Clyde Christensen Surprised To Be Booted After Wanting To Leave

January 27th, 2023

“Clyde, I tried to get to Miami, too.”

Joe can’t speak to the veracity of this report, but it certainly is interesting.

Buccaneers quarterback coach Clyde Christensen (2019-2022) retired last week and talked to TampaBay.com following his exit.

Per the report, Christensen would have been fired by Todd Bowles but retired with pay and will relocate to North Carolina to help care for his in-laws. Ironically and allegedly, Christensen was trying to leave the Bucs a year earlier — for the Dolphins.

“Yeah, I worried about him,” Christensen said [of Tom Brady the effects of his summer divorce]. “He lost that weight. It was very stressful. And he battled and he hurt, but he put on the brave face and did it again. You’ve got a bunch of folks depending on you. I have an unbelievable respect for what Tom did this year. Off-the-charts amount of respect for him just managing things.”

Christensen has had to manage things, too. He was disappointed prior to the start of the 2022 season when the Bucs denied permission for him to accept a job with the Miami Dolphins as their offensive coordinator, an opportunity that came with a significant pay increase. He also was surprised he was part of the changes to Bowles’ staff last week. He opted to retire but will be paid the final year of his contract.

Considering the Dolphins were fined and punished by the NFL for tampering with Tom Brady, Joe gets why the Bucs would deny a coach a chance to break his or her contract and run to South Florida. But Joe is skeptical.

Did new Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel actually get permission to interview Christensen and then offer him a job before the Bucs slammed the door? Something doesn’t add up.

Also, Christensen is very close with Tom Brady, like a forever relationship. So why would the Bucs have opted to fire Christensen last week (and keep paying him) if they wanted Brady to return? Was Christensen doing that crappy of a job with Kyle Trask?

The mysteries at One Buc Palace continue.

Didn’t realize anyone at all was investing time into his development, it’s as if he’s doing his own training. When you can hardly dress a second round pick yea you’re doing a crappy job

  2. YucsBall Says:

So the Miami deal was a for sure for TB12 and the Bucs could’ve taken advantage …

Pew, I would agree with you, if Christensen had any involvement with drafting Trask. You can’t polish a turd.

  6. TheScourge Says:

Those of us that have been around awhile don’t have the fondest of memories regarding Christensen and this just adds to them. There was definitely shady business involving him going with Brady to Miami. I’m starting to appreciate Brian Flores outing the whole wretched thing. Thanks for the trophy, but I’m ready for Brady and his itchy trigger finger to move on.

  7. SB~LV Says:

    Typical dictator move of Bowles

  8. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I had thought that you could accept a job with another team, without permission, if it is a promotion, e.g. quarterback coach to offensive coordinator. However, your current team could deny the move if it is the same level. Must be some caveats that I am not aware of.

  10. ClwJB Says:

The Bowles decision making process is one of the great mysteries of the universe

Why forbid him from leaving then fire him?

Sounds like vengeance was taken on who Bowles perceived as BA’s crew….

  11. AlwaysBucs Says:

Christensen has stolen a fortune from teams by “Coaching” Brady and Manning. He would not have been the coordinator in Miami as McDaniel called the plays for them and was masterful. Clyde has shown his ineptitude as a play caller.

Dude should just take his check and go.

  16. Buc4evr Says:

I don’t think Clyde was “retired” because he was doing a crappy job with Trask. Seriously, no one can help Trask.

  17. Alanbucsfan Says:

If you accept the premise that Arians’ retirement was unexpectedly due to heart problems and that Bowles didn’t have much of an opportunity to assemble his own staff, it all makes sense.

  18. Duane Says:

Clyde’s greatest of skills was that he could brown nose with the greats. Maybe Bowles is getting rid of all the staff that were not all in last season. The problem with success for franchises is that the rising tides lift all boats, and there were people looking to advance their careers. I can see where there would be hard feelings and trust issues.

  19. Allbuccedup Says:

    This organization has no class.

  20. Bucsfan13 Says:

They got rid of Clyde because they know Brady isn’t returning. I’m telling you that Brady has already informed the Glazers and Licht that he isn’t returning. He already moved out of his house in Tampa! So where exactly would Brady live if he was coming back to Tampa. Seems like people are now feeling comfortable about talking about this season. I’m glad Brady was able to block out the noise. It sucks that you find out your wife is cheating on you with her trainer.

  21. bucsbrady Says:

  23. Bubby Says:

TB12 was always going to retire, then re-emerge with the Dolphins. He moved and pre-positioned a bunch of his TB12 trainers near Miami.

A bunch of things when bump and he found himself back on the Bucs. Yet, after all this, he was just a different guy… a shell of his former self. Divorced, tired, and less focused. It showed on the field Byron Leftwich likely paid the price.

This site called for BL to fired daily, yet salivates over the return of Brady. BA knows the real story.

  24. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

  29. Bobby M. Says:

Bowles wants “his guys”….he doesn’t want to constantly hear about Arians staff so he’s cutting the cord regardless of if we’re actually improving the staff. He’s a buffoon who got handed a job he didn’t compete for and it will continue to show next year. His body of work as a HC is mediocre, he’s a defensive minded coach in an offensive league. He’ll always get out coached by opposing teams because he manages the game to not lose vs taking chances to win.

  30. BrianBucs Says:

Clyde is a really good and respectable man. Very much honor.
I would believe Anything he says

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Off-the-charts amount of respect for him just managing things.”

This is what I got from that story. It explains why Brady had a down year.

  32. Bucsfan13 Says:

@Bubby. Leftwich’s play calling was horrible. Don’t blame Brady for Leftwich’s incompetence. How come other teams aren’t knocking down his door for offensive coordinator position jobs? The Ravens are the only one. Bowles was fed up Leftwich and let him go. That had nothing to do with Tom.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Buc4evr Says
“I don’t think Clyde was “retired” because he was doing a crappy job with Trask. Seriously, no one can help Trask.”

And how exactly do you know that?

Is it from all the playing time we haven’t seen him get? The lack of exposure to him?

  34. Bucsfan13 Says:

    Bonzai He also said this:

“It’s amazing to watch Tom Brady, in the middle of going through all those tough times, somehow keep it in the lane and get to the playoffs and win a division,” Christensen said. “People don’t see that side of it. Wins and losses are really, really important, but it’s a much bigger picture than that.”

So he basically still went about his job like a professional.

  36. HC Grover Says:

Why can’t people understand Brady is gone with the wind? He ain’t coming back. Fergit it. Just like Gronk. Gone. Face it. Deal with it. Bitterly clinging to Brady is a waste of time. What you have as of now is Bowles and Gabbert. A bleak future.

  38. JD Still Says:

Unfortunately, Tampa has done almost as good a job at developing Kyle Trask as Atlanta did at developing Brett Farve who Atlanta also drafted in the second round , never really gave Farve a chance to develop , he only threw five passes as a third string quarterback in Atlanta before they traded him to Greenbay the next year ,where Farve became a Hall of Famer after multiple mvp years and Super Bowl appearances, Tampa, please don’t be an Atlanta!

  39. Thadeus Says:

I’m a Bucs fan if The GOAT is there. If not, I’m a fan of wherever he goes. Fingers crossed it’s to Miami and he brings The Gronk and Sean Payton with him.

  40. beano Says:

JOE SAYS: “Was Christensen doing that crappy of a job with Kyle Trask?”

No, because he was doing NO job with Kyle Trask.

Christensen is the guy who said back in May – BEFORE TRAINING CAMP EVEN STARTED – that Trask would NOT be allowed to compete for the backup role as that role was reserved for Gabbert and Trask was not going to take snaps away from Gabbert.

And yet, despite that very public announcement from Christensen, there are still idiots right here on this website saying Trask couldn’t beat out Gabbert, as if there was a competition for the #2 spot. There wasn’t! But then, Trask haters never let facts get in the way of their opinions, do they?

  41. beano Says:

JD Still Says: “Tampa has done almost as good a job at developing Kyle Trask as Atlanta did at developing Brett Farve who Atlanta also drafted in the second round.”

Good point. Not only that, but Atlanta Coach Jerry Glanville was so vehemently opposed to Atlanta drafting Favre that Glanville told Favre he would never play a down in the NFL. I know one thing: there are many Jerry Glanvilles right here on this website.

Exactly what I got from that story, also, Bonzai. Sounds like Brady had a nitemare year (for his standards), and no wonder he snapped at Jim Gray, LOL.

  43. AB Says:

they fired him because Tom is not coming back…no way no how…so whatever relationship he may have with Tom doesn’t matter.

Bowles wants a clean slate on offense, including QB

  44. Joe Says:

    Trask couldn’t beat out Gabbert

He couldn’t. Anyone that watched practices will tell you that. Gabbert actually improved (slightly). Trask got worse.

But of course, someone that never watched one practice in training camp — Joe was at every practice — will reply to this comment that Joe is full of shiite. 🙄

  45. Joshua porter Says:

Don’t think he ever believed in Trask. He was calling Trask the back up the first week in camp.

  46. beano Says:

AB SAYS: “Bowles wants a clean slate on offense, including QB”

This raises an interesting point. Bowles may prefer a young inexperienced quarterback to develop over an experienced journeyman. Why? Job security. May buy him a few more years.

  47. BucsFan81 Says:

If this doesn’t say Brady is gone I don’t know what does.

  48. Defense Rules Says:

Jack Burton Mercer … ‘I had thought that you could accept a job with another team, without permission, if it is a promotion, e.g. quarterback coach to offensive coordinator.’

From what I can tell Jack, you’re 100% correct. In May 2020 the NFL owners approved a rule that said ‘assistant coaches will be allowed to take a promotion elsewhere without permission from their employer’. Unless they’ve changed it back, seems pretty cut-and-dried.

In Clyde’s case with Miami, there MAY have been more going on there than meets the eye. Was Miami doing it to entice Brady to QB for them, ie, sweetening the pot by saying they’d let Clyde come along too? Since that whole thing was pretty shady, could be that the Bucs were staying far away from the whole thing so as not to get entrapped. Or maybe it really wasn’t the OC job they were offering Clyde, but instead a parallel job like QB coach? Doesn’t McDaniel call the plays? Something about that whole thing doesn’t pass the smell test.

  49. Simeon97 Says:

Whatever happens going forward with this staff and qb, I anticipate this team making the wrong decisions.

  50. Frank Pillow Says:

The fact this organization re-employed Clyde after his miserably embarrassing stint as Tony’s OC is a miracle unto itself. Let’s not forget the pivotal role he played in the demise of Dungy’s time here.

  51. Bucsfan13 Says:

I think Bowles is absolutely fine with Gabbert leading this offense. Bowles spoke highly of him at the press conference. He called him one of his favorite players. The team also loves Blaine. The players really like him, and feels he’s a good leader. Mark my words, Gabbert will be our starting QB next year.

  52. beano Says:

Joe Says: “Trask couldn’t beat out Gabbert.”

The only problem with your statement is that its premise is false; hence so is your statement.

There was never a competition between Gabbert and Trask on a level playing field, so neither guy “beat out” the other guy. Gabbert never played with the crap players Trask played with, either in preseason or in the last regular season game; and, Trask never played with the first and second team players Gabbert played with. All just as Bucs QB Coach Clyde Christensen – before training camp – said would be the case. So, your statement’s premise – that there was a fair competition and Gabbert won – is total BS.

More, all season long, whenever Brady was off, you cried that it was because of this or that on the offense, the clear premise being that what surrounds a quarterback affects his performance – which is true! However, you throw that truth out the window when it comes to Trask.

But then, you thought Johnny Manziel was the Second Coming and you wrote an article (still in your archives) lamenting that the Bucs failed to draft him – one of the biggest busts of all time. So, there’s that. 😛
The article you have quoted many times is Gary Shelton’s commentary, not Joe’s. Yes, Joe would have been pleased if the Bucs drafted Manziel or three other QBs in that draft. –Joe

  53. beano Says:

Joe Says: “Anyone that watched practices will tell you that … Trask got worse.”

ESPN Preseason Bucs v Colts QB Ratings

    Kyle Trask 99.6
    Blaine Gabbert 89.0
    Tom Brady 87.5

“JoeBucsFan … Where Arithmetic is our Specialty!” lol

  54. Joe Says:

The only problem with your statement is that its premise is false; hence so is your statement.

Actually your premise is false. You are using an assumption, a guess, a hope, as fact. If Trask was up to it, he would have been Brady’s backup.

At one point Trask seemed like he earned some snaps with the second team. So he was out on the field with the second team and faced Bucs’ second- and first team defense. Trask completely fell apart.

Of course you would know this… had you been at practices watching all of this transpire.

  55. Will Says:

I would love to see what Trask can do. When we’ve seen him it’s been with the back ups to the back ups. I wanna see the kid with the starters. Even in the last game when he got in it seemed he was making the correct reads but again he was with the back ups.
Joe during the practices that you saw was he with the back ups and who were they going against? Just looking for some context because like you said you were at all practices and I’m here in Cali

  56. NateDwg Says:

Why is everyone assuming is was Bowles that denied his coordinator role? That could have been by the Glazers, Licht or even Arians depending on the timing.

  57. NEfan Says:

I saw him in preseason, he went 0-3 against as beanblo puts it crap, other teams crap.

  58. beano Says:

Will Says: “I would love to see what Trask can do. When we’ve seen him it’s been with the back ups to the back ups. I wanna see the kid with the starters.”

No, Will. What you say is true, but that doesn’t matter. You have to take the word of Quarterback Whisperer Joe, who put up the following article on JoeBucsFan after the Bucs failed to draft Johnny Manziel:

This was Joe quoting former St. Pete Times columnist Gary Shelton. It’s sad that you feel you must go over the top — over and over again — on this Manziel stuff. Joe wanted the Bucs to draft a quarterback in 2014. Joe also was high on Bridgewater, in addition to Johnny, and liked Derek Carr and wrote plenty about Bridgewater in that draft. (Archives are here for you) And Joe was a huge Jimmy G. guy (also in the archives) and was pleased when he made a formal visit to One Buc. Joe didn’t want Josh McCown or Mike Glennon to start and didn’t want to risk winning a tank job. As for Johnny, he went to Cleveland, which probably was the worst place for an immature player. Joe doesn’t rule out him having a different outcome if he landed in Tampa or another franchise. –Joe

“CAN YOU IMAGINE THE EXCITEMENT TODAY IF THE TEAM HAD PICKED MANZIEL? CAN YOU IMAGINE THE IMPACT? MANZIEL HAS BEEN THE FINEST PLAYMAKER IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS. YOUR EYES TELL YOU THE KID CAN PLAY.”

Manziel was one of the biggest busts of all time. And yet, the guy whose “eyes tell you the kid can play”, is now telling us his eyes tell us Trask cannot play. Draw your own conclusions.

Lastly, nobody said Trask can’t play. What has been said is that he couldn’t beat out Gabbert and it’s unlikely that he can be the starter the Bucs are seeking, and now with a new offense coming, there’s even less clarity considering Trask’s relative lack of mobility. Obviously, Trask hasn’t played enough to make a clear judgement.–Joe

  59. beano Says:

Oh, look, Brady sycophant NEfaq doesn’t know that either Brady or Gabbert started each of the 3 preseason games, so the 0-3 is on them. LMAO.

  60. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Why is it legal to block someone from gaining a promotion?

  61. mark2001 Says:

Please guys… no comparison between Trask and Favre. Trask had to work his rear off to become a starter everywhere he played. Has always had questionable mobility and arm strength. Favre had very high-level talent. His problems were between the ears. The Packers coaching staff kept him in line and the lid on during most of his career. Bottom line… you can’t teach speed/elusiveness or raw talent. For a QB, Favre had them. I don’t yet see that Trask has either.

  62. mark2001 Says:

Chris..why? Because they are mega billion-dollar tycoons, that live by special rules, that have businesses that operates by special rules, that hire millionaire athletes and staff. We, on the other hand, are mere mortals.

  63. Letsbucinggo Says:

I would not give you two cents for Trask or Gabbert. Gabbert was unemployed in 2019 no nfl team wanted him.

  64. mark2001 Says:

Don’t disrespect Bridgewater. If not for that horrific injury, who knows how good he could have really been? He looked great in Minnesota, before that injury. I know…injuries happen. But it was amazing the guy even came back and made some semblance of a career after that.

  65. mark2001 Says:

You watch this team crater next season, with his hand picked guys. WTF are they doing down there? I’m so upset by this, I may boycott the season. Unbelievably stupid to let Bowles continue to destroy what’s left. Where is Licht? Is he approving this nonsense.

JOE SAYS: “It’s sad that you must go over the top — over and over again — on this Manziel stuff.”

It may make you sad to be reminded of it, but it is extremely relevant to the issue at hand. That puts an asterisk (*) on everything you say about Trask and, frankly, any other quarterback.
Feel free to put any asterisk you want out there, but just don’t make things up or misrepresent Joe. Really don’t have the desire to monitor malicious commentary. –Joe

  71. Oneilbuc Says:

Beano. I feel you bro I know it wasn’t a real competition and Joe knew it as well. From the first day he was drafted they went on a anti Kyle Trask campaign the whole spring and summer . Another fact what did BA say in 2019? He don’t believe in his starting quarterback looking over their shoulder wich tells me that as long as Brady on this team ain’t no young quarterback will be taking first team reps or have a shot at being his back up . Brady sucked this year and if Trask would have been the backup fans would have been screaming for him to start over Brady at those games. Brady was also changing the game plan the day before the game and BL didn’t know it until the game stared and that’s been well documented. But BL became the scapegoat for Brady’s bad play on the field.
Fans would not have been screaming for Trask over Brady. Don’t be silly. How many, 3 percent? 2 percent? Joe praised the pick and really wanted Trask to start against the Falcons in the season finale. That would have made sense and been in the Bucs’ best interest.–Joe

  72. beano Says:

    Oneilbuc, spot on, lad!

From the day Trask was drafted it was reported all over that he would spend two years behind Brady and Gabbert, learning from Brady. That was the plan because Brady didn’t want an inexperienced rookie behind him. The real reason is that Brady knew that’s how he got the starting job when Drew Bledsoe got injured.

The Bucs quarterback coach himself said – before training camp even started! – that there would be no competition between Gabbert and Trask. The #2 job was Gabbert’s, end of story. Joe knows this but he wants to bring in 6’0″ Caleb Williams (hence his constant #CollapseForCaleb comments). He also loved Johnny “Vegas Strip” Manziel and Jameis “INT” Winston. Joe loves busts.

  73. Redeemer Says:

beano and Oneilbuc, are you insane? Trask has dressed for one, count it one game. If you think the plan was for Trask to sit two years and not dress, then you obviously don’t understand how the league works. If you’re good, you move up the depth chart. It’s a performance based league. These conspiracy theories about Trask have gone way too far. Have you ever considered the fact that he sucks? This is a simple deduction theorem, or an axiom argument. The best players play. It’s not that complicated. If Trask was what they thought he was, he’d be the backup. Licht and BA fell in love with a BUST. It happens. If Trask is anything more than a spot starter/backup, I’d be incredibly surprised.

  74. NEfan Says:

Oneilsuckyall maybe before you comment read Joe’s post where he was at practice, Trask was given the chance to practice with the 1st & 2nd string and he failed miserably. Beanblo tends to ignore this FACT. Also Beanblo, Brady played 1 maybe 2 series at best in ONE preseason game. The remaining was shared between Gabbert & Trash, Trash playing the majority. HE LOST THEM ALL!!! Get ready for Carr, Bridgewater, Mayfield, Brissett cause Trash ain’t playing.

  75. NEfan Says:

FYI beanblo, Manzel could play and play well. Too bad he was the caucasian version of AB.

Redeemer and NEfakefan. As long as you and your washed up quarterback is gone I don’t care who the quarterback is. Brady was trash this year he’s old and washed up. Your master will be gone so just leave with him!!!

  79. David Says:

Raiders even do not want the old qb, Tom Brady there. Tom Brady wanted no part of Trask as his back up to look over his shoulder whenever he had bad games in 2022 season and 2021. Tampa’s plan was to sit Trask for two year behind Tom Brady and guess what they did. Now what is about all these downgrading Trask. He will compete for starting position as second round pick like Jalen Hurts before they throw him under the bus. He is only one game away from super bowl.

  80. Bucsfan13 Says:

@David. You are absolutely delusional. There’s a reason why people hate Trask fan boys. Brady had an MVP season in 2021. No one would be yelling for Trask. and even with Brady’s off season this year no one would be begging for Trask. Yes, the GOAT is seriously threatened by a guy who couldn’t beat out Gabbert. Trask couldn’t even complete 40% of his passes in mop up duty against the Falcons. This was his first taste of a first team defense. Kid couldn’t even hit a simple out route because of his low velocity passes.

  81. beano Says:

Bucsfan13 Says: “Trask couldn’t even complete 40% of his passes in mop up duty against the Falcons.”

Trask was given only 2 series against the Falcons, at the end of the game, without starters.

Against San Fransisco, with starters, Brady had series of:

    0-2
