“It Shows Up In The Offensive Line Play”

February 12th, 2023

Joe is no fan of former slimy Saints head coach Sean Payton, but he is an excellent listen when he talks football, and he was tied to Tom Brady when the duo schemed to work together in Miami while Brady was a Buccaneer.

Brady made a lot of headlines in early October when the Bucs were 2-2 along with a lot of NFL teams. Brady noted “there’s a lot of bad football from what I watch. I watch a lot of bad football, poor quality of football.”

The Goat never really said what was so bad, but his good friend Payton referenced that Brady line last week during a visit to The Pat McAfee Show.

“It shows up in the offensive line play,” Payton said. He added that O-linemen need the chemistry built in practice (the NFL has cut practice time through the years) and Payton said preseason is very important of that O-line and team chemistry and his new team in Denver will play starters in preseason.

Payton added there is no data that says skipping preseason keeps a roster healthier.

The chatter from Payton about an offensive line desperately needing practice and time together really got Joe thinking back. The Bucs lost Ryan Jensen for the season in camp, followed by Super Bowl right guard Aaron Stinnie in a preseason game, and Tristan Wirfs had a significant oblique injury during the team’s joint practices at Tennessee. The O-line coordinator in chief Tom Brady, of course, missed several summer practices for personal reasons.

Right guard Shaq Mason spent August learning a new offense and Luke Goedeke and Robert Hainsey were first-time starters. And after all that fun, Donovan Smith suffered a significant elbow injury in Week 1.

This all adds up to a lot of excuses, but it also could have had a major impact on Brady’s confidence along with the mindset of the running backs. And a quarterback feeling less confident rarely makes for good football.

  1. mark2001 Says:

    It wasn’t good football.

  2. Guzzie Says:

Really hope we move Wirfs to LT, he’s an excellent player, a full offseason to transition, then they put Goedeke at RT where he belongs

  3. NoLogicLeftwich Says:

it was some of the WORST offensive play calling I’ve seen in the last 25 years.

  4. Usedtocould Says:

It’s always a bummer to see bad oline play on your own team. I would be ok with the bucs picking an olineman in one of the first three rounds every year until I die.

  5. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    F Sean Peyton

  6. David Says:

I absolutely hate the thought of moving Wirfs to LT. The guy is the best right tackle in the NFL. Why make two spots up as questionable? Draft a LT in first or second round, time to release Donovan unless he takes a drastic pay cut.

Mason, Wirfs , Jensen, … if Smith can take a pay cut (and they draft LT) and get his head right after this year, their line play should be just fine as long as they solidify LG.

  7. David Says:

    Usedtocould

If I was a GM, I would take an O and D lineman in the top 4 rounds every single year in the draft. Nothing else matters if they don’t control the game.

Make them great, stop a pass rush, get a pass rush, have depth. Have trade bait.

  8. Zwak Says:

If the Bucs are smart they will trade Mike Evans for a first round pick in next year’s draft. I know this won’t be the popular to do with the fans but we would come out way ahead in end.

  9. stpetebucfan Says:

This also means the Bucs have a solid chance to rebound offensively!

IF…IF…both tackles are healthy and Jensen fully recovers, Mason is good and there are plenty of candidates to choose for that last spot and backup spots.

  10. Buccos Says:

Donovan has to go, without a doubt. You my friend are the weakest link. And that is saying a lot. We need to draft a plug and play LT. Get Jensen back at full strength, keep Leverett at LG, Mason at RG. Then you have great depth all along the line. Goedeke goes back to his natural position as a back up T and Hainsey a backup guard and center. DS76 is terrible and needs to go far far away. He has no power in the run game and poor technique as a pass blocker. That is why he leads the league in holding penalties. There is no upside with him. Thanks for the mammories

  11. steele Says:

    This is all old news.

We knew from the first day of training camp that this would happen anyway. Lose Jensen and Stinnie (good job, Logan Hall), there goes the chemistry and your leader. Brady comes in with distractions and excused absences (to finish shooting his Golden Girl movie and fix his marriage), more loss of chemistry, although his absence alone was not the biggest problem.

But the main problem was and remains the same: coaching. Lack of. And Licht. Lack of leadership and immediate action that should have taken place the minute Jensen went down. They did nothing in free agency to shore up the glaring problem. They hyped and promoted in-house Hainsey and Leverett etc. etc. JAGs and backups. They threw Goedeke out there. Wasting what they spent in free agency on the likes of part-timers and no-timers. Kyle Rudolph, Julio, Gage, Akiem, Nassib. Shaq Mason? Adequate, but not a difference maker, and undersized.

With Jensen back, everyone healthy, yes, the OL should of course improve. You still need coaching and some offseason moves to make that line great again.

  12. Go Bucs Go Says:

Zwak, Mike Evans is good for at most 3rd round pick. 4th round pick seems his current market value at this point in his career.

    Go Bucs!

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Go Bucs Go – you’re retarded.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

That was one of the worst national anthems I’ve ever heard. I’d rather have had Roseanne Barr do it.

Now we get McDonalds doing gay commercials.

    What a great start.

  15. Rod Munch Says:

I asked Alexa when kickoff would take place, she told me 6:30… I’ve been lied to yet again. I can’t trust anything.

But I like how they showed a picture of how many people were on the field during the coin flip, that was amazing.

Now we’re getting a commercial about women getting hot flashes.

This is the best super bowl ever!

  16. The Anomaly Says:

    super bowl thread?

  17. Rod Munch Says:

Yep, this is the official ‘BIG GAME’ thread!

  18. Rod Munch Says:

    Zero pressure.

Chiefs will get killed if they don’t blitz.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

Hurts is not Michael Vick — rush him, don’t just stand there like an idiot.

    Andy Reid gonna choke again.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

There’s a new Fast n Furious movie? That’s the most offensive thing I’ve seen so far this Super Bore.

  21. #99 the Big fella Says:

Rod you are cracking me up.lol

  22. Jack Clark Says:

We need to start running the smoke screen offense like the chiefs and 49ers do by sending someone in motion before the snap to confuse defenses at the last second

  23. The Anomaly Says:

    freaking kickers

  24. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Munch, you’re a dope. Stapleton’s National Anthem was tremendous. He’s an artist and not a performer. You get to see a performer at halftime, as she’s not an artist. If you don’t know the difference, you don’t go see live shows, and my best guess is you don’t.

  25. Rod Munch Says:

HAHAHAAHAHAHAHA ALL THE PHILLY TRASH BOOING RONDE!

    FANTASTIC MOMENT!

  26. Rod Munch Says:

Alvin Scissors Harper – I have no idea who that guy is, but doing a parody of an 80s singer singing about Cleveland isn’t good music.

  27. Trask To The Future Says:

    AT THR SUPER BOWL!

    Live here in Phoenix (Scottsdale).

When all the Eagles fans booed for Ronde I yelled “WE SHUT DOWN THE VET!!!” And many eagles fans got pissed!!

    Hahaha.

    GO BUCS!

  28. Rod Munch Says:

Trask To The Future – That’s awesome! The boos came across on TV, but the idiots doing the announcing didn’t say why they were booing. I only wish Ronde would have pointed at his back like he did when running back the TD.

  29. The Anomaly Says:

    wow

  30. Trask To The Future Says:

    Rod,

More eagles fans than chiefs fans by a lot.

    Eagles fans are so obnoxious.

  31. Mord Says:

I hope you all noticed Ronde’s phenomenal and hilarious response to being booed by Philly fans when they introduced the HOF inductees.

He pointed at his back with his thumb. Just like he did *during his pick-six* that essentially closed Veteran’s Stadium in the 2003 NFC Championship game

    Outstanding.

  32. Rihannas Rack Says:

The announcers should have picked up on it and reminded everyone of that glorious play forever etched in Bucs history

  33. DBS Says:

QB made a mistake. Run him out of town.

  34. CleanHouse Says:

Winning teams go for it on 4th down from midfield
Also, three former Bucs are playing in the super bowl-
    Bad coaching and personnel management.

  35. Rod Munch Says:

Mord – oh Ronde did do that? Awesome, I missed that.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

These are not SB-level teams. Poor Chiefs are 100% reliant on Mahomes, who is playing on one leg, and Hurts is beating up a bad defense with some truly awful tackling and coverage.

Man, makes me even madder that losers Bowles and Leftwich were handed the Bucs this year. There is no way an Arians coach team isn’t coaching and winning today.

  37. Vlad The Impaler Says:

So if Mahomes is done it’s over

  38. Rod Munch Says:

HOLY CRAP, RIHANNA IS PERFORMING ON A CHINESE SPY BALLOON!

  39. Rod Munch Says:

VERIFIED IT’S A CHINESE SPY BALLOON, NOW SHE’S PERFORMING WITH THE WUHAN SCIENTISTS THAT LEAKED THE PLAGUE! #CCCPHALFTIME

  40. HC Grover Says:

What a nasty disgusting halftime show. Uggggh! Had to turn it off.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

Someone should tell Rihanna she’s a middle aged woman, and those moves that were hot when she was 21, now make her look like she’s got a UTI.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

But you do have to give Rihanna credit for putting on this show considering the pregnancy.

  43. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    Make it stop!

  44. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    Ancient Aliens is on

  45. Rod Munch Says:

WAIT, I’m not even joking, I thought Rihanna was around 45… I was going to say she doesn’t look half-bad for her age.

Well that compliment went south very quickly.

  46. The Anomaly Says:

I more worry about an injury during the pregnancy

    Should have said no

  47. Rod Munch Says:

Would be a real shame if the stadium burned down there at the end. I mean no one would want to see anything bad to happen to a stadium full of Eagles fans.

  48. Rod Munch Says:

The Anomaly – I thought she was just fat and was kidding about her being pregnant, as I thought she was too old to get pregnant. Shows what I know.

  49. HC Grover Says:

Thats it too disgusting turning this crap off.

  50. Vlad The Impaler Says:

For some reason I hate KC more than the iggles. I actually want the iggles to win. That’s absurd.

  51. Craig Says:

Brady did not put an ounce of confidence in this team this year.

It wasn’t just the O-line, he has dealt with rookie linemen before, it was his attitude at the game.

It almost looked like he was railing against Giselle saying she would leave him if he didn’t retire.

  52. Mike C Says:

    Watson!

  53. Rod Munch Says:

Vlad The Impaler – KC fans are sort of inoffensive, like when they lost the SB, I really wanted to hear some hardcore crying, instead they just complained about the refs some, that was about it.

But the Eagles fans, what garbage fans, and a garbage city. I’ve been there, the first thing you see leaving the airport is a huge garbage dump that stinks, it’s a great first impression since that’s what the city is, a pile of stinky trash.

  54. Rod Munch Says:

This Eagles coach is a loser. Bowles knows how you play the game, you punt the ball, always, even if you don’t have to.

  55. Mike C Says:

Is Todd watching 👀 this game? AGGRESSIVE FOOTBALL!

  56. Rod Munch Says:

Serves the Eagles kicker right to almost get hurt like that, after the stupid Eagles attacked Martin Grammatic with the TV crane golf cart.

  57. Rod Munch Says:

    *GRAMATICA

    Stupid commie spell checker.

  58. Rod Munch Says:

Oh I found a great list from an Eagles blog…

Philadelphia Eagles: 10 Biggest Postseason Heartbreaks

    #1. 2003: NFC Championship Game (Bucs 27, Eagles 10)

Outside of the Packers and the ST LOUIS SCAMS, the Eagles are my 3rd most hated team.

The stupid NFL makes a big woke deal out of two black QBs starting this game, well if the refs don’t screw the Bucs, they would have had this in the 2000 Super Bowl with McNair and Shaun King.

  59. The Anomaly Says:

If you use the word “woke” in a derogatory way you are definitely a raccisstt

  60. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    Your mom is woke

  61. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Looks like KC will win it.

  62. The Anomaly Says:

Exactly. Wash your hood and STFU

  63. Rod Munch Says:

Hey stupid Eagle fans… the game is a lot harder when you’re not playing trash QBs like Daniel Jones and the 49ers 4th stringer.

  64. Go Bucs Go Says:

Wow, I thought for a moment it was Bucs defense in Eagles uniforms this second half with all these blown assignment or coverage.

    Go Bucs!

  65. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Wokey woke woke wokest wokism wokiando

Apparently it doesn’t trigger Joe’s censor

  66. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    Good game though

  67. Vlad The Impaler Says:

That was a pretty sick pass by Hertz

  68. Rod Munch Says:

Leftwich would respond to that TD by running up the middle for 0.2 yards on 1st down, then calling a screen for 0.8 yards, then sending everyone on fly routes on 3rd down, so the only guy open is the RB for 0.3 yards. Then we’d punt.

Well, actually, the team with Leftwich on his own, not under control of Arians, would never put up 35 points, so it’s a moot point.

  69. Rod Munch Says:

Hey guys, we should all get together and go see the new Indiana Jones movies. It will be great, we can get some gluten free popcorn, and some veggie hotdogs, maybe hang out in a hot tub afterwards. What do you say?

  70. Rod Munch Says:

Oh, I get it now, Mahomes has been faking this ankle injury. Brillant!

  71. ElioT Says:

Pretty sad to know the Bucs are getting their teeth kicked in by both these teams with Brady.

    Without? God speed

  72. Rod Munch Says:

If this was Leftwich and Bowles coaching the Chiefs, they’d play for the FG here, because that’s what winners do.

  73. Rod Munch Says:

I bet you that John Travolta would like my veggie hotdog and hot tub idea, he’s not a hater like you guys.

  74. John Travolta Says:

“I wasn’t [like that] when I came to Hollywood. I learned to like it.”

  75. Jack Clark Says:

It’s amazing how the eagles and chiefs players were always magically where they needed to be. It’s like they had a coach telling them where they should be 🤔

  76. Go Bucs Go Says:

    That last penalty… Scripted!?!

    Go Bucs!

  77. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Chiefs win. 38-35. The team I thought would win did…but I have to say…the Eagles did much better than I thought they would.

  78. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Hurts does not have the arm for that throw, lol.

  79. Rod Munch Says:

LOL, the hail mary comes up like 20 yards short of anyone. What a loser.

  80. Rod Munch Says:

Was an entertaining game, even if the refs did keep the Eagles in the game, until then end, when they pulled the carpet out from under them. That was pretty funny.

  81. DBS Says:

    Where was Suh?

  82. Rod Munch Says:

Andy Reid mocking the Philly trash who were chanting MVP about Hurts.

  83. Rod Munch Says:

Eagles had the #1 pass defense. LOL!

Amazing what happens when you go up against guys who aren’t 4th string backups, and trash like Daniel Jones and Andy Dalton and Cooper Rush. LOL!

  84. Rod Munch Says:

On a different note, apparently the Jets inquired about getting Rodgers. You know, if the Jets got Rodgers, the Bucs should see if the Jets would take like a 4th or 5th rounder for Zack Wilson. The guy was the #2 pick in the draft for a reason, and he’s got the tools. He’s small, but has a good arm, good mobility, and maybe the NYC media is too much for him, and he’d do better in a more relaxed environment. Plus the Tampa Bay region is filled with older women that he’d like.

  85. DBS Says:

It’s amazing neither of the teams had HC’s standing on the sidelines looking like a statue. Arms folded and looking totally friggin lost.

  86. Rod Munch Says:

ESPN posted their 2023 NFL power rankings… Bucs are 2 spots behind the Panthers at #25…

So within striking distance of #32 and getting the top pick in the 2024 draft!

  87. Yucs2Bucs Says:

The NFL GOT WHAT THEY WANTED !! ANDY REID playing against his old team !! THEY COULDNT STOP THEM AMD MIRACULOUSLY did in the 2nd HALF ?? Alarming and the GHOST CALL to BOOT!!! LIKE Dwight Smith, Jerry Rice and so many others have said the NFL IS RIGGED

  88. Yucs2Bucs Says:

The NFL is RIGGED and that game was a perfect example of scripted

  89. Jack Clark Says:

    😂😂

  90. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Well….at least we have next season with Bowles to look forward to.

  91. Vlad The Impaler Says:

It seems cruel to have Trask start his career under Bowles but whatev

  92. steele Says:

I hate these teams and didn’t watch a lot of it. But some things caught my attention that were relevant.

-I hate—HATE— Hurts and the Eagles offense. But for over a half, their OL had their way, mauled KC. The value of an OL. Eagles pass rush also dominated. I thought KC was dead.

-Chiefs adjusted at the half. Gee, what miracles happen when you have real coaches that do that. Coaching, what an idea. (Bowles.)

-A lot of questionable calls continue to make me think “rig”.

-Credit to Homes for overcoming the injury.

I’m glad KC won. If Philly trash had won, we would not hear the end of it. Replace all football with wildcat formation. The animals in Philly will riot anyway, watch.

  93. David Says:

    Thoughts-
    1- Great Super Bowl
2- very well officiated until the last call robbed us of a potential great ending and robbed Philly of a real good shot at tying or winning
3- commercials officially don’t matter anymore. There’s a couple of entertaining or amusing ones a year, but other than that, they haven’t been real good for several years.
4- even if it’s not someone or a type of music I like, I can objectively watch a Super Bowl halftime show because it’s usually entertaining. This was horrendously boring. 95% of the entire performance sounded like the exact same song. Rihanna had absolutely no stage presence or emotion. We basically saw floating stages, a couple lights and listened to mostly recorded music while she lip-synched.
5- Can we please have Metallica or AC/DC next year

  94. Rod Munch Says:

To not be snarky for a moment, I agree, it was a fun game to watch, mainly because I LOVE watching Eagles fans crying.

As for the officiating… the Eagles got every break you could possibly get until the end. That was an iffy call on the PI, probably technically right, but the idiots on TV kept showing the part AFTER the hold, but still questionable. But the Eagles also got a TD where AJ Brown appeared to push off, and the Chiefs 2nd fumble recovery for a TD was taken off the board on a borderline call as the call on the field was a TD, was there overwhelming evidence to take it off the board? I’m not saying the refs got any of the calls wrong, but the Eagles fans are going to say they were screwed, when in fact they got every single break until the end of the game.

  95. Rod Munch Says:

I’ll also agree the halftime show was just dull. I didn’t find it offensive, although I did think Rianna was approaching 50 and fat, so her grabbing her rear end and her cooter didn’t really appeal to me, but it turns out she’s only 34 and pregnant.

As for the fantasy of the NFL programming the halftime show for men. Good luck with that. They already know the men are watching, so they’re trying to give women a reason to stick around, so they put in dancing and singing and commercials with cute animals.

  96. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Any word on riots in Philly yet?

  97. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Just read an article about some kid who can’t wait to riot tonight “win or lose”.
    True story. Google it

  98. CleanHouse Says:

Congrats 2x Champs RoJo and Justin Watson

  99. Wild Bill Says:

Halftime show totally sucked. Why even bother? Would make more sense to use the time to review first half action both good and bad. Lots of slo mo and deeper analysis. The game itself was entertaining and close with big plays from both teams. KC had some
very slick plays and took over in the 2nd half. Both qbs showed how over the hill Brady is by comparison. He had his day but should have stayed retired. Especially with drop in talent by coaches and players. It was a painfully long and boring season for the Bucs. And likely won’t get much better for a long time. They sucked all year. Period.

  100. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Report: Derek Carr informs Saints he won’t accept trade to any team. – PFT

Sorry if late noticing. I’ve been busy.

So Carr is determined to force his release. Smart man. Personally, I want him in Tampa. But won’t hapoen.

  101. ElioT Says:

The mass apathy for this Bucs team entering 2023 is like nothing I’ve ever seen. It’s going to be an awful season.

    Everyone knows it. Ugh…

  102. CleanHouse Says:

Can’t congratulate former Bucs on here for winning or you get moderated. Beacon of journalism!!! Wow
