Commandos Could Be Moving Montez Sweat

April 27th, 2023

Available?

Regular readers know how much Joe craves sacks. Almost as much as cold Big Storm Brewing beer.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles needs wins. One way to get them is for his defense to rack up sacks.

Some believe the Bucs will draft an edge rusher tonight at No. 19. That seems almost like a panic move for two reasons. The first is rookie pass rushers rarely make an impact. Does Bowles have enough rope to survive a rookie pass rusher being, well, just a guy in 2023?

Also, the Bucs in the past two drafts have used their first pick on a defensive lineman/pass rusher. So make it three years in a row? That’s a Matt Millen move.

Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett trying to return from a blown Achilles, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka trying to get more than four sacks in a season, and Logan Hall trying to prove he has an NFL roster spot —  this is what Bowles will bank his head coaching career on?

(And then there is the stat Joe knows annoys many folks. Bowles is 0-6 in developing an edge rusher/defensive end who was drafted under his watch in the third round or higher.)

So why not get a veteran? Someone who has shown he can get five or more sacks? Dan Graziano of BSPN believes there is such a player out there.

Graziano noted that Commandos defensive end Montez Sweat may be being dangled by Washington. It seems Washington and Sweat are at an impasse about a new contract. Sweat’s contract is up after the 2023 season.

Well, if Washington is trying to use Sweat as bait to move up in the draft, then he is available. So rather than burn the No. 19 pick hoping on an edger rusher, why not trade for Sweat?

Last year Sweat had eight sacks and 28 quarterback hits, and he’s 26 years old.

Licht has had good luck trading for pass rushers. Remember when he stole Jason Pierre-Paul from the Giants for a third-round pick?

Joe would much rather the Bucs get Sweat than bank on a rookie edge rusher. Something tells Joe that Bowles would, too.

  1. BA’s Red Pen Says:

We shouldn’t pick up any player the Commodes want to flush.

  2. sasquatch Says:

Key question: how much does he wanna be paid? Not trading for him if we can’t extend him.

Also, is he a fit? They make the point all the time that they’re not talent collectors, they’re about building the best 53. Sh!tbags aren’t welcome unless you’re a difference maker to win a Super Bowl.

  3. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

The commanchos are also not picking up the 5th yr option on Mr. Chase “I want Brady” Young either.

  4. Delusional Intelligence Says:

Yes, yes & yes. Would love to see him in pewter. I’d even be willing to trade Devin “I wanna be a 100 Million Dollar Man” White for him.

While all the questioned posed about Montez are valid, remember, Washington Pigskins (Should have been the name IMHO), are a dumpster fire of an organization, albeit a 6 Billion Dollar dumpster fire.

  5. NDoGS burner Account Says:

Trading a first rounder for a player with one year left on his contract is going full retard. No way.

  6. Esteban85 Says:

I dunno I kinda like the Commanchos

  7. chark Says:

Sweat is a head case but talented. He doesnt like being yelled at. Youd have to make sure he is a locker room fit. I dont trust him

  8. chark Says:

I hope we draft 2 Dls in our first 5 picks

  9. Fansince76 Says:

They need to draft FOSKEY, he will produce just like he did in college.

  10. bob in valrico Says:

Problem is they are drafting the wrong guy all too often. We not do need a pass rushing specialist like Noah spence and quite possibly JTS. We need a player that is stout enough that he doesn’t get pushed around and can stop the run also. Much like Anthony Nelson who developed into a damn good DE.

  11. Kgh4life Says:

    Sweat isn’t worth a 1st round pick.

  12. Joe in Michigan Says:

Why does Washington want to trade him? Is he a skinny Swaggy Baker? Sweat got kicked out of Michigan State in college, not an easy thing to do, if you can play football.

  13. SB~LV Says:

    Bless his heart!
    Shaq is toast
The Washington Commodes pick before the Bucs , it’s early I don’t get the trade up angle?
That said I won’t mind giving the 3rd round pick for him if a contract extension comes with the trade

  14. Danati1 Says:

Montez runs a 4.4 for a DE and with 8 sacks last year..he is talented and could help the BUCS. I believe we wouldn’t even have to give up our first since he is a one year rental. Maybe we give our 3rd again for another talented DE. Jason can make it happen

  15. Eric Says:

He wants a new contract now! But he will forget that to play for Bowles ok! Pure fantasy football!

  16. Big Z Says:

No way is he a first rounder. More like a 3 and 5. I do like him and wanted us to draft him.

  17. Allbuccedup Says:

Already got one Diva that wants a new contract why would you trade for another.

  18. Brandon Says:

Here’s the faulty logic, Joe. Much of the appeal of a rookie draft pick playing for our team is their rookie contract, cheap labor. If Sweat costs a premium pick and then we turn around and give him a top dollar contract, we take a huge cap hit AND lose a premium pick. It’s Team Building 101 and you and most of your readers don’t seem to understand it. You need picks and their cheap rookie deals to build a competitive roster.

  19. ATLBuc Says:

Not a one! Maybe a three

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Forgetting about the money…..we just don’t have it…..ask Devin White.

  21. Buc4evr Says:

I would be ok with that move, but not for a first round pick. Washington can have a third rounder and JTS in trade. LOL.

  22. Duane Says:

Joe wasn’t suggesting trading our no. 19 pick for Sweat – he just said the Bucs should not waste a no. 19 pick on a rookie pass rusher when he’s not likely to contribute this year.

Joe was just suggesting a trade for Sweat. I think that is something that Licht and Bowles would certainly consider. Whether they want to, who knows. But it could be a sensible deal.

  23. Beej Says:

Sweat did just as well as a rookie as he did in his 4th year, very consistent

  24. SB~LV Says:

When are the Gboyz gonna do their “blind squirrel “
and make Ronde the GM ?

  25. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Jose, what time would you estimate the Bucs will turn in their card tonight?

  26. Rand Says:

all that for an average of 7 sacks per season? GTFO

  27. Infomeplease Says:

All will be revealed! Very soon!

  28. garro Says:

    Get on the Phone Jason!
Then call JPP and see if he wants to come home on the cheap!

  29. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Canales gets 1st pick prference and it is Oline and boy do we need it. C’mon Bucs move up enough to take Jones out of Georgia a sure fire starter and heck move up again in 2nd round and take Washington the TE from Georgia-these additions to our Oline will definitely create running lanes aplenty and give Canales the necessary tools to implement his new offense with positive impact.

  30. Destinjohnny Says:

We don’t have a pass rusher on the roster

  31. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Since both players want to play for a new contract and a new team. Trade Devin White for Montez Sweat.

  32. Dooley Says:

I prefer we add a rookie to the OLB rotation and not over complicate things. We’d be asking Sweat to transition from 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB with the latter having broader job duties than what Sweat would be coming from in Washington. Also remember him putting on some weight after being drafted a few years back to fill his frame out to be durable enough to play as a 4-3 DE.

We’d also have to figure who’s snaps would Sweat get a share of? JTS is going to get his reps to prove if he’s worth holding onto in his 3rd year, we just paid Nelly so he’s for sure going to gets his snaps, and Shaq’s rehab is the only thing that makes me question his availability, but he’s also been invested in so if he’s available Sweat isn’t “beating” him out for the job.

Not fully sold we’ll draft an OLB in the 1st round either, and even if the plan turns out to be wait and grab a player like Yaya Diaby I’d be fine adding him to the competition with Gil, Snowden, & Hamicler to see who can earn that 4th spot behind our top 3 guys. Facilitating our pass rush moving forward, should be about the sum of the parts and not placing the expectations on 1 guys shoulder/workload.

  33. Dooley Says:

“Then call JPP and see if he wants to come home on the cheap!”

    @Garro

JPP was apparently at BA’s Charity event, as far fetched as JPP coming back may sound it isn’t totally off the table. I’d take him back just to have him keep a foot to JTSs’ arse and teach him “thee way” to be a difference making edge defender.

  34. RustyRhinos Says:

NO, kidding a Head Coach is needing wins….Say it ain’t so…
Who would have thought a Head football Coach would need to WIN games.. hmm We could always trade draft capital for Sweat. The last WFT player we got in FA was “Half-Sack”.. Sweat is a good player, but why would the WFT get rid of a good DL player?
Maybe the WFT Head Coach is not as worried about WINS??

  35. gbobucsfan Says:

No way that he is worth a 1st rounder. Give them White straight up and we might have a deal. haha

  36. Nicholas Carlson Says:

    Love this idea

  37. Pewter Power Says:

If Todd Bowles gets fired it will not be because of his defense. It will because his offense still sucks and he can’t rally his troops, it will be because he sucks at every other aspect of being a head coach. He’d have to show he is nothing more than a coordinator

  38. Joe Says:

Jose, what time would you estimate the Bucs will turn in their card tonight?

9:40-10 p.m.? Complete and total guess.

  39. jimm Says:

    beej

Sweat did just as well as a rookie as he did in his 4th year, very consistent

or no development. on the player? coaches? system?

plus new responsibilities (qualities, skills) required in new position
    (olb vs 4-3 DE)

  40. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

    Balderdash!!!

  41. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs had better find a pass rusher from somewhere. You gotta be kiddin yourself to believe Shaq is returning anything close to himself. And Tryon well..Ok movin on. Find some pass rushers Bowles!!

  42. JA Says:

    Commanders—Commandos
    Tomato’s — Tom(ah)to’s
    What’s in a word?

  43. Dick LeBeau Jr. Says:

What I read yesterday kind of went in another direction. The Commandos not picking up Young’s option because Sweat proved to be more effective than Young and Young needs to prove himself, but more than likely they keep Sweat and let Young test FA next year. I mean, Sweat currently isn’t pulling a White, so we’ll see I guess.

  44. Rayjay1122 Says:

The Washington Cannabinoids want to deal Sweat? Hmmm I have not noticed much success drafting Edge so maybe this is not absurd.

  45. HC Grover Says:

Commanders…what a stupid name. Redskins was better.

  46. Big Marlon B Says:

Interesting stuff in Washington. They invested heavily in their front 7….now Sweat may be available, and they declined Chase Young’s 5th year option. Strange.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

Grover at least they finally have an actual name….it was stupid to be called the Washington Football Team for 2 years. Commanders isn’t much better though you’re right.

    Bucs can’t afford Sweat….

Draft that OT @19 and let’s move right along in the draft.

    Go Bucs!!!!

  48. Goatfarmer Says:

Diva for Sweat. With some chump change exchanged. Rivera would know how to control the drama princess and develop him.

  49. Pryda … sec147 Says:

I’d like him to pass rush for us I’d feel much better going into the season maybe Throw in Devin and we swap 1st

  50. Tucker Says:

Lol well hate to break to you but the bucs are rebuilding so yeah you want a rookie at (choose the position) to develop exactly how you need them to be and cost savings. If they were pushing for a Superbowl, which they are not, I could agree with that line of thinking but they need to get younger and cheaper to balance out the checkbook to make a push again.

  51. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

O line first or bpa don’t reach or get stupid
