No. 4 Receiver Questions

April 6th, 2023

Breshad Perriman is on the street.

Scotty Miller has relocated to Atlanta. Tyler Johnson is in Vegas. Breshad Perriman is a man without a team.

Who will be the Buccaneers’ No. 4 wide receiver?

Joe was very intrigued when Johnson signed a contract with the Raiders in late January. Joe has to assume Tom Brady gave him a good recommendation to Raiders head coach and Brady friend Josh McDaniels.

Miller went cheap to the Falcons and it seems only $150,000 of his contract is guaranteed.

Perriman is about to turn 30 and Joe thinks it’s reasonable to think he will return. It always seemed like Perriman did what was asked of him, and he was successful with Baker Mayfield in Cleveland back in 2018, which led to the Bucs signing him in 2019.

Last year’s undrafted Bucs rookie receiver, Deven Thompkins, remains on the roster as the returning return man, though he’s not proven. Receiver Kaylon Geiger is practice squad material.

Joe doesn’t hear anyone talking about the Bucs drafting a receiver later this month, but Joe thinks it’s inevitable. And Joe believes general manager Jason Licht will be looking for a guy with instant special-teams-beast potential, much like Chris Godwin showed in his rookie season (2017) and Justin Watson the year after.

Watson, now a free agent, actually earned a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs last season with a career high 315 yards receiving on just 15 receptions. He also played special teams.

  1. Dooley Says:

Man leave Perriman where he is and pluck a WR from this deep class coming out in 2023

  2. Rican Says:

Rather have Justin Watson back over Perriman.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Wouldn’t mind having Justin Watson back.

  4. SteelStudBuc Says:

    Bring back Watson!! And ROJO

  5. SlyPirate Says:

    DEVIATING FROM THE MO

In past years, Licht would plug all the roster gaps with FA pre-draft. It freed him up to wheel and deal and get “their guy”.

That’s when the Bucs had cap to burn.

This year, it seems they are going to target need in the draft and fill in gaps with low-price FAs, if need be. The Bucs draft will predictably have OT, OG, OLB, DL, WR. I expect 2xIOL and 2xOLB/LB.

  6. Redeemer Says:

Dooley I agree, just draft one. The top three slots are set in stone. I’d be stunned if they take one in the first three rounds. If they did, it tells a lot about how they feel about Gage. Who knows, Evans ain’t getting younger. I just hope licht doesn’t fall in love with a guy, and sacrifice other needs. How much does a 4th reciever contribute anyway. IMO it’s way down on the list of needs.

  7. Goatfarmer Says:

We gave up on Tyler too quick. Another Beauty for Bloweszo!

I’d like seeing JWat back but Mahomes loved him. Hope Perriman comes back – although his best came with Jameis. Maybe he’s a Saint.

  8. Crunchbuc Says:

Leave Perriman on the street. Too fre targets and too many drops. Watson would be a good pickup. Good ST player too

  9. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

I’d like Justin Watson back but he may be too expensive for a 4th receiver, especially when considering what we’re paying the first three.

  10. SOEbuc Says:

Yeah Watson was our top tackler on ST, then we cut him, and then did a fine job for what his roll on KC was. I always liked him and thought he had good hands. Would not be bad pick up for cheap.

  11. Beej Says:

Did we cut JW? I thought he had simply entombed himself in Brady’s doghouse

  12. A Bucs Fan Says:

A 6th or 7th round WR for special teams would be fine this year. Next year is the year to invest premium draft capital in WR’s.

As far as Perriman, he was too inconsistent last year. The Bucs will be looking for a true slot with CG working outside the hashes, and there is one guy out there who is that: Richie James from NYG.. if only they could afford him.

  13. David Says:

Tompkins and draft another young speedy receiver.
They NEED to get younger and faster.

  14. Goatfarmer Says:

Thompkins has shown he can play. He’s just been unfairly treated! Never had his chance with the ones! The Thompkins Suppression Conspiracy!

    jk

  15. Marine Buc Says:

The Bucs should be drafting a WR (maybe 2) in a few weeks.

After the draft if we still need a WR then I/m sure there will be a few WRs left to choose from.

I wouldn’t be in a big hurry to sign Perriman. He is only good for @ 4-6 games before he is put on IR.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Perriman would be great to bring back, since in an emergency he can can start, he’s proven that. The issue, as always, is health, and I doubt you’d be able to rely on him because of that.

Also, while I like Thompkins as a return guy, he’s just way too small to play WR outside of some gimmick plays (and I’d script him some since he has the juice to make those plays).

But the Bucs do have to at least start planning for a post-Evans world, and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to draft someone early and start grooming them for that role, since they can be productive as a depth WR in the meantime. You know, the same way the team draft Goodwin when they already had D-Jax and Humphries in front of him.

  17. bobby brown Says:

I like this guy but he had his chance. I’d pick him up after the draft

  18. PewterStiffArm Says:

Not a fan of Perriman, but I have followed Watson and last year Mahomes liked his game. I say try to bring him back.

  19. catcard202 Says:

Draft a Day3 WR to develop behind ME, Godwin & Gage…

Frankly, if the FO / Scouting Dept can’t identify a fast Day3 guy that can better Perriman’s sub-50% career catch rate in this deep WR class…They shouldn’t have a job at One Bucs Place!!!

  20. Buccos Says:

Maybe I am a glutton for punishment but I would resign Julio Jones on an incentive laden deal. He still has the it factor when he is on the field and the opposing team has to account for him at all times. He creates mismatches as a number 4 receiver

  21. Oxycondoms Says:

Anymore Seattle leftovers or ex mayfield teammates.? Licht does best with free agents when he doesn’t have to think too hard

  22. Oxycondoms Says:

    Need a tight end also

  23. A Says:

Let’s go with some young explosive quick twitch guys.

    Go Bucs!

  24. Voice of Truth Says:

I don’t imagine we are going 4 wide very often so the 4th receiver is really injury insurance – I go Watson or Perriman at FA and draft in the 5-7th round

  25. sasquatch Says:

Wouldn’t hurt to draft a developmental receiver with some speed.

  26. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    Perriman is way to unreliable

  27. Mike Johnson Says:

Whomever the BUcs can get on the cheap, Thats who it will be. You can believe that.

  28. gotbbucs Says:

I’ll throw up in my mouth if Perriman ends up on the game day roster again. What a waste of a roster spot.

  29. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

Draft a WR or 2 in the mid to late rounds. We need to get younger.

  30. sasquatch Says:

Perriman did nothing last year. Totally wasted roster spot. We need to do better.

  31. Jmarkbuc Says:

So Watson and ROJO have two rings..

    Whoulda thunk it.

  32. Mike S Says:

Bring back Watson for depth and special teams. They like that Thompkins kid. Geiger is there too.

Then again I don’t think we’re going to see a lot of 4 WR spread formations.

I have a feeling we’re going to see a RB and a TE get picked up in the draft.

  33. 80forBrady Says:

If he’s healed up now, Bring back Cyril Grayson ! He made some great plays.

Anxious to see Thompson and Geiger play as WR5 and WR6

  34. rrsrq Says:

Xavier Smith, great hands and route runner from FAMU. He will be available round 5 (he is a sleeper, but productive)

  35. MadMax Says:

    Jayden Reed….go watch.

    4th(with a trade) or 5th

  36. MadMax Says:

    Trade down from 19

    TE Darnell Washington
    G/OT Steve Avila
    RB/Return Devon Achane
    CB/SS Mekhi Garner
    WR/Return Jayden Reed

This is doable with trades and we now have 2 competing for the return game who are more capable than anything we’ve ever had.

  37. MadMax Says:

    this is easy…

  38. Hunned100 Says:

Do not sleep on thompkins!!! I repeat do not sleep on thompkins!!!! He has the it factor!!!!!!

  39. garro Says:

    Sign Watson!

  40. adam from ny Says:

if you don’t bring perriman back…..

    bring back grayson !

  41. adam from ny Says:

he’s a free agent and can certainly stretch the field…a la scotty or perriman
