Mike Evans And Chris Godwin A Dominant Duo

February 18th, 2023

Underrated?

Joe guesses this will surprise many Bucs fans.

If Joe informed you that the Bucs could have Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, you’d likely respond, “Sure, how much blood do you need from me?”

If Joe told you the Bucs could have Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, you’d likely ask who needed to be shot.

Now, get ready for this: The Bucs have a pair that is better. That’s right. Last year only two pairs of stud receivers got more production than Mike Evans and Chris Godwin did.

Evans and Godwin racked up 2,147 receiving yards combined. That was third-best in the NFL. The duos better were Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle (3,066) and A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith (2,692).

So new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales is actually upgrading from Lockett and Metcalf.

    A Franchise QB’s dream!

  2. Will Says:

One question, what duo had the most TDs? Points is all that matters we all know this.

  3. The Anomaly Says:

Didn’t Brady throw the most passes in his career?

These stats lack context. Epic fail.

They should have a lot more yards based on our offense.

  4. Gaines Says:

And that’s with Godwin coming off a major knee injury + missing a few games

  5. steele Says:

Just tell me if they can run the ball. – Love, Todd Bowlesball Bowles

  6. Goatfarmer Says:

Mike and Chris give me something to watch in the upcoming disaster that will be Toad’s Bowels’ last season in football.

  7. Proudbucsfan Says:

Joe you didn’t mention Evans & Godwin both missed games. Could have had more yards.

  8. Anonymous Says:

One things for sure. No matter the background of the starting QB in the coming season, it’s likely he’s never had this caliber of weapons to work with. Ever. And since Canales had a pair almost as good around, he should surely know how to use them the right way. Who knows, he might even be capable of scheming them open for a change. And run plays, compared to what we all just suffered through, this guy’s probably going to look like the second coming of Einstein!

Man Bowels and Leftwich must have really hated each other by the time it was over. God only knows how Brady really felt. He was/is too classy to spill the beans on what (in his view) really happened. If a book was written and sold on it, I’d read it. Be worth millions…

  9. Da Bucs Guy Says:

Huge passing yards means the team is behind in second half. Show touchdown and see how dominant. Show attempted pass plays to run plays and see how non-dominant they were. Show yac stats to see how teams just ran prevent lite defenses to run out the clock to their victory.

    Misleading stats indeed.

  10. OMFS88 Says:

Holy cow the comments are doom and gloom.

You’ve convinced yourselves this stat is actually bad!

  11. Jeff Says:

I’d trade Chris and Mike for any of the other duos on that list. Mike and Chris are nice possession receivers but that’s about it.

  12. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Since Evans has been the best receiver in the league for the last 10 years none of this is a surprise.

  13. Buccaneric Says:

Can’t read comments anymore. Joe is right. Y’all need Prozac.

  14. FortMyersDave Says:

I see the trolls are out early today.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Buccaneric … ‘Can’t read comments anymore. Joe is right. Y’all need Prozac.’

I agree Buccaneric, and have taken to just by-passing certain commenters’ constant pissin & moanin. It’s not about being positive & Pollyanna all the time. It’s about offering meaningful comments to others without being overly negative all the time. Reminds me of the old saying ‘It’s hard to soar with eagles when you work with turkeys’.

And yes Anomaly, those stats do ‘lack context’. But at the same time, Evans-Godwin-and Gage are 3 excellent WRs to build around. Add in a decent OLine (which I feel that we have under contract right now) & a couple of decent RBs (like White & Fournette), and our new OC has something to at least start working with. We still need to find the QB who can run the show (might be Trask; might be someone else) and add a quality TE (who can catch AND block) & we’ll could be OK offensively. There’ll be growing pains I’m sure, but I’m much more concerned about our DEFENSE this year. Pretty deep hole to dig out of.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sure, Evans & Godwin lack the explosiveness of some of the other WRs…..but they are fantastic……

Our offense is mostly under contract and is adequate….

We will have some holes in our defense.

We will need to draft a CB, LB, DT/Edge, S……..perhaps we can get a Blocking/Receiving beast at TE along with a RB.

  17. 1sparkybuc Says:

Imagine how great they could have been with a mobile QB who could throw more than six or seven yards down the field.

  18. SB~LV Says:

    Only with a great QB
I love them and don’t look forward to them getting the crap beat out of them during the coming REBUILD
I would spare them the experience and trade them to a contender
If you love someone you must set them free.
Just like Brady and Gronk will ALWAYS be Patriots
Evans and Godwin will always be Buccaneers.
Folks need to adjust their emotions to the reality of modern day NFL.
It’s the painful side of free agency

  19. #99 the Big fella Says:

I actually think the bucs have one of the worst fan bases.. when we win everyone is still trying to find a reason to complain..
A true fan will support our team through everything..

To all you true buc fans I salute you!

  20. Stebobucsfan Says:

Joe that’ll no surprise to me. This pass season I have no idea why, Brady didn’t throw too to Evans much in 3 to 5 games and many times Evans was wide open. I think the Bucs are still a playoff team. I don’t think the Bucs need to break the bank for a QB to win just see the Rams M Stanford, Seahawks G Smith. When you look at teams like KC, Cincinnati the Rams I think the Bucs have more core players than all. The problem is Bowles and Canales has the put the players we’re they fit best and we are sure to be playoff bound. Last draft and develop a franchise QB

    Only with a great QB
    ^^^^^^^^
Those guys were great with Jameis. Do you consider Jameis a great QB?

  22. SB~LV Says:

    JoeMich
Both players are lucky to have survived catching Jamyth’s high , wide , behind them balls
Any one that can’t make a proper argument and has to throw down the “true fan “ card has just done themselves a huge disservice

  23. Winky Says:

    Go Bucs!!!

  24. Cobraboy Says:

Considering the number of passes Brady threw, those numbers may be an underachievement.

  25. Cobraboy Says:

@TBBF: every position on this roster is a position of extreme need. You can’t even force-rank them.

The real needs will be seen after the cap cuts/restructures and the FA bell rings. So the “needs” may actually increase.

  26. Joe in Michigan Says:

LV: Evans and Godwin are building blocks that you don’t give away, IMHO. They’ll make the next QB look better than the guy is, and that’s what the Bucs need.

  27. Will Says:

Don’t get me wrong I love Chris and Mike throw a healthy Gage in there and we have a very nice WR room. I wasn’t complaining about the stats at all I honestly wanted to know which duo had the most TDs. Yes Mike kept his streak alive but we all know Mike wants to win games and would’ve said to hell with that record if it meant more TDs and wins.
I also believe that our new OC has pieces to work with the cupboard definitely isn’t bare.

  28. HC Grover Says:

    Good trade em for picks.

  29. Janis Says:

To bad those yards came from 1-2-3 yard completions. Dink after dink. That doesn’t get many first downs or points. If it did, the buds wouldn’t have fired most of their coaches.

  30. D-Rok Says:

Our duo is very, very good, and glad we have them. Add in a productive and healthy Gage and we should have an outstanding WR room.

Still, we need a quick and shifty chain-mover, though.

  31. The Anomaly Says:

@ DR – just being realistic. We went 8-10 with the GOAT. We are way over the cap. We have Todd Bowels as HC. Sorry…I see 4-13 ahead no matter who is QB. Too many anchors to overcome. I’m not going to pretend to be positive just because you don’t like the truth. And thank you for agreeing these stats lack context. You and I both know that they should have had much better seasons…yes? Sorry it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. We are in a real bad situation overall. Yes?

  32. #99 the Big fella Says:

SB~LV most of the crap you post is a disservice! You are part of the crybaby club here

  33. Proudbucsfan Says:

Whoever throws around the word possession receiver when talking about Mike Evans is an idiot. Possession receivers don’t score touchdowns how many touchdowns does Mike Evans have about 90 ? Dumarse

  34. Goatfarmer Says:

Mike and Chris are two reasons not to be negative, and yet there are cretins who want Licht to trade them because they want the team to suck.

  35. 1#bucsfan Says:

Bin saying this for awhile. With ME13 ,CG14,RG17 our oline which will get better with a healthy Jensen if he can stay healthy plug in a QB n they should do just fine. We have a couple of decent backs too. New OC and hopefully we see a dominant offense again. Our defense will need much help tho. They weren’t bad last year but gotta get cheaper n younger to many FA. Defensive draft coming
