“You Have To Be Comfortable Being Uncomfortable In This Business”

April 18th, 2023

Todd Bowles opens up.

Cool insight from Todd Bowles on the latest The Rock Stops Here podcast.

Joe was sitting on a couch listening when the Buccaneers head coach sat down with host Rock Riley recently. The subject of new offensive coordinator Dave Canales came up and Bowles showed one way he’s nothing at all like Bucco Bruce Arians.

Arians openly spoke about how he only wanted to hire guys he knows and that he no longer wanted to “coach the coaches.” Bowles, however, has a very different approach.

That led led him to hire a playcaller he had never met previously.

“It’s not about who you know, it’s about what kind of football coach you are — for me it is,” Bowles said emphatically. “And bringing in who you know is not always a good thing. You have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable in this business, and being open and honest with yourself. And we had guys we knew and it didn’t work out. So to bring in more guys we knew that wouldn’t have been total football coaches all the way around the way we saw how we wanted to be as a team, [that] would have be a detriment.

“So we went through a steady process and we interviewed a bunch of guys. And your personalilty has to fit. Your scheme has to fit with the guys that you have on the team. You gotta have answers to the test all the time. It doesn’t mean it’s going to work but you got to have answers. You gotta have a system, you gotta be able to teach it. And Dave, we hit it off right away. I kinda knew that he was that guy, and I had I had some great interviews: Thomas Brown, Scottie Montgomery, Keenan McCardell, Dan Pitcher, Shea Tierney, Ronald Curry. There was a lot of guys I thought that are going to be great coaches in this league. But for our fit, Canales was the perfect guy, I thought, in the interview process for me.”

Great stuff there from Bowles.

Joe particularly was intrigued by the head coach saying, “your scheme has to fit with the guys that you have on the team.”

So does that mean Bowles thinks the Bucs have the horses to run Canales’ run-first offense?

Clearly he was not following this mantra last year… Seemingly at least. It was clear the difference of philosophy of offense based on the results. Maybe if he was comfortable being uncomfortable about the offense last year, we would have had better results. Or at the very least slapped SpongeBob a little to do better.

  2. Stanglassman Says:

I know it’s really popular to rag on Bowles on this site but hopefully some of those same detractors will give him a modicum of credit here.

Great hire. I’m excited to see this offensive grow under Canales.

  3. Leopold Stotch Says:

I’ll give him credit for doing a very good job with the defense given injuries and whatnot. I also like the Canales hire. It seems everyone did their homework. I also be remiss to not acknowledge he drew the short stick when it came to last year, not being able to hire his people… I’m just salty about how it all went down last year. On one hand, you’re handed a very good team and would think that maybe we should ride the wave for a year and go for broke. On the other, it’s your team and you should do what you think is best. He was in a crappy situation, but there were things that could have been done by everyone to make the best of it.

  4. Buc4evr Says:

Think Canales was a great hire, just concerned about having an O-line, TEs, and a QB that can execute his gameplan.

  5. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Still can’t believe they gave the keys to a natural born loser and hopefully this year will be the last time we see Todd on the sidelines. The cracks are so apparent, but hopefully the Glazers redo everything next season when they get a top 5 pick and hopefully are interning with the Bolts to learn how to be a winner and run the number one organization in hockey. Go BOLTS

  6. Goatfarmer Says:

You have to be smart with being stupid in this business. Or maybe it’s, you have to be stupid with being smart in this business. Definitely one of the two. Or both.

    Jesus Christ.

  7. Goatfarmer Says:

Interesting, weve seen a plethora of blown assignments by the Bloweszo coached team. So he loves to teach, great. Maybe he should stop teaching anthropology and try teaching football.

  8. Tim Says:

I notice he didn’t mention Jim Bob Cooter. I guess they didn’t hit it off.

  9. sasquatch Says:

Never let an opportunity to sh!t on Bowles pass without adding your own excrement. Doesn’t it get a little old to repeat the same hateful crap day after day?

  10. Goatfarmer Says:

    Have a tissue, Tito.

  11. HC Grover Says:

    McKay Ghost could be influencing.

  12. chark Says:

I dont and will not buy the whole “bowles didnt have his guys bs” . He would have stayed with Leftwich and the whole coaching staff irregardless. They were bruce’s guys and the became todd’s guys. Leftwich the manufactured excuse that was.

  13. Goatfarmer Says:

You’ll know if he says “ a couple of plane crashes and we’re in the playoffs.”

Too bad McKay had to work for Culverhouse.

    First, it’s “regardless”…

There is nothing to support the idea that Leftwich and the others ever were Todd’s guys. He was not given a choice.

And you can call it an excuse, but rational people see an actual reason. The offense did not succeed largely because of Leftnut, and trying to replace a coordinator mid-season is not something that often yields the desired improvement.

Saying that Leftwich was just Bowles’ scapegoat is just another excuse to p!ss on Bowles, not a reality-based analysis.

  15. captivajim Says:

Why is this such a ” great hire” ??

  16. garro Says:

Excuse me if I withhold my enthuiasm Mr Bowles. Show me Mr Canales.

  17. garro Says:

    By the way
Bowles is quickly become the King of Cliche’s LOL

  18. Vancouver Buc Says:

Is sascrotch really Bowels in disguise?

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Sasquatch … ‘Doesn’t it get a little old to repeat the same hateful crap day after day?’

Goatfarmer … ‘Have a tissue, Tito.’

Apparently spewing the same old bullsh1t never goes out of style for some Sasquatch.

I’m not even a big supporter. I just don’t see the point in the constant bashing and irrational contempt for the man.

I admit, I will derive a great deal of pleasure if he proves everyone wrong though. I’m pulling for my team to succeed.

  21. Show Me the TDs Says:

Funny stuff. Bowels has like what, 4 losing seasons and not one winning season as a head coach and the offense last year was one of the league’s worst. He thinks his way is better than Arians’ way. Delusional!

  22. BucU Says:

Did he really say your scheme has to fit the players that u have???

  23. BucU Says:

When Bowles actually does something positive we’ll be sure to note it Sasquatch.

  24. Voice of Truth Says:

    It’s not irrational it’s factual

His record speaks for itself and we all witnesses the dumpster fire he put on the field last year

As a loyal fan I hope he has a metamorphosis and suddenly becomes a competent HC – but as a human I am blessed with deductive reasoning

  25. Goatfarmer Says:

Wow. The Great Pontificator managed to whine for only two or three sentences. Well done. It is possible to get a point across without a thousand word treatise that cures insomnia. Or, like the verbose one says to others, just don’t read my posts if they aggravate you that much, which of course is part of the game.

  26. NEfan Says:

He sure has a way of making players and fans uncomfortable.

  27. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

My hopes for this season is we don’t get embarrassed.

    Yep that’s the high bar.

  28. TonySoprano Says:

I really like the optimism and energy Canales is bringing to the table – it’s night and day compared to our walking dead HC and mentally-challenged former OC.

But if Todd is genuine with this comment, I really have to question why our Special Teams coach is still employed.

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

Keith Armstrong must have compromising video of the Toadster with some livestock.
