway past most OG before they get out of their stance.

  24. chark Says:

While having shorter arms can be a detraction at times,,it is not a death sentence for a dl. On some occasions it can actually work for a dl. Quicker first jab to the body . A bit overrated feature for dl since they are attacking trying to get past the other guy in any way shape or form. While for an ol his actions are mostly the opposite in the passing game. I’d take a 4 man DL of plugger fireballs with stocky builds any day if they are explosive. The whole length talk is a little overblown..take the better football player 1st and foremost. Its becoming like the 40 yrd dash. So a guys arms are 1 1/2 inches longer than yours. Not a dealbreaker to me. Use your assets, kancey can get inside the ol body quicker because of his build. you win some you lose some

  25. Brandon Says:

Ballinger is 6’4 AND standing at the higher point in the sand. The shore ALWAYS goes down hill towards the water. Anyone making a big deal out of this knows neither football nor beaches.

  26. Joe in Michigan Says:

I love that the Bucs got Kancey, and Baldy saying he already has it figured out!

  27. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

That’s like a bad gay porn!

  28. Capt.Tim Says:

Tiny. He has a hard road ahead of him

  29. Bucschamp Says:

Ah let’s wait and see first how he fare Vs NFLs huge OLines before we compare him to Sapp and AD. Line him up with Wirfs!

  30. garro Says:

Begs the question…Did he send a scouting report to Bucs DL coach Kacy Rodgers? Love Baldinger….but come on now.
