Did Coordinator Change Hurt Bucs’ Draft Prep?

March 2nd, 2023

Catching up.

Refreshing candor from Bucs coach Todd Bowles in Indianapolis.

Bowles was asked when he stood before the #NFLMedia about what positions seem to be the strongest in this year’s draft. Bowles, surprisingly, said he wasn’t sure because he was just recently starting to dive into his draft research.

“I’m not sure because I’m just getting into it,” Bowles said. “We had some time off during the offseason and I’m hiring coaches, so I’m not sure which ones are strong or weak.

“I know there’s some cornerbacks coming out in the first, the tight ends have a strong class. I have to really look at everybody else.”

Joe cannot gripe about the coaches getting time off. That’s standard procedure throughout the NFL. Coaching staffs get a week or two off immediately after the season ends. (Joe remembers the Bucs’ front office got a week off immediately after winning the Super Bowl in February 2021.)

This tells Joe that Bowles was fully immersed in the search for not just the new offensive coordinator (Dave Canales) but also his new assistants.

This is no concern. The front office does 90% of the work on scouting and setting the board anyway. There’s plenty of time between now and the draft for the coaches to get up to speed on specific players who fit what they want to do.

I call bs on him being in the office at 4am.

if he is he must be playing solitaire……..cause he sure aint prepared for games or opponents.

now he has no clue what the drafft board looks like. that the 1st thing he has said that i actually believe.

this year will be all about watchin what Trask can do…..and build the trenches.

  3. PSL Bob Says:

I notice the Bucco Bruce logo showing up on some of the photos you’ve posted this week, Joe. Any significance? If I recall the Bucs will be able to wear their throwback unis this year. Are there any limitations on the number of times they can do that?

  4. Dooley Says:

It’s draft season, meaning there’s a green light on the BS in order to not tip your hat to your peers via the media.

  5. Goatfarmer Says:

Not surprising that Loose Bowels would not be prepared, much like his defense in critical situations.

How many in a row, Toad? He might be able to squeeze 7 losers in a row out of the Glazers.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This should be an easier draft for us because we have many need positions….

Depending on the decisions on Dean & LVD….we could be needing a CB or LB.

    Perhaps a LT/RT…..TE…..RB…..S.

    A DT to replace Hicks/Gholston

So when we are on the clock…..pick the best player at those positions….and we should be good.

  7. D-Rok Says:

He will have to meet Coach Moore at OBP around 0400 to catch up.

  8. Marine Buc Says:

    @ TBBF

Exactly – this team has so many needs they could draft anything except Punter and it would fill a need…

I would like to see the Bucs trade back – not out of the first round – but maybe into the mid 20’s somewhere.

Pick up an few extra picks.

We only have 3 picks in the first 100. Not great when you need cheap, young, healthy players.

  9. SB~LV Says:

Get used to a few years of 8-8 poor football

  10. Nybuccguy Says:

Licht makes the picks. I don’t like Bowles, but there’s nothing concerning with him not knowing all the draft prospects right now.

  11. Dewey Selmon Says:

Noticed it to PSL. This is the year of Bucco Bruce.

  12. Goatfarmer Says:

.500-ish football would be shockingly good. Bowelszo Clownzo will be lucky to average 4 wins a year and we’re gonna be stuck with him because he is, “Special.”

  13. Pewter Power Says:

I’m sure Stevie wonder could see why this team was so bad. Gm is the shot caller I’m sure they knew what they need long before the season was over

  14. Stebobucsfan Says:

People can we please stop the Bowles bashing. Damn it man you first say it was Leftwich now it Bowles. I suggest you watch the 2023 season first. If it’s a complete failure then I am with you on criticizing Bowles. I mean if you’re that pissed with what going on in Tampa Bay switch Jacksonville or Miami, they are both decent teams in Fla.

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

    sure.

There is a lot of room on his head for a painting of a clown face- a happy positive one.

Inspire the troops because, Toad! I mean Todd!!! Yay!

  16. Rga Says:

Most head coaches would have said “we are in the process of evaluating the draft prospects, we are excited about the talent on both sides of the ball”
Todd Bowels apparently does not sugar coat where his thought process is to his own detriment.
I personally am not concerned, every team has scouts and I’m sure Jason Licht is paying attention. Plenty of time for evaluation before the draft.

  17. Craig Says:

Every coach lies and throws shade getting ready for the draft. A never showing hand kind of thing.

Besides, you have staff that will tell you looks best when it is your turn to pick. let him have his fun now, get serious when it counts.

  18. mark2001 Says:

Don’t look now…rumor in Green Bay, Panthers have contacted Packers about Rodgers trade.

  19. Fire Keith Armstrong Says:

    Now.

  20. Letsbucinggo Says:

Doesn’t have a clue. He needs time off give him a year or two.

  21. BucsfanFred Says:

Mark2001, I hope the Panthers do trade for kaaron. Hope they pay through the nose.

  22. Bucfan Says:

‘Bucco Bruce’ is back and their record next season will prove it!

  23. Allbuccedup Says:

Great the excuses are already starting so what half the teams in the nfl were looking for head coaches, coordinators and replacement coaches. The eagles had to fill offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. Give me a break.
