CBS: Bucs Teetering On Quarterback Purgatory

April 25th, 2023

Gators QB Anthony Richardson.

The Bucs had a losing record last year and Tom Brady retired. Unless new quarterback Baker Mayfield turns around his career, it’s going to be ugly in these parts.

That’s the way Will Brinson of CBS looks at the State of the Bucs.

Brinson believes the Bucs are on the verge of quarterback purgatory, when your starter is nothing more than a backup and the team isn’t dreadful enough to get it in position to draft a good quarterback.

Tampa Bay should draft a quarterback now, Brinson says.

Why — No more Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield on a one-year deal. The Bucs could be in QB Purgatory but they have a recent Super Bowl and don’t really have the answer at the position. Baker behind a questionable OL with Todd Bowles running things is tough to picture, which is a great excuse for drafting [Anthony] Richardson if he somehow falls.

Joe sure as hell hopes the Bucs don’t even sniff Anthony Richardson. Joe simply does not understand how otherwise sober people are talking about him being a first-round pick much less top-five. He stinks as a quarterback right now.

Remember, Joe’s idea of a quarterback is a man who can throw the ball with precision and accuracy. Richardson was none of that at Florida.

Joe has no earthly idea how anyone could have watched Richardson in the second half of his final college game, a loss to Florida State, and proclaim this guy to be the next Johnny Unitas. He. Was. Awful.

And it wasn’t like Florida State’s defense was special. Richardson had four completions in the second half in a one-score game (nine completions total). And folks think he’s a top-10 pick? Are people on dope?

That wasn’t Richardson’s only bad game. Go watch him against Kentucky. Nah-ah-ah!

Yes, he blew up in a win over Utah to open the season and Joe was on his hype train. Richardson quickly went downhill after that.

Only way Joe is good with the Bucs drafting Richardson is if he’s a third-round pick. In Bill Parcells’ seven requirements for drafting a quarterback, Richardson doesn’t meet one.

If Richardson is a top-five pick, then our standards as proud Americans have cratered to unthinkable depths.

Joe, we need to give Trask and Mayfield a chance behind a solid NFL o line, adaptable play caller and QB who is an occasional threat to run, just to see what we have on the team.

QB whisperer BA was behind the Trask pick and also must have influenced the Mayfield signing. Let’s see what we have first before grasping at straws.

  3. Colin in Canada Says:

Trask was way better then Richardson at Florida. Lets see what he can do and if he sucks we tank for 2024.

  4. SufferingSince76 Says:

How many user names do some of you guys have?

Anyone who watched Gator games last year knows AR is overhyped. The only reason he started last year was because Jones transferred, imo.

  5. SB~LV Says:

    Oh we know it well!
10 years of Trent Dilfer and Jameis ….

  6. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Trade diva white for Karen rodgers. Drama/ qb problem solved, sort of…. As we’ve all seen sometimes old dudes can ball out, and ‘Karen’ can still play! The Bucs got a really good contract guy, and a gm with huevoes. Just do it!

  7. BucfaninMi Says:

Baker is gonna do good, he HAS to and he’s the type of guy to get it done. He’ll play lights out this season. Hell he got the putrid Browns to the playoffs.

  8. ATLBuc Says:

AR 15 would be great in Canales’ run oriented offense. If he can coach up Geno Smith, he can coach up anyone!! I’ve seen Richardson make some great throws only not consistent enough. Canales can coach him up

  9. Beej Says:

A good line turns bad qb into an average qb. The more time you can give them the better

  10. Dom N. Nick Says:

What does Joe thinks of Jets stealing QB Aaron Rodgers?

Basically a swap of 1st round picks with Pack moving up very slightly + a 2nd round pick + a lower conditional pick.

Not as costly as some thought for a HOF QB a season removed from back to back MVPs.

    All-Pro rates among first-round picks, 25-year sample
    Position Drafted All-Pros All-Pro rate
    LB 87 23 26.4%
    S 35 9 25.7%
    C 12 3 25.0%
    G 32 7 21.9%
    OT 84 16 19.0%
    DL 170 28 16.5%
    RB 96 15 15.6%
    CB 91 14 15.4%
    WR 99 15 15.2%
    TE 28 4 14.3%
    QB 57 3 5.3%

“Franchise” QB’s are VERY hard to find. WINNING QB’s…like Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer are more readily available. We traded for the first and drafted the second only to see him leave and win somewhere else. And as much as I now admire and respect Trent he came out of college a cocky know it all arsehole. Give him major credit though. He matured and figured things out. If we draft another QB in the first round could it be Trent…or Jameis II…failures with the Bucs but moving on to success elsewhere. Verdict still out on JW but there is no doubt drafting him #1 in the overall draft turned out to be a major mistake!
And it’s not like people didn’t see it coming.

Just look at the tremendous falloff in success rates by position.

  12. JN Says:

First things first, we need to fix the lines of scrimmage on BOTH sides of the ball.

  13. Scott Says:

I doubt we grab a QB in the first

  14. stpetebucfan Says:

    @JN

Agree about making sure the trenches are great!

  15. Bojim Says:

    QB next year.

  16. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

The verdict is definitely in on JW. It was rendered three years ago when the Bucs let the Saints take over as babysitter.

  17. HC Grover Says:

The Big Ugly is here. The only good will be getting rid of Bowles.

  18. Buc4evr Says:

I would sign Matt Ryan to mentor Trask and Mayfield. I watched AR15 at UF. Lots of athletic talent but lots of brain farts. No way would I sign this guy. He is a project that the Bucs could never develop. OT in the first round, then build the trenches on both lines.

  19. HC Grover Says:

According to SP But we should pic in the order.

  20. Greg Says:

Joe there have been plenty of examples of QBs that had great college careers and fail in the nfl. Its not about where you come from as much as where you go. Guys like Richardson are the future. Brady is the greatest QB of all time but hard to find pocket QBs that read the whole field in college. The NFL is changing and Richardson fit perfectly for a team that knows how to use him.

All that being said the Bucs will draft the tackle from Tennessee if hes there.

  21. Larrd Says:

If he’s there, I would take him and trust my coaching staff to develop him. If you can’t do that, get a new coaching staff.

Losing out on a single late first round pick won’t kill you. Hitting on a superstar qb in the late first round can carry you for a decade. I like Baker and Trask, but it is worth the gamble.

He’d be great on special teams, at least!

  22. Craig Says:

Richardson guarantees QB purgatory. He really is only a physical specimen and nothing, so far, says he can be a consistent 1st down maker.

Flashing QBs are only good on highlight reels, not in the win column.

  23. JN Says:

You have to trust your scouts and follow your board. Do NOT overdraft.

Citing recent examples – Karen Rodgers end of rd 1, Pat Mahomes mid-1st round, Lamar Jackson end of round 1, Justin Fields mid 1st rounder… you do not need to be drafting atop the 1st round. Then there are examples of picks not in round 1 – Brady, Wilson, Purdy last season (Mr. Irrelevant)…

These guys get paid to evaluate and draft and they still screw up. Our GM is 500 at best when it comes to draft and this franchise is abysmal when it comes to drafting QBs.

No doubt AR has an incredible ceiling, off the charts talent and physical ability. So did Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, Jameis Winston, Trent Dilfer, Akili Smith, the list goes on and on and on…

TRUST YOUR BOARD/SCOUTS AND DO NOT OVER DRAFT. That goes for all positions and OT as well! Being at 19 scares me in a draft with only about 10-12 elite players.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I honestly do not know of a QB worth taking in the first 3 rounds this year. And I don’t think Jason Licht would make that mistake, so if they do take one, it would likely be a Bowles decision.

But Bowles is a defensive coach…that’s his bread and butter. I don’t believe he would take a QB either…simply because he knows he doesn’t have the time to develop one (not that he could).

So…I’m thinking there will be a run on OL just before we pick…so Licht might trade up a few spots to get the one he wants…unless Bowles has his eyes on a DL guy.

  25. Woodenman Says:

Dominick they also got 1 or 2 in 2024 for Roger’s plus the 50 mil a year he makes no thanks

  26. sasquatch Says:

Richardson is only a first round pick for a team willing to accept the boom or bust risk. A team that is already good enough that can afford to burn a first rounder and give AR a couple years to develop under good coaching. The floor is low and the ceiling is high.

The Bucs are not one of the teams that can afford to waste a first rounder.

  27. matthew veal Says:

I know Joe has to sell newspapers, but picking a qb is a loser mostly.

Hooker is a maybe at best, but running backs at least give you a few years.

I’m sick of reading about draftong a qb personally.
God help us if we listen to any of these losers. We need to win, win now and
And lower expectations about some of our draft picks in recent years.
Once this draft is over I want a few months of silence. No tanking either. What a waste Winston was.

  28. SlyPirate Says:

    matthew veal …

I’m with you on the QB talk. Why draft another mediocre, unproven QB? The Bucs have won 2xSB with vets. Stick with what works.

  29. Lakeland Steve Says:

The Bucs overall have made decent decisions in the draft in recent years. The Bucs have a plan and unless something miraculous happens it doesn’t involve a QB in round one this year. Let’s just get the best players we can and build this team. Then get a QB, hopefully we can pick up someone in a trade or free agency next year if Baker or Trask don’t work out who is competent enough to get us winning.

  30. Greg Says:

If you compare Trasks college film vs AR, Trask is clearly better. I don’t see a qb in this draft that’s going to match him out of the gate. Maybe he’sa bust, maybe not. He was sitting behind Tom Brady. He was going nowhere near the field during that time frame. This is the smartest thing JL could have done. We’ll see.

    It’s all a crap shoot.

  31. Stormy Says:

Jameis Winston, Trent Dilfer, Johnny Manziel, Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, Vince Young, Akili Smith all had one thing in common – maturity and or intelligence issues.

Teams get way too enamored by the physical profile and fail to recognize that the guy doesn’t have it between the ears.

That’s why Richardson scares me. Everything I’ve seen on him so far points to a lower than desirable football IQ. No thanks.

  32. 1#bucsfan Says:

No to AR15. Hoping they build the trenches. We need to get way more physical n what better way then with some big big uglies lol. Bucs played soft last year we need some suh n jpp types. I’m also for drafting that LB from Clemson. He could potentially fill to needs with coming off the edge n replacing diva cry baby DW45 who I used to be a big fan of not so much anymore. Lol

  33. Deuce Goose Says:

Richardson, cam newton by another name.
    He’s a runner…, a back.
Thats where he should be…, and if he had good hands, a receiver.

  34. Rand Says:

all Joe wants is a splash play

  35. Wild Bill Says:

I don’t see Baker or Trask playing much worse than Brady did last season. He played scared all season and had concrete pocket feet. If either Baker or Trask can extend plays with their feet they should be an upgrade.

  36. JeffreyLane77 Says:

This is a crazy draft. This is the first time I can remember when there wasn’t one consensus this QB has it all in the draft. Every QB seems to have at least one flaw in this draft. One guy is too short. Another guy is injured and 26yrs old. This other guy is a weirdo who has bad interviews he’s also too jacked up and eats banana peels. On and on.

  37. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I would say we aren’t teetering at all. We are there.
