Todd Bowles Says He’s An Egoless Coach

March 1st, 2023

Joe really was struck seeing how steaming with confidence Todd Bowles was yesterday in several settings at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Bowles seemed like a new man.

And Joe was there in person in Indianapolis talking to Bowles on and off the record, and watching him with multiple national outlets. (You can hear Bowles on today’s Ira Kaufman Podcast below.)

Bowles feels great about the Bucs’ plan, but he also likes about how his coaching has matured, and he’s full-go when it comes to attacking his first year-round season with the Bucs and doing things 100 percent things his way.

Bowles reflected a bit on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he’s more real with himself than he used to be, and he’s become a better coach because of it.

“I think the first time I was a head coach it was difficult,” Bowles said of evaluating and assessing his mistakes and his team’s. “This time, you put your ego aside and you go back and you look at it.

“The first thing I do Monday when I go back and look at the game is see what I could have done better. See what I could have called better. And I’ll admit that to myself because there’s no ego this time around. You know, I’m a lot older since [starting coaching the Jets in 2015]. You kind of just look at everything you could have done better from that standpoint. And then you kind of work your way down to the players. And if they mess up, ‘Did you go over it enough? Did you teach them once they got it? ‘ And then you can shift the blame [in meetings]. But if you didn’t teach them everything down to the wire, you can never blame the player.”

Joe found that whole Bowles exchange intriguing. And Joe suspects Bowles heads a bit in that direction when he speaks of how he is excited about how new offensive coordinator Dave Canales will “coach the coaches.”

Of course, none of it matters if the Bucs don’t win games and progress through the season.

Poor December football equates to a bad season regardless of your team’s record, as Bowles explains in the podcast below.

  1. Bucfan Says:

If Bowels can’t win with the GOAT, how will he win without him? So tired of hearing he could not select his coaching staff last year. Well, THAT staff that was handed to him won a SB and made it to the NFC championship game the following season. What head coach would NOT want that type of staff? The Bucs will be lucky to win 5 games next season!

  2. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

I agree…. oh wait I thought it said “Clueless”

  3. Andrew Fish Says:

I hope this is true and not just talk. Bowles was horrible with the Jets and so far nothing shows it will be different. With that being said I want the Guy to get better because I just want to watch great Bucs football whoever the coach is. I dont want the lost decade again. youngry or toes on the line or mike smiths horrible defense. It sucked knowing we weren’t going to the playoffs during those years. Just win…. Go Bucs

  4. WillieG Says:

If Bowles actually put his ego aside, he wouldn’t have tried to force his conservative offensive philosophy onto an offense built for taking chances and making big plays.

  5. Tye Says:

a bigger truth is He is a losing coach!

  6. Darin Says:

Sounds like he’s saying the right things. But did he learn from last season or learn from his jets tenure? If it was his previous stop he didn’t show it last season. So hopefully he just learned this and can now show he can improve. Otherwise his words will speak louder than his actions.

  7. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Bowels hasn’t had a winning season as a head coach since 2015. I would say that’s reason enough to suppress the ego. He will be gone after this year and the Bucs will hopefully go with a young, creative, energetic coach.

  8. robert Says:

if he looked at tape on mondays and saw his own idiotic game calls and clock management he would have resigned by mid-season

  9. Redeemer Says:

His mentors, Parcells and Belichick were always brutal self evaluators. I don’t see that in Bowles. Too many of these same mistakes made over and over. With the two bills, it came from a military academy background. They understood not many plans survive first contact. Neither served, but their dads did and they were steeped in the culture. What did Bowles do? Hire and 18 man staff in NY and fire 14 of them by his final season. That doesn’t scream self evaluation, but blaming others for his mistakes. I hope to hell he learned his lesson.

  10. Faspro Says:

    No one’s egoless…

  11. Bosch Says:

Nonsense! Bowels calling himself egoless is about the same as China declaring they were transparent in disclosing the source of the coronavirus.

  12. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Looks like he’s also a coach with no self awareness.

  13. BucBoy Says:

I suspect Bowles is confident because the Glazers assured him that they understand 2023 is going to be a difficult season and won’t be holding it against him.

  14. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

LOL< Bowles Ego is so large, it needs it's own Zip Code!

  15. Allbuccedup Says:

Clueless for sure it will be a horrible season. The longer he stays the worse it will get.

  16. Jack Clark Says:

How is he an egoless coach when 100% of things has to be done his way?? And how is he egoless when his ego is the reason why we stopped running our Super Bowl winning no risk it no biscuit offense ?????? Make that make sense

And is Todd Bowels finally accepting accountability first instead of blaming it everyone else? It took him 59 years to start doing that and he’s supposed to be our leader??? What a joke

If Bowles actually put his ego aside, he wouldn’t have tried to force his conservative offensive philosophy onto an offense built for taking chances and making big plays.

    Big facts!!!!

  18. NEfan Says:

Haha, Joe is exploring stand up like Brady.

  19. Goatfarmer Says:

    (Major facepalm.)

What a Toad. Stooge. How blind. How deaf. How…..dumb.

Browns game? Steelers game? First Panthers game?

    Cowboys playoff game?

Four consecutive losing seasons, with the last easily being his most futile and failed. And yet here he is, saying that.

Flush the bowels, so done with him. So done.

  20. Jack Sparrow Says:

is he not fired yet ? come on man !!!

  21. Jerry Says:

Amazing. Just 2 years out from winning the Super Bowl, this team is looking at possibly one of the worst seasons in its franchise history.

  22. Goatfarmer Says:

Simple Toad – he can read animals’ thoughts, that’s his special gift. There’s a big role in the sequel to “Tropic Thunder” whenever it comes out. Time to get ready for the next career, Simple Toad.

  23. NEfan Says:

I wonder if the new OC will use stats when considering his match ups? Ya Blows has no ego issues. Can you say player fatigue over bad blitz call 2021?

  24. Thomas Edrington Says:

Tough to have a big ego when you pretty much SUCK AT YOUR JOB!

  25. BucU Says:

I’ve seen enough of Bowles coaching. Last seasons Buccaneers were listless, no enthusiasm, no preparation, etc, etc. I wash my hands of this guy.

  26. Go Bucs Says:

I trust Bowles, yes this past season didn’t go as anyone hoped. There was so much to it though with Tom having personal issues and BA just up and leaving and injury after injury. I think that Bowles did ruin our season last year but I think it was because he didn’t have his guys with his style and all the injuries. I think he can be out coach for a while and do great things for us.

  27. Mike S Says:

But what about being a winning coach? Ultimately that’s what matters.

  28. Stebobucsfan Says:

The question of if Bowles couldn’t win with Brady how can he be a winning coach. 1st of all could Brady have won without Bowles defense or in N England without a good defense. 2. You could clearly see Brady had something going on in life last year. He made a lot of bad decisions on the field himself. I love Brady and wish he had stayed 1 more year but, he’s not a 1 man band. In other words, he didn’t win All the games he has by himself

  29. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Stebobucsfan,You nailed it. Hopefully the majority of myopic bandwagon fans from the New England base who think Tom Brady did it almost all by himself are falling away now. Football is a true team sport. Real Buccaneer fans should have some anxiety at this time of year but should also be excited to see what the new team can do this year.

  30. Vancouver Buc Says:

BucFan and Willie G spot on. Bowels has made the Bucs irrelevant again, all in one off-season.

  31. NEfan Says:

I never claimed Brady won a SB on his own. The claim is.he came in and changed a losing mentality to a winning one and recruited the players to get it done. He almost help do it twice if not for your current 5 time loser Blows.

  32. ChiBuc Says:

Wow, y’all gonna kick that mule daily until it drops, even though it’s your ONLY option to tote this load.

It was a full barnyard last year… a goat beyond its prime, a donkey (BL) who couldn’t find a bag of oats strapped to his face, and the jackasses (BA/JL) who mortgaged the future for there own legacies/egoes.

  33. HC Grover Says:

    The Bowles Curse

  34. Defense Rules Says:

Note to Todd Bowles: ‘Stop talking so much to the media & let your actions speak for themselves. The media will bury you, and you’re holding the shovel & digging the hole for them.’

Joe you tickle me because you know what the responses from the maddening crowd will be when you write pieces like this, BEFORE they even respond. BA brought us a Super Bowl to ‘The Den of Depression’ plus another good year, and whoever followed him was destined to get skewered UNLESS they did as well or better than BA did. There was no way the 2022 team was gonna be a world-beater; too many key personnel losses from the 2020 & 2021 teams, and too many ‘side issues’ going on. Even BA would’ve struggled to have a break-even season with the team we put on the field week-in & week-out last year. Got a hunch that the 2016 & 2017 Cardinals would second that.

I’m rooting for Todd Bowles to have a good year as HC because for me to root against him would be the same as rooting against the Bucs. Can’t do that, for the same reason I can’t even fathom a tanking season. That’s what losers root for. Am I optimistic about us having a winning season? Probably not, but I do try to be open-minded. And yes, HOPEFUL. I know that HOPE isn’t a strategy, but then again, our Bucs are in, shall we say ‘uncharted waters’.

  35. Goatfarmer Says:

I want Bloweazo to be a Bucs winning head coach.

I also want $10 million in gold bullion dropped off in my driveway.

They are about equally as likely.

  36. NEfan Says:

I noticed DR didn’t mention Brady in his hurrah speech. BA did this, BA did that, BA went 7-9 with a #1 draft pick. FYI the 2022 Bucs were far better than a 8-10 team.

  37. BucsfanFred Says:

    Gutless coach.

  38. Voice of Truth Says:

He has no ego because he has lead 5 teams into the regular season and come out with a winning record exactly 1 time

He should have no ego, he is not a good head coach

  39. Thugster Says:

You got Rooney ruled Tampa, bowels ran the jets into the ground, his offenses have always been stuck in the mud and now he is yours, good luck getting rid of him

  40. mg Says:

Liar Bowles will be fired after another year long coaching debacle.

  41. Defense Rules Says:

NEfan … ‘FYI the 2022 Bucs were far better than a 8-10 team.’

Bullspit. You are what your record says you are. The NFL doesn’t give out participation trophies.

  42. SED14 Says:

Wow. Just wow. So No Leadership & Massively Uninspiring Bowels claims he learns from his coaching mistakes?? I respectfully present the following exhibits for consideration: @ Pittsburg, @ Cleveland, @ Carolina @ San Fran, Dallas playoff to just name a few.

I can accept tactical mistakes during the heat of battle. They happen. What I will never forget or accept was Low Energy Bowels complete lack of preparation, game planning and absolutely zero fire, passion, or adjustments during each of those winnable games. His players looked checked out, uninterested and lethargic. That’s 100% on Mr. Low Energy and No Leadership as he stood emotionless on the sideline like a dang statue with the same lost AF deer in the headlights look on his face.

I’m sorry folks, that’s who he is….and that’s who he was when he crashed the Jets into the side of a mountain and that’s who he was this year when he steered our rudderless ship into the rocks.

How can anyone watch those five games I highlighted above and say that Todd learned ANYTHING from each of them. If he learned from his mistakes then why was he so massively unprepared for Dallas?? I don’t even know what to say anymore….you can’t teach leadership and you can’t teach passion. You either have it or you don’t. And our fearful leader has neither.

  43. NEfan Says:

DR, so I guess they couldn’t have won Cleveland, Pittsburgh, GB, Baltimore, Cincy & a better fight against Dallas in PO with better coaching. I say you’re 100% wrong.
