Will Dominance Continue For Tristan Wirfs?

February 8th, 2023

Unique insight from rival.

Joe got to speak very briefly with the guy Bucs fans love to hate: Pro Bowl defensive end Cam Jordan of the slimy Saints.

Joe asked him about Bucs right tackle Tristan Wirfs. They’ve locked horns for three years now. Epic battles. And Jordan told Joe something very interesting.

Wirfs this fall will likely have his most challenging season to date since entering the NFL in 2020, Jordan told Joe. Why is that? Well, Jordan said, this will be Wirfs’ first year without Tom Brady.

You see, Jordan explained, Brady was so good with offensive lines that he helped those blocking for him reach the peaks of their careers.

This is something Wirfs told Joe over the weekend in Las Vegas in a roundabout way. Wirfs said the main thing he liked about blocking for Brady was he always knew where Brady was in the pocket.

“We are going to see what that mettle is worth post-Tom Brady,” Jordan said of Wirfs. “To this point, you also gave [Wirfs] Tom Brady who as prolific of a legend that he is, he also got the ball off the fastest you’ve ever seen.”

This may be a small factor in CBS Sports rating Wirfs as the NFL’s best pass-blocking lineman this season.

“An offensive lineman with Tom Brady at the helm, he gets everybody paid,” Jordan said. “From Sebastian Vollmer to Marcus Cannon to Nate Solder, there has been decades worth of offensive linemen who were good but were covered up by Tom Brady.

“Then they go somewhere else and they don’t have the success that they had.”

Joe has a hunch Wirfs not only isn’t going anywhere soon but he will get paid. But to Jordan’s point, he’s not wrong. Between Brady’s smarts and his release, he made the job of the linemen just a little easier.

Joe likes to recount the story of former Bucs scout and Jets front office big-shot Pat Kirwan saying hours after Brady signed with the Bucs that the Bucs’ offensive line improved greatly because Brady was so good at line calls, putting linemen in the correct position to max them out.

We’ll just have to wait and see hun

  2. Rover Says:

Gold Jacket Wirfs will only get better. We are witnessing history in the making. Greatest Draft pick of the last 2 decades.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I see no reason why Wirfs won’t continue to excel…..he was a great draft pick and a great Buc for years to come That’s what happens when you spend your first rount pick on a sure-thing Olineman. I think the last time we did that it was for Davin Joseph.

  4. YucsBall Says:

Keep investing in the Oline, I want them to shut Cam’s mouth.

  5. Cobraboy Says:

At least Wirf gets attention thanks to Brady.

Paul Gruber never got the attention he deserved.

  6. darengibo Says:

Pretty sure there was a lot of complaining about Licht when Tampa traded up one spot to draft Wirfs.

  7. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Wirfs will be just fine. Brady’s success with the Bucs has as much to do with Wirfs as the other way around. Jordan trying a sneaky dig at Wirfs won’t fly with me.

  8. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    F Cam Jordan

  9. Infomeplease Says:

Wirf’s is as good as they get for a right tackle!!! When he gets tired of osing…he’ll gladly be gone too!!!!

  10. Infomeplease Says:

After moving on, Alex Cappa was doing good until he got hurt!! F U Jordan!!

  11. gp Says:

Considering the “Brady effect” on O-lines, perhaps our O-line, as a whole, was even worse than we all thought last year?
No simple answers and no simple fixes, especially with the “Brady effect” no longer in play.
    Wirfs is a manbeast.
Jenson has the attitude and leadership
IMO, the rest of our lineman are journeymen at best.
Granted, if you add a dollar to my opinion, you still can’t buy a cup of coffee.

  12. Frank Pillow Says:

I’m so glad we drafted the dude with palsy over Cam Jordan. What a brilliant decision by Bucs brass at the time.

  13. bluetick Says:

Hey JBF, Why do you even cover this douche?

  14. SB~LV Says:

I ain’t buying what the Glazer’s are selling
Been a fan since walking into the first preseason game

  15. Joe Says:

Hey JBF, Why do you even cover this douche?

Many reasons. This story is a perfect example of one. Jordan is a smart guy. (He plays the part of wrestling heel very well.) This was both an interesting and smart perspective. And if you were stuck in the chicken coop the NFL had reporters caged in the Pro Bowl Games media availability, you’d be happy to talk to any player who gave you 15 seconds. Joe surely didn’t spend hundreds of dollars to fly across the country only to speak with Wirfs.

  16. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

This years Bucs entire draft should be focused on oline and d-back upgrades. To see repeated blown coverages in the playoffs was embarrassing. Typically, that stuff gets ironed out in spring training. Clearly the Bucs backs were deploying their best ‘toast’ coverege scheme that day, and on national tv. Good job boys, any job worth doing; is worth doing well!

Think if the next qb will not be able to get rid of the ball in .05 seconds as Brady due to olĂ© blocking schemes deployed on left side of line. I expect a pile of ints. I say bring back jamiss, and go record Int. hunting! Why not? He won’t disappoint. Been there seen that.
One guys hands on the oline hurt to much to hold, because he held so much. I think he got paid like 20 mill. Way to reward that failure! It should be entertaining next year to say the least.

  17. MB Says:

Cam “Never Won a Super Bowl” Jordan always has a lot to say about other teams that have won Super Bowls

  18. SB~LV Says:

The Smiling G’Boyz are played by the other 31 owners
The Tampa fans take it year after year!
Sell the team to a winner please!
    I’m done with the ownership
    Carry on suckers !

  19. Rob Says:

Brady also got rid of the ball very fast and would Chuck it at a RB’s feet at the first sign of real pressure. That helps the pass blocking look better too.

  20. Jack Clark Says:

Cam Jordan didn’t even say anything positive about Wirfs and marginalized his accomplishments ??? I hope Wirfs pancakes that as hole next season!

  21. Hail2dabucs Says:

Now that Brady is gone , our right tackle is a beast no worries there . Man the left tackle another story , and both guards..beef up oline & dline and for goodness sake , get some db’s that do not get toasted like a slice of bread consistently! I mean to have Davis as our number one is bad ! No pics and gets beat alot . That McCallum was horrible and we need new blood that can play up in there . The chiefs got a bunch of rookies back there and they can play…that’s good coaching which we do not have . How is it that our special teams have been this bad for years and they can’t get that right either ? If we nail it on a QB in one of these next 2 drafts I’m not convinced our coaching staff would have a clue how to build a perennial winner out of him .

  22. Browsing from DC Says:

The general consensus on Wirfs from pass rushers that have faced him is that he’s one of the best in the game. That’s what matters. Respect from your opponents.

Of course it helps having a guy like Brady back there but talent recognizes talent and Wirfs has the talent and the respect. He’s only going to get better, too! Scary

  23. Joe Says:

I’m so glad we drafted the dude with palsy over Cam Jordan.

    LOL!!!

  24. SB~LV Says:

Has the GM addressed the sports industry and Buccaneer sucker’s about the last season and the future of the franchise?
    No !
    Why ?
Me thinking that JL and the GBoyz think they have something big lined up that can’t be announced until after the Super Bowl
. Sure that’s it !
Rug pull coming and the Bucs will be sucking hind teat on the ole NFL sow

  25. Bosch Says:

Utter nonsense. Wirfs is a great OT his own accord. Jordan is a sore loser.

  26. SOEbuc Says:

Weak sauce. Been talking all week about slimy saint Cam Jordan to arrive and say he’s done because Tom Brady. Jordan had gotten shut down be the youngster too many times, so now he comes up with this crap. Who says this trying to use facts about a couple other guys. Idiot.

    So tired of Jordan talking

  30. Duane Says:

Sour grapes from someone who never won the big game, but consistently underachieved while front running. Too bad shooting your mouth off doesnt contribute to victories. He is even a better expert on choking in the big games. Should have asked him about that. All those division wins and epic choke jobs in the post season.

  31. unbelievable Says:

Hopefully Lenny or White gives a couple nice chop blocks to Jordan next season a la Micah Parsons.

But more than anything I just hope Jordan never ever wins a ring. F that guy.

  32. unbelievable Says:

    *chip blocks

  33. Rod Munch Says:

That stat is really impressive considering that Wirfs are injured for a lot of the year and not his typical completely dominate self, at least for a few games anyways.

But Wirfs isn’t a flash in a pan or being propped up by Brady. Literally all you have to do is watch the tape and you see the best RT in football, and one of the very very very best offensive lineman in football.

That’s why Wirfs is the Bucs top trade chip. If you really were to do a complete teardown and roster rebuild, he’d be the guy you’d build a trade around. Before you laugh that off, consider the haul that the Dolphins got for Laremy Tunsil, and how they turned that into one of the best young teams in football that should compete for years. With that said, I’m not getting rid of Wirfs, but I’d understand the temptation if the team goes 3-14 next year.

  34. Cobraboy Says:

    Wirfs > Jordan

  35. SB~LV Says:

    Buc1987
    “It’s just a game “
and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans are being played!
The owners are inept at running a sports team
They are just carried along in the massive tsunami of TV revenue

  36. Beej Says:

I hope Wirfs moves to left tackle, mostly because the kid will get a lot more money, and of all offensive lineman, the left tackle seems to get the most prestige which this kid also deserves

  37. Cobraboy Says:

Wirfs is not Tunstil. Wirfs is a solid citizen, unlike Tunstil (remember his draft issue, the bong.)

IMO, Wirfs is an untouchable Buc.

  38. Beej Says:

Trying to remember, did Anthony Munoz pay his whole career at right tackle?

  39. Redeemer Says:

Cam is just trying to get under the skin. Joe is right, he’s very smart and articulate. He mixes truth with utter speculation like a seasoned politician. He knows exactly what he’s doing. Brady has made many a lineman because of his ability to read and deliver the ball quickly. Most of the time, he knew where he was going with the ball pre-snap. Wirfs is a great lineman. Cam is wrong and he knows it. I’m firmly against the switch to LT though. Now is the time to draft a LT with a high pick. Very few great ones are late picks. Trade smith and draft.

  40. Bucsfan13 Says:

Wirfs isn’t included with in the conversation because he’s the real deal, but Jordan is absolutely right. There is most certainly a “Brady effect” on the OL. He made Nate Solder and Trent Brown the highest paid tackles in the NFL for a year? Solder went on to the Giants and sucked. Did he suddenly forget how to block? He benefited from the Brady effect. The same with Trent Brown. Belichick told a great story on Brady’s podcast about how Brady’s quick releases helped when they had issues on the OL.
