“We’re About To Go To The Super Bowl”

April 8th, 2023

Future still unclear.

Joe loves hearing stories like this from a Bucs player. Or maybe, a former player?

Bucs free agent defensive lineman Will Gholston is unemployed. Who knows if he returns or not? But Gholston, appearing on the “Celebrity Jobber” podcast hosted by local talk show veteran Jeff Zito, described one of his greatest moments with the Bucs.

Zito asked Gholston if he was happy when the Bucs signed Tom Brady three years ago. Brady had a well-earned reputation as a no-nonsense workaholic and Zito wanted to know if Gholston had a sense of dread that he might have to put up with an egomaniac in Brady.

No, Brady was just the opposite, Gholston said.

“I turned to Nacho and said, ‘We’re about to go to the Super Bowl,’ Gholston said, referring to former teammate Rakeem “Nacho” Nuñez-Roches..

He was right about that.

Gholston explained how Brady was a regular guy in the locker room and added Brady was very funny and a genuine dude, something Gholston didn’t expect.

As for the 2023 Bucs, Gholston did not mention if he will return. Zito twice referenced the 2023 Bucs and Gholston never commented.

In Arizona at the NFL Annual Meeting, speaking to reporters, Bucs coach Todd Bowles said that Gholston remains “an option.” Gholston has played in every Bucs game since the 2017 season.

  1. Andrew Fish Says:

need to resign him. He is always available and does his specific job that Bowles ask him to do very well.

  2. adam from ny Says:

he might not make it past this season as a buc…but he should be signed on for at least one last year

  3. Pablo Says:

We definitely need to bring him back on a cheap team. Friendly deal, Pablo really enjoyed seeing this guy out there because he had to suffer through the last decade.

  4. adam from ny Says:

and how come we stopped rocking the all pewter unis…?

gotta get those going at least a couple times this upcoming season

  5. Rand Says:

I can’t believe no-one hasn’t signed him yet for at least great depth.

  6. Fansince76 Says:

Dude turned out to be an excellent 4th round pick for the Bucs if i remember correctly. who woulda thunk he would be with the team this long. an very good run defender at peak of is career. Would be good as depth piece this year if they resign.

  7. Austin Says:

Dudes an OG, he better be back, we’re way better with him

  8. Dooley Says:

    @Fansince76

Agreed, Gholston has played for 5 different Bucs HCs and if I’m remembering correctly the pick we used on him was from the Aqib Talib deal to New England back in 2013. I hope the plans are to bring him back, he & LVD have been through the worst and best of times as Bucs.

  9. Beej Says:

Not so much a pass rusher, but he’s great against the run and a great dude. Certainly adds depth if we don’t want him for a starter

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs will need 4 guys on the interior to keep a reasonable rotation going, and right now we only have Vea & Gaines. We re-signed Senat & O’Connor, but neither of them have exactly set the world on fire. Will Gholston more than earned his keep last season by giving us very close to 500 def snaps. His 49 tackles were almost as many as Vea (31) & Hicks (22) combined. Not much in terms of pass rush, but great against the run.

  11. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

    Resign him.

  12. SufferingSince76 Says:

When I saw his photo, I thought he was back. Great story, but what a letdown. Get it done, JL. Please?

  13. Goatfarmer Says:

    Bring him back.

  14. Allbuccedup Says:

Nobody seems nobody wants ex buc players I mean SMB and Edwards got picked up for chump change Nacho did okay but thats about it. Smith, Gabbert, Gholston

  15. Beej Says:

Nor Hicks. I expect one or both may return when the Buc’s offer becomes their best option

  16. Erik Hesson | Fine Artist | Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Bucs have made soooo many terrible/stupid personell decisions in the past 18 months. Players and coaching staff included. That is why we are basically the Yucks again at this point. Sign Gholston, morons!

  17. Terry Says:

Great guy. Run stopper that has been dependable.

  18. Winky Says:

Another fan here supporting a Gholston return.

    Solid player and Dude.

    Go Bucs!!

  19. DungyDance Says:

    ^^^ ditto

  20. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

IMHO, we need to re sign him

  21. teacherman777 Says:

    Go watch the playoff game!

He was one of the only guys who showed up!

Gholston deserves the same respect as Lavonte David.

William Gholston was a 4th round draft pick.

And he’s one of the toughest Buccaneers of all time!

He deserves to retire a Buc!

  22. Voice of Truth Says:

Love WillG’s heart and effort – can’t have enough guys like him on the roster

  23. Browsing from DC Says:

Where’s #8 been? Haven’t heard “Suh” in a while. Lol

Would love to see Gholston back tho.

  24. Buccos Says:

He is still a very good player. He should be a lifetime Buc just as much as Lavonte

  25. Jumbo Says:

Super bowl! Maybe he should worry about winning the division first. The other 3 teams all were just 1 games behind Tampa (and that was with Brady). The bucs will have a tough time getting in.

  26. Bucs Guy Says:

After the draft, if you still have a hole, sign him.

  27. TampaBayRudy Says:

It would be silly to think Bucs brass even skims these posts. Also silly to think that fan popularity matters. But in reality, we who know football watch players more closely than even brass do on the field. Vox populi is actually a valuable tool, if they used it. Imho, Gholston has been a stalwart on defense. No one is going to say Booger McFarland was a hof player, because everyone focuses on Warren Sapp. But between Booger, Greg Spires, Simeon Rice, Ryan Nece, Brooks, and the all star cast of Lynch, Barber et al, teams win rings and break other guys like Vita Vea out on a DL. It’s not always the one player who does it on an island. Btw, Booger has more rings than Sapp, despite having no pro bowl nominations. Sign Gholston; he’s a role player and a Pippen to any Jordans we might discover this season. 💯

  28. Rod Munch Says:

I think it’s just a money issue. He’s likely going to want at least what he was making, which was over $4m I think, and that’s gonna be difficult to get done unless you’re wanting to put everything on next years cap. But, with that said, if you’re not rebuilding, and the Bucs aren’t rebuilding, you might as well bring back as many people as possible. Gholston is a solid player, a vet, worth bringing back if possible.

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

Rarely is there near unanimous consensus on a player. Well done, Will.

    Bring him back Jason.

  30. SlyPirate Says:

Greatest Under-Appreciated Bucs Players (off the top of my head) …

    Will Gholston
    Joe Jurevicius
    Anthony McFarland
    Greg Spires
    Paul Gruber

  31. IrishTony Says:

    Resign him please.

  32. HC Grover Says:

Every year. Same old hype. Very team is about to go to the Super Bowl. Total Caca de Toro.

  33. Buccaner Bonzai Says:

I wouldn’t mind if they re-signed Will Gholston at vet minimum.

  34. Buccaner Bonzai Says:

    @HC Grover

Did you actually read the article? lol

  35. BucfaninMi Says:

I remember watching the Titians eliminate the Patriots the announcer asked, what’s next for Tom Brady? I turned to my wife and said he’s going to the Bucs and winning the Superbowl! It was met with an eye roll at the time! I know the feeling Will had.

  36. BigMacAttack Says:

Has any D lineman worked harder than Gholston? I don’t think so. He always leaves everything on the field. Max effort every play. I’d sign him before someone else does. Why do we let JPP & Suh go? Still trying to figure that one out. Why did we let Matt Bryant go? Why did we let John Lynch go? Why did we let Warrick Dunn go? This list goes on for days

  37. Usfbuc Says:

@ Bonzai no he read the headlines and so did Jumbo. It’s the limited characters, 30 sec short clip world we live in. Nobody has time to read even a short article.

  38. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

Hopefully he will come cheap. I’m surprised no one reached for him. 49 tackles, pretty darn good.

  39. I’m not tired anymore because we just won the Super Bowl! Says:

Gholston should be a Buc! Standup guy and always did his job. Make it happen Mr. Licht. Go Bucs!

  40. garro Says:

Re-sign him and Hicks as well! Both great versus the run and Hicks make Vea emmensely better by keepng him from having to deal with so many doubleteams blocks!

  41. PauleyD Says:

I hardly like to think Todd bowles has somebody better in mind for his defense awesome depth or even starter, has definitely proven himself SIGN HIM QUICK so you can focus elsewhere on the draft

  42. Bucsfan13 Says:

The cognitive dissonance from what some fans and media think of Tom Brady is so very wide. Fans hate him and think he’s some jerk, yet the man had played over 20 years and no teammate and coach has said anything negative about him. They talk about his work ethic and preparation, but they talk about he’s a great guy. For someone to be such a superstar, it’s something to marvel about. He’s not some egomaniac as fans and media like to thinks about him. He’s perhaps one of the misunderstood athlete in sports.

His Stans and some media like to about his accomplishments and give him all the credit. Brady has never once taken all the credit for a team’s success. He constantly talks about it being a team game. Don’t take your frustration out on him because the media and some of his Stans put him on pedestal.

  43. NEfan Says:

Jumbo and HC HC Grover, reading is fundamental. Letting Suh slip through Bucs fingers not leaving Gholston hanging, how does Licht have a job? That is unless Blows is making the call which sounds more reasonable.

Hodad, Chicbuc, Oneilsuckyall, what Bucsfan13 said!!! Just appreciate the greatness.

  44. Captain Vic Says:

Bring him back, sign him soon. Good veteran presence, who is reliable, and available!! And by available, I don’t mean a free agent, I mean “available” – not injured all the time.

Ps, Suh went to the Super Bowl, and JPP was 1 game away, played in the Div. Title Game. Should have kept one or both, more veteran leadership, and swagger!!
