Joe Thought There Was Competition?

April 5th, 2023

“Am I invisible or something?”

Well this is very interesting. A former NFL general manager hasn’t received the edict that third-year Bucs quarterback Kyle Trask will compete for the starting job with newly arrived Baker Mayfield.

Over at The33rdTeam.com, former Vikings and Titans suit Jeff Diamond did a breakdown on what the Bucs should be looking to add in the draft in just over three weeks — three weeks!.

The way Diamond sees things, the Bucs need everything but defensive backs and linebackers. And one position Diamond thinks Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht should target is — gasp! — quarterback.

The Buccaneers have an aging roster that needs a solid draft, and they have nine picks to add talent. They should draft more offensive line help, starting with a left tackle to replace Smith and another guard. Tampa Bay needs to add depth and youth at running back, tight end and throughout the defense, including a replacement for Edwards. Drafting a developmental quarterback in the middle rounds is a good idea to add competition in the future.

Perhaps Diamond overlooked Trask? Or perhaps Diamond thinks either Mayfield or Trask (or both) won’t be around in 2024?

Joe’s really ambivalent about drafting a quarterback in the middle rounds. What’s the point? Better to draft a safety or an offensive lineman there.

If the Bucs are going to draft a quarterback this year, Joe is really hoping the Bucs bag Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker.

    JOE(S),

    BRAVO!

You’ve clearly stumbled upon your new “America’s Quarterback” schtick to stir up your readers and increase your readership/comment posts.

Your new “competition” strike-through schtick and now this angle of “questioning” any pundit that implies there isn’t a QB competition in Tampa is clearly your new attempt to stir up your readers.

SPOILER ALERT: It’s already getting old and we’re months away from the next season. My guess is if you continue doing it you’re going to lose some readership.

  2. Eric Says:

I’m confused drafting a QB in the mid rounds means there is not a “competition”! Todd Bowles seems like a coach that if he likes you personally then you play he better understand that’s the quickest way to get you fired! Everyone should be competing and the best man wins that’s how smart coaches stay employed!

  3. Beej Says:

Some of you peeps need to get out more

  4. EEK Says:

Bennett has a lot of starting experience.

If he’s around in the 5th I’d be in favor.

  5. Lt. Dan Says:

Hendon Hooker Joe? c’mon – he’s 25 years old and has a jacked up knee.

  6. 941Boltsfan Says:

Trask is being over looked by most people because Jordan Love replacing Rodgers with out questions is more talked about. The bucs should target a Developmental Qb considering we have two on the roster both potentially the starter which means we have none. Not saying go big and jump and up in the 1st round reaching though should be plenty of talent ready starters to fill holes by the time The Bucs are on the clock.

  7. Pewter Power Says:

I agree %1000 with joe. Trade back get more picks find your fist overall pick then target Hendon Hooker. I’d much rather have a quarterback redshirted a year than to suck this year and deal with a new green rookie quarterback next year. Stop waiting and develop a guy already.

Damn can we get just one drafted quarterback developed by the franchise

  8. SufferingSince76 Says:

Trask to the Future, you know what’s getting older? Your constant slamming of anyone other than Trask. The dude would not have spent two straight years as a virtual ghost if he had what it takes to be a starting NFL quarterback. Or even a backup. The only person getting stirred up is you.

  9. HC Grover Says:

I am not worried at all about a QB for some reason. From what I have seen some of the great QB come in later round picks in the draft and take a few years to get going.
We have already got a first and second round pick in Mayfield and Trask.

  10. Dooley Says:

“Drafting a developmental quarterback in the middle rounds is a good idea to add competition in the future.”

This sentiment has been expressed by commenters on this here website. Not a novel idea, get a 3 QB race going right now so when it comes time to evaluate Traskfield we’ll have another QB waiting in the wings. Why tank for Caleb, when you can draft Hooker/DTR this year with Trask having 1 more year after 2023 on his rookie deal and it being unknown whether Mayfield can earn a new deal here. Even IF Mayfield can earn another deal, that 3rd QB can compete with Trask in 2024 if Mayfield goes elsewhere for more money. Also, you’re going to at the very least need somebody to run the scout team during the regular season. This guy Jeff Diamond is apparently some sort of functioning genius, let’s add a 3rd QB because, that’s usually what most teams stock their QB room.

  11. Alanbucsfan Says:

Hendon Hooker should go to the Ravens and hook up with his fellow Tennessee alumni, Tee Martin- their QB coach.

  12. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

No thxs on chris weinke 2.0

  13. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Joe, I know you have better photos of Trask you could use….almost like you’re nudging your readers to be anti Trask.

  14. Thisisouryear!! Says:

From the tape on Levis, I honestly think he’s the QB I want. If he slips, I think we should pounce.

  15. Brandon Says:

Everyone in love with Hooker the same way they loved Bridgewater. Same guy. Same upside. He’ll be an okay player but never elite.

  16. Joe Says:

My guess is if you continue doing it you’re going to lose some readership.

***If*** Joe is losing readership, it’s about quarterback alright. A quarterback who also happened to have been an international superstar left.

  17. Joe Says:

a good idea to add competition

What’s more important? Competing for a backup job or winning games? Please.

  18. Joe Says:

Hendon Hooker Joe? c’mon – he’s 25 years old and has a jacked up knee.

Who cares about his age? A quarterback with a bum knee? Bucs had one of those before.

  19. Goatfarmer Says:

What gets old is seeing a poster with his favorite fantasy boi in his handle, who wants to see his boi play regardless of anything else. The head coich has to win, or else. Therefore he will play the players who give the team the best chance to win. If he doesn’t he is fired. What more motivation does one need, even one who has four consecutive losing seasons under his belt?

  20. RBUC Says:

I’m curious what the so-called gurus see in Bryson Young that makes him a top-5 prospect versus another player like say Stetson Bennett? Kurt Warner has a 2 part evaluation videos out on Bennett and he thinks out of ALL the QB prospects Bennett is top 3 in QB categories that matter!! Hard to evaluate QBs cause alot of what makes them great are instinctual & how that QB reacts when put in a pressure situation( it’s usually the unknown til proven). What the last 2 college seasons has shown us is head-to-head Bennett has out played every prospect he has played against which includes Young, Stroud,Hooker, and Richardson. Georgia was EXTREMELY talented at just about every position,BUT still only won because of Bennett not inspite of him! Maybe I’m crazy but I see a young Drew Brees watching Bennett play for 1) # 2) I think he helped his stock at the combine ,and 3)Bucs need to risk a pick cause a QB worth grooming won’t get past the 3rd round this upcoming draft( maybe the kid from UCLA last til the 4th) In this upcoming competition Trask needs to show ability to lead the offense cause he wreaks of lack of confidence and people just don’t follow people who are unsure of themselves!

  21. sasquatch Says:

Drafting a mid-round QB has nothing to do with the alleged competition to start. And it doesn’t hurt to develop QBs on a regular basis — you never know if you’ll get lucky and find a gem to trade or eventually become your starter. That said, we need guys at so many other positions that giving up any pick for a QB that isn’t your franchise QB doesn’t make a ton of sense this year.

If Hooker drops to round 2, I could see them going there.

  22. SlyPirate Says:

LOAD UP 21 NON-QB POSITIONS. GRAB A VET FA QB.

That strategy worked for 2x Super Bowls. We’ve never drafted a winner.

  23. Geno711 Says:

Hendon Hooker seems closer to Zach Mettenberger or Drew Lock to me than Joe Burrow.

I get the like for him, the height, the low interceptions and the Alabama game.

But he did play in one of the great offenses in college football with a great offense coach, Josh Heupel.

My perception. He reached his ceiling already.

Drew Lock threw for 44 TDs and just under 4000 yards with Josh Heupel as his offensive coordinator without the great receivers that Tennessee had last year.

  24. Rand Says:

When Head coaches tenure is based on winning it seems Bucs Head coaches have no time to develop rookie QB’s. So when the new regime takes over they want their own guy and are not usually inclined to rest their job security on a QB that wasn’t hand picked by them. Hence the real reason why Bowles is intrigued with Mayfield. He’s gone on record saying how much he’s always liked him. Trask is not his guy so he wavers in his trust with him. Trask should never have been drafted by Licht and made to wait behind the G.O.A.T. and Gab for two seasons because low and behold another regime change and Trask is on the outside looking in. People want to say that Trask isn’t worth the time because he went 3 for 8 in a meaningless mop up with mostly backup players against Atlanta’s #1 defense still on the field. That’s ridiculous but most uninformed fans clearly can’t seem to use their own deductive logic but rather mimic what they hear from NFL pundits that are driven to drum up controversy. If we draft another QB this season, especially with our #1 pick, he’ll probably be relegated to #3 QB while the same cycle will continue if Bowles is fired after the season and a new regime comes in. I think we should pickup a FA QB and wait till next season to possibly let the new regime draft their own guy. JMO

  25. Brian Says:

I’m with you Joe! Draft Hendon Hooker!

  26. Crack3rK Says:

Great pic. He looks like my lawn guy.

  27. Winny Testaverde Says:

I was dubious of this draft pic…until now. He looks like an Alpha Male who chews gum and kicks arse…and is all outta gum! Watch out NFL…KT is coming for ya!

  28. BuckeyeBuck Says:

No way they draft a QB this year. That would be saying they wasted a draft pick on Trask. If he doesn’t work out after getting a shot this year, then maybe next year.

  29. BuckeyeBuck Says:

Hey Joe, there will be a competition. They didn’t draft Trask in R2 to throw away a
pick. Mayfield wasn’t drafted R! because he is trash. John Dorsey used his Rq picks on Mayfield and Denzel Ward, R2 Nick Chubb. So basically you have two QB’s with value but a different skill set. Mayfield thrives outside the pocket, Trask is a traditional pocket passer. I pity Canales gameplanning something that would work for both

  30. Craig Says:

There will be a competition and unless Trask blows the roof off he will not start.

That probably won’t matter because he will end up starting later in the season, after Mayfly blows it.

Mayfly can scramble, but he can’t scramble and pass accurately at the same time. A shaky line will cause his interceptions to rise and he will be sat down, if he hasn’t hurt his shoulder by then.

  31. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

I have to laugh at all of this. The Trask hate is pretty absurd.

Mayfield is a bum. #1 pick in 2024 is a lock.

  32. David Says:

Trask will defeat Baker in a true competition.

  33. Goatfarmer Says:

Lots of crow to be served in the 2023 season, and I hope it’s me eating it. That will mean Bloweszo shocked the world and became competent, and whoever plays QB plays well. And the defense actually plays with some discipline and remembers assignments, and how to tackle (looking at you, Diva White).

But maroons who continue to insist that it’s a rigged deck, or that poor Trask never had a shot, are so full of fecal conspiracy their eyes are brown.

The head coach is on a scalding hot seat and knows it. He’s a 4-seasons-in-a-row loser. The Glazers will not accept 5 in a row. He will play who gives the team the best chance to win. If he doesn’t, he should be fired now and will definitely be fired in January of 2024.

For the sake of all fans, I hope he proves me wrong.
