Giovani Bernard Hangs It Up

April 28th, 2023

Done.

If you happen to bump into JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman in the coming days and see him wearing a black armband, be kind, please.

What happened? Ira’s favorite Bucs player decided to hang it up.

Backup running back Giovani Bernard retired today, per several sources. The last time Joe remembered Bernard making a play was when he botched a fake punt and fumbled in a loss to the Bengals late last season.

Bernard then got all bent out of shape after the game when reporters dared to try to find out what happened on the play. Imagine!

A second-round pick of Cincinnati in 2013. he played all but the last two seasons in Tampa with the Bengals.

He was done 2 years ago

  2. Dom N. Nick Says:

He made the NFL, had a career and left without any permanent injuries (that we know about). He can be proud. Good Luck Gio!

  3. D-Rok Says:

I wish Gio could’ve landed on the Bucs when he still had some juice left. He was pretty good in Cincy. Same could be said for Julio Jones and few other vets.

  4. BUCman Says:

This is a Cincy story, not a BUCS story.

  5. BillyBucco Says:

The shelf life of a RB in the NFL is so short.
That’s why we should take one every year.

  6. Duane Says:

Extremely negative and uncalled for spin on what is at stake this year … as if Bowles has effed up every defense since he came to the Bucs, which could not be further from the truth. In fact he put up two top ten, even top five defenses out of the last three years, and slipped a bit to no. 16 last season, but that is not a fall off the cliff give him the hook this instant kind of failure that JBF and the usual idiot commenters like to do here at JBF.

Does Todd Bowles need to improve the defense in 2024? Yes, of course, anything less than no. 1 in the league can use some improvement. I think it is entirely reasonable for Bowles to produce another top 10, maybe even top 5 defense this year, especially if Shaq Barrett resumes his prior form, JTS progresses satisfactorily, other new guys including our first round draft pick also contribute this year.

But if the defense stays somewhere in the middle of the pack, or regresses to the bottom third of the league, then yes Bowles will be in serious hot water, and rightfully so.

As always with everything, the NFL means not for long, and what have you done for me in the last two minutes?

  7. Duane Says:

Oops, somehow got off track and thought I was commenting on the post following about Todd Bowles “no more excuses” post by JBF.

So my comment above about Bowles is of course meaningless in this threat … with no ability to edit comments, when you look dumb you stay looking dumb forever! LOL!

  8. hammerhead Says:

Gio is a class act. Read his instagram announcing his retirement. Humble and grateful.
All the best to you, you had a good career.

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Hey Jason…….

    No more ex-Bengals………EVER!

    Jeez

  10. SB~LV Says:

    What Buc50 said
No reflection on him or his career pre Bucs but he was a broken football player

  11. Day 1-76 Says:

Know when to hang ’em up…two years too late.

  12. Jack Clark Says:

Very happy for this powerful man, I hope he has a very lucrative NFL career

  13. Jack Clark Says:

    whoops wrong article 😅

Thank you for your service Bernard!

  14. CBWells Says:

Whew….!!! I was wondering where you were going with that Duane Says!!!😂

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

Duane, it’s never a bad time to tell the truth about the Bloweszo. Personally I enjoy reading it. Helps ease my desire to find one of Diva’s dead horses and beat the hell out of it.

  16. BuxfaninTX Says:

Another member of the TB12 geezer club is gone

  17. Dom N. Nick Says:

Speaking of the TB12 geezer club, crazy Antonio Brown, former TB12 housemate and photoshopped wannabe Gisele bed-mate announced his unretirement today to join the Ravens.

Why anyone would want that wacko, quitter, cancer on their team is beyond me.

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

Happy retirement from football Gio. You had a decent career. Time for the 2nd chapter in your life.

  19. SOEbuc Says:

Roschon Johnson in the third if Canalas is legit ground and pound. Johnson was an inside 30 visit at OBP.

  20. ElioT Says:

[You know, Joe has more important things to do (like what Joe is doing right now interviewing Calijah Kancey in the media room) than friggin babysit a moderation queue to make sure a whiny little girl like you doesn’t have your precious comments approved in seconds. But if you really want to have something to b!tch about, go ahead and post another comment just like the one Joe deleted here. Joe will give you a reason to b!tch because you’ll be gone. Cool? — Joe]

  21. ElioT Says:

There’s a website called Jim Pirates Enthusiast. I recommend y’all go there

  22. Bee Says:

Jenna Laine accosted Gio unnecessarily after the game. She was very rude and disrespectful. She’s the worst and her questions are typically nonsensical drivel. Players are human and deserve respect. He had a terrible game but didn’t deserve to be talked to like that. Pat McAfee had a great breakdown of what happened. Trash take Joe.

  23. Bojim Says:

I was really trying to like him but he never did sht. Great mustache though.

  24. Winny Testaverde Says:

Jenna Lame aka Ms. ButterFace will have to ambush another gutshot player moving forward. There will likely be plenty of them in 2023.

  25. Letsbucinggo Says:

    Wasted story!

  26. captivajim Says:

he was done 2+ yrs ago…took up a roster spot

  27. DJB Says:

OK, so now who will take the fake punt snaps?
