Several Starters Out For Atlanta Game

January 6th, 2023

Injury and status updates.

UPDATED 2:45 p.m. – Bucs coach Todd Bowles made it clear he plans to play all starters Sunday in Atlanta. But it sure seems guys with nagging injuries will get the day off.

Several starters, some who started last week against the Stinking Panthers in a win-and-in playoff scenario, will not suit up Sunday afternoon.

Players declared out include cornerback Carlton Davis (shoulder), Carl Nassib (pectoral), Logan Ryan, (knee), Donovan Smith (foot) and Vita Vea (foot).

Additionally, Jamel Dean (toe), Mike Edwards (hamstring/hip) and Julio Jones (knee) — surprise! — are listed as questionable.

(The Bucs have a losing record when both Akiem Hicks and Vea don’t start the same game.)

Not starting or day off? Six in one hand, half-dozen in the other.

And let’s be honest: The Bucs need every guy declared out to be as healthy as he can be when they host Dallas/Philadelphia next weekend.

Maybe Todd is not totally insane.

Not that it matters, he’s nevertheless a horrible head coach.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Brady is coming off his best game of the year, I don’t know why you’d put him out there in a meaningless game with a banged up o-line. I know he wants to play, and on pretty much everything else I say do whatever Brady wants, but in this one particular case, they need to tell Tommy to take a seat, there’s nothing to gain from putting him out there. Also, as a reminder, he’s 45 — give the guy a week to rest (although being about his same age there is something to be said for not taking time off and letting your body start to stiffen up).

  3. Larry Says:

Brady to Miami- Miami head coach McDaniel to Tampa. Could work. McDaniel is a run first coach that could make a lesser QB work in Tampa like he did with Garapplo in Frisco. Brady has been great but we all know his days in Tampa are numbered. There are a few QB’s available in free agency. Maybe not Tom Brady the goat but ;good enough with the right defense-run game and signal caller. Where there is smoke there just may be some fire!!

  4. NEfan Says:

Yawn, who didn’t see this coming?

  5. Daniel Says:

I wouldn’t put Brady out there with Walton playing LT

  6. SlyPirate Says:

    Ironman Julio Jones is out?

    I hope he’s okay.

  7. Divis Says:

Xavier Rhodes just got released by the Bills, possible sign??

  8. robert Says:

at least we might have less holding calls lol

  9. #8's Ghost Says:

    sly–actual lol on that one.

  10. catcard202 Says:

I really have a low option of the ATL pass rush, but why risk it?
If anything, this should be Trask’s coming out party. The Bucs might as well get a look at what they have in him in a real game. Meaningless as it is… (pre-season against future Enterprise clerks & insurance salesmen isn’t a measuring stick to judge their 2nd round 2yr healthy scratch investment!!)

  11. Redeemer Says:

If Brady plays, that means all healthy lineman will too. If we’re to believe Bowles, he wants to win this game, no matter the risk reward. I think it’s completely stupid. If they could possibly jump from the 4 to the 3, I could understand it. In this situation, I think it’s best to rest as many guys as possible. I wish the league would expand the rosters, for this very scenario. They can only dress 46. Why not expand it to 53. That way, you could treat it like a preseason game. Just a thought.

  12. SB~LV Says:

    Bowles and Leftwhich ?
    🙏

  13. SB~LV Says:

I think I just saw Hicks limping in warmups on Sunday.
Screw individual records, sit ME & CG
    Same with Lenny and Rachad
Shady Brady will insist on padding his whatever but he shouldn’t play.
The game should be treated like the last preseason game.
Since I am on a roll, teams should be able to dress all 53 in the postseason

  14. Mike Says:

Looks like a running game after all…

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sit D Smith, Wirfs & Mason….”Hey Tom, you still wanna’ play?”

  16. Crickett Baker Says:

    Let ’em PLAY! Go BUCS!

  17. PapaBuc Says:

I’m in the camp that If that Oline is intact, Brady comes back for another season. He values relationships and the team has supported him through his downs this season.

  18. Bucsfanman Says:

    robert- LOL! Well done sir!

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Gee, I wonder if what a HC says versus what he does ever conflict with each other. Nah, that would be dastardly.

Did anyone REALLY expect Bowles to play hurting starters? YES he wants to win the game & end the season with a winning record & a 3-game win streak. NO he never intended to risk any starters aggravating existing injuries prior to the playoffs.

All 5 of those declared out (Vea, Davis, Ryan, Nassib & D Smith) didn’t practice at all this week. Total rest it looks like. The others were on Limited Participation. Got a hunch that IF they play, it won’t be very much. Atlanta on the other hand is at almost full strength.

Wondering BTW who’ll fill in for Donovan to protect Brady’s blind side. Josh Wells did for 20% of the Cards game, but then he got injured & is now on IR. Walton’s the only other Tackle listed on the roster, but Luke Goedeke did play Right Tackle in college. Wonder if they’ve given any thought to experimenting with Tristan Wirfs over at LT for this game and let Goedeke play his RT position.

  20. AmauryGuzman Says:

This team needs to be careful about resting players. When that happens the team comes out flat next week. 🤦‍♂️ Todd Bowles is gonna mess this up.

  21. AmauryGuzman Says:

Only todd bowles and this coaching staff could give dallas a playoff win which is rare if it’s Dallas lol.

  22. RSJCheapSeats Says:

Brady always plays the last game. He played all of them in NE.
And he always wanted to win them.

It’s crazy how stupid are about this.

  23. AmauryGuzman Says:

I would play the starters until midway through the 3rd quarter. Looks like Bowles could do the opposite which i am not a fan.

  24. teacherman777 Says:

    @ defense rules

    I thought the same thing.

Goedeke should take snaps in practice at RT while Wirfs takes snaps at LT.

Goedeke was a RT tackle in college.

However, he has been too slow for defensive tackles at the NFL level, he will be much slower than defensive ends at the NFL level.

  25. Bucfan1988 Says:

They gonna play a Max-Protect scheme this week and run the ball A TON!!

Goedeke will be the 6th OL right next to Walton for additional protection…

Don’t expect Brady to throw more than 15 balls this Sunday and pulled by 1/2 time….

Keyshawn Vaughn gonna get a ton of work!

  26. AmauryGuzman Says:

Bucfan1988 and they wil go home on wildcard weekend. I am huge proponent of playing players to get momentum and not rest them. That’s ridiculous.

  27. Joshua porter Says:

No podcast this week fellas? Best pods on keep them coming please

  28. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I still think it’s a mistake not to rest/sit out every starter you can. They’re prolly gonna lose anyway and get banged up in the process.

  29. Bucsfan13 Says:

Walton is playing LT. The ball will be coming out super quick. Don’t expect many deep shots this game. I also think Brady is playing with some sort of knee injury. If you notice, he’s switched his shotgun stance completely to right foot forward. He’s always been left foot forward. In 2020 when his knee was injured, he changed his shotgun stance to square or right foot forward to compensate for his knee injury. His accuracy suffered when he had the knee injury. Be on the lookout. This could be major. You know any injury by Brady won’t be reported. Brady controls whether he wants to be on the injury report or not. Bowles has little say on the matter.

  30. Randall Says:

“The Bucs have a losing record when both Akiem Hicks and Vea don’t start the same game.”

Yeah, I got a bad feeling the Bucs are gonna lose this one, guys. Crappy teams get super fired up to beat Brady and, as the season has proven, often do.

It will suck if Brady ends up with her first losing season ever… and the Bucs go into the postseason with a final embarrassing loss.

  31. Jack Clark Says:

“…and Julio Jones (knee) — surprise! — are listed as questionable.”

🤣😂🤣😂 Has anyone seen Julio “The Ghost” Jones????!

  32. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Julio Jones career was over when Atlanta released him……didn’t do Jack with the Titans before coming here.

I feel bad for the guy……but he’s gonna retire after this season is done……he just wants a SB ring so bad.

  33. TheBucsAnthem Says:

It gonna be a sleeper of a game…..running the ball like 80% of the game

  34. AmauryGuzman Says:

This team needs russell gage to emerge in these playoffs.

  35. My Momma Says:

My Momma says: This will be nothing more than a 3rd pre-season game: Let Brady play two or three series, then rest him. Put Gabbert in to win the game.

  36. Goatfarmer Says:

Run middle left for no gain. 2-yard flaccid screen. Sack. Punt.

    Repeat.

Maybe Dallas and Philadelphia will try so hard to win that they get injured and have to play scrubs. Like the Steelers when we played them.

    Oh, wait.

  37. Buc4evr Says:

Very concerned about Julio, what will we do without him ? Lol.

  38. DungyDance Says:

With the way most games have gone, they probably should rest Camarda this weekend. 🙂

  39. Buccos Says:

    Yes Camarda for MVP

  40. unbelievable Says:

How long do they risk Brady w/ out Donny out there?

  41. SOEbuc Says:

Need Nassib healthy. Been a big loss past few weeks.

  42. Rand Says:

I hope when the game is either a blowout or unattainable they let Trask mop it up. He needs some real time reps.

  43. kyle Says:

Sucks for Julio.. ingrown hairs on the thighs are devastating this time of year…

  44. Goatfarmer Says:

I used to date a girl with ingrown hair on her thighs. At least she let me shave her back in the tub.
