About That Other Seahawks Quarterback Drew Lock

February 17th, 2023

Free agent QB Drew Lock.

This one, Joe is far, far, far less interested in.

Joe has been scouring the interwebs for intel on new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales. There’s not much.

Now Joe had read Wednesday to not be shocked if Canales somehow finds a way to bring free agent quarterback Geno Smith with him from Seattle. However, various Seattle reporters suggest that just won’t happen.

This got Joe excited (yes, Joe gets excited about playoff quarterbacks — what of it?).

However, the same Seattle scribes/radio talking heads say a guy Canales very easily could bring to Tampa Bay with him is another free agent quarterback, Drew Lock. Apparently, the two are tight. And with the Bucs not having an established quarterback, might Lock finally thrive with Canales in his third attempt to be a franchise quarterback?

Lock, a second-round pick by the Broncos in 2019, flamed out in Denver and didn’t start last season while backing up Smith in Seattle.

Besides, in Joe’s mind, how can you even remotely consider handing the keys to the offense to a guy who is such a scatterbrain that he dumped Gracie Hunt?

What a maroon!

(And yes, Joe meant “maroon!”)

Lock vs. Trask vs……Hooker? I’m here for that, but mostly if Hendon is in the picture tbh lol dude is already throwing 2 months post-op

  2. NYbucsfan Says:

    Joe,

I mean this in the nicest possible way, but I don’t want you or Bowles to have anything to do with picking a Bucs Qb. Geno Smith, really? He stinks. He had one average year in the last ten, and you want that guy to lead the Bucs.

  3. Joe in Michigan Says:

Geno Smith was “blah” before he got to Seattle, right? There’s a possibility that Drew Lock could be the next Geno Smith and improves his game.

  4. SufferingSince76 Says:

What an Eskimo Pie Head! Dude has bad judgment. Obviously.

  5. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Drew Lock had some pretty decent games and a few wins in Denver. Keep in mind that when he was at Denver, their inept coaching staff couldn’t decide who was going to be their QB so they decided on Bridgewater until he was injured/concussed a few times and then brining in. With some consistent game playing, he may not be a bad option. After being traded to Seattle as part of the Russell Wilson fiasco, he didn’t get a chance to play due to Geno’s decent year.

  6. Buc50 Says:

Imagine fawning over Drew Lock when he can’t beat out the guy you dislike. I say no thank you. Draft a QB and develop him. Trask is not good enough either.

  7. Stebobucsfan Says:

A men Joe. Rather see someone like J Brisset come to town. Lock has been in the league for a while and has failed each time given an opportunity the be a starter

  8. TDTB Says:

Dropping Gracie Hunt tells you all you need to know about his intelligence.

  9. Marine Buc Says:

#1 – Drew Lock knows the new offensive system that is being installed in Tampa and can help guide/teach Trask.

#2 – Lock would be inexpensive and we can actually afford him.

#3 – He would probably be a solid backup QB while also providing some competition with Trask.

#4 – If the Bucs end up drafting a QB in April Drew Lock will be able to help the rookie QB learn the new system.

#5 – Lock is a free agent and we wouldn’t have to trade any draft picks for him.

#6 – He has NFL experience – 21 games as a starting QB (8-13 record).

Given our current situation I think Drew Lock would be a nice addition and I believe would be a better backup than Plain Blaine Gabbert.

  10. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Lock or trask with Todd as hc means top 5 pick for new hc in 2024

  11. Hodad Says:

Maroon, Joe watch a lot of Bugs when he was a kid? Lock would help in the QB room, but this guy has had his chances, and he’s always failed. He has experience over Trask, but to me he has no upside. We already know what he is. We need to see what Trask can be. It’s not like Lock has more talent in any way.

  12. Joe Swanson Says:

I guess Lock is just about as good as any low price quarterback free agent I had rather give him minimum pay than pay sad Sam Donald or cry baby Baker Mayfield 5 or 6 mil.

  13. Joe in Michigan Says:

Agreed, Marine Buc. I watched Lock’s highlights (of course, everyone looks good in their highlights), he looks to have a decent arm and scrambling/running ability.

  14. Joe in Michigan Says:

Lock ran a 4.69 at the Combine (Trask was 5.08).

  15. NEfan Says:

Jets South!!! Here it comes. Lost his job in Denver, couldn’t beat out retread Smith and some of you are that desperate you’re conceding to this? Bucs fans amaze me everyday.

  16. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Brady is gone so you can leave too. NE=DB

  17. Razor Ramone Says:

    What an Ultra Maroon.

  18. FortMyersDave Says:

I guess Buc fans will have to wait and find out what the qb situation will be like until deep into the free agent signing period. Given the Bucs cap situation, it is doubtful they will make any splash moves unless these are roster dumps which help to get cap compliant. Joe in MI and Joe Swanson have a point in that Lock will be cheap and is familiar with the new OC, so why not consider him, especially since the Bucs do not have the coin to go for the top shelf FAs and guys like Darnold or Mayfield clearly are not the answer either and would likely want more than Lock as well.

  19. JN Says:

Let the Bucs bring in Lock. That will seal Bowles fate for sure. Sorry, at best, he holds a clip board for the next 10 years for about 6 different teams just like Gabbert. I would bet the farm Trask will do the same.

This team has no franchise QB. I call BS that Trask will be the guy. It will not be Gabbert. It will not be Lock. No way Seattle lets Geno go (and I have my doubts on Geno).

This roster is a complete mess – salary cap hell, no speed, no LT, no pass rushers, 24 FAs, no run game and most importantly – NO QB.

Like i said above, the ONLY redeeming thing about signing a guy like Lock or giving the keys to Trask it will seal Bowles fate.

  20. JN Says:

One more thing – the Bucs have had their share of BAD NFL head coaches – ra ra the clown Morris, Richard Williamson, Greg Schiano, Leeman Bennett, Ray Perkins, Lovie, Koetter… and Todd Bowles is up there as one of the worst. Dude couldn’t win with Brady. They played maybe 6 – 8 quarters of good football over 18 games. They beat one team with a winning record all season. ONLY reason they won 8 games was Brady led late comeback wins against the piss poor Rams, Saints and Cards. Team was lifeless, gutless and played with zero emotion. Arguably worst run game in modern football history. I can go on and on. And we are supposed to be excited to think Trask, Lock or some other scrub is going to be a good QB for this team under Bowles? HA!

All the Glazers are doing is delaying the inevitable firing of Bowles, pissing off the fan base and delaying the REBUILD by one year.

  21. NEfan Says:

BA’s Red Pen, I am trying to leave but like I posted before, Bucs drama is like a car accident, you know you shouldn’t look but curiosity makes you. I just gotta see how Blows finishes his tenure.

  22. Knucknbuc Says:

I would almost bet that Locke is on the bucs next year. If him and canales had anytime of good relationship and Locke wants a prime opportunity to play there’s no better spot. This joe needs to stop writing and waisting his time on qbs like carr Jimmy g geno. They arent paying these qbs 15-30 mil next year when they already are paying 35 million for Tom Brady it’s very common math.

  23. Stebobucsfan Says:

I say hell no to Lock. Oh wait a minute I am not the GM. But still I don’t thank the Bucs will go that route. As I’ve said many times Jacoby Brisset is the best of the cheap free agents this year. Just look up his stats. I would like to see Carr come here but Tampa shouldn’t mortgage the franchise for a QB that’s 32 and not Brady 🤣🤣

  24. Mike Says:

I lived in Denver during the Lock years…The guy came in as a rookie and won 4 of 5 games he started. Everyone felt we found our QB finally…So what does the HC do….he dumps the young OC that Lock worked well with and replaced him with buddy in old school Pat Shurmur…yeah that guy…It was a disaster on offense everywhere you looked and not just the QB spot.
The guy has great tools and can make every throw but tends to be aggressive and turns the ball over under the Shurmur regime. Half the fan base loved Lock and the other half blamed him for everything. Personally from what I saw, it would be a good option (and inexpensive) to pair up with Trask…You just never know if this is the situation he needs.

  25. NEfan Says:

    Mike, sounds Jamais like.

  26. GrafikDetail.com Says:

@Joe when you have your pick of beautiful women you don’t simp or be a wuss beta male and worship the ground they walk on… instead you trade them in for another one

  27. KC Buc Says:

Ughhhhh please no to Lock. I mean maybe, maybe as a backup. But otherwise what NFL executive does he have blackmail on to still be in the league? Couldn’t beat out Geno, couldn’t win the Broncos job against atrocious competition. NO THANK YOU

  28. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Bucs need to give Trask an opportunity for this reason- if Bucs fans have to watch another unsuccessful veteran QB with “hope” that a new O/C will suddenly turn them into a playoff caliber QB- like watching a bad tv show rerun because it’s on a different channel- the fans will lose interest in the team and Glazer revenues will suffer.
Trask will provide fan interest and if he fails, the Bucs can make plans accordingly.

  29. Tye Says:

Geno Smith?… Put the bong down and sleep it off… Intelligence is taking a major hit!………. Remember 1 year Matt Flynn?…

Drew Lock had bad coaches and offense in Denver…
IF Canales thinks he can win with Lock then I wouldn’t hate it…
I wouldn’t mind Trask starting but don’t just hand him the job… Earn it!

  30. Tye Says:

Geno Smith?… Day drinking started early, Huh, sleep it off… Intelligence is taking a major hit!………. Remember 1 year wonder Matt Flynn?…

Drew Lock had bad coaches and offense in Denver…
IF Canales thinks he can win with Lock then I wouldn’t hate it…
I wouldn’t mind Trask starting but don’t just hand him the job… Earn it!

  31. BootyLover Says:

Drew Lock arguably has the most punchable face in the NFL. Any takers?

  32. bucsfaninOregon Says:

If he’s cheap I am all for signing Lock and any other QB in similar circumstances. Let them fight it out with what we already have?? 2023 will be a HORRIBLE year regardless of what the Bucs do.

  33. Buc4evr Says:

Brissett all day long over Lock. Actually even Trask over Lock. Ugh

  34. Dooley Says:

    @BootyLover

    Sean Peyton, now pay up

I wonder if anyone ever said the same about Geno Smith… or Rich Gannon… or Jeff Garcia… or Jim Plunkett… or … Brad Johnson… I could go on forever.

  36. TankforCaleb Says:

I’m all for it. My goal is to finish 2-15 and get the first pick in 2024. I feel that Lock and or Trask give us the best chance to de exactly that.

  37. BootyLover Says:

    @ Dooley

    I stand corrected. Lol

  38. Stanglassman Says:

Everyone knew this was the situation we were going to be in by bringing in Brady and backloading the contracts. Now that it’s time to pay the piper fans are crying about it.
This debate was done 3 years ago and consensus was that it would be worth it if they won a Lombardi. They did. Take your medicine.

The good news is we got are team back. When they win the ‘Bucs’ will get credit not just Tom Brady.

  39. sasquatch Says:

Lock would come cheap, he probably knows a lot of the stuff Canales will put in a playbook and maybe help slow-learner Trask. I’d be good with Trask, Lock, and Hooker. We just can’t spend on QB this year. Let’s get Hooker and let him recover and rehab and move him in as the starter in ’24. We’ll just have to suffer through Lock/Trask for one year.

  40. BucsfanFred Says:

Sometimes Bugs would say “tangamaroon.”. Wasn’t that guy’s name Mel Blanc?

  41. BucsfanFred Says:

I wouldn’t mind trying Lock on a non guarronteed contract.

Don’t worry, players like Lock don’t get guaranteed money. Not much anyway.

  43. Brian Says:

Hendon Hooker! He will heal and be a beast

  44. Goatfarmer Says:

    Is Norm Snead available?

  45. Stanglassman Says:

This is the time of year people think they can get a qb like Hooker in the 3 or 4th round. When April rolls around the Bucs will be lucky to get him in the first round. He may go early 2nd. Don’t fall for anyone saying he’s gonna be there at the Bucs 3rd round pick. That’s not happening.
