Best Available On The Board

April 28th, 2023

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

So Round 1 is done. Now it’s on to Rounds 2-3 tonight. Who’s on the board that the Bucs can use?

Joe will only focus on positions of need here.

Tight ends

This is a deep tight ends draft and only one was selected yesterday. Bruising Mike Mayer is there as well as hulking Darnell Washington (who some teams have flagged in medical evals). Both those guys can block their @ss off, though Mayer is a smaller tight end at 250 pounds. Luke Musgrave is another tight end the Bucs may be interested as well as Iowa’s Sam LaPorta.

Offensive line

Joe mentioned this on Twitter last night and it bears repeating: Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht built one of the best if not the best offensive line in the NFL that also won a Super Bowl with just one first-round pick on the line. That same player is still on the roster.

So no need to freak that the Bucs were unable to land a tackle when the run started last night. Here are names of good offensive linemen to watch tonight: Joe Tippmann (Wisconsin), Steve Avila (TCU), Cody Mauch (North Dakota State), O’Cyrus Torrence (Florida) and John Michael Schmitz (Minnesota), Matthew Bergeron (Syracuse) and Dawand Jones (Ohio State).

Edge rushers

Keion White (Georgia Tech), BJ Ojulari (LSU).

Other players Joe thinks could help the Bucs include safety Brian Branch (Alabama), linebacker Trenton Simpson (Clemson) and quarterback Hendon Hooker (Tennessee).

The Bucs, barring a trade, pick at Nos. 50 and 82 tonight. They should be able to get at least one decent player.

Hopefully we can get a 3rd pick today via trade.

  2. Allbuccedup Says:

Not a whole lot of excitement in Ybor.

  3. FortMyersDave Says:

I see an OT from 1-AA: Cody Mauch. Isn’t this the type of guy Licht tries to angle for? Anyhow OL and TE seem like reasonable picks and there is a chance Licht tries to do something to reclaim that lost 4th rounder as well via a trade down.

  4. Christopher Schiefen Says:

He’s Baby Sapp. That’s was embarrassing from the fans.

  5. Dooley Says:

    @Allbuccedup

They probably don’t watch much football on saturday’s lol

  6. PSL Bob Says:

FMDave, I agree. Licht seems to be a master at finding good o-linemen at small schools.

  7. Tim Says:

I love Cody Mauch. I hope they grab him. Also Joe, at ILB, I think Drew Sanders from Arkansas is still available.

  8. Pryda…sec147 Says:

For all there was a crazy thunderstorm rolling into Tampa sourness the draft time really killed the draft parties plus Lightning elimination game too I can see why the Ybor place didn’t loook as packed as previous parties

  9. Ward Says:

I wanted Michael Mayer at 19 but happy with the potential of Cancey. This has to be a bad sign for Logan Hall. No way we can trade up more than a couple spots tonight, but if we can land Mayer or Darnell Washington I’m happy. I’d be ok with Matt Bergeron too.

  10. Lt. Dan Says:

    Hahahaha…”who – who – who – who…”

  11. SB~LV Says:

Cody Mauch is a TRIP !
I’d love to have his play and personality on the roster

  12. 1#bucsfan Says:

Jason deserves all the respect when it comes to drafting O-lineman. He’s had some trouble with D-line. Jury is still out on hall tho. No bust label for him after just 1 season. Now JTS on the other hand he’s flirting with it. Hopefully the Casey pick n hall breaking out redeems the JTS n Spence picks. He prob picks O-Line later then we all think to just develop n is prob good with who we have on the roster n maybe he’s sees a few prospects in next years draft. Keep filling those needs with the best player available that’s all we can hope for

  13. Steven007 Says:

Wow, these are actual football fans?! I simply can’t believe that a group of supposed football fans have no idea who this guy was. One more thing that reminds me of Donald. I remember he didn’t have great name recognition coming out either.

  14. JN Says:

I really like what JL did in Rd 1… keep focusing on trenches tonight. The team needs juice on both sides of ball and got that with Kancey for the D. Hoping they can get TE Washington and an OT tonight or going OG and OT. The C from Minnesota is a baller too. Wish we had another pick tonight.

  15. Tim Says:

Pick 50 (or likely need to trade up) Cody Mauch OT ND St.
Pick 82 Sam Laporta TE Iowa

  16. Tim Says:

@Steven007 Maybe I follow the draft stuff closer than others (likely) but I remember draft guys using the “generational” label on Donald coming out. Saying he was the best 3 technique since Sapp.

  17. Usfbuc Says:

Probably no way to make it happen but Jones and Torrence are both still out there and could give us a monster of a right side of the line.

There are a number of players who could help us out right away still out there.

  18. Tvan101 Says:

I hope we move up and get Branch.

  19. garro Says:

Mauch and Schmitz and Branch in that order please Mr Jason.

I really really like the toothless ginger!

  20. Rob Hamada Says:

Bergeron from Syracuse is a 3 year starter at LT.

  21. SomeDudeAtWork Says:

Joe wants a third QB to really complicate things. Bucs will draft a QB – but it will be a day 3 developmental guy to run the scout team.

  22. Mike Says:

Bergeron is the target I think, but I would be good with a lot of the players still out there so we will see how it shakes out.

  23. gotbbucs Says:

Guys I’m targeting the rest of the way would be Tyler Steen, Cody Mauch, Antonio Johnson, Sam LaPorta, Chase Brown, Roschon Johnson, YaYa Diaby, and there’s about a million CB’s to choose from.

  24. SomeDudeAtWork Says:

Watching the film on this Musgrave kid – the size-speed-hands combination jumps off the screen at you. But for a guy that big seems to fold like a bad poker hand on contact – anyone every see him break tackles? One hit and down every time.

Could be Gronk spoiled us – we’re used to seeing him bully everyone all the time.

Musgrave is more of a Kelsey type – part TE, part ballerina. Probably dresses in the same effeminate fashions.

  25. RBUC Says:

I think Licht & Co have their eye on Stetson Bennett got a feeling he won’t be there day 3 thou

  26. Usfbuc Says:

If you want a TE who breaks tackles Laporta is the guy you want, PFF said he had the fifth most broken tackles by a TE since they started tracking stats

  27. Tim Says:

If we take a Day 3 flyer on a QB, I’d like to see Jaren Hall from BYU or Stetson Bennett from UGA

  28. Big Marlon B Says:

I was surprised, as I thought other positions would be targeted there. But anyone who asked who he is clearly doesn’t follow much of the pre-draft process.

  29. Usfbuc Says:

Stetson Bennett could wind up going undrafted but if we want him we should be able to take him in the 6th or 7th rd

  30. Mike C Says:

Steven007 “embarrassing for these fans” I am one of the biggest buc fans you will meet, and outside of a few superstar collage players I couldn’t tell you squat about the collage game, to many teams, to many blow outs, just now starting to get a decent postseason, and well over 50% of the time collage players don’t ever do anything in the NFL. So for me knowing who is who and what in collage is just a bunch of useless information. Not EmBArRaSsInG at all that I don’t keep track of the best players on 162 teams.

  31. Obvious Says:

Well, thanks for posting it Joe’s.

Not the crowd reaction that we all were hoping for but at least they weren’t to the point of sleeping. WHERE’S THE PASSION? Boring crowd. We’ll have to do better at getting the crowd PUMPED UP next year….
    1) Joe doesn’t tell fans how to be fans.
    2) Joe doesn’t expect fans to be serious draftniks dialed into ACC football.
    3) You can like a pick but not cheer in the moment because you preferred a couple of other players.
    4) Probably would have seen an identical reaction if the Bucs drafted T.J. Watt instead of O.J. Howard in 2017.

  32. Tim Says:

Collage…isn’t that what you do in like 3rd grade? Just kidding.

  33. Mr. Editor Says:

    What about RBs?

  34. Brandon Says:

I’m just glad it wasn’t the one-legged old man, Hendon Hooker. Funny how everybody’s favorite franchise QB didn’t get picked in round 1.

  35. MadMax Says:

Torrence or Avila ALL DAY LONG….if they’re gone and TE D. Washington is there…….there it is.

  36. MadMax Says:

oh, thats right, 3rd rd too,,, thats where Achane comes in!

  37. MadMax Says:

Trade back into the bottom of the 2nd….we have some later rd’s to work with.

  38. MadMax Says:

BTW, now would be a good time to trade Diva White….a 2nd and 4th?

  39. Mike Johnson Says:

Hope we try for an OT today. It is an area of great need.

  40. confido75 Says:

I don’t care who they go after, just get some solid above average O-Line depth that can patch the holes on the line. If you don’t win in the trenches, you can’t run or throw the ball.

  41. RealBucsFan Says:

    Trade up for O’CYRUS

  42. unbelievable Says:

    That video is rough lol

  43. IE Buc Says:

Please draft Mauch. Another 2nd rounder can be had if we trade White. We need to get picks for him. Tonight is a good night for that.

  44. Bucs Guy Says:

I agree with Madmax on trading White. Need to focus on getting a T — not a G today. Still need an Edge (Foskey, definitely not White), TE (anyone but LaPorta) and CB or S to play against a slot WR.

  45. Chris O Says:

Nobody is giving up a 2 and a 4 for Devin White. Be lucky to get just a fourth.

  46. MadMax Says:

Well, maybe I was doing some wishful thinking Chris….thats why im paid 0.00 for my thoughts lol.

If we stay put, O’Cyrus and Avila are gone, so is D. Washington…

So lets go LB Simpson, im surprised he’s still out there…and if he’s gone, trade down and if no trade partners, grab ACHANE!
